The latest Easter Egg from Google lets you play a game where you have to defend your search results from the Google Os. The game simply involves double clicking on the Os to defeat them before they destroy all the search results on the page.

To play this amusing little Easter egg type ‘Zerg Rush‘ into google (or click here).

Today (30/04/2013) marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of the document that made web technology free for everyone to use and to celebrate CERN has started a project to restore the first ever website.

The website was hosted on Tim Berners-Lee’s NeXT computer and described the basic features of the web, how to access other people’s documents and how to set up your own server.

The project requires rebuilding the site pretty much from scratch and ultimately the team hopes to preserve as many of the original assets of the site as possible by restoring the NeXT computer with the same hardware and even with the same IP addresses.

Screenshot of the original NeXT web browser in 1993

The research team hope that by preserving this technology and website that future generations will have somewhere to learn about how the web began. On their website they say “… we want to make http://info.cern.ch – the first web address – a destination that reflects the story of the beginnings of the web for the benefit of future generations.”

Learn more and keep up to date with their progress by visiting http://first-website.web.cern.ch/

Divine Departures are a funeral planning service that help their customer organise their funeral the way they want it. They felt that their website didn’t give the right first impression and approached us to redesign the site to better reflect their company philosophy.

Using their existing branding we created a website that better reflected their company and also changed the page structure so that it would be a lot easier for visitors to navigate and get to the information that they needed.

It was also important that they were able to update their own content, so once the structure and design was approved we built the site on a content management system. This gave them full control to be able to easily and quickly update all the information on their website.

Cherubs Jewellery is an e-commerce website that specialise in jewellery to suit every budget.

We were asked to design some email newsletter templates that would allow Cherubs to keep their customers up to date with their latest news, new jewellery ranges, special offers and promotions that they offer throughout the year.

Here are a couple of examples of the email newsletter designs we have created for cherubs Jewellery:

Email newsletters and e-shots are a very powerful and cost effective method of targeting customers and keeping them up to date with your latest news and offers. The software that we use can also help you measure your results by providing a lot of useful statistics that can help you improve future campaigns.

Last Friday (1st March) Google released a new live infographic called “How Search Works”. The infographic reveals some of the factors that go into how their search engine works, from crawling & indexing to their algorithms and spam fighting.

Alongside the inforgraphic is a small video by Matt Cutts, the head of webspam at Google which also informs on how a search works.

But maybe a little more interesting is their page about their battle to fight spam, which includes a live spam updates that shows examples and screenshot of recently removed websites from their search engine. It also goes into detail on the types of things Google considers spam such as, cloaking and/or sneaky redirects, hidden text, keyword stuffing, unnatural links to a site and thin content with no value.
