Make Images Scale for Responsive Web Design

So you have got your web layout flexing and changing layout in a fluid or responsive web layout – but the images are not quite working they are being stubborn and not scaling and moving around like the text!

The reason is because the images most probably have a fixed width which the web layout is honoring, so for example in your source code your image may have a tag like so:

[<img src="images/my-image.jpg" alt="why is my image not scaling" width="590" height="420" />]

So here the image above on a Mobile device in either portrait or landscape orientation will not scale responsively in the view-port at the correct width; for Apples iPhone its view-port is 320px portrait or 480px landscape, so images will display at their fixed size and the user on the mobile device, in the image example above they will have to scroll/swipe to see the full 590px of width – but the idea of responsive layout is to scale all the content into the viewable view port without having to scroll width wise, it’s OK to scroll (swipe) in a depth orientation so the height doesn't really matter.

So how to fix?

Instead of assigning an absolute width value via a HTML attribute in the tag of an image, assign the CSS rule max-width that targets the image as a percentage relative width value like so:

[img {max-width:100%]

What this will do is make the image display 100% of its size within its parent element available width space.

So to illustrate this, below are 2 images of the old favourite parked domain girl, one with a defined width in pixels (590px) the other in a relative width as a percentage (100%).

Start to make the browser window narrower and watch the bottom image scale and top one remain the same size. The bottom one is scaling to 100% of its parent element which will change depending on the width of the viewport in a responsive design. For a better observation check this page on an iPhone.

So all other elements without a fixed width but rather a relative width will fit to the viewport .

So best practice would be to optimise the image at the largest size required, then set a CSS selector which targets the images and includes the {max-width:100%} rule and also ensure the width attribute is not in the html.

There are some new solutions being considered which serve different size images according to the user agent requesting them however these are not currently supported, this will be a step forward when it is ready as it will cut down on delivering full size images to be scaled on mobile devices.

You may well have a site that is littered with images with fixed widths, here are a couple of solutions to fix those.

There are exceptions to the rule, but from my dealings with other bloggers, it seems to be pretty common to spend one or even two years building your blog, your brand, and your authority, before making any serious amount of money.

Some people argue that you can make money without a lot of traffic and while that is true in some circumstances, you will generally need a lot of website traffic to start earning from a blog and that takes a while. Once you’ve reached that point, here are the primary ways to monetize your blog and start earning:

Advertising – This is definitely the most old-school way of earning money with a blog. It’s also starting to become the least common way. You can sell advertising spots directly on your site or you can sign up with a company like Google AdSense, Media.net or other Ad Networks, Either way, you won’t see a whole lot of money from ads until your views are well into the thousands each day.
Affiliates – There are many affiliate networks, such as FlexOffers and CJ Affiliate that allow you to promote other people’s products and services. The more online clout you have as a business, the more money you’ll make. If you’re known for making lasting connections (as is the case with GetVoiP above), then you’ll have no issues building your online brand. With this program, you can also find smaller companies, regional or specialized brands, and more. We had run a combination of Google, Amazon, and Rakuten’s programs from our another website, our monthly income was approximately $200 from these programs. 6. Company Referral Programs

Speaking of the benefits of permanent ads, banners and links aren’t the only ways to earn a little bit of dough off your online endeavors. By having a website, you gain the power of emailing companies to ask them for things. I have no shame in letting the yoga company whose mat I’m looking into purchasing know that I have a blog and write for yoga publications – it sometimes gets me discounts.

Other times, I gain a valuable business contact in PR, advertising, or other aspects of corporate sales. Sometimes I just get a free drink. Either way, money in and of itself is worthless. Ditch the middle man and use the internet to barter what you have and can do for what you need.

7. Klout

If you have a social media account, try out Klout. The company tracks your social media usage, determines how big and what type of audience you draw based on the subject matter of your updates and posts. Using this information, you’re qualified to receive free items, tickets, etc. Check their website often to find ways of earning free stuff by doing what you’re already doing online…boring the rest of us…

8. eBay

If you have anything you want to sell, then eBay is the place you need to seriously consider doing it first. Personally, I’m not a fan of the site because of the work it takes to build up a reputation. If you’re willing to grind through that process, you’ll be rewarded with many privileges – people have gotten rich selling books about how they got rich selling everything on eBay.

9. Amazon

If you start getting too big for eBay or decide you want to try a different flavor, Amazon has a marketplace as well. I prefer using Amazon because I can depend on their shipping, have a Prime account, and trust their reviews (overall, not usually singularly, although occasionally that as well). The difference between Amazon and eBay is that eBay (though still filled with new items) is seen as a used marketplace between individual parties, whereas Amazon (which is filled with offers for new and used merchandise from the 3rd parties) is viewed as a Wal-Mart-type superstore. As a consumer, this difference leads me to use Amazon, so it only makes sense to target on my own demographic.

