The Team-Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC) is a group of educators dedicated to supporting faculty from a variety of disciplines who wish to implement team-based learning. Our recent conferences have included educators from a range of backgrounds, including medical education, other health-related disciplines, graduate and undergraduate education and from K-12 education. We have benefited from everyone’s experience and wisdom as we strive to share teaching resources and promote the dissemination, evaluation and scholarship of team-based learning.

We invite you to the 11th Annual Conference on Team-Based Learning in Higher Education. The Annual Meeting presentations take the form of plenary presentations, workshops, oral presentations, and posters. This year’s meeting will be March 2-3, 2012 in St. Petersburg, Florida, with pre-meeting workshops on March 1st.

You are invited to submit proposal abstracts on any topics relevant to team-based learning. We are asking for three different types of abstracts for three of our tracks. These include the following:

Fundamentals track – for novices to TBL to help them learn the essential skills to get a TBL program started at their own institution. An example might include a workshop on facilitation techniques, or “How to Write Good Readiness Assurance Tests”

Innovations track – for those who are experienced with TBL to provide information about experiences with particular types of courses or learners or new or innovative techniques. An example might include a poster titled “A TBL Science Course for 9th Graders” or a workshop titled “How to start a Web-Based TBL Course”.

Research/Scholarship track – for those interested in presenting methods related to educational research or research studies about TBL. An example might be a workshop entitled “Getting a research program starting in your TBL course” or it could be an oral presentation in which you present research that you have done such as “Evidence of standardized test performance gains in Pharmacy students following implementation of a TBL curriculum”.

The deadline for submission of abstracts for Oral Presentations and Workshops is September 30, 2011. Abstracts for Poster presentations will be due December 15, 2011. Abstracts are to be submitted online at http://www.tblcmeeting.org . Below are brief summaries of the different types of abstracts. Each area has a hot link to an example of an abstract appropriate for the area.

1.) Oral presentations – this would be for 10-15 minute presentations of innovative projects or research. Sample oral abstract

3.) Workshops are 90 minutes or two hours and should be interactive. Sample workshop

Please note: "Workshops" are semi-structured learning sessions designed to facilitate interaction and collective learning. Unlike the lecture format, the interaction and discussion with the participants is expected to be extremely lively, and preferably in the TBL format. They will be given to smaller audiences and must demonstrate evidence of interactivity. We are looking forward to your submissions and hope to see you in St. Petersburg in 2012!

Featured Speaker - Larry Michaelsen

Larry Michaelsen, the “founding father” of Team-based learning, will be the plenary speaker on one of the most challenging aspects of TBL –simultaneous reporting. His wisdom from over 30 years of experience in TBL and expertise in conducting numerous TBL faculty development workshops will serve as a highlight at the 10th annual TBLC conference (March 3rd-4th ).

Dr Michaelsen has helped faculty in over 80 academic disciplines on over 200 campuses in the US and in eight foreign countries to incorporate this comprehensive small-group based instructional process into their curriculum. Dr. Michaelsen has received numerous college, university, and national awards for his outstanding teaching and his pioneering work in TBL.

The 10th TBLC conference will be held on March 3 and 4th in Las Vegas. Join the fun as you learn innovative strategies for Team based learning in the classroom and online. This year we have focused on new ways to implement TBL and there will be workshops on incorporating technologies in TBL experiences and incorporating TBL in web-based courses as well as introducing new ways to incorporate TBL in social sciences and engineering classes. Our program has workshops and oral presentations will cover a variety of subjects.

Call for ABSTRACTS for Annual Conference on Team Based Learning

The 10th Annual Conference on Team Based Learning in Higher Education is being held March 3-4, 2011 at the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas. We are soliciting poster abstracts on any topic relevant to Team Based Learning but will give priority to those describing research studies.

Just a quick reminder that the deadline is quickly approaching for the submission of abstracts for the 10th annual meeting in Las Vegas Nevada March 3 and 4 2011.

The deadline for submission of abstracts for oral presentations and workshops is September 15, 2010. Oral presentations will be for 15 minutes and will be on innovative projects or research. Workshops are 90 minutes or two hours and would be very interactive. Abstracts for Poster presentations will be due December 15, 2010. In just a few short weeks we will be gathering in New Orleans for the 9th Annual TBLC Meeting. Just a quick reminder for your “to do” list:

1) If you have applied for the “Train the Trainer” pre-conference workshop please remember to submit your review materials by 2/7 to admin@tblcmeeting.org

2) The hotel room block will be released on Friday 2/5. After this date, rooms may not be available at the TBLC reduced rate.

3) Visit the website to review the current program schedule! Updates are being made frequently as details are finalized.

Hands-on TBL 101 Workshop Opportunity

During the 9th Annual Team-Based Learning Collaborative Meeting to be held March 3 – 5, 2010, attendees will also have the opportunity to participant in a hands-on TBL 101 Workshop:

TBL 101

This is the single best introduction to TBL. It is conducted in a TBL format, participants must prepare ahead, take an IRAT, and engage actively with their assigned team members. The structure, process, and essential characteristics of an effective TBL module are emphasized.

By the conclusion of this workshop, the participant will be able to:

• Explain the key components of a successful TBL module.
• Outline how they would construct a TBL module from a set of objectives.
• Describe how they might convert a course/lecture they already teach into a TBL module.
• Illustrate how to transform a small group into a productive learning-team

Register today as space will be limited for this Pre-Conference workshop.

Our recent conferences have included educators from a range of backgrounds, and we have benefited from their wisdom as we strive to share teaching resources and promote the dissemination, evaluation and scholarship of team based learning.

Upcoming Larry Michaelsen Interview!

On September 23 at 3 pm Eastern (2 pm central) the Team-Based Learning Collaborative will be hosting its next “Current Topics in TBL Webinar” with an interview of Larry Michaelsen. Larry will be answering audience questions on all aspects of team-based learning: how it got started, advice for common problems and issues, and some specific advice for things that you might be finding challenging in your own TBL classroom. Jim Sibley will be MC for the event and you can forward any questions you have for Larry directly to Jim (jim.sibley@ubc.ca)

Larry Michaelsen is is Professor of Management at Central Missouri State University and is David Ross Boyd Professor Emeritus at the University of Oklahoma, a Carnegie Scholar, a Fulbright Senior Scholar and former Editor of the Journal of Management Education. Dr. Michaelsen has also received numerous college, university and national awards for his outstanding teaching and for his pioneering work in two areas. One is the development of Team-Based Learning, a comprehensive small-group based instructional process that is now being used in over 80 academic disciplines and on over 200 campuses in the US and in eight foreign countries. The other is an Integrative Business Experience (IBE) program that links student learning in three core courses to their experience in creating and operating an actual start-up business whose profits are used to fund a hands-on community service project.

The session is open to everyone and all TBL skill levels. Come join us for an interesting hour talk about TBL with the founder of team-based learning.
