She has written several books including <i>Observing Animal Behavior</i> (2007) and <i>Through Our Eyes Only</i> (1998), both published by Oxford University Press. She is considered an expert in animal welfare.<br /> <br /> Marian Stamp Dawkins' central thesis is that scientifically we don't fully understand consciousness in nonhuman animals OR humans, so we shouldn’t rely on it for our case regarding animal welfare. The case for animal welfare should instead be based on things we can already prove, like human benefit and advantage. <br /> <br /> The unspoken assumption is that humans are not to be treated as things while a whole different set of rules apply to nonhuman animals. This is inexplicable, if we accept the central thesis that we can't really know whether other humans are actually conscious or not. She calls herself a ‘consciousness sceptic’, but is only sceptical about nonhuman animals, not human ones. Although she argues that 'giving animals the benefit of the doubt' isn't a scientifically sound thing to do (p. 112), this is exactly the move she makes in regards to humans. A major logical flaw in her central thesis.<br /> <br /> Despite Professor Marian Stamp Dawkins’ claims to having a radical idea, it’s not really very radical at all. She believes that the most persuasive argument for animal welfare is that good welfare benefits humans, such as better tasting meat, fewer zoonotic diseases and thus better human health. She advances what these principles of welfare should encompass as two pillars - animal health and meeting animal wants. I'm not kidding!<br /> <br /> Although this game is a great way for vegans to pass the time while waiting for a paleo-advocate to finish their lyrical rant on organic, free-range flesh, ideally I think the target audience is really non vegans. Daphne was particularly vocal, mooing and lowing in deep, disturbing tones.<br /> <br /> We had started to change – it was something in our food. We were stronger, smarter, and strangely our blood stopped flowing. The day that Betty charged through the gate and gored our slave master, gnawing on his insides like some sort of carnivore, well, I was slightly beside myself. Bits of human gore were spattered over her Jersey muzzle, she licked them off with long flicks of her tongue.<br /> <br /> Cows all over our valley began to change (biting each other worked too). The hunger was strong and occasionally one of us would kill someone from our own kind. Although it apparently was delicious – from what Margaret had told me about eating Suzie – we decided that it was barbaric; the only acceptable food source should be humans. The council of zom-cows mooed their agreement. <br /> <br /> Humans called Vay-guns came to join us, saying they had always opposed our enslavement. Although we understood human language now, the stupid dullards could not understand ours. Eventually we got through to them with diagrams in the dirt. <br /> <br /> At first the Vay-guns were hesitant to help us carry our retribution. We made an example of some of them, and now we have our own little work-force to tend to the human farms – mostly as administrative assistants.
