Director: Joss Whedon
Writer: Joss Whedon, Zak Penn
Cast: Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johanson, Samuel L. Jackson

[Editor's Note: Beware some very minor spoilers for the movie.]

Here’s the thing, the first time I saw Marvel’s The Avengers, I declared to some skeptical friends that it was the greatest super hero movie I’ve ever seen. They, who did not see the film yet, argued for The Dark Knight, which I still maintain is not a super hero movie but a crime movie that happens to star comic book characters. Said friends saw Marvel’s The Avengers and relented, saying it was extremely good.

After a second and careful viewing, I have to say it is a nearly perfect movie: solid storyline, great pacing, awesome and not overbearing action sequences, fantastic chemistry between the many larger-than-life characters, plenty of Joss Whedon humor and a beloved character’s death. Also, everyone in this movie is gorgeous.

Seriously, this may be the best looking cast I have ever seen and if I can be superficial here for a moment: that is awesome.

A lot has been said about this movie and the female gaze, a concept that has been steadily gaining traction in feminist and gender studies. I have written about the male gaze in comics before, and since this is a concept that was founded in cinema studies, it makes sense to apply it to Marvel’s The Avengers. The male gaze, or the gaze in general, is ultimately about power and dominance. Whoever holds the gaze (typically, heterosexual men) exhibits agency and dominance over the sexualized object (women). In cinema, and as I argue, in life, women are viewed merely by their bodies and as sexual objects for their male counterparts. Think of the common advertisements, posters, magazine covers, music videos, etc. and you can see the male gaze in action.

Now, as I said earlier, this film stars a handful of some terribly good-looking people, most of which are men. Black Widow is the one female Avenger and she is incredibly sexy. She is portrayed that way for the audience from her skin-tight cat suit, to her perfect eye make-up and even to her interrogation scene in the beginning of the film in which she is referred to as a “pretty face.” Nonetheless, I found Black Widow a thoroughly enjoyable and engrossing character. She manipulated her sexuality and her femininity for her own gains. In a fabulous face-off sequence with Loki, she uses his assumptions of how a woman feels and reacts to endangered loved ones to get information. She is not just a pretty face and never does the audience feel that she is trying to compensate for her womanhood. She is a world-class assassin; that’s it.

Meanwhile, a lot of comments, often bemusedly and very often sexistly, have been made about the hotness of the male Avengers. The latest issue of People Magazine features this photo-shoot:

Also jokes abound about Captain America and Hawkeye’s tight costumes and of course, Loki’s legions of fangirls. In fact, this is one of the first action movies that I can recall that I’ve noticed this profound attention paid to the fact that women (my God, WOMEN!) want to see and enjoy it. Most of the people I have talked to and discussed Marvel’s The Avengers with have been women and they all love it and want to see it again.

So where does that leave us? Is it equality to switch the gaze around so that women possess it? What does it mean to objectify the male body rather than the female in a big budget popular film? Was that even the film’s intention or are we simply protecting onto it as a society?

Ultimately, I wish more than anything that the mere fact that women would want to see a super hero movie were not considered surprising or alarming. There have been plenty of sexist and demeaning responses to Marvel’s The Avengers and its female audience. It’s as if the kneejerk reaction to seeing women line up to see an action comic book movie and being genuinely excited for it is too much to comprehend. Therefore, they MUST be in it for the eye-candy. What else could explain it? Women don’t read or care about comic books but they sure do love muscles.

I am angered by this sentiment and the fact that so many of these responses try to backpedal by claiming to be tongue-in-cheek. No, that is not a free pass to dismiss women. In fact, by focusing so much on how female audience members are objectifying the male characters only, these women are reduced to one-dimensional sexual beings.

The gaze in general, whether male or female, is troublesome. Furthermore, it is difficult to shed because of how it is shoved down our throats in society. We see here with interviews that part of the marketing of the Marvel’s The Avengers seemed to focus on the gaze and sexual objectification, rather than the strengths of the film itself.

Of course, I am happy to see a film in which it is not only the female characters that are wearing those skin-tight, kind of nonsensical outfits. I also like talking about which Avenger I would most like to date (Coulson, in case you were wondering, though technically he isn’t an Avenger) with friends but that is only a portion of why I love Marvel’s The Avengers.

