The simple story is that without all the stuff I got from 4WP, my Jeep would be bone stock. Now it dominates the Rubicon Trail like it’s a paved road lol =) Love it!

Silver State 300

The Silver State 300 is an unusual race. It’s referred to as a “loop” because it consists of one 300-mile lap. In reality, it’s a “chase” race. The start line is located about 100 miles outside of Las Vegas, near the small town of Alamo, Nev. The finish line is located 20 miles away. This means that all gas, spare parts, and team members are assigned chase vehicles to “hopscotch” up and down the old state highway 93, meeting up with the race car at designated pit locations. Our team is used to sending the car off into the desert and waiting for the car to return for fuel and repairs, lap after lap. Many of our team members were new to a chase format. Much to my surprise, they loved it, and they were great at it. They told me later that they felt more involved and in-the-game. That was great news, because our next race is the infamous Vegas-to-Reno run, an epic 500-mile point-to-point adventure.

The Race

We drew the 12th starting spot out of a field of 14 Jeepspeeders. Our game plan was for veteran co-driver Mark “Sparky” Linder and I to start the race, get through the mayhem that accompanies the first 50 miles, and then settle into a pace that was fast but conservative. We were gambling that most teams would run too fast and suffer mechanical and/or driver-related failures. We were right on the money. The course was fast and dusty. We arrived at our pre-planned driver change at mile 105 without incident. Everything was working perfectly. We had worked our way up to the fifth spot. It was time for Josh Reiter and rookie co-driver Dylan Cochran to take over and bring it home.

As we traveled up and down the highway to meet them with fuel, we realized that they had turned the wick up a bit. They had moved into fourth and had their sights set on third. At the next checkpoint, they had advanced into third place and were closing in on second. About an hour later, they overtook the second place car. Then it happened. While pushing the envelope (way past the sticky part), Josh had an off-course excursion that resulted in a flat tire. Normally, this is only a four- or five-minute punishment, but they parked on a rock that would prevent the new tire from going on, so they had to reinstall the flat, move the Jeep and start all over again. They had now dropped to third.

Once on the road, they turned it up again, making up time in the final 60 miles. We all proceeded to the finish line where they showed up in third place. BUT WAIT A SECOND! HOLD ON! IT’S NOT OVER YET! We started 12th and the car in front of us started third, meaning that we beat them on corrected time. We officially finished in second place! A great result for our team and all of our sponsors. This also puts us in the points lead halfway through the season.

This is my second Explorer, hence the name Take Two. Mods include 2″ Torsion lift, lift shackles. Axles are filled with 4.10 gears, and LS in the rear with a Solid Axle diff cover out back as well. Slotted rotors with Hawk ceramic pads and Rancho 5000 on all corners. As well as Hankook Dynopro AT’s. Hella 500′s. I’ve taken it from a bone stock Explorer and done quite a bit of wheeling with her. From Big Bear to my my favorite spot, Truckhaven. It’s great seeing some of the Jeep guys double take when they see me out playing in the dirt.
