The setup required our relatives in UK to also have a Monopoly board at their end. Although the street names were different we managed to overcome the issue by referring to the streets by color and position (e.g., second purple).
We used sticky tags to mark who purchased each street. For those of you in finance you may want to spice it up by introducing variable exchange rate;)

During the play our friends in the Netherlands also contacted us on another laptop in the house and it gave us an opportunity to introduce them to our family. To our surprise, the Monopoly game turned out great and we had a lot of fun.

The following day we decided to try out Rock Band. We setup X-Box live and invited them to our Rock Band game whilst we had a Skype session running. It was really fun to have such a family gathering.

This would in part depend on your kids personality but some downtime is really valuable. The unstructured downtime gives them time to explore  and discover new interests. More importantly it teaches them work and life balance and the importance of spending time as a  family. I am amazed on how much kids open up and discuss different topics when there is some time available.  They engage you at all levels, trying to learn new things and get your views on different topics.  These topics range usually range from bullying, cheating, to earthquake fears, bad teachers, friends, business, fund raising and more.

The free time gives them an opportunity to reflect on their day’s events and it also gives you an opportunity to be far more involved in their decision making and thought process. These decisions might be trivial to you but significant to your them. It could be as simple as what outfit I should wear that would fit in with the pop star party to how to I deal with this kid who hits me without a reason. The main thing is they come to you for advice.
