We are happy to announce the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner John Lowell Thorndike.

John L. Thorndike was born in October 17, 1926. He graduated from The Chestnut Hill School in 1936 and went to Phillips Academy Andover. Mr. Thorndike’s family has a long history with The Chestnut Hill School, which dates back to his great-grandfather, John Lowell, who was one of the original Trustees of the school.

Mr. Thorndike has so many fond memories of CHS that not only includes two of his siblings attending CHS, but also his granddaughters who are CHS Alumni; Allegra, Class of 2008 and Isabel, Class of 2013.

Today’s events included: an opportunity for Mr. Thorndike to spend time with the Class of 2016, where he shared a few stories of what CHS was like back in the 1930s. Mr. Thorndike was especially delighted when the soon-to-be graduates asked plenty of questions about his life and what advice he could give them as they prepare for 7th Grade. He responded by saying…“The key to being happy is to find what you really want to do and do it. Remember to always do the best you can in everything you do.”

After meeting with Class of 2016, Mr. Thorndike was treated to a luncheon in the Library with his family and with three of our past Distinguished Alumni Award Winners: Michael Sherman ’56, Christopher Awtrey ’80, and Lorna Lowe ’84. It was an honor to present Mr. Thorndike with his Distinguished Alumni Award in their presence.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his model of making the world better for others, all CHS students and faculty spent our assembly time this week involved in acts of service. All across the school our efforts were coordinated to support the residents of Rogerson House, a memory care facility in Jamaica Plain. For those who are not aware, Rosie Sweeney and Evan Haller developed a community service relationship with this organization several years ago. Rogerson House residents and their caretakers visit with our Beginners class three or four times each year and take part together in music, movement, and art activities. This relationship provides valuable opportunities for cross-generational learning and empathy building and provided a powerful focal point for a CHS Day of Service throughout the school.

At each grade level, students were given a context for what it means to deal with memory issues and what kinds of things we could do to offer a measure of joy or comfort to Rogerson House Residents. Guided by the suggestions of the Rogerson House staff about meaningful activities that would benefit their residents, CHS students engaged in the following projects during our service day:

B and Grade 4: Decorating clay pots for planting project with Rogerson House visitors

Pre-K and Grade 5: Decorating vases with colorful tissue paper for centerpieces

K and Grade 6: Making tissue paper and pipe cleaner flowers to fill the centerpieces

Grade 1: Decorating placemats with pictures and notes

Grade 2: Making sensory blankets that help calm and soothe

Grade 3: Generating notes, pictures, and Valentine cards that provide a moment of joy

For the past 20 years, The Chestnut Hill School has gathered donations and compiled gift baskets for Crossroads Woman’s Shelter in East Boston. This tradition began when a member of our community stayed there with her small children. Someone had kindly donated a rose to each mother living there. Every year, we assemble about 45 baskets and donate them to that same shelter, with a special one always sent to our community member, as founder of the project.

The Kindergarten students learned about 4 different animals that are native to the state of Massachusetts: the gray wolf, the black bear, the right whale, and the wild turkey. After looking at pictures, listening to their sounds, and learning facts about each animal, children chose one they wanted to make. Each child painted their animal on a paper plate. Once the animals were made, the children each chose a different fact about their animal and wrote it on a piece of paper that was glued to the back of their animal plate.

Grade One scientists explored brain stations during class yesterday. The weight and physical characteristics of the brain were measured and investigated using cooked spaghetti. We looked at Mr.M’s motorcycle helmet and discussed how important it is to protect our brain. Suggestions ranged from ‘always wear a helmet when you bike ride’ to ‘don’t ride in busy traffic’.
