The concept is very simple. By touching the screen you create a simple tally of correct vs. incorrect responses. It then calculates a percentage for you. It also includes a single tally option. It allows you to then copy and paste the percentages to any other app on the iPhone (soon possibly copy directly to a google spreadsheet). Check out Eric's post about the beta. At this time it is in closed Beta, hopefully soon released to all. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am one of the closed beta testers.

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? Most of the games are multi-player and are easy to play! You can play against random people, or you can set up a private game for students to play against each other in a safe setting. There are many math skills to work on and also a good amount of language arts games! These games would be great on a SMARTboard or for use in a computer lab. Check it out today!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? This week a new app for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Many special needs classrooms use Time Timer's to show a visual representation of how much time is left.

Now there's an app for that! Check out her post about the Time Timer iPhone app. Unfortunately, it is $4.99, but I think it's worth it!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? There is always lamination leftover when you use the roll laminator. While sitting in a presentation on Thematic Units made EASY by Aimee Solutions, someone suggested a great use for that leftover lamination. Get some spray adhesive (from Elmer's), and your extra laminate. Then spray (preferrably in a box), slap on a picture, and you have cheap, quick one-sided lamination! Love quick easy tips like this.

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? I really enjoyed the day, got to meet quite a few people - Chris Bugay-A.T.Tipscast, Karen Jankowski-EdTech Solutions: Teaching Every Student, Brian Wojcik-AT Cubed. That was really worth the price of coming, just the chance to meet a few of the people I read on a regular basis.

Before I talk about the sessions, I wanted to share a new link for my notes (small problem with Evernote, so went with Google Docs) - ATIA09 Notes

But the real reason I went was the conference sessions! My first session was 4 AAC techniques for every classroom. This was a really great session about how simple, training of parapros & teachers can increase independence, initiation of, and amount of AAC use. The results were significant, 5 weeks of implementation produced pretty significant changes in staff implementation. The 4 principles taught to staff were Positive Communication Environment, Partner Augmented Input, Sabotage, & Chain of Cues. The best part - all the training materials are available online! You can get all the material here at the Dynavox Mayer-Johnson site. More information from the session in my notes.

The 2nd session I attended was about the CAST Bookbuilder. Another good session, about a really great web product. You can easily create books for students to read, with text reading abilities, and "coaches" to aid comprehension. It's really a great tool, with several limitations. At this time there is not alternative access ability. So students who use switch access, or Intellikeys cannot navigate a book. Basically if you cannot use a mouse, and have very fine motor control you will not be successful using this site. You can get more information here: htt://tinyurl.com/bookbuilder4u.

I also attended a session by Dave Hohulin about how to create and implement an AT Team. It was a good session on providing information to AT teams on best practices, the law, and time to work on case studies. It was extremely informative, and interesting to hear perspectives on how the law is interpreted in various states. One audience member was confused by the fact that in IL an AT Eval must be completed in 60 days (just like any other part of a re-eval). I really liked his simple checklist for implementing an AT eval: Identify, Information, Isolate, Investigate, IEP, and Implement.

Still another 1 1/2 days left of learning to do, so stay tuned for more ideas from ATIA!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? I never really checked it out until reading this post at Web2.0 Classroom.

Google Squared is a simple concept. Take all the information on the internet about a specific topic, tease out the facts, and place it into a nice, neat, little chart. It's not perfect, but it does a pretty good job with simple searches. There are several examples on the Google Squared homepage.

I actually tried one for Dinosaurs. Here are my results: Dinosaur Square. Google put in names, pictures, descriptions, class, phylum, kingdom & genus. I added height, weight, how they walked, the list goes on. This could really be a powerful research tool for any classroom. I know it's not perfect, but Google Squared pulls together a lot of information into one place!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? But it's in a nice easy to find list. I think this post applies to many types of learners and I really think we need to take into account. How does this apply to students specifically with students with significant cognitive disabilities (SCD)? I encourage you to read the original list first! Let's look at it now:

1. Spaced Practice-We know students with SCD benefit from repetition. I think it stands to reason that spacing out this repetition over multiple days/weeks/months. Just tweaking it a little so that you practice the same skill, without repeating the same activity.

