The critical point with the Reliance 3G Tab is the price. What this does is lowers the entry price barrier for branded tablets. We were pretty impressed by the performance in general. While it isn't a multimedia or gaming powerhouse, the 3G Tab does a little bit of this and a little bit of that- steady performance, good battery life and a surprisingly sleek form factor. We have used this tablet as a Wi-Fi hotspot continuously for 6 hours, and there was still a lot of battery left. You do sacrifice on certain things – just okay display, touch response that is slightly iffy at times and a bad camera. The 3G Tab is network locked to the Reliance 3G network on GSM.

Despite having the same 1GHz Cortex A8 processor as most of the rivals, it has by far the best benchmarking figures when compared to all Android tablets in the sub-Rs 15k price bracket. A minimalist UI over Android 2.3 has retained performance along with functionality. The MTab has 8GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot and a USB hub (compatible with data cards as well). No real faults with the build quality - even the plastic seems quite solidly put together. The 7-inch display felt better than quite a few of the rival tablets. This could just be the perfect “first” tablet experience, without paying a lot for it!

I would go on to say Microsoft has managed to offer a better user experience than what Android offers, at least as far as the UI slickness and the ability to add a lot of visual goodness on hardware that Android would usually struggle to make a good impact on.

The Omnia W walks the line of brilliance in terms of performance. The 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display, 5MP camera and 8GB internal storage make up the critical specs. Add an excellent battery life, and what you have is a very capable smartphone.

Symbian Anna: Will not walk into the sunset, without a fight

Nokia E6: Trust us when we say this, we were delighted to use the E6 when it was launched, back then in the summer of 2011. It was succeeding the hugely successful E72, which had the performance and class going for it. If you still are a fan of Symbian and want to stick with the OS, the Anna update is good news!

The E6 has a lot going for it. A slim form factor, high quality build, very comfortable keypad, good display with a sure touchscreen, better than expected camera and an excellent battery life – the list of positives is quite long. On the flipside, the E6 is surprisingly heavy. We have seen the E6 retailing for about Rs 17k, and what you get for that money is a well-built smartphone with a touchscreen and physical QWERTY keypad. Those among is who cannot do without a physical keypad, this is a phone that you must consider.

Bada OS: Now in its teen years!

Samsung Wave III: If we look at the Wave III as an individual smartphone, it delivers on the two critical aspects - performance and build. However, you do begin to wonder at this point on how this is likely to compete against the likes of Android and now Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango).

Since Bada OS is Samsung’s baby, it did take some time for the apps ecosystem to take off. And now it has, and as we speak, there is a complete transformation of the Bada App Store from what we saw when we had reviewed the phone. If you spend Rs 18k on this, you are surely going against the flow of Android and WP 7.5 devices. However, for the explorers of the tech world amongst us, this may just be a very interesting journey.

Android: Love it or hate it, but…

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro: For a price of under Rs. 15k, what you get is a tiny little smartphone that doesn’t miss out on any features. The Mini Pro has a side slide out QWERTY keypad that builds on the surprisingly comfortable 3-inch touchscreen.

While it may have reduced comfort during the touchscreen usage sometimes, the portability enhancement is something that cannot be missed. Android 2.3 is layered with the Timescape UI that has the edge menus as well. The performance thanks to the 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM is very good. And it is much better looking than the predecessor, the Xperia X10 Mini Pro, that just looked plain cheap, to be honest.

BlackBerry OS: Reinventing itself. Or at least is attempting to.

BlackBerry Curve 9360: For a company that is struggling to keep its grip on the smartphone market, it hasn’t lost its sense of classiness. The BlackBerry Curve 9360 is by far the best-looking Curve handset, ever.

The moment you thought of a Curve smartphone, you would visualize a plasticky build quality and an iffy keypad. In this case, it is a combination of a sleek form factor, a classy finish, good display and a new OS. However, all is not well - keypad feels a little on the hard side and the battery will last you a day, at the max. However, for the consumer, we would recommend this simply for its extremely classy looks. Just makes the money spent all worthwhile, well somewhat!

Kingston launches SSDNow V+200 drives

Samsung Galaxy Nexus coming to India in March

Samsung's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based smartphone, Galaxy Nexus, is likely to arrive in India in March. The launch of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was pushed till January after Samsung said it had “many products” scheduled for December.

Samsung India on its official Twitter account said that that the smartphone is going to be launched in March but didn't supply exact dates. In another post, Samsung India promised to give updates about the Nexus smartphone once it got more information. The official registration page of the handset, however, still has the product listed as “coming soon”.

To refresh your memory, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus sports a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels, a 5MP rear autofocus camera with LED flash and 1080p HD video recording capability, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, 16GB or 32GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD, choice of HSPA+ or LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n connectivity, NFC connectivity, USB2.0 connectivity, a 3.5mm audio jack, a gyroscope, a barometer, and a 1,750 mAh battery to power it all.

