I was really surprised today to find out that it would take 3.6 Earths to provide sufficient resources if everybody lived my lifestyle, according to this Footprint Calculator.

I was surprised, because I do make an honest effort to be conservative with resources. I use things until they can no longer be used, do not frivolously buy junk that I won’t use or don’t need. I work from home, so have no commute. I walk a lot and ride a bicycle. My car, which gets average gas mileage, sits in the drive all week without moving, many weeks (however, most weeks I generally do drive c. 30 miles to the roller rink for skating). I recycle stuff, and buy recycled products. I rarely consume prepackaged foods. I turn stuff off when not in use. My apartment is small and relatively cheap to heat, and I keep the heat low in winter. I don’t even have air conditioning (although the questionnaire didn’t even ask about that).
I honestly thought I was doing a pretty good job.

Areas where I know I could improve include: consuming more local produce…maybe…The thing is, I’d likely have to drive more to acquire it, so, it’s hard to say…
I’m kind of at a loss on what else I can do, besides dumping my car (which would mean giving up rollerskating at the rink, which is not going to happen).

I really wonder…if my relatively simple lifestyle is so resource intensive, then your average American household, with air conditioning and two cars (one being a SUV) and prepackaged foods and a new iPhone for everybody every six months, etc., must really be sucking up a BUTT-TON of resources…

So…What’s YOUR ecological footprint?

I pushed new code to github for TclText, the tcl-sh text editor, this evening.

Changes are mostly minor:

I altered the README and internal about/help dialogues to reflect the new software wiki location.

I altered the install.sh to install in ~/bin/, rather than /usr/local/bin, thus no longer requiring root for installation. (also moved the icon from /usr/share to the config dir, ~/.tcltext).

I removed livejournal and insanejournal posting. (use Xpostulate for that stuff!)

Possible future changes:

one click pastebin pasting would be good

both the line number and search/replace features could use some work.

still no syntax highlighting, which would be immensely useful…

But, that’s enough hacking for tonight; I have stuff to translate…

So, I pushed new code to git hub for Xpostulate today.

I would have liked to have pushed code with support for posting to posterous, but, alas, that did NOT happen. I really tried, though. As you may know, I have already written a bash script that posts to posterous, and I thought it would be trivial to “translate” that to tcl, but it didn’t prove as trivial as I’d hoped.

hacking Xpostulate

First, posterous API requires [square brackets] in the data sent. I had difficulty working that out in my tcl proc, since tcl interprets [stuff between such brackets] as commands. Thankfully, the guys in #tcl @freenode were quite helpful (as always), and I did get that worked out. What I didn’t get worked out, for reasons still unclear to me, was authentication, which is really weird, since I’ve succeeded in authenticating and sending posts with curl.
If anybody wants to take a look, the last code I tried is pasted to my pastebin here (you may see a couple of earlier pastes with other attempts, as well). I tried with auth_method clear, which works on tumblr, and with a base64 basic auth method. I kept getting 401 Unauthorized errors, even though I a sent the very same username:password and api_token that I use with my bash script.

I any case, what I DID manage was to work out a couple of little errors in the code that were hindering statusnet updates (doh…now sure how I missed them before), and I added a button to clear the status.net update field, which is handy.

I also altered the readme, about, and help to reflect the new site location, as well.

I’m not sure when I’ll get back to wrestling with posterous, but I’ll try to get on that soon.

Also, of course, getting Xpostulate to play with Blogger is on the agenda, as is packaging Xpostulate for Debian and trying to get her in Sid.

On a whim, I tried it today, and LOVE IT!
Very handy, both at home and on my remote server.

Probably I resisted for the same reasons it took me so long to finally use the BEST EDITOR EVER (vim).

Fear, ignorance…These things hold us back, friends.
Never be afraid to try something new.
You could find something amazingly useful
(or even just plain fun, like vim or mc).

Feds Shut Down MegaUpload.com

One of the world’s largest file-sharing sites was shut down Thursday, and its founder and several company executives were charged with violating piracy laws, federal prosecutors said.

An indictment accuses Megaupload.com of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed one day after websites including Wikipedia and Craigslist shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart online piracy….

This is SO WRONG!

If you drown someone in your tub, do they arrest the water company?
If you electrocute someone, do they hold the electric company responsible?
If you stick your head in the oven, do they prosecute the gas company for your demise?
If you harass someone on the phone, do they shut down the phone company?
Or, how about if you run someone over in your Ram truck…do they go after Dodge?

NO! So why do they hold a website responsible for what users do with the service they provide?

This is, indeed, what they are doing to megaupload.com, or try to do to the Pirate Bay.
It is what #SOPA and #PIPA will do to any community media-sharing site or social network.

They will hold a service provider responsible for what the service user does.

It is no different.

It is just as ridiculous and stupid and wrong.

Okay, so now I have more progress to report…

I have uploaded all relevant photos to the gallery at tonybaldwin.me/art
I have also uploaded all the paintings.
I still have to do a lot of tagging and describing and stuff, but the images are there.
I have initiated the process of moving the domain, http://www.photodharma.com, my art and photo site since,
oh…2001? to http://tonybaldwin.me/art (and away from godaddy to mydomain.com).
I haven’t decided if I’m just going to use mydomain.com to forward the domain, or if I should change the dns name servers to linode, however.

I have built tonybaldwin.me/uu for my unitarian-universalist chalice art and stuff,
and have already changed URL forwarding for uuchaliceart.com to point there, which should resolve shortly (possibly by the time you read this).

I have mirrored the Advanced Bash Scripting Guide at tonybaldwin.me/bash

Plus, I delivered Chapters 2, 3, and 4, of the Debian Admin Handbook, translated from French to English, to the author, M. Raphael Hertzog, and begun translation of Chapter 5 – Packaging (from which I hope to learn how to package Xpostulate, with which I am posting this entry, and possibly other programs for inclusion in Debian GNU/Linux, my operating system of choice).

And, I have put all of tonybaldwin.me (including this blog) back online after being on SOPA STRIKE all day.

And I swept and mopped and cleaned house.
And I called a clever and attractive young lady and made a date for Friday evening.

Oddly, until I started writing here, I didn’t feel as though I’d been particularly productive…
Not a bad day, really, when you put it all together.