2. Cognitive Overload-I think this is obvious that students with SCD can suffer from cognitive overload. What we as educators need to recognize is when our students reach it.

3. Chunking-Breaking a task into smaller parts, has been a time honored way to teach large skills. It should not be treated as an all or nothing, what I mean is...students should not be forced to master one step before moving on. Sometimes this limitation will keep them from learning the sequence. Chunk the parts, but always go over the entire sequence too!

4. Order-Wow, this one struck home. How many times have I said, be careful what you say/do/etc... you never know what they'll learn. Then you have to go back and reteach, and that always means a lot more time. Think it through before you start, have a plan, in the long run you'll benefit.

5. Episodic and semantic memory-A very interesting point. I think that many people working with students with SCD have realized the power of visuals, kinestetic movement, and other such things, it's not everywhere. What about the ESL teacher, are they using visuals to support students? It's a powerful tool, and we need to get it out there!

6. Psychological Attention-1:1 Learning is the best for many students, but not a practical reality in most special education classrooms. I think if the ratio is 1:3 that's great for most schools, 1:2 is phenomenal. I know that distractions can make teaching quite difficult, but sometimes students need to learn how to deal with those distractions.

7. Context-Again, so true for students with SCD. Get out of the classroom, take a community based trip, use those skills you've been practicing. While the internet and web2.0 has allowed us a great opportunity to "visit" many places, it is still nothing like being there! Students need to be in the thick of it!

8. Learn by doing-Also an area most special education program understand (at least ones I've been involved in). Students with SCD learn best with concrete examples, visuals and by doing something.

9. Understand 'peer' groups-I guess I'll to read this book, but this is a very difficult area to cover. Most students with SCD need more peer interactions as a whole. I think we have to walk a fine line about allowing students independence, and keeping them "safe". I really don't like the way that sounds, but we have a responsibility to educate our students about the world, and sometimes that means educating them about how their peers really are.

10. Murder the Myths-Don't really think I can argue with this one. Time to get back to basics!

This post was quite interesting for me, I'll be honest when I started I thought I would just write a quick - check this out!, but as I got writing I couldn't do that. Reflection is a skill that must be practiced to be useful. I think it really helps to look at lots of different opinions to help make reflection a great tool.

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? My presentation is ready (save for a few minor edits), my registration is paid for, and I've started planning out what sessions I want to see, but still in the back of my mind...nervous. I hope that a few of my readers will be coming to ATIA 2009 Chicago and invite all my readers to check out notes I will take from sessions - Evernote ATIA09 Notes. Also if you are a parent, you can attend ATIA for cheap - $200 (regular price is $525). Registration is here. If you'd just like to see the Exhibit Hall you can get a free pass for one of the days here.

I'm excited and can't wait to present. Today Lifehacker shared another great tool for this OnlineOCR

OnlineOCR allows you to create Word documents of common scanned images (.jpg, .gif, or .tiff). You can also upload .pdf files and convert them to Word documents. You can also create documents in .rtf, txt, and html files. The basic conversion is free, but they place limits on the size & number of pages (1 MB in size no more than 5 pages). You can create a free account and they expand the size to 20 MB, but still only 5 pages. You can purchase more pages for a small fee (30 pages for $3.00). I've not used the service yet, but it seems to be a great alternative for small OCR jobs you might want to complete.

Patrick

Photo courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: xmacex

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? Yesterday I ran across a very interesting new type of interface. Of course at this time it's only conceptual, but has very interesting implications for Assistive Technology and computer access.

10/GUI from C. Miller on Vimeo.