It now appears that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus may not be the first ICS-based smartphone in India. Huawei's Honor is reportedly arriving in India in February with the ICS update. It's notable that other manufacturers such as LG and Sony are also rolling out ICS update for their respective premium smartphones.

Dual-core HTC Primo leaked, bearing Super AMOLED screen

After the leaks of the HTC Ville and HTC Edge, details about another HTC device have been leaked, called the HTC Primo.

All three phones are expected to be released at Mobile World Congress in February.

According to an anonymous source, who provided the details to Stuff.tv, the HTC Primo will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onboard with HTC Sense 4.0, and bear the following specifications: a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass, a dual-core 1GHz Qualcomm processor, and 512MB of RAM.

The HTC Primo has an f/2.0 aperture 5MP camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities.

LG CX2 images surface online; rumoured as LG Optimus 3D 2

Back in September, we had reported that LG is prepping a 'slimmer version' of its Optimus 3D smartphone. Well, recent media reports suggest that LG's Optimus 3D 2 is going to be officially launched at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress 2012 event.

Reports of the LG 3D 2 smartphone were triggered by the leaked images and specs of a new LG smartphone codenamed CX2.

Last round of rumours had suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S III will be quad-core based and will run on the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. And now it's being rumoured the Galaxy S III will arrive in the market by April 2012.

The rumours come from the tech blogger Eldar Murtazin, who in a series of tweets, claims that the Samsung Galaxy S III will be indeed launched at the MWC and will go on sale in April, exactly a year after its predecessor Samsung Galaxy S II was launched. Murtazin has also revealed a few specifications of the new Samsung device. These include an HD resolution display, a 12MP camera and a 1.5-1.6GHz quad-core processor. Murtazin also hints that the operating software also has a few tweaks, which may be Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. Referring to the performance of the Galaxy S III, Murtazin says the new device is "definitely fast".

LG rolls out Gingerbread update for Optimus Black devices

LG has finally started rolling out Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update for its Optimus Black devices. LG had announced the roll-out of the OS update for the Optimus series back in November last year.

The Gingerbread update will be first available in Europe and then will be rolled out in India.

The Android 2.3.4. Gingerbread update will bring a range of new features to the Optimus Black device, including better mobile gaming experience, an improved UI and support for new media formats such as AAC, AVC, MPEG 4 and H.263. The new OS update also includes active app management, shortcuts, widgets, icons, app groups and improved e-mail synching and camera auto-focus features.

The update is certainly going make the Optimus Black users happy. However, the OS update appears to be little old and late, considering most of the manufacturers including LG are now focussing on the latest Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream sandwich.

Google integrates its privacy policies and terms of service

In an effort to reduce the complications of having over 70 privacy documents and terms of service across their products, Google will be combining most of them to make a single overarching Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service for most of its products, such as Google+, Google Calendar, Google search, Gmail, and YouTube.

The changes will go into effect on March 1, with the internet services giant notifying Google Account holders starting today via email, and a link on its search page. Google hopes to integrate its “different products more closely,” and deliver a “beautifully simple, intuitive user experience” across Google products.

Clarifying, Google says the new privacy policy will be written in a clear and easy to understand manner, explicitly detailing the user information the company may use to deliver personalized and individually relevant search results and advertisements. The aim will be to treat a user as a single individual across all of Google’s products.

The new move was announced on a Google blog post, with Alma Whitten, Director of Privacy at Google’s Product and Engineering division, insisting that Google’s treatment of privacy will not change. Users will still be able to migrate their data away, and be reassured that their data will not be sold or shared to any third-parties.

Google is also looking to provide users with more control about how their information is used, with services like Ads Preferences Manager a step in that direction. The company has definitely learnt from its mistakes with the launch of Buzz, when it inadvertently shared users' oft-used email contacts.

YouTube hits four 4 billion daily video views

Google's video sharing website, YouTube has achieved a few remarkable milestones – the site has surpassed 4 billion video views every day and over 60 hours of video upload every minute.

To celebrate the milestones, Google has launched a new interactive website, called onehourpersecond.com. The new site features quirky animations and trivia to help users visualise how massive YouTube's figures are.

“Since the dawn of YouTube, we've been sharing the hours of video you upload every minute. In 2007 we started at six hours, then in 2010 we were at 24 hours, then 35, then 48, and now...60 hours of video every minute, an increase of more than 30 percent in the last eight months. In other words, you’re uploading one hour of video to YouTube every second. Tick, tock, tick, tock — that’s 4 hours right there!” announced Google on its YouTube blog.

Referring to the 4 billion video views milestone, Google pointed out that the figures are up 25 percent in the last eight months. “And the equivalent of more than half the world’s population watching a video every day, the same number as there are US $1 bills in circulation, the same as number of years since there was water on Mars...it’s a big number, and you’re making it bigger every day,” notes Google.
