Apple really gave a big kick start to the Virtual Assistant era. This 2012 can be named as the year of Virtual Assistants without any doubt. By the end of this year we will see atleast 50+ virtual assistant apps in Android Market and App Store to compete and replace SIRI. Though we dont have such an exact competing Assistant so far in the market, the new SARA virtual assistant may challenge SIRI with her humble responses, device support and language support as well.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview arriving on Feb 29

Did you know that 2012 is a leap year and Microsoft plans on making good use of the day, which comes just once every four years. On February 29, Microsoft will release Windows 8 Beta for public download. The Beta will officially be known as “Windows 8 Consumer Preview” and will be made available to users to download and try out. Like all public Betas from Microsoft, there will be an expiration date, telling you till when you’ll be able to use it, but like always, there will be a hack out that will allow you to bypass that and use it for a longer period.

From the screenshot above, we get a little glimpse into what to expect from the nearly finished product. The desktop seems to be quite a departure from what we’re typically used to. The icons seem to be very similar to Win 7, at least the recycle bin does. The taskbar also seems to be borrowed from Windows 7, where one can pin frequently used apps for quick access. However, there doesn’t seem to be a ‘Windows’ button in the bottom left corner. The system tray has also been done away with and instead, we have a console on the left with options for toggling different networks. The design elements for this section are influenced heavily by Windows Phone 7. Given the fact that users will be able to switch between the standard Windows desktop and Metro UI-like interface seamlessly, we’ll have to just get accustomed to this new hybrid interface. Windows 8 will also be very customizable, so we guess you’ll have the freedom to move things around the place to suit your needs. Windows 8 will be based on a brand new kernel and the same will make its way to tablets and other portable devices as well, like phones, in order to deliver the same experience. It appears that this MWC will be one of the most action packed events in a long time and one that you should definitely not miss.

Ban on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, 8.9 in Germany Stays

Coming in as a major update to the ongoing Apple vs Samsung lawsuit, a report in Bloomberg Businessweek confirms that Samsung failed in its attempt to steer clear of the German sales ban effective on its ambitious Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet (or Galaxy Tab 10.1N as it is referred to in Germany) that was appealed to by Apple. A ruling delivered by a higher regional court in Duesseldorf, Germany revealed that the sales ban decision also covers the Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet, and that a separate hearing announcing it wasn't required. Presiding Judge Wilhelm Berneke, while delivering the ruling stated that the decision was justified under German competition laws, and that Apple shouldn't rely heavily on a European Union design to secure victory.

The presiding judge, Wilhelm Berneke was quoted by this report as saying, "Samsung wrongfully takes advantage of the enormous reputation and prestige of the iPad,” Berneke said. “Samsung unfairly imitates the iPad with its tablet. Samsung unfairly imitates the iPad with its tablet." Germany, for a while now has been witnessing a bitter battle between Apple and Samsung over a host of patents, which each one says has been infringed by the other. Samsung's ambitious Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9 have been caught in the tangle.

Couple of months ago, Samsung's attempt at evading the sales ban, by introducing slight changes to its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet's design, and even went to the extent of renaming their tablet to Galaxy Tab 10.1N, while in Germany. While this did raise objections, back then, the presiding judge dismissed them stating that by slightly redesigning the tablet, Samsung had "moved away sufficiently from the legally protected design". Now, however, it seems like Samsung ran out of luck. Needless to say what the ouster from the German market could do to the future prospects of the tablet, and Samsung, considering Germany is an important market in Europe for Samsung.

NVIDIA Launches India's First GPU Computing Social Networking Group

NVIDIA has announced the launch of an online platform dedicated to GPU computing and High Performance Computing (HPC) users in India. The informal special interest group will bring together GPU users from all fields and experience levels in India, including academicians, researchers, scientists, device manufacturers, system integrators, service providers and all early adopters of HPC and GPU computing. The group, hosted on Meetup.com – the world's largest network of local groups will provide HPC and GPU computing enthusiasts in India with a comprehensive platform to track industry trends and engage with each other, discussing the latest developments in the field.

The group, supported by NVIDIA, will have a core group of key academicians to lead and moderate discussions. The site will feature a bank of research papers, case studies and posts on the latest technological developments, not only at NVIDIA, but also in the global industry. The platform will also encourage users to engage in group chats and web conferences to interact with each other. NVIDIA will periodically host live talks with industry experts to elucidate on pertinent industry updates.

How to Root Android Mobile Phone

Android phones by default has a user privilege which has certain limitations in accessing system directories. As you can see in Linux operating systems, security is the primary concern and by default users will not have root privilege as there is a possibility of security issue becomes ease. You have to login as a root user in order to access system directories and files in Android mobile.

How to Root Android Mobile Phone:

1. Z4root is an .apk file which is used in rooting your android phone. You can download Z4root here and keep the downloaded .apk file in your desktop.

2. Connect your phone with the computer and enable use storage to copy the downloaded file into your mobile.

Popular Indian hacker, Ankit Fadia's site hacked

Ankit Fadia has been in the news for being one of India’s first ethical hackers. He has been recognized by a number of software companies. Reportedly, just a few days back, Ankit Fadia’s official site got hacked by a group called Team Grey Hat. The hackers seem to have gotten access to the files on his server. A Pastebin dump has been setup that shows screenshots of the files.

The note by the hacker group rubbishes Ankit Fadia as a hacker and his courses. The pastebin dump also mentions the database details, including the username and password used. The Hacker News claims that the site was also hacked by another hacker - Himanshu Sharma, who’s said to be well known in the circles at the age of 17.

Ankit Fadia was seen on several TV shows, recently as a host offering tech and security advice to his viewers. At the same time, there have been a bunch of other activities, such as writing security books, that have been published in the market. He’s also known to give talks and speak in seminars on security related topics. There have also been reports that books written by Ankit Fadia contain plagiarised content.

How to - Create a secret partition on a pen drive

There is no way you can partition USB pen drives. They show up as a removable drive on the PC. In order to do so, you need to trick the operating system into recognizing the USB pen drive as a fixed hard drive. To do this, you will need to create your own set of drivers. In this workshop, we shall demonstrate just that. Doing so, you can create multiple partitions and store your private data on it. Only the first partition will be visible, and the other partitions will not show up on any other PC, but your own.

This way, you can store your personal data away from your friends and family, and also you can avoid viruses affecting this data when plugged in on another computer. To do this, all you need is a simple universal USB pen drive driver, which can be downloaded from ‘http://www.mediafire.com/?oqlgdvcymzz’. Download the archive, uncompress it to a folder on your desktop and get started. Don’t forget to backup the contents of your pen drive, as it will format it.

Step 1: Plug in your pen drive into your PC’s USB port. Next, right-click on ‘My Computer’ and click on ‘Manage’ in the context menu. Click on ‘Device Manager’ on the left pane. This will show all the hardware devices connected to your PC. Now, on the right pane, scroll down to ‘Disk Drives’ and you should see your pen drive connected here. Right-click on the pen drive and select ‘Properties’.

Step 2: In the properties window that just opened, click on the ‘Details’ tab. From the scroll down menu under ‘Property’, choose ‘Device Instance Path’. You should see a string of characters highlighted in the ‘Value’ window below, which should read something like ‘USBSTORDISK&VEN_&PROD…..’ Right-click on this value and select ‘Copy’. Now close all the windows without saving changes.

Step 3: Now open the folder that you uncompressed after downloading the universal USB flash drive driver. In this folder, find and open the file named ‘cfadisk.inf’ in ‘Notepad’ or any test editor you prefer (Notepad++ is ideal to be used here’ (download from ‘notepad-plus-plus.org’).

Step 4: Now locate the words ‘device_instance_id_goes_here’, which is available on line 26. You need to replace these words with the string you just copied to the clipboard from the Device Manager. Save the file and close the editor.

