Google can accept Sitemaps in a number of formats, but Google encourages the use of Sitemaps that use the Sitemap protocol, both because it enables site owners to provide additional information about site pages beyond just the URLs, and because Google offers this protocol under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License so that other search engines can make use of it. We hope that site owners can create a single Sitemap for all search engines to use.

All Sitemaps, regardless of format, have the same guidelines. Mobile sitemaps have additional guidelines. If you are unable to create a Sitemap, you can still add your site to your Google webmaster tools account to view statistics and errors for it.

The formats available for Sitemap files are:

Sitemap protocol This is an open-source Google-created protocol in XML format. A Sitemap file that uses the Sitemap protocol can contain a list of URLs for your site, along with useful information about those URLs. You can use the Google Sitemap Generator to create a Sitemap that uses this protocol, or you can create it manually or use a third-party generation tool. Google recommends this protocol, since it's scalable and it enables you to provide specific information to Google about each of your URLs (such as when each page was last modified and which pages have the highest priority).
OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) This is an application-independent interoperability framework based on metadata harvesting. Generally, you would use this format only if you already have a site that uses this protocol. You can't use this format for Mobile Sitemaps.
Syndication feed Google accepts RSS (Real Simple Syndication) 2.0 and Atom 0.3 feeds. Generally, you would use this format only if your site already has a syndication feed. Note that the feed may only provide information on recent URLs.
Text file You can provide Google with a simple text file that contains one URL per line. However, Google recommends that once you have a text sitemap file for your site, you use the Sitemap Generator to create a Sitemap from this text file using the Sitemap protocol. You can then edit this file to provide additional information about your URLs such as when they were last modified and how often they change.

Once you have created your Sitemap, you can add it to your Google Sitemaps account and update it as your site changes.

The Sitemap Protocol allows you to inform search engines about URLs on your websites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap that uses the Sitemap Protocol is an XML file that lists URLs for a site. The protocol was written to be highly scalable so it can accommodate sites of any size. It also enables webmasters to include additional information about each URL (when it was last updated; how often it changes; how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Sitemaps are particularly beneficial when users can't reach all areas of a website through a browseable interface. (Generally, this is when users are unable to reach certain pages or regions of a site by following links). For example, any site where certain pages are only accessible via a search form would benefit from creating a Sitemap and submitting it to search engines.

This document describes the formats for Sitemap files and also explains where you should post your Sitemap files so that search engines can retrieve them.

Please note that the Sitemap Protocol supplements, but does not replace, the crawl-based mechanisms that search engines already use to discover URLs. By submitting a Sitemap (or Sitemaps) to a search engine, you will help that engine's crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

Using this protocol does not guarantee that your webpages will be included in search indexes. (Note that using this protocol will not influence the way your pages are ranked by Google.)

Google adheres to Sitemap Protocol 0.9 as dictated by sitemaps.org. Sitemaps created for Google using Sitemap Protocol 0.9 are therefore compatible with other search engines that adopt the standards of sitemaps.org

Template tags for site feeds

Teknobiz - This an intro to make template tags for you. Very basic but you have to start somewhere. site feeds can help you a lot coz it make your reader find your site content. You can put it on sidebar or anywhere else.

Your site feed settings offer numerous options for post and comment feeds on your blog. To help your readers find links to these feeds, we've got a couple of tags you can add to your template. Newer blogs - or new templates applied to older blogs - will have these tags already, but you'll need to add them yourselves if you're using an old template from before you upgraded your Blogger account.

The first piece of code can go in your sidebar, or wherever you'd like it to appear. It looks like this:

Depending on your settings, this code will provide links to a feed of all your blogs posts, and/or a feed of all the comments on all your posts. If you're using both types of feeds, the result on your page will look like this:

If you're using per-post comment feeds, you'll want to use this second piece of code as well. You'll probably want to put it inside the tags along with the rest of your comment code. It looks like this:

This will create a link to the site feed containing comments on the current post only. Its output is similar to the previous section:

Finally, you may have noticed that there are

tags with IDs around each of these Blogger tags. These are optional, but if you want to customize the format of these links, you can add some code to the style sheet in your template. To do this, find the tags in your template, and add the following code between them, substituting whatever CSS you want to use:

#blogfeeds { [insert formatting here] } #postfeeds { [insert formatting here] }

If you don't know CSS, or aren't sure what to put here, then don't worry about it. By default, it will inherit the same style as the rest of your template, which will usually look just fine.