10/GUI (pronounced gooey) is an interesting idea on how to reinvent the computer interface. As it points out we are rather limited and have reached a point where the mouse interface is not going to change anymore. Touch is the new interface. While touchscreens have been around for quite a while, they are sometimes just as limiting as the computer mouse. I have my own personal bias about touchscreens too (many children with disabilities generalize that all computers have touch screens and get confused when they don't, again just a personal bias).

This interface seems to have broad implications for students with disabilities. It allows students to interact with a computer in a more natural way. While we all know that the computer mouse can be difficult to teach or learn for some students, they might have more opportunity for interaction with this interface. Again, I know that it's a concept, but maybe, just maybe we can get enough people talking about it to get the ball rolling!

10/Gui

Patrick

Photo courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: Eph Zero

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? It's a very simple tool that allows you to upload photos (or choose from your Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Smugmug, or Photobucket), and set it to music. You can choose from a great selection of music they have or you can upload your own tracks. The best part is that's all you have to do! They take your photos and create the slideshow for you. The free account allows you to create 3 slideshows of up to 30 seconds in length. They also have free educator accounts where you can create as many slideshows as you want, and no limit on length. You can sign up here.

Another great feature is the iPhone/iPod Touch app. It's free to download and you can watch all the videos you created. You can even create videos using your video camera on the iPhone 3Gs. It's a great little app!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? Since I'm a teacher of these students, I have a vested interest in some of the topics. She has a great post about her rules for working with assistants here. The insights she share really struck a note with me, because it is the same chord I try and strike with my assistants. She really gets it right. This and other quick easy tips make it a great blog to read!

Patrick

Photo courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: Shashchatter

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? A reader of Teaching All Students shared this link with me:

100 Mobile Tools for Teachers

It's a great list of ways to use desktop, laptops and even mobile devices to assist in teaching all students! Some of the ones I liked were We-Fi (a social way to find Wi-Fi access) and coolmath4kids.

Patrick

Photo courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: WilliamHook

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? Again, this is not a an official offering, but still in the test stages. I tried two different photos (they have to be in .jpg, .png, or .gif) and one worked and one didn't. So it's still has some work, but this is exciting news for accessibility!!!! Having a free OCR option would open so many doors for out students. You can try out the demo here:

Google Doc OCR

Hopefully if it's gets a good response, it will become a feature much quicker!!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? One of the best features is the integration of translation services. When I first read about it there were 42 languages, recently they've added up to 51 languages. It's really so easy to use, and adds a great amount of functionality to Google Docs. This feature would be really useful for classrooms where English is not the primary language language spoken at home.

They've also added a readability feature to Google Docs. If you go to tools and select word count you get a nice pop up. It includes a basic count of words, characters, etc... as well as Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, & Automated Readbility Index. While I've not used this feature, it does seem really useful. Here's an example of what the pop up looks like:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qfWMjTvwLYU/SrBBS2omcaI/AAAAAAAAAXI/zbfW-M6bSoU/s320/Picture+1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381873346866999714" />

Thanks to Robert Byrne over at Freetech4teachers for these tips!

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? I was totally unprepared for this year. I had plans, I was all set things were going well, it was a false sense of security. I've come home exhausted and had absolutely no motivation to get ready for the next day, let alone blog. I have some great ideas for posts, I even started some drafts, but my blogging time (usually after my wife goes to bed) has been interrupted by something important, sleep. Basically in the first 3 weeks of school a student of mine has had some significant changes, which has changed the entire room, and I've lost an instructional assistant for an undetermined length of time to a freak classroom accident (she tripped over the trampoline and broke her wrist). So things have been strange, between having a sub for the injured assistant, and a sub to just help out, it's been strange.

On the positive sign, things are looking up! I think that this week is the week to get back blogging! I've never intended to post everyday, but I had intended to at least put up something 3-4 times a week. So now I'll be getting back on track. I hope that you the reader continue to read, and also hope I haven't lost too many of you! Good luck to all of you starting a new year, and let's make it a good one!

Patrick

photo courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: Kyle Kesselring

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? I was impressed by the program, and felt it did a lot of things very well. There are a few parts that they could improve.