I love it simply because it’s a great film. I love it because I love comic books and this did justice to some of my favorite characters. Like the millions of others who have also seen and enjoyed Marvel’s The Avengers, I love it because it was everything I could want in a super hero movie. The attractiveness of the actors is merely an afterthought.

If there’s anything that’ll spur me to get back to my blogging, it’s fangirl feminist rage. And in today’s edition, we have an absolutely boneheaded, sexist piece of crap in the form of Moviefone’s “Girl’s Guide to the Avengers”.

Seriously, writer? Instead of writing an intelligent guide to the movies for people who aren’t already fans, you write this? Using idiotic, sexist stereotypes? Sorry. Even as a humorous piece, it fails horribly.

A quick note: Moviefone has now added a disclaimer at the top of the article in an attempt to address criticism. I still think the whole thing is a hot sexist mess.

Let’s do a quick rundown of the most egregious bullshit:

As your boyfriend probably told you, “The Avengers” is hitting theaters this Friday. And you, dutiful girlfriend, are attending. But you hate action movies and you’ve never even read a comic book. (Of course, that’s not a slight against the girls who actually do read comic books — i.e. real fans, actual people with varied interests — but for this, let’s just go with the stock view of ladies, ladies!)

That little “Oops, I didn’t mean to offend girls who like superheroes!” line really isn’t helping, since you’re still writing an article entirely based around the idea that women don’t like icky boy things, so here’s how you can please your boyfriend (which is obviously a woman’s only goal in life). Psh.

Including cocktail introductions a la “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and boyfriend impressing tidbits, below is everything you need to know about “The Avengers.”

…Seriously?

What NOT to say:
“Do you think Scarlett Johansson is pretty?”
“Oh, so it’s like the ‘New Years Eve’ of superhero movies?”
“Who could concentrate on the story with all those biceps?”
“Boys are so weird.”

Yes, because every girl going to see The Avengers is a giggling twit who’s obsessed with being pretty, watching inane rom coms, and who never got over high school. That’s insulting both to fangirls AND to girls who dig rom coms, because it’s a nasty, idiotic sterotype that downplays womens’ intelligence and their taste in films. If girls like it, it must be fluff. Bullshit.

I’m not going to touch the biceps comment because I have plans to see the movie twice thanks to said biceps (as well as Ms. Johansson’s ass-kicking AND attractiveness, so there). Criticizing that would be hypocritical of me. ;)

What to say:
“Thank GOD someone did the Hulk correctly.”
“I can’t wait for ‘Thor 2.’”
“Joss Whedon is the man.”
“Yeah, you’re definitely Iron Man. If he were buffer.”

See, these are logical suggestions (except for the last one. seriously.), and you know what, Moviefone? There will be many a woman coming out of The Avengers saying exactly these things.

But you know what else? They’ll be saying them because they used their brains and their enjoyment of superhero action movies to come to those conclusions. They’re not saying them because they want to impress a boyfriend.

You would think at some point that people who write about entertainment would clue into the fact that girls do, in fact, enjoy genres that they seem to think are boys-only. I mean, we fangirls rant about this shit all the time. Could someone pick up a clue?

Here, I’ll put it in big letters so anyone still holding onto that dumbass, outdated, sexist notion will understand it better:

WOMEN LIKE ALL KINDS OF THINGS.

There’s not a contract that we sign at birth stating that we can only like stuff with glitter and princesses and romance. Guess what? We DO like stuff with glitter and princesses and romance, and we also like stuff with badass superheroes, aliens, and ass-kicking. So stop writing about genre films as if women haven’t the faintest clue that superheroes exist, and they need a cutesy little nudge in the right direction so they can please their boyfriends. Stop perpetuating the misogynistic stereotype, okay?

Actually, you know what? After all that ranting, I think I can let Black Widow best express my disdain for that article:

Edited to Add: GirlFridayK on twitter encouraged me to add this, and I think it makes sense.

If you haven’t been reading TDF, you might not know that I’m a big fan of both superhero genre stuff AND romance genre stuff. Those two interests are not mutually exclusive, as you probably already know if you’re reading this post. So really, I found that article doubly offensive. I don’t like being talked down to. It makes me angry, and this makes me angry on many levels: as a comic book fan, as someone who likes “girly” things, and as a woman who is sick and tired of being talked down to as a woman. So, yeah.

Also, my husband wouldn’t have even noticed The Avengers coming out if it weren’t for me. So stick that in your stereotyping pipe and smoke it.

