If I read about a diabetic who raises £500 with a sponsored parachute jump, it’s undoubtedly a Good Thing, but it hardly makes me leap off my chair and be proud to be pancreatically-challenged.

However, my attitude is somewhat different when it comes to Team Type 1. I think this is because their determined aim is to seriously compete at a global level and they will not compromise simply because some of their pancreases don’t work. Given that cycling is surely the greatest and hardest endurance sport out there, I do actually find them hugely rousing. If they can train for and compete in a professional bike race with no ill effects then surely I can make it through the day in my office job without too much of a problem!

http://teamtype1.org

Eldridge Keeps Rider Of The Year Lead

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 144px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aRMRGcDTAbU/ShFtEI_JzVI/AAAAAAAABpo/I3K7uFVUFKQ/s200/JoeEldridge.jpg" border="0" alt="Joe Eldridge"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337166951310019922" />East Point, Ga. – Team Type 1 co-founder Joe Eldridge maintained his lead in the East Point Velodrome Rider of the Year standings following Saturday’s “Outback Bikes presents The Wheelrace,” the second of three pro race series events at the Dick Lane Velodrome.

On a hot and humid night of racing, Eldridge finished third on points in the omnium thanks to a victory in the madison, second in the 60-lap points race and five-lap scratch race and fourth in the miss-n-out and 20-lap motorpace races.

Emile Abraham (AeroCat Cycling Team) took the overall Saturday night, ahead of Bennet VanderGenugten (Kenda Pro Cycling).

For the season, Eldridge leads Steve Hill (Brooks Cycles) by 50 points in the Rider of the Year standings. Abraham is third, 64 points behind.

As one of four riders on the Team Type 1 men’s professional squad who has Type 1 diabetes, Eldridge must closely monitor his blood glucose level during competition. Saturday night, he went into the 60-lap points race with a level of 172 mg/dl and finished at 146.

In the madison race that he won (for his 24th victory on the track this season), he was 164 at the start and 240 at the finish.

“That race was very intense and high stress,” Eldridge said. “That’s what caused my blood glucose (to) spike. Fortunately, I was able to hold it all the way.”

Hanson said he remained patient throughout the 75-minute race, even as a number of breakaways threatened to spoil the field sprint. With no teammates to help chase them down, it was left to the Hanson to do much of the work.

“I made some big efforts to stay up front and go with any dangerous moves,” he said. One time I had to chase for half a lap.”

Two years ago at this race, Hanson led out a teammate for the victory while he finished third. Climbing to the top step of the podium this time was even more satisfying with Bahati in the race.

"This was a big win," he said. "Rahsaan got me at Manhattan Beach and San Luis Obispo – where I got stuck leading out the sprint. So it was kind of a relief to get in a position to be in an opportunity to win. I know I’m fast and capable of beating him.

"There is a long history of great athletes who have won this race. I feel privileged to be one of them."

Click here to watch a video recap of the race, courtesy of the Marin Independent Journal.

Sunday, Hanson and Team Type 1 teammate Chris Jones raced in the Lodi (Calif.) Here are a few of headlines surrounding the squads' stellar accomplishments:

Lancaster (Ohio) Eagle Gazette:
Brooks joins Team Type 1, takes part in Race Across America

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vUpB-zD_RD0/Sli8s6o36YI/AAAAAAAAN1E/JGsARwOTvww/s200/DSC_0194.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357239236598163842" />Matt Brooks essentially picked the lesser of two evils. When the Pickerington native decided to hang up his soccer cleats more than four years ago, he chose competitive cycling over swimming in order to stay active.

That Brooks needed to stay fit was a given. He was diagnosed as a child with Type I diabetes. He just wasn't sure how cycling would work out.

"I started thinking 'I'm not that great of a swimmer so I'll try cycling,' " Brooks said.

Click here to read the rest of the story.

Lowell (N.H.) Through the oven-blast heat of the Mojave Desert and the bone-numbing chill of Colorado's mountains.

As he pushed through the Race Across America -- one of the world's most challenging transcontinental bicycle races -- Mark Suprenant had more than a time trial to contend with. The 44-year-old father of two had to constantly monitor his blood-sugar levels.

A Type 1 diabetic, Suprenant proved last month that neither the road nor his disease could slow Team Type 1, which shattered records in the grueling annual race. The eight-member team, all diabetics, finished the course in five days, nine hours and five minutes, breaking the ultra marathon record

Click here to read the rest of the story.