The summer theme was "Summer". We talked about going to the pool, taking walks, going camping, etc... It was a good topic for a summer session, and even included an "indoor camping" lesson to end things. I was not able to complete all the lessons (we had a short ESY session this year), but do have some thoughts on it.

Good Points:

The theme was something that all the students could relate too. It was easy to find activities that they understood.

The curriculum covers all the areas. There were lessons for reading, math, science & social science.

Differentiation! All lessons included several different levels to help teachers plan for different level students.

Available for Primary, Intermediate, Jr. High & High School levels.

Multiple materials available. Books came in 3 levels, worksheets came with pictures or without, even tracing or non tracing sheets for handwriting.

Things to work on:

The materials are all in black & white. This did not engage my students as well as other materials I've used.

The lessons were in an odd order. Now this may be a misunderstanding by me, but all the reading lessons were first, then science, etc... I expected the different subjects to be scattered throughout the entire unit. Admittedly reading was prevalent in the majority of the lessons, but other subjects were more limited.

I don't feel that there was enough core content to justify using it as a full curriculum. I can see using it for science/social science (since it has great themes), but using it as my full reading curriculum does not feel right to me.

These are just my thoughts on the free Summer Curriculum from Unique Learning Systems. Did you use the curriculum this summer? or do you use Unique Learning System during the year? I'd love to hear your thoughts

Patrick

Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: Xose Castro

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? It's an odd time for me to write a post, but seemed appropriate some how. The training is for a reading program, and I'll probably be using it with a student or two in my classroom.

This reason for the post is just like the title - frustration, confusion, & annoyance. As I do at pretty much every training, workshop, etc... I've been to for about 3 years first thing I did was pull out my computer (before we started), check email, Twitter and get ready for the training. Then the trainer said this, go ahead and turn off you computer, we won't need it until later. At this point I'm at a loss for words. I would not think it to strange to say that I think of my computer as an Assistive Technology device, and integral to my learning. Now I'm not saying I couldn't absorb the information without it, but it does aide in my learning. I have horrible handwriting, hate paper (it's always getting lost!), and keep all my notes electronically. I politely informed her of these things, she stammered and gave in. At this point I'd like to mention that I was not the only teacher who felt this way, and several others had been annoyed at this comment too.

I guess where I'm coming from is the AT angle. We would never expect a student with physical disabilities to not use a wheelchair if that's what they needed. I guess in the long run I don't "need" my computer to learn, but shouldn't that be my choice? Shouldn't I have the option of using whatever I need to learn, just like we give our students all different ways to access curriculum (BTW-we were talking about ways to differentiate instruction for this program all morning). Just my feelings, feel free to share your own in the comments.

Parick

Photo courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons: 1Happysnapper(is waiting its killing me )'s

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful? The site is sorted into different types of bloggers by topic, subject area, etc... It is the first, and possibly the biggest conference centered on Assistive Technology in the United States. In an effort to encourage more students, parents and special educators to attend they are offering a full-time Student Discount for the October 15-17 conference in Minneapolis.

I received this information via the QIAT list, full-time students will be admitted for the discounted rate of $305! This is a letter from Closing the Gap.

Closing The Gap wants to encourage more and more teachers and clinicians to embrace the concept of changing lives with assistive technology and, to further this effort, is offering a full-time STUDENT DISCOUNT toward this year’s international, annual event, October 15-17, 2009 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

We invite you to join us this year to LEARN about the latest applications of assistive technology for persons with disabilities and to EARN up to three graduate-level academic credits and up to 3.4 IACET CEUs in the process!

The student rate is $305, regular rate is $435.

At this time, we encourage you to read on to learn about this year’s exciting content, expert presenters (many of whom are presenting only at Closing The Gap this October) and numerous registration discounts and options.

As "The" original conference on Assistive Technology I strongly encourage anyone who is able to attend. You can register here: Closing the Gap.

Patrick

Do you know somebody else who would find this post interesting or useful?