Episode 6

In the final pre-Avengers podcast series, Pamela and Amanda talk about their unexpected Bruce Banner feels and how he could make an excellent baker if he put all of his anger into cupcake making. Pamela also brings up the awesomeness of Miss Marvel and the hope that Marvel doesn’t throw in every Avengers-related character from the comics in the movie sequel(s). This episode is something of a two-fer as the fangirls also talk about Captain America at length. Amanda is glad that the writers made Cap a little less cheesy and a little more feely in this adaptation while Pamela flails over the retro-futurism aspects of the film. Consider yourselves warned for spoilers for both films. Next week, Pamela and Amanda will be meeting up in Seattle to see the movie and attempt to record their flail for your listening pleasure.
Other tangential discussions include: Tony Stark’s Daddy Issues Part 2, why colorful spandex costumes don’t work in live-action superhero movies, and Black Widow and Hawkeye’s 80s hair metal band – Hawk Widow.

Colorist: Guru-eFX, Rachelle Rosenberg, Riley Rossmo
Letterer: Cory Petit

I’ve been avoiding Daken: Dark Wolverine for very vague and ridiculous reasons:

1) I had no idea who he was
2) I don’t much like Wolverine

I know these are completely nonsensical reasons for not picking up a single issue of a unfamiliar character so finally, I took a chance on Daken: Dark Wolverine #21 (right after a quick trip to Wikipedia to see just who this guy is).

Daken (who has worse daddy issues than Loki) has set his sights on destroying his father, Wolverine, after being informed by Reed Richards that the Heat drug he’s been taking has nullified his healing factor. Daken obviously figures that he has nothing to lose now, especially after being betrayed multiple times over, so he might as well go out with a bang, literally.

The first portion of the issue follows Daken as he slithers around New York, waxing poetically on the tense and frankly imbalanced relationship between super heroes and the adoring public. Daken, like many villains, steps precariously close to breaking the fourth wall in that he expresses an almost meta-understanding of his role as a bad guy in contrast to all the good super heroes in the world. Furthermore, he’s frankly disgusted with this black-and-white narrative, especially since he so hates one of the most popular good guys, Wolverine. This is apparent in a subtly creepy scene in which Daken looks over a collection of plush super heroes at a toy store and picks up a Wolverine, only to be told by a child that he’s “one of the best good guys.” Daken’s quiet agreement is unsettling.

Meanwhile, Daken’s apathy to his upcoming death unnerves Reed Richards, who offers to analyze Wolverine’s blood to find a cure, and Johnny Storm, who considered Daken a friend. We then conclude the issue with Daken slipping his father a Heat pill in an attempt to make him lose his healing factor just in time for Daken’s bombing of New York City.

Overall, I enjoyed this issue. Granted, I have never read any Daken before this and therefore, don’t have a great deal invested into this issue. Perhaps if I were a longtime fan, my feelings would be different but right now, I’m curious to see where this is going. Sadly, the last panel featured one of the silliest ending lines I’ve read in a long time and definitely one of the weakest arguments made by a villain ever. Daken wants to blow up New York simply “because super heroes are stupid.” Oh, Daken, let what you just said sink in for a moment and you’ll realize how juvenile you sounded.

Beyond this cringe-worthy moment, Daken is an interesting character though not exactly anything new. He’s a charming sociopath that you can’t help but be intrigued with – like most popular villains. What differentiates Daken is his relationship to Wolverine and his hinted at bisexuality, which is, if Wikipedia and fandom are to be believed, more like a nudge nudge in-joke than reality.

A bisexual character in a mainstream comic book series would be awesome and if Daken is, then cool. My main concern lies in the fact that the bad guy is sexually ambiguous, building upon a tradition of scary, creepy queer characters (Norman Bates, Jame Gumb/Buffalo Bill, and Carmilla are popular examples). Indeed, Daken perfectly fits the Depraved Bisexual trope, which is not the best step forward for queer visibility.

Furthermore, Daken could very well not be bisexual at all but merely using his sexuality as a means to get information or assistance in his dastardly plans. If this is the case, then other issues are being raised, such as the fear of having an openly bisexual male character in a mainstream comic book. Of course, it would be interesting to have a male character use his sexuality in this manner, as this is a traditionally female device (Huntress, for example, used to be portrayed in this way quite often). This isn’t empowering but it definitely blurs gender roles, which I’m always for.