Zanesville (Ohio) Times Recorder:
Local woman volunteers at race;
Helps take care of racing team promoting diabetes awareness

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 121px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vUpB-zD_RD0/Sli8jbCpVoI/AAAAAAAAN08/L3nrVtBIgh8/s200/Karen+Scheerer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357239073497503362" />Karen Scheerer is used to doing laundry, cooking and cleaning for her family.

It wasn't until she was actually on the road in an RV, traveling across the U.S., that she realized taking care of a team of eight bicyclists proved to be a little more difficult than her normal daily chores at home.

For one week in June she helped take care of the Team Type 1 Elite/RAAM team, a bicycle racing team that came together to promote diabetes awareness, as they competed in Race Across America.

As a volunteer, she did the team's laundry, cooked, cleaned, ran errands, played navigator across the U.S. and took pictures along the way.

Click here to read the rest of the story.
http://teamtype1.org

Having Fun With Team Type 1 At The Friends for Life Conference and Expo

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aRMRGcDTAbU/Slebm5WIW1I/AAAAAAAACbg/IdodtWTvDdE/s400/photo1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356921374311471954" />
Can you figure out who the "winning" cyclist is
with Phil Southerland (right) and Kyle Rose (left)?

Lake Buena Vista, Florida – Spirits are high and the mood is light for Team Type 1 at the 10th edition of the Friends for Life Conference and Expo.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 144px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_aRMRGcDTAbU/SlecL32GNQI/AAAAAAAACbo/J_1NpnwccEU/s200/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356922009563837698" />The five-day conference opened Tuesday at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., with the gathering of world-renowned clinicians, researchers, physicians, adults, children, and families with diabetes. Bowden's career highlights include this year's victory in RAAM in record time and the American Bicycle Racing National Championship in 2006.

– – –

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 143px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aRMRGcDTAbU/SlT5_PEN4HI/AAAAAAAACas/IyIiL3wIr9I/s200/TimothyHargrave.jpg" border="0" alt="Timothy Hargrave, Team Type 1"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356180721621655666" />Omaha, Neb. – An important message of inspiration and motivation will be shared with kids at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., on Friday when Team Type 1's Tim Hargrave pays a visit.

Hargrave, a native of New Zealand, is living proof that you can achieve your dreams, even when living with a chronic illness. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of six and started running to help control his blood sugar. Today, he competes in cycling events around the world as one of 16 professional cyclists on Team Type 1.

“Team Type 1 means doing what I love – riding and racing my bike – with other cyclists with diabetes who share that common bond,” Hargrave said.

He is in Omaha for the Omaha Cycling Weekend. Friday’s visit runs from 10-11 a.m., during which time Hargrave will greet patients and families in their hospital rooms.
http://teamtype1.org

Fitchburg Longsjo Classic: Powers Runner-Up Overall, McRae On Podium Again

Powers (third from left) was afforded protection by teammates
throughout Sunday's Workers’ Credit Union Downtown Criterium.
Photos by Mark Suprenant.

Fitchburg, Mass. – Team Type 1’s Alison Powers earned her fourth top-three finish at a National Racing Calendar (NRC) stage race Sunday while Jen McRae placed runner-up on a stage for the second time at the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic.

Powers finished 20 seconds behind overall winner Evelyn Stevens (Team Lip Smackers) following Sunday’s Workers’ Credit Union Downtown Criterium. McRae was second to Tina Pic (Colavita-Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light) in the 25-mile (40 km) race that was comprised of 28 laps of a hot dog-shaped course in Fitchburg, Mass.

While Powers did earn her team-leading 18th podium place of the season, the U.S. national time trial champion said she was a little bit disappointed she didn’t win the race overall.

“I definitely wanted to win, but you can’t win every race and I did take a break after the Nature Valley Grand Prix,” Powers said. “Every day of this race, I felt like my fitness was getting better and better, so I’m right on track for nationals at the end of the month.”

McRae said the strategy Sunday was to preserve – or improve – Powers’ place in the overall standings, while also aiming for the stage win.

“I wanted to use the last corner to get the gap and then try and hug the inside line all the way to the finish,” McRae said. “Unfortunately, Tina came by me right at the line. All in all, this was a good race for us and we had a break through with our criterium racing. We finally clicked. That’s key going into criterium nationals next month.”

