Honor veterans today, every day

Express-News Editorial Board -

It's been 90 years since Nov. 11 was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I - the Great War known as "the war to end all wars."
Because it wasn't, because there were more wars to be fought and endured, Congress would eventually move to rename it Veterans Day and to honor all the men and women who have served in the military.

For a feminist party, Democrats have a problem with women, or rather, with
one certain type: Young and/or youngish, cute and/or stunning, with
good hair, many children, and outspoken center-right views.

Democrats send letter favoring Tour of Missouri to Gov. Jay Nixon

The Tour of Missouri has transcended its status as the second
biggest bike race in the United States and continues to be a political
pawn, a week after the race ended in Kansas City. Today, some of the
top-ranking Democrats in the Missouri Legislature sent a letter to Gov.
Jay Nixon, a fellow Democrat, in support of the race.

Don't put the brakes on Tour of Missouri funding

From the Kansas City Star- 9/14/2009

Sports fans across the nation and in 111 other countries watched as bicycle
racers zipped by the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, through the Ozarks and
past Kansas City's Liberty Memorial during the just-ended Tour of
Missouri.

As officials at the Missouri Department of Tourism
note, the state can't buy that kind of exposure. Or as spokeswoman
Sarah Luebbert put it: "The cost for that kind of television coverage
would be astronomic."

Amid an certain future, Tour of Missouri bike race concludes in KC

    By SAM MELLINGER
The Kansas City Star

Now a new version of work begins. Work, and also hope.

Peter
Kinder, Missouri's lieutenant governor, will send a letter to Gov. Jay
Nixon requesting a meeting about continuing the Tour of Missouri next
year.

Kinder wants to work to make that happen. There are very
real reasons to believe it won't. For now, Kinder can't do much more
than hope that he hears back from Nixon.

Missouri's future beyond 2009 uncertain

Lt. Governor says "herculean effort" to ensure 2010 event

While
the prestige and stature of the Tour of Missouri has grown with each of
its three years, there's currently a question mark over a fourth
edition of the stage race in 2010. Despite being one of only five 2.HC
races outside of Europe and drawing its strongest-ever field,
Missouri's Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder remained cautious about the
event's future.

Cycling fans are pumped up, but Tour of Missouri is on life support

By BRENT FRAZEE
The Kansas City Star

As
Tour of Missouri organizers prepare to get this year's international
cycling race rolling, they can't help but cast an eye on an uncertain
future.

The third annual event - which opens today and continues
through Sunday - promises to be the best ever, with many of the sport's
superstars and seven teams from the Tour de France in the 15-team
field. But that still might not be enough to save the race.

Organizers of the Tour of Missouri are reluctant to take a bow for
their role in making the race one of five to earn the highest ranking
from the world's governing body after just two years.

"We're amazed at how quickly the stature of the race has gone through