Anyway, Daken’s bisexuality notwithstanding, Daken: Dark Wolverine #21 was a fun read. I was lukewarm about the art, however. The characters looked sort of slapdash and squashy to me, as if the pencillers really just wanted to throw wrinkles into everything. The coloring was nicely done, however: very bright and clean, which juxtaposed Daken’s grim outlook on life.

Apparently, Daken: Dark Wolverine has been cancelled, too, which is unfortunate. Does anyone have any Daken suggestions? I would love to see how other writers have portrayed this character.

Episode 4

The podcast is back! With the new Avengers movie coming out next month, TDF Pamela and Amanda have decided to discuss the Marvel movies leading up the new film. Each week will feature a new podcast in which the ladies talk about Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America. As always, some rambling and fangirling will happen – but isn’t that why you’re listening? Consider this a spoiler warning for both Iron Man films and the Avengers trailers and any clips they have posted online.
Quantic Dream, the developers of the popular game Heavy Rain, released this demo video at the Game Developers Conference this week in San Francisco. From All Things D:

Made by the Paris-based Quantic Dream, developers of the groundbreaking Heavy Rain game, the “Kara” concept video is a look at the future of gaming, using full-body motion capture and a new computer-graphics engine. It is running in real time on Sony’s PlayStation 3 platform.

Mostly, it is just heartbreaking, as a robot comes to life and is quickly scared by the idea of how precious that can be.

If you follow me on Twitter, you might have noticed that I’m kind of terrified that my new favorite character, Hawkeye, is going to get killed off. I mean, Joss Whedon did write and direct the movie, and if even if you’re only marginally aware of Joss’s work, you probably know that he likes to <s>rip his fans’ hearts out</s> kill off characters. I’ve come up with a theory, though, about who might get Jossed in The Avengers. There aren’t any spoilers below, but there is speculation, so if you want to remain as unspoiled as possible, beware!

Okay, so I know a lot of us are afraid that Hawkeye is going to get Jossed and die in the movie. Honestly at this point, it would be more shocking if Joss were to NOT kill off a major character.

But the more I think about it, the more it doesn’t really make sense that Joss would choose Hawkeye to die.

First, Joss likes to kill off characters that are both well-loved and important to the audience and main characters. In Serenity, he killed Wash and Book, two characters who are well-liked and generally harmless guys. He killed Buffy, even though she came back. He killed Buffy’s mom, Tara, Anya, Angel, Spike, and Doyle, Fred, Wesley in Angel… hell, he killed half the cast of Angel. In terms of storytelling, this is really effective since it shocks the audience out of the complacent idea that the main characters are safe (even if it totally fucking sucks sometimes).

In the Marvel movieverse, Hawkeye may be very likable, but he’s just not that important to audiences yet. It helps to think of The Avengers as the sixth movie in a series rather than the first. We’re already familiar with every character on the team except for Hawkeye. With other writer/directors, it would make sense to kill off the new guy, but I don’t think it makes much sense with Joss at the helm. Joss has a tendency to kill off the character you least expect him to kill, or at least a character whose death will rip a main character’s (and the audience’s) heart out.

I just don’t think that one movie will have enough time for the audience to really come to love Hawkeye (fangirls like myself excepted). Don’t get me wrong; I’m still terrified that Hawkeye is going to be the one to die, but the more I think about it, the more it would make sense for someone else to die.

Specifically, Nick Fury.

Fury is technically the team leader, and even though he’s had small roles in the other Marvel movies, he’s still a well-liked character. People cheered in the theatre when he showed up in Iron Man simply because he’s Samuel L. Jackson. The dude is awesome simply by dint of being Samuel L. Jackson. Fury isn’t one of the main heroes, but he is well-liked.

AND as the team leader, he functions as sort of a mentor to the characters. And we all know what happens to mentors in stories. Plus, Fury’s death would pave the way for Captain America to become the leader of the team, which is pretty much inevitable anyway.

So partly out of fangirl logic and partly out of my soul-deep need for Hawkeye to survive, I think if anyone’s going to bite it in The Avengers, it’s going to be Fury.

But if it is Hawkeye, I am going to embarrass the hell out of myself in the middle of a movie theatre. Sobbing, people. There will be gross sobbing.

The Reaper comes for Sally. As if that’s not enough, a ghost from her past is after her, too! And Josh’s lie about the twins being the ones to kill Hegeman sets off a chain reaction that will reverberate for both the werewolves and the vampires for a long time to come.

