Last weekend I bought an Epson Perfection 3590 scanner, which combines your usual flatbed construction and film scanner in the top cover, the latter good enough to have automatic motor. What I intend to do with it is to digitize a whole lot of dead media I have accumulated in my apartment and put it all online in the gallery

It will probably take a lot of time, like a year or more, because I have things like photo albums from my grandparents (dating back to the beginning of XX century), and all such stuff onward from there, not to mention my own b/w negatives and prints back from when I was still a student. In fact, slides and negatives will be easier – I will be using the most excellent Vuescan software, which I discovered and bought years ago, which has some really nifty batch scanning features (and is also the absolute best in terms of quality and configurability). I am not completely sure what the dust removal feature on that scanner really is – I suspect it’s software-only and not a real infrared channel to detect dust like in Nikon film scanners, but we will see.

115 days since last posting and who knows how many minutes since I last tinkered with it, I have upgraded my original photo gallery to a fresh version of the gallery software, so it looks nicer. Will have to put some finishing touches on it, no doubt.

Another thing I will do is I will mirror everything I have on Flickr there, because Flickr proved to be a nice toy, but very inconvenient in terms of payment from Russia (think I ranted about it before), and when paid account expires, you can’t even get your pictures out.

Quoting Esther Dyson:

Doesn’t this all come down to money in the end? you might ask. Don’t kids buy things in order to get attention? Sure. And in the same way, the new financial-industrial economy all came down to food and shelter as we made the transition from an agrarian, feudal economy. But there are new dynamics worth noting. Most users are not trying to turn attention into anything else. They are seeking it for itself.

As farfetched as it may sound to some, but people are starting to think about the 3D “web”. Apparently there was a little brainstorming event in California last weekend.

I wonder when I will have time to play with Squeak to even refresh my very basic Smalltalk skills, which are not even close to being enough for exploring OpenCroquet

P.S. Is it just me or is Metaverse actually a very Neal Stephenson term? Nobody is mentioning his name around the word though.
