PetSmart To Open In Late June

TAMPA PALMS - New stores are opening left and right at Market Square. Now, PetSmart has scheduled its grand opening for June 28. The 27,000-square-foot store on Commerce Palms Boulevard opens for business June 23. It will be the first PetSmart in Tampa to have Doggie Day Camp and a PetsHotel boarding facility, which are scheduled to open in August. The store will employ 70 to 100 full-time and part-time workers.

Neighborhood Becoming True Gated Community

NEW TAMPA - Four years after the first homeowner moved into Live Oak Preserve, the gated community will become truly gated Sunday. The New Tampa neighborhood's main gate is accessed from Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, across from Wharton High School. A second, unmanned gate is accessed from Imperial Oak Boulevard near Turner Elementary. "Residents had expressed concerns about the gate by the [elementary] school being open during the day," Engle Homes Vice President Rick Feather said, "so we're going to close all the gates during the day, and the front gate will be manned 24 hours a day."

TAMPA - First-grader Tatum Johnson loved to frolic with friends on the school playground. The 7-year-old enjoyed playing with classmates and came home every day with tales of her school adventures. Though Tatum can no longer run with her friends though the Mort Elementary fields, her memory has become a permanent part of the school campus.

Most Schools Fare Well In FCAT Writing

TAMPA PALMS - Most area schools had a majority of their students pass this year's FCAT writing test, with eighth-graders bringing in some of the highest scores. The state Department of Education recently released 2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test writing scores. Hillsborough County eighth-graders averaged the highest score in the state. The district earned a 4.6 combined score out of a possible 6. The state average was 4.2. In the Northeast area, the USF Charter School was the only school at which more than half of its students didn't earn a passing score on the test. But the school did see improvement this year, going from 41 percent of students passing in 2007 to 45 percent of students passing in 2008.

TEMPLE TERRACE - It was a day to relax and admire the culmination of nine months of advancing their education while giving back to a community. On Sunday, May 4, 12 students from the University of South Florida School of Architecture and Community Design got together for a literal open house, holding an informal picnic at the new open-air pavilion and amphitheater at the Temple Terrace Riverfront Preserve. The site is on the east side of the Hillsborough River, north of Temple Terrace Highway.

NEW TAMPA - Discussion about putting the kibosh on New Tampa's east-west toll road dominated Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio's transportation summit Monday, but it wasn't the only news to come out of the regional round table. And the $150 million toll road, which would connect Tampa Palms to Interstate 275, wasn't the only project to suffer from lack of funding. Officials from Hillsborough and Pasco counties, Tampa and the Florida Department of Transportation took turns giving updates on road projects in various stages of development.