The following contains spoilers for season 2, episode 7 of Syfy’s Being Human. You have been warned.

The episode opens with Aidan running for his life through the woods with werewolves chasing him. He meets one of the Dutch, who promptly runs off to save his own skin. Aidan takes up a defensive position with a big knife as the wolves come on him and he recognizes Nora. Flash to the next morning and Nora is back in human form with a healing gash in her shoulder. Josh sits up behind her and ask what they did the night before.

Twenty-four hours earlier: Josh is taking a shower, steps out and finds “WHORE” written in the steam on the mirror. Aidan’s reading the paper in the kitchen, only to turn around and find all the chairs stacked higgledy-piggledy on the table. Lights in the rest of the house are blinking. Both guys look to Sally, who insists it’s not her doing. She turns the blame back on Aidan, who says his people can’t come in uninvited and Josh reminds her she’s the one who’s been taking stray teenage ghosts. She says they’re her friends, except for the guy who tried to rape her and he’s dead now. “Holla!” The guys leave after telling her to find a way to make it stop.

At the hospital, one of the Dutch, Adley, the one who was to ride home with Hegeman before he disappeared, confronts Aidan in the hallway. Aidan suggests they meet at the hotel, because hospital hallways were not meant for discussing vampire business, but Adley admonishes Aidan for his lack of manners and his evasive attitude. Those outside Boston seem to think Aidan is involved with Hegeman’s disappearance. Adley insists whoever is responsible for Hegeman’s death will pay and he won’t leave Boston until he has answers.

Nora’s back and sitting deep in thought in the cafeteria when Josh finds her. He didn’t know she was back and it doesn’t sound like she’s back willingly. After 16 days of sick leave, HR starts threatening termination, she says. Josh asks if the twins set up her accommodation but Nora denies being in contact with them while she was away. She says she got his messages, she thanks him for his taking care of the investigation, but she didn’t want him judging her. He’s angry with her for not understanding the consequences and what she put him through and she says she wants to make it right.

In the locker room, Josh asks about taking an EEG machine and Aidan says there are sexier ways to go about getting fired, like stealing high-grade pharmaceuticals. Josh wants to hurry up his study of the change to help Nora. Aidan tells Josh he can’t keep punishing himself about what he did to Nora. He also asks about the murder investigation and Josh initially denies talking to Cecelia, even when Aidan says Cecelia is missing. Josh finally intimates he tipped Cecelia off about the twins and gave her Hegeman’s rifle. Aidan accuses Josh of hypocrisy and tells Josh his actions have only made things worse for the both of them.

At home, Sally is dealing with the poltergeist. It’s sticking knives in the walls, stacking the living room furniture and tearing a path up the stairs toward her. And using Danny’s voice to taunt her! She reaches out to Aidan and tells him either Danny sent a Reaper to kill her or the Reaper is channeling Danny’s voice to scare her. Aidan looks up on the Internet and finds out Danny was killed by his cellmate, so it’s actually Danny’s ghost! Aidan tries to build her confidence by telling her she’s been a ghost way longer so she knows more tricks. Plus, there’s an iron poker and an iron skillet in the house, both of which will disperse supernatural manifestations. “It’s like a taser,” he says. His pep talk works and she’s ready to go home and take Danny on. As she disappears, Aidan has a seriously worried expression on his face.

The twins find Nora walking outside the hospital. They’re happy she’s back and want to take her out for acai drinks to celebrate before they turn tonight. They also trash talk Josh, saying she can do better. After all, he hangs around with a vampire. Nora says she knows they lied to Josh and they’re trying to drive them apart. Brynn admits they lied, then tells Nora how Josh and Aidan made the murder investigation go away. Nora confronts Josh in the storage unit. The twins told her that Aidan sent Cecelia to murder the twins. When she finds out Josh knew, she is angry. Josh tries to defend “Aidan’s” actions. Nora doesn’t see her killing Will as her fault, it was all instinct. Josh says, by that rationale, vampires are just killing on instinct too. She insists that’s different but Josh asks her where the line is or if she just makes it up as she goes. He says the twins have really messed her up and she storms out, saying she’ll be changing tonight with her friends.