10. Etsy

If you’re crafty (and I mean that in more than one way, wink wink), you’ll enjoy Etsy. Handcrafted items are the bread and butter here. Plenty of people make decent side money on the site, which is basically an eBay for crafters and artists. Set up sellers account with Etsy, and you’ll be asked to set up your virtual storefront and put up at least 5 goods for sale. Once you have this down, you’ll be a budding Etsy entrepreneur. Provide great quality to your customers, and they’ll often return. Many people are willing to pay a premium for quality handmade designs. Etsy (like eBay and Amazon) takes a cut off the top for selling items through their site. PayPal takes another cut, and you have to be careful with taxes on all income, so be diligent while building your online business.

11. Craigslist

Craigslist is the modern equivalent of the classified ads that dominated the days of newspapers. These quick ads are easy to navigate and use, and they’re geographically linked. Whether you’re selling something or offering a service. Posting ads on Craigslist is technically easy, but people often have fears about posting their personal information on the site. I communicate mostly through email when doing business on Craigslist, and I’ve never run into any issues. I’ve never been ripped off, nor have I been murdered or raped for using the site. It takes common sense, so use your best judgment, but don’t assume someone is a thief just because of their preferred communication method. For an extra bonus, google “funny Craigslist ads” to see some delightful examples of guerilla and grassroots marketing.

12. Indeed

Maybe what you need is a job. It doesn’t matter which job search site you prefer using (even Craigslist) – Indeed tracks them all, and then some. You can find jobs posted on company websites, through temp agencies, and more at Indeed. If money is something you really need, Indeed is most definitely the place you want to visit to browse career opportunities.

13. Elance

Where Indeed excels at finding job postings across the web and acting as a search crawler for employment, maybe a full-fledged career is too big of a commitment at this point in your life. Elance is a site to find freelance work of all types. I’ve used it for quick writing, editing, copywriting, resume building, and other odd jobs and temp gigs. The experience has been great. Elance offers a wide array of technical, data entry, accounting, and other freelance and temp gigs. If you’re just looking for something short and sweet, log in, input and showcase your marketable skills, and begin searching through their job database, using any parameters you desire. Once you submit a bid, you’ll receive an acceptance or denial – you may get a few rejections, but don’t sweat it. Negotiate the terms of your bid, and get to work. You have money to make.

14. Mturk

If you’ve heard of crowdsourcing (and even if you haven’t), Amazon’s Mechanical Turk program is a great place to get involved. Much like at Elance, you input your info and skills. You then are able to search for different menial tasks ranging from identifying inappropriate web content to transcribing audio recordings to basic data entry work. Just like at any other job, the more work you do, and the better your quality, the more opportunities you’ll have to make money. The payouts are often small, and your payment is received in Amazon credit, but Mturk is a great place to make mindless money while vegging on the couch watching TV.

LinkedIn is a social media site for professionals. This isn’t a direct way to make money, but it’s a great way to connect to your current and potential peers, customers, clients, vendors, and more here. You’ll build a reputation and get in the loop on important developments in your chosen career path and/or industry. One day an old college buddy may hit you up for a dream job you never considered at the exact moment you are looking for a new vocation. If you’re an experienced nanny or babysitter, Care.com is the place you want to make money. Soon, you’ll have a dozen or so reviews under your belt and can hire yourself out as a Yelp! reviewer. There are ethical and moral questions to doing this, but the title of this piece is “ways to make money,” not “ethical ways to make money,” and I am a former Bank of America/Countrywide employee, so what’d you expect?

Another seemingly free site you can make money from is Wikipedia. People who say it’s easy to edit Wikipedia have clearly never tried editing Wikipedia – it’s a pain. The traffic for this blog gives me clout to present to advertisers. To create your own blog, you don’t even need a web domain. You can start a completely free blog on either WordPress or Blogger. Each of these sites has its ups and downs, but you can’t beat the price. You generally want to keep blog posts between 150-500 words until you have a few dozen under your belt. Links between your blog posts encourage people to stay on your blog once they find it, increasing traffic. Once your blog is up, promote it on social media for the greatest effect.

If you have a passion project, Kickstarter may be exactly what you need to get it off the ground. What you’re going to see though is that the best people that are going to be your champion and be great at video prospecting are the ones that can stand out doing something cool.

To reinforce Ryan’s point there Ryan, it’s great if you can entertain and be human. I remember back when I was a sales development rep (SDR), I used to be able to send a one to many emails, and I used to get great response rates. Maybe they didn’t realize that I was sending the same email to many, that I was using mail merge, but you can’t do any of that anymore. We’re in a digital age, prospects know about these things, they educate themselves on all of our different products, all of our tactics and things like that sales teams are using for prospecting. So at the end of the day, humans buy from humans, and when it comes to calls, you only have your tone and your words. Emails, you just have your words. With video, you can use your body language, and you can build that familiarity, build that trust, they can see that you’re a human reaching out to another human.

