Most of the drivers on busy streets love Waze – a Google Maps alternative to navigation with a social twist and an enthusiast crowd.

Why people love Waze?

In short, we all love Waze, sometimes even over Google Maps, is because of its real-time traffic coverage, constant alerts on road hazards and accidents, effective re-routing based on traffic congestion and sometimes to avoid cops.

Another great feature on Waze is the ability to “add a stop” on the way. For example, if you are driving from house to work and want to pick your friend on the way – no problem. But I can’t do that with Google maps.

Google Maps and Waze Navigation

Most of these features are not available on Google maps or at least don’t work as intended. (I never noticed if Google Maps rerouted me because of congestion.)

However, all these features could become part of Google maps soon. As the tech giant has acquired Waze for over a Billion dollar. (Read Official announcement)

No doubt Google has a leg up on mobile navigation, but Waze integration in Google Maps will make it the best.

I am very excited to see this merger happen. One I would be able to use the best of the both worlds soon and second I don’t have to install two apps on my Android phone.

I always considered Waze as a better alternative to Google maps because of its involved community of drivers and its ability to route me to a better path on busy streets.

Windows 8

Let’s look at some of Windows 8 advanced features and functionality:

Interface

Many of the changes in the Windows interface deal with improving the user’s experience when using touch screen devices such as a tablet. The Start screen is similar to the one used in Windows Phone, and it contains customizable tiles that link to applications. “Live Tiles” can display information that remains current. Windows allows you to snap the applications to the side of the screen to facilitate multi-tasking. The “PC Settings” application is an alternative to the familiar Control Panel that’s optimized for touch screens. However, PC Settings doesn’t provide many of the advanced features that are available in Control Panel.

Online Services

Windows 8 is more tightly integrated with online services. You can log in to a Microsoft account and access services that allow you to synchronize the settings between different devices. Access to Microsoft’s SkyDrive is also available with this version of Windows, so you can save files to a remote location. Windows is bundled with multimedia applications for the Xbox 360 console such as Music, SmartGlass and Video. Applications bundled with Windows also allow you to access services such as Facebook and Flickr. Windows ships with Internet Explorer 10 as a desktop application and an application that’s optimized for touch screen.

Windows Store

Windows Store applications are new with Windows 8 and are optimized for touch screens and more specialized than the applications on the desktop. These applications can run while docked to your screen or in full-screen mode. Windows Store applications can also provide notifications regarding their status on your screen by animating their Live Tiles. A set of hooks known as contracts provide common functions such as searching that allow these applications to integrate with other applications. Windows Store applications run within the Windows Runtime, a set of APIs that support C++, HTML, JavaScript and .NET.

Security

Windows 8 also has new security features such as picture passwords and PINs that are intended for touch screen users. Windows Defender now has antivirus capabilities that are similar to those in Microsoft’s Security Essentials. The “Secure Boot” feature prevents malware from infecting the system during the boot process by verifying the OS’s integrity with a public key. Parental controls in Windows now allow parents to control and monitor their children’s Internet activities. The new “Reset” and “Refresh” function allow the new version of Windows to perform an integrated system recovery, including recovery from a USB drive.

During my trial, I did find some bugs though and it was not very smooth.  The app crashed several times including phone restart once.  It took time to load.  However, the collection and the existing playlists come in handy, anytime you wan to listen to latest Bollywood music.

I am sure the developers are working hard to resolve issues.  I found the UI also a bit boring.  It doesn’t seem to follow the holo design guidelines as well.  Hopefully we see a better experience soon.  The latest Bollywood songs collection is a huge plus in this crowded market of music streaming services.  Android and iPhone user interface is not different at all.  You get the same experience at least no matter which device you use.

To be frank, I liked the Windows Phone app interface.  Very clean and works well.  I think it takes clues from Windows 8 app.

Job hunting is becoming like a constant phenomenon.  People start searching for the next job within couple of months of starting a new job these days.  Long gone are the days of being loyal to a particular company and work there for the entire career.

The job market is hotter than ever and you will be surprised to know that there is no lack of openings for the right candidate.  However, there are many positions that can’t be filled either because of scarcity or the competition in market to get the right candidate.

Like I said in my previous post – Google is on the roll these days.  Major UI overhaul but consistent interface throughout in all Google apps, that’s the theme with Google.

Today’s GMail update is no different. At the core new GMail brings better categorization and easy email organization.

Google automatically categorizes different types of emails – social notifications, deals and offers, receipts and finally emails from important people.  On the desktop, you will see emails in these categories as different tabs in the new inbox.  You may however drag and drop to adjust emails in these categories, if you find some emails out-of-place.

Gmail Desktop

Along with the desktop inbox, Android and iPhone apps are also getting these updates.  When you launch GMail on these devices, you’ll see the Primary mail and from there you can navigate to other tabs easily.

New Gmail Android App

New GMail Inbox is being rolled out as we speak.  Everyone should have these updates soon.  Keep an eye on that ‘Gear’ icon and select Configure inbox when it appears in settings options.  Meanwhile, watch new Gmail Inbox demo:
