State rangers expect Georgia waters to be crowded during the July Fourth holiday. They are reminding swimmers, boaters and personal watercraft riders to use common sense and caution while enjoying the water.

"We want everybody to have a good time, but we want them to be safe, too," said Capt. Stephen Adams of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources law enforcement division in Brunswick.

State kicks off first stimulus-funded road project

The $787 billion federal stimulus has begun to boost Georgia’s roadbuilding industry.

On Tuesday state and federal transportation officials gathered in Hapeville to celebrate the first stimulus-funded road project to go under construction in metro Atlanta, a repaving expected to pump $940,841 into the Georgia economy.

The Georgia Ports Authority’s executive director predicted a slow but steady recovery in world trade on the horizon as his board signed off on a budget Monday predicting slight container volume growth for the state’s terminal operations in the next 12 months.

The GPA is projecting a 4% increase in container volume in the 2010 fiscal year. The authority is projecting to close out this fiscal year, which ends June 30, handling 2.43 million 20-foot long containers, and is expecting to handle 2.56 million containers next year.

Research venture fund raises $18M in first year

The Georgia Research Alliance's venture fund has raised more than $18 million in its first year.

The fund was started by Gov. Sonny Perdue in 2008 as a way to finance high-tech startup companies borne out of university research. It takes state dollars and leverages them with a 3 to 1 match from private investors.

Missionaries celebrate 20,000th house

Every summer, World Changers mobilizes young people across the country to repair the homes of people who can't afford to have the work done.

On Wednesday, Eleanor Williams' Liberty City brick house became the group's 20,000th project.

"It's a blessing to have these people helping out the senior citizens in our community," said Williams, a 78-year-old grandmother.

World Changers is the summer volunteering program of the North American Mission Board, the missionary arm of the Southern Baptist Convention.

This year, the program counted more than 23,000 students volunteering in 85 cities across the United States and Canada. Students pay roughly…

Friends recall man as 'an inspiration to the homeless'

Richard Kine chose to spend his latter years as a homeless man, drifting from one downtown Savannah square to another.

And, on more than one occasion, a perplexed acquaintance would audibly wonder why.

"He told me once that he loved Mother Nature and wanted to be in her presence," recalled Christa Ashmore, whose ministry works within the local homeless community. "He'd lived his life long enough paying other people, and he no longer wanted to do that."