In the men’s race, Team Type 1’s Michael Creed finished fifth overall and teammate Darren Lill was sixth as Sunday’s criterium created a shake-up in the final standings. Zach Bell (Kelly Benefit Strategies) overtook Tom Zirbel (Bissell Pro Cycling), who had been leading the four-day, four-stage race from the start.

Creed finished fifth on the final stage to wind up 20 seconds behind Bell, while Lill was 33 seconds back in the final overall standings. He and Team Type 1 teammate Michael Creed – who is in eighth place – are two of 14 riders still within a minute of race leader Tom Zirbel (Bissell Pro Cycling).

Friday’s race began under partly sunny skies in Fitchburg, Mass., and ended in a total downpour. Lill and a half dozen others split from the pack near the halfway point of the 74.5-mile (120 km) race that featured an average speed of nearly 30 mph. Team Type 1 Director Sportif Vassili Davidenko said the rider from the Republic of South Africa was in a tough spot with O’Bee among the escapees.

“Darren did a lot of work while O’Bee had the advantage of being able to sit on since his teammate is the race leader,” Davidenko said. “The good thing is that the next race is on a pretty hard circuit and you never know how good the weather is going to be.”

Saturday’s 109-mile (176 km) Wachusett Mountain Road Race features 10 laps of a challenging 11.4-mile (18.3 km) circuit.
http://teamtype1.org

Fitchburg Longsjo Classic: McRae Second As Powers Slips From Lead

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_aRMRGcDTAbU/Sk76iZI1TcI/AAAAAAAACYM/XvnYd_KDNQI/s400/TT1_Powers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5354492475760528834" />
Team Type 1's Alison Powers (left) leads France's Jeannie Longo
during Friday's Fitchburg State College Circuit Race.

Fitchburg, Mass. – Team Type 1’s Jen McRae scored a runner-up finish on the second stage of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic Friday but it wasn’t enough to help teammate Alison Powers retain the overall lead.

Powers slipped to second following Friday’s Fitchburg State College Circuit Race that was won by Tina Pic (Colavita-Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light). Evelyn Stevens (Team Lip Smackers) took advantage of a three-second time bonus for finishing third on the 33-mile (54 km) stage to move ahead of Powers into the overall lead.

“Honestly, I was a little relived to see I’m in second place,” Powers said late Friday night. “Now I need to race my bike. That’s more fun than sitting in and not doing much. I’m super excited. It’s game on.”

Saturday’s 64-mile (102 km) Wachusett Mountain Road Race comprises six laps of an 11.4-mile (18.3 km) circuit. Just as in Friday’s race, it is the10, five and three-second time bonuses for the first three finishers that have Powers most concerned. Five riders are within 20 seconds of the lead with two stages to go.

“We would prefer that it not come down to a sprint finish because although it might be a great opportunity for Jen (McRae), Evelyn (Stevens) also has the power to get up the climb a little better that I do,” Powers said. “We would much rather take the opportunity to attack or get away solo. We definitely want to be on the offensive.”
http://teamtype1.org

Team Type 2 Team Riders Pictured on "Diabetes Forecast" website

There is also a story on our Team Type 2 Race Across America team featured in the American Diabetes Publication, "Diabetes Forecast."
http://teamtype1.org

Fitchburg Longsjo Classic: A Mark Suprenant Photo Gallery

Westminster, Mass. – Not only was Mark Suprenant competing for Team Type 1 in the master's division of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic Thursday, but the recent Race Across America eight-person team champion was also snapping plenty of pictures.

Suprenant finished 26th in his race against the clock less than a week after completing the 3,021-mile (4,861 km) transcontinental race in a record time of five days, nine hours and five minutes. At only 8.8 miles (14.3 km) long, Thursday's race was akin to a sprint for the Milford, N.H. resident.

Here is a sampling of his work behind the lens:

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; U.S. national time trial champion Alison Powers of Team Type 1 won the Courtyard by Marriott Fitchburg/South Street Time Trial to open the 50th edition of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic Thursday.

Racing through foggy and damp conditions on an unseasonably cool New England day, Powers averaged more than 27 mph on the 8.8-mile (14.3 km) undulating course in Westminster, Mass., to win by four seconds over Evelyn Stevens (Team Lip Smackers). Stevens’ teammate, Anne Samplonius, was third, nine seconds behind Powers.

France’s Jeannie Longo (Vital Plus), a 57-time national champion, five-time world champion, four-time Olympic medalist and winner of more than 1,000 races, finished fourth, 13 seconds back.

Powers’ victory was the 26th overall by the Team Type 1 women in their inaugural season. It was also the squad’s fourth win (all by Powers) at a National Racing Calendar (NRC) event.

Team Type 1 women’s Team Director Jack Seehafer said he was unsure of how Powers would perform on a course that didn’t necessarily favor her and after a layoff since her third place finish at the Nature Valley Grand Prix nearly two weeks ago.

“This was her first hard effort as she rebuilds toward the national championships later this month,” Seehafer said.

Keeping Powers in the race leader’s jersey for the reminder of the four-day, four-stage event will mean racing aggressively during Friday’s Fitchburg State College Circuit Race, Seehafer said. The women will tackle 11 laps of a 1.2-mile (2.0 km) circuit that includes 100 feet of climbing on each lap of the 33-mile (54 km) race.

“What will work better for us is to be a little aggressive because of the time bonuses (of 10, five, and three seconds for the top three finishers),” Seehafer said. “Stevens had a good ride at Nature Valley so she’ll be one to watch and Samplonius is someone we have to keep our eye on, too. We also know Colavita-Sutter Home will be looking for stage wins and ValueAct Capital will be looking to be aggressive, too.”

Seehafer said he was pleased with the results of his entire squad, particularly the 19th-place finish of Veronica Leal (pictured above), second-best on the team and one of five Team Type 1 riders in the top 30.

"This is the first time Vero has had a time trial bike in a couple years," Seehafer said. "She's getting it dialed in at the right time with her national (Mexico) championships coming up next week."

More Coverage:

Boston Globe: Zirbel, Powers Set Pace

VeloNews: Powers, Zirbel Take Fitchburg TT

CyclingNews.com: Robust Performance From Powers

U.S. Cycling Report: Team Type 1's Powers Wins Fitchburg TT

Triplecrankset.com: Team Type 1's Powers Wins Fitchburg Time Trial

Click here for complete race results.

http://teamtype1.org

Fitchburg Longsjo Classic: Travel Troubles Affect Men's Performance

The Team Type 1 men's professional squad warms up
before Thursday's time trial at the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic.
Photos by Mark Suprenant.

Westminster, Mass. – As if dreary and cool weather on New England's coast Thursday wasn't enough to dampen the spirits of the Team Type 1 men's professional team, there was also a little matter of travel troubles that slowed the team's performance in the opening time trial of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic.

Director Sportif Vassili Davidenko could only shake his head at the logistical headaches that kept all but one of the team's eight riders from reaching the race site on time. Delayed flights and mechanical trouble to one of the team's vehicles meant the squad was distracted and not well-rested for the 8.8-mile (14.3 km) race against the clock in Westminster, Mass.

"Between the flight cancellations and the weather today, basically it was a mess," Davidenko said.

Michael Creed’s sixth-place finish on the rolling course that featured one U-turn led Team Type 1. Tom Zirbel (Bissell Pro Cycling) won the race by 23 seconds over Scott Zwizanski (Kelly Benefit Strategies). Zwizanski’s teammate, David Veilleux, was third at 32 seconds.

Darren Lill (17th), Valeriy Kobzarenko (41st) and Matt Wilson (50th and pictured at left) were also in the top 50 for Team Type 1.

Davidenko said Friday's Fitchburg State College circuit race will play to the team's strengths. The 171 riders in the race will complete 24 laps of a 1.2-mile (2.0 km) circuit for a total of 74.5 miles (120 km).

"It's a pretty difficult stage," Davidenko said. "Anything can happen at this race every day."

Seven of the team's eight riders are within 121 seconds of the lead, giving Team Type 1 several options, Davidenko said. Saturday's 109-mile (176 km) road race features plenty of climbing while Sunday's Downtown Fitchburg criterium is long enough (at 50 miles) to play a factor.

More Coverage:

Boston Globe: Zirbel, Powers Set Pace

VeloNews: Powers, Zirbel Take Fitchburg TT

CyclingNews.com: Robust Performance From Powers

U.S. Cycling Report: Team Type 1's Powers Wins Fitchburg TT

Triplecrankset.com: Team Type 1's Powers Wins Fitchburg Time Trial

Click here for complete race results.

http://teamtype1.org

Cowley's Race Within The Race At RAAM

<img style="float:right;