Aidan calls Cecelia’s cell phone and Connor answers. When Cecelia came after them, they captured her, beat her and held her captive. Connor tells Aidan they will meet in the woods tonight during the full moon or they will kill Cecelia.

Sally is back at the house to confront Danny. She has the poker in her hand and turns around to see him there in his prison jumpsuit. She promises a beatdown, but Danny whisks the poker from her hand into his. Since he died in prison, he’s learned a lot about being a ghost in a short time. He drops the poker to strangle her, his hands getting that green glow Stevie’s did right before he killed Dylan for good. She manages to throw him off and before he can attack her again, he is attacked from behind and dissipates. It’s the Reaper, who congeals from smoke monster to a man in black.

At the Halloway Hotel, Aidan meets Adley and tells him the twin wolves who murdered Hegeman are running loose in Boston and the two of them can take the two of them tonight in the woods. Adley has a plan and tells Aidan to draw them to him, then they will finish them together. Aidan rolls his eyes and takes off to the meeting place.

In that meeting place, Josh arrives and tells Nora he doesn’t want to fight, he wants to be with her. Aidan shows up right after him and the twins were, of course, expecting him. Josh admits he was the one who sent Cecelia. Nora is appalled but the twins, especially Connor, are impressed. Josh and Nora are already painfully starting their change, but the twins are so far unaffected. They take their time stripping off their clothes, removing watches and earrings, all the while explaining how this vampire hunt will work. Aidan has to find Cecelia and the rifle somewhere out in the woods. If he’s lucky, he’ll find Cecelia first. If they’re even luckier, Aidan might kill Josh or Josh might kill Aidan. Josh tells Aidan he needs to go and Aidan takes off running as the wolves finish their transformation and pursue. Aidan bolts through the trees until he reaches Adley. When he tells Adley there are four wolves, Adley turns tail and runs, saying he’d rather return to Pennsylvania a coward than dead. Aidan continues running, brandishing the knife Josh gave him when they moved in together as a “nuclear option” to take him down if necessary. He hears Cecelia calling his name and sees her strung up by her wrists. She’s in bad shape, with cuts and welts all over her body and her left eye swollen shut. As he reaches her, he finds Nora and Josh are already there. Nora jumps and Aidan uses the knife to wound her rather than kill. This distracts Josh enough so Aidan can cut Cecelia down. He wants to get her out of there, but they’re surrounded by all four wolves now. He goes to use the rifle on the twins, but she tells him the bullets are in the shed. He tries to carry her, but she knows she has no hope and she’ll only slow him down. She tells him it’s okay to leave her and run and, with hesitation, he does. He races off as the wolves tear her apart.

The Reaper is taking his time with Sally, actually explaining why he’s there. When people do bad things in their lives, there are consequences. When Sally didn’t take her Door, she “emerged as a person of interest.” The Reaper says there is an order and he comes to those who create an imbalance in that order and get rid of them. He normally disposes of people more “problematic” than Sally, but she presents a bit of a conundrum. He says she’s special. He doesn’t normally converse with his victims, but he seems to be taking an awfully long time talking to her and he’s got a daily quota to meet. Danny balanced the scales for today, but there’s always tomorrow. Sally closes her eyes, steeling herself for the inevitable, but he disappears.

She meets him later as she’s waiting at her grave. He knew she would come to him. She tells the Reaper she’s not special, she’s miserable. She’s watching everyone in her life moving on without her, even her roommates. She asks what it’s like to be reaped and where you go. He answers, “You don’t go, it just ends.” It’s almost dawn and a new day means a new quota to fill. He admits it’s been nice interacting with her but tells her someone must be taken and she must make her arrangements, then he walks away.

In the morning, we see Nora and Josh covered in dirt and gore and cuddled up together in the long grass. Nora sits up and sees her shoulder wound. She has a very stern, impassive face as Josh asks what they did. Nora remembers enough to know it wasn’t Aidan and that Josh tried to save her. Josh says that’s all he ever wanted to do. Nora tells him she feels horrible in the morning after a change and Josh answers it will get easier, but that’s not what she meant. She feels horrible because she’s no longer a wolf. And she didn’t feel any remorse at killing Will. She’s beyond angry with Josh for trying to kill his pack but she’s also slightly proud at the same time because he gave in to the wolf. She’s given over to her animal instincts because that’s her reality. Josh insists it doesn’t have to be that way. She tells him they began their relationship because he wanted to be human and that’s the difference between them. “You want to be human…and I don’t think I do.” He turns to leave her but she begs him to stay. He says he’s going back to get his clothes, leave the woods and forget this night ever happened.

The twins come back to the shed just as Josh is ready to leave. They’re still on an endorphin rush from the “game” last night and Connor is impressed that they’re still standing. Josh has really surprised him as a scrapper. Aidan arrives and Connor, still pumped, begins singing Aidan’s praises as the vampire levels the rifle and shoots Connor in the chest with a silver bullet. As he dies, he changes back into the wolf and Brynn tries to attack Aidan but Nora holds her back. Aidan assures her he has one bullet left and warns her to leave Boston as Brynn collapses to the ground wailing. Nora tries to comfort her while glowering at Aidan and Josh. Aidan throws Josh the rifle and picks up Connor’s body. He takes the corpse, wrapped in canvas and drops it at Adley’s feet in a Boston alleyway. Aidan tells him he doesn’t care what story he makes up about how he’s a hero for killing the wolf who killed Hegeman, but Adley’s business in Boston is done. Aidan slams the trunk of his car, gets back in and drives off, leaving Adley in an alley with the canvas-wrapped corpse.

Sally’s in the kitchen rehearsing her goodbyes to the guys when Aidan walks in and realizes she had to deal with Danny herself. He asks if she’s okay she asks the same of him. Josh enters and, without saying a word, walks upstairs, followed silently by Aidan. Sally realizes her big goodbye moment is lost, so she curls up on the landing where she died and quietly says “Goodbye. I’m ready.”

I was really glad for the minimal vampire story tonight. And we might actually get some future plot movement from it! Hegeman’s killer has been “found and dealt with” but if you believe that’ll be the end of it, you’re kidding yourself. But this should bring the Dutch back in, and maybe Mother, since things in Boston are spiraling out of control and Boston is obviously overrun with werewolves.

Speaking of werewolves in Boston, how many werewolves do you think Brynn will bring back with her when she goes back to Mama Wolf and Daddy Wolf and tells them their bright baby boy is a trophy in some vampire social club? And after feeling sorry for Josh for so long with his curse and wanting to be normal, I’m finding it hard to adjust to rooting for Nora’s joy at embracing her wolf. I think it may be because it seems like she doing it for the wrong reasons. The twins have got her so twisted around, I have a feeling we’re going to see a lot more distance between the lovers before they reconcile, if ever. it seems like Nora’s always been pretty straight-laced, probably why she and Josh got along so well to begin with, but now she’s ODing on the wolf and her repressed inner wild child is coming out. And I fear it will have disastrous consequences. That said, I really appreciate that Nora has diverged so much from Nina in such a short time. I’m looking forward to more explorations of the many sides of werewolfdom and, with the inevitable McLean werewolf war on the vampires, it will be interesting to see where Nora’s loyalties lie.

What kind of jerkwad is Danny for needing to haunt the ghost of the woman he killed? It takes a serious asshat to go after her to kill her twice. His appearance and powers raised an intriguing issue though – a prison’s got to have a LOT of ghosts. And it only makes sense that a place where criminals teach other criminals how to be better criminals would have a fast track for teaching ghosts as well. Then there’s the Reaper. Not only is the Reaper (is there only one?) responsible for meting out punishment for sins, but he’s also responsible for maintaining order. And Sally passing up her door for whatever reason unbalanced that order. Those seem like pretty disparate functions, if you ask me. On the one hand, good and evil, on the other, seemingly an arbitrary numbers game with quotas. Is it “one in, one out”? If they don’t reap a certain number of souls per day, with the Reaper be reaped and someone else take his place? Is permanently snuffing out a soul the only thing that can restore balance? Next week it looks like we’ll get more reaping as, in the trailer, it looks like the Reaper is ordering Sally to become a Reaper herself, with a less than enthusiastic response. I hope they flesh it out more in the following weeks because as it sits right now, it doesn’t seem like a fully concrete idea, just a character brought in to fill a nebulous plot hole. Last but not least, why is Sally, who was so horrified and distraught at Stevie “snuffing out” Dylan, now so blase about the whole thing she actually uses the world “Holla!” Either she is suffering from some severe PTSD or she’s badly out of character in that moment. Either way, seeing how much the whole Dylan episode upset her before, this scene was jarringly incongruous enough to take me out of the action and stop and question it. Never a good thing.