Huawei MediaPad now selling at Rs. 28,000

New tablets are being churned out at some crazy speeds and it’s not just International brands, but even local brands are clamouring for a slice of the lucrative market. Now, we have the Huawei MediaPad finally making it to the online marketplace in India. As a reminder, the Huawei MediaPad was launched way back in November, but due to some unprecedented reasons, the tablet got delayed. The MediaPad is currently priced at Rs. 28,000 on online selling store Let’s Buy. Now, we won’ t blame you, if you have no clue about the specs of this device, with the plethora of tablets already announced, and to be announced; so here’s a look again.

Huawei’s MediaPad is a 7-inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet powered by Qualcomm’s dual-core 1.2GHz processor. That means that it’s quite similar to the Galaxy Tab 620 we just reviewed a couple of days back. In terms of specs, it offers a 217 ppi IPS screen with a WXGA (1280X800 pixels) display, 1080P full HD playback and SRS enhancements. The MediaPad features a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera and a 5 megapixel auto focus rear facing camera with HD video recording capabilities. Connectivity options include a 3.5mm jack, HSPA+ 14.4Mbps, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11n. The MediaPad has Flash 10.3 support, full HDMI output and comes with a 4100 mAh battery.

At this price and with these specs, the MediaPad directly competes with Samsung’s 7--inch Galaxy Tab 620 we just reviewed. Again, that was a brilliant device and had the same 7-inch form factor with Honeycomb on it, but it’s a full two grand cheaper at its market price than the MediaPad that is selling at 28k. Plus Samsung and Huawei aren’t exactly on the same level in terms of consumer acceptance. If this one would have been priced at somewhat close to 20k, it would have definitely raced ahead in competition against the other Android tablets. Acer Introduces $329, 10-Inch Android Tablet

Acer today introduced a 10-inch, Ice Cream Sandwich-ready Android tablet that will sell for 35 percent less than the iPad's $499 price, at $329 for its entry-level 8GB model. There will also be a $349, 16GB model.

The Acer Iconia A200 will initially ship with Android 3.2 Honeycomb on Jan. 15, but it will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in February, the company said.

The biggest feature on this new tablet is the price, but there are some interesting things buried in the spec sheet. The A200 has a full-sized USB port, for instance, to attach hard drives, keyboards and mice; there's also a MicroUSB port and a MicroSD memory card slot. While there's no rear camera, the front-facing camera is 2 megapixels, allowing for high-quality video chats.

Otherwise, this is a 10-inch tablet like many others: a pretty standard size and weight at 10.2 by 6.9 by 0.48 inches (HWD) and 24.6 ounces; with the usual Nvidia Tegra 2, 1-GHz dual-core processor; 1280-by-800 LCD screen; Bluetooth 2.1; and Wi-Fi for connectivity. The front of the tablet is black; the back comes in red and gray versions.

Acer said the dual 3260mAh batteries are good for eight hours of use.

Acer tried to dress Honeycomb up with its "Acer Ring" tool, which brings up key apps and settings when you tap on a home screen icon. But otherwise, Acer seems to have left Android pretty unmolested.

"The primary focus here is to bring the pricing down, make it more affordable but still maintain the large screen," product manager Eric Ackerman said. He hinted that Acer's press conference at CES, on Sunday, January 8, may introduce other tablet models as well.

"It would be logical to presume we're working on a next-generation 10-inch tablet of a high caliber," he said. "The tablet market is a fun category in that it refreshes quickly, and [moving quickly] is one of our strengths."

Will Android Tablets Succeed?

The Iconia Tab A200 follows up on last year's 10-inch A500 and 7-inch A100, which were pretty good value performers in the Android tablet realm. But the entire product line suffered from the fact that Google-approved Android tablets just haven't taken off, thanks in large part to Google's poor handling of tablet apps in the Android Market.

Google's Ice Cream Sandwich, hopefully, will change that situation by making phone and tablet apps more similar and compatible with each other, although we'll have to see if that actually plays out.
