Study shows Gmail service with a higher engagement rates than Yahoo, Hotmail, and AOL.

A recent study by mailchimp shows that Gmail service has higher open rate, click rate, and lower bounce rates than other known mail service providers. With millions of emails send, the open rate of gmail is about 6% higher than Yahoo. You can argue that this is partly because Gmail service is newer than the others.

I first started with a Yahoo email and then added Gmail, but still keep my Yahoo email, which started to collect emails that I don’t really like to read..

Gmail offers a lot of features. My favorite one is being able to send email using “Send mail as” feature. This feature allows me to send email appearing from multiple accounts, and is a great way to organize my emails and respond to all of them from one single account.

To read more check it out here.

I was working on a site that needed SSL setup for credit card form submission.
SSL ( Secure Socket Layer) is a protocol that allows data to be encrypted when transmitted from the browser to the server.

Setting up SSL on the server requires a certificate to be installed. I usually buy the certificate from godaddy.

On some sites, you will see only certain pages redirect the page (URL) from http to https. I personally prefer to have https on the entire website and the best way to set it is on the server’s .htaccess file for the following reasons:

1- You don’t have to deal with changing your scripts or adding extra html or php redirect.

2- If you have to test the script on your local machine or on a server that isn’t SSL enabled, you don’t need to make changes to it.

3- It more secure.

Adding the following server redirects should do it. Just save the following in .htaccess under your root directory:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}

You can learn more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Https. Wikipedia explains the process in simple “plain english”.

I received lately 2 inquiries about webpages that are loading slowly or partially loading.
When looking at them, I found them having as much as 70 photos all lined up in one page.
The problem is, loading all the photos can take forever, and scrolling down the page to see all of them all can be a painful task.

Instead of saving all your photos in one page, why don’t you try an album were it shows only one photo and viewers click the “next/previous” link to see other photos.
This looks more elegant than scrolling, will make the page load faster, and help you better organize your photos.
I like a photo script by Trent Foley which is using jquery and loaded it on my personal computer to test. It works fine: http://www.twospy.com/galleriffic/

If you want to dedicate a site for photos you can use a php based script like Coppermine or Gallery, which are both offered free within cpanel and fantastico.
Do you know about or recommend an image gallery plugin. If so let me know.

Regards

I don’t usually think when searching, that some searches are riskier that others.
Scammers are always looking for more traffic to their sites, and lately started to look for organic traffic to get to their victims.
McAfee conducted a study that focuses on this trend by analyzing over 2000 of the most popular keywords and phrases used in search engines.
They came out with an interesting report that shows how much risk is associated to each keyword or phrase you might use in the search engines.

The riskiest keywords were the most popular ones such as: word unscrambler, lyrics, myspace, free music downloads….
By looking at the riskiest keywords, they concluded that scammers keep targeting popular keywords to gain more traffic and target a larger pool of victims.

This study was used mainly with the McAfee SiteAdvisor tool. SiteAdvisor rates sites with color codes, green being safe, yellow minor risk, and red high risk. SiteAdvisor is a plugin that you can use with you explorer and firefox browser and allows you to see the risk of a site before using it. In this study Mcfee gathered the first five pages of search results for each keyword and counted the number of red and yellow rated sites on each page. Risk was assessed as a ratio of the red and yellow sites to the green sites. Both sponsored and organic links are counted in the study.

The good news is that this study shows that the web is safer than previously thought. The average risk level according to this study fell from 4% to 1.7%.

Today a customer asked me for EPP code to transfer his domain. I had to look it up as I forgot what it stands for. EPP stands for ( Extensible Provisioning Protocol ), as per wikipedia:

“EPP is a flexible protocol designed for allocating objects within registries over the Internet.”

In other words, it is a uniform way to handle domain transactions and thus making it a lot easier to transfer domain names between registrars. It is also safer making the chance of your domain being stolen or hijacked minimal.
Different registrars use different names for EPP. I keep my domains at Godaddy.com and there, they call it Authorization Code. Other names also used are: EPP code, EPP authentication code, or EPP authorization code… They all mean the same.

To access your EPP or Authorization code at Godaddy, login to you account. Go to domain management, and click on the domain in question. A domain detail page will show all the options available to your domain.

For Security reasons, Godaddy doesn’t let account holders get the EPP code online. Godaddy.com will send the code to the administrative email on the account. All what you need to do is double check that you email is up-to-date before initiating a transfer.

Also note: Your domain has to be unlocked prior to transferring it. Also there are ICANN restrictions that will not allow you to transfer your domain, if it was registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days.

Regards.

I personally favor women’s choices here, as I think usability can add a lot of value to a site and bring repeat visitors. A while ago, I mentioned easy steps that I think every site owner and specially WordPress site owner should consider. Check it out and let me know what you think.

I was surprised to read last week a news story from avast, warning about the increase of websites infected with the iframe tag or thread.

In the story they mentioned that high visibility sites like USA Today, ABC News, and Wal-Mart were affected.

This happened to one of my sites not long ago. Thanks to avast, I found about it quickly. I have outsourced a site for one of my customers, and asked the freelancer to load the site. After he was done, I went to take a look. Suddenly the popular avast alarm sound started and a panel showed a warning me about the web page.

I was surprised, specially that other pages of the same site were fine for avast.
I quickly went back to look at the site source, and sure enough…, I found the iframe tag in the page source close to the bottom of the web page.
It had code referencing another site, that could have caused damage to my laptop without even me noticing where it came from. I quickly removed it and that was it.
I guess what happened is that the freelancer had a malware or spyware on his laptop, and it inserted the iframe tag in the page while ftp’ing the files to the server. Lesson learned: Don’t let anyone update your files for you.

iframe tags are legitimate html tags that allows you see other site’s content in your own web pages. Unfortunately, they could be used to harm you in many other ways.

To minimize the risk to your laptop, make sure you always have your antivirus software running and up-to-date on your computer. To learn more, click here to read the entire story from avast.

Stay safe.