On my team, we’re doing cold prospecting. We’re doing a mix of both sending selfie-style video, as well as screen capture videos. Our message is all about the value we can offer to those prospects, and we always want to be personalized. If somebody has something specific on their LinkedIn, they just wrote an article about an interesting topic that’s top of mind for us as well. We’ll make sure they know that we’re talking to them as a human not just as a title or whatever it may be.

I resent any opinion out there that video is a trend. I saw a blog on HubSpot about this, about video being built on a biological mechanism that’s not going to go away anytime soon. Because it’s just in your DNA. I was able to sit in on Vidyards VP of Marketing, Tyler Lessard’s session at InBound this year, and he was talking all about the psychology of video, he’s obviously tuned into it. The fact is, it’s going to give you the richest way to connect with people. So, like the handwritten note, video is not going to go out of style.

Around specific tactics, it’s still important to keep in mind your messaging and the length of your video. You want to make sure you’re always honing in on it, what’s going to work for your prospects. For us, we’ve seen incredible response rate increase from using video. Before GoVideo was a platform or product for us, we were making them in QuickTime, we were finding ways to do it, and that’s really where the need came from.

The more powerful thing is being able to follow-up about it afterward, and that was, an excellent example of what made me ultimately choose to become a Vidyard customer. Manage Your Blogger / Blogspot Comments

This article will show you how to work with comment management system of Blogger, also moderate new comments.

Login to you dashboard and then choose menu: Comments. You will see three sub menus: Published, Awaiting moderation, Spam

Published Comments

In Published page, you will see all published comment. When you hover mouse on each comment, you will see three links show under comment information: Remove content, Delete, Spam

If Remove content is selected, the comment still displays on your blog under your article, but it has no content. The content of comment can not be recovered after removed.

If Deleted is selected, the comment will be removed completely and can not restore and not display anywhere on your site.

If Spam is selected, the comment will be moved to spam page and not display anywhere on your site. But you can go to Spam page to restore it back to Published page.

If you want to work with many comments as one time, check the checkbox at beginning of each comment and then click buttons on the top of list. Or you can also check the checkbox near the buttons for working with all comments at current page.

At the top right corner, you will also see the buttons to go to another page in case your blog had a lot of comments.

If you click on the title of post that shows on each comment, Blogger will take you to the place on your site that the comment is showing.

Awaiting Moderation Comments

This page will show new comments that waiting your moderation. But you must set Comment Moderation settings to Always or Sometimes.

You can hover mouse each comment to Publish, Delete, or Spam. If select Publish, the comment will be published and move to Published page. If select Delete, the comment will be deleted forever, can not restore. If select Spam, the comment will be moved to Spam page and can be restore at any time you want.

Bulk action and pagination work similar with Published page.

Spam Comments

This page will show spam comments. Some comments were marked as spam by you manually, other ones were moved to spam page automatically depend on previous spam information that manually moderated by you.

You can hover mouse each comment to Detete, or mark as Not Spam. If select Delete, the comment will be deleted forever and can not restore. If select Not Spam, the comment will be published and move to Published page, regardless what’s the place that it stayed before.

Bulk action and pagination work similar with Published page.

Create Page on Blogger Blog / Website

Static pages are different with posts, pages are not showed in blog roll (latest post list) or feeds and also have shorter URLs. And this article will show you basic steps to create a static page on Blogger / Blogspot.

Login to your blog dashboard, click Pages. In Pages window, you will see a list of published pages that allow you mouse hover those names of pages to show links for Edit/Delete/View your published pages. And in some buttons above the list, click New page button to start working with a new static page.

Access Blogger Page Manager

In window to create page, just input your page title and content, also input search description and options for your page. The description field only appear if you enabled search preferences for your site. After all, previewed and double checked your page then click Publish button to publish your page.

Working with New Page and Publish It

Congratulation! You just created your first static page on Blogger / Blogspot.

Your published pages will show in Page List widget configure, so if you want your Page List widget can show a page, you must create a static page first like above steps.

labelname1 / 2 must be get from label name of original label page. Which are escaped special characters to available for links, ex: ‘ ‘ space => %20. If you are working with JavaScript, use function encodeURIComponent to encode your Label Names

url-of-page usually the page title in lowercase and separate words by minus “-“. You can not change the url of page, so if two pages have the same title, Blogger will auto add number to the end of page url.

url-of-post usually the post title in lowercase and separate words by minus “-“. You can change this url in Permalink option (on right hand side) when you create a post.