Webmasters Can Now Auto-Discover With Sitemaps

Since working with Google and Microsoft to support a single format for submission with Sitemaps, we have continued to discuss further enhancements to make it easy for webmasters to get their content to all search engines quickly.

All search crawlers recognize robots.txt, so it seemed like a good idea to use that mechanism to allow webmasters to share their Sitemaps. You agreed and encouraged us to allow robots.txt discovery of Sitemaps on our suggestion board. We took the idea to Google and Microsoft and are happy to announce today that you can now find your sitemaps in a uniform way across all participating engines. To do this, simply add the following line to your robots.txt file:

Sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml

Please provide the complete URL for your Sitemap on this line. We will pick it up wherever you put it in your robots.txt file. This directive is not specific to user-agent. If you have multiple Sitemaps, you can point to your Sitemap index file on this line. Details about the Sitemaps protocol including this addition are available on the protocol website -- http://www.sitemaps.org.

If you prefer, you can continue to issue Sitemaps to Yahoo! Search by simply inputting the URL for your Sitemap and submitting. Or add feeds to a site you are already managing under 'My Sites' in Site Explorer. This also allows us to provide more feedback to you about what we are doing with the sitemap.

We're also happy to have some east coasters, Ask and IBM, announce their support for Sitemaps. The more the merrier!

Blogger's Layouts feature makes it easy for anyone to customize the look of their blog with little or no technical knowledge. If you're the sort of person who really likes working directly with the code, though, that's fine, too. Just go to the Template tab and click on the Edit HTML sub-tab.

The first thing on this page is an option to download a copy of your template to a text file on your hard drive. We highly recommend doing this if you've made any interesting customizations to your design at all. Then, if you make a mistake editing your template, or if you just don't like the way it comes out, you can revert easily by uploading the same file again.

Next comes the actual code for your template. You'll notice it looks somewhat like regular HTML and CSS, but also includes lots of custom tags that make it compatible with our drag-and-drop layout editor, and with the font and color picker. If you want to make extensive changes to your code, you'll want to read up on these tags first:

You'll also see an option to "Expand Widget Templates." By default, each page element is shown in the code as a one-line placeholder, whose options can be set in the graphical interface on the Page Elements tab. Turning this option on will show the complete data and template for each element. The code is simpler the first way, but you have more control the second way, so use whichever option you prefer. Below the code, you'll see three buttons for "Clear Edits," "Preview," and "Save Template," which all do what you'd expect them to.

There are also two links referring to your "classic template." If you converted your blog from the older style of Blogger templates to the new Layouts version, then your classic template is the last template you used in the old system, with all your customizations. If your blog was created on the new system and has always used Layouts, then your classic template is a default, classic version of the original design you chose when you created the blog, without any customizations. The "View" link will show you the code, in case you just want to check up on something, or copy a piece of it for your new design. The "Revert" link will erase all the customizations you made in the Layouts feature and set your blog to use the old-style Blogger template again. Note that you will not be able to use the graphical Layouts interface in this mode (though you can convert back to Layouts again later).

resubmit sitemap

How do I resubmit my Sitemap once it has changed?

You must initially add your Sitemap to Google webmaster tools using your Google Account. When your Sitemap changes, you can resubmit it to Google to let us know. You can resubmit your Sitemap in one of two ways:

Sign into Google Webmaster Tools with your Google Account
Click the URL for the site you want.
Click Sitemaps.
Select the Sitemap you want to resubmit, and then click Resubmit Selected. The Submitted date will update to reflect this latest submission.
Send Google an HTTP request. If you do this, you don't need to use the "Resubmit" link in your Google Sitemaps Account. The Submitted column will continue to show the last time you manually clicked the link, but the Last Downloaded column will be updated to show the last time our system has fetched your Sitemap.

To resubmit your Sitemap using an HTTP request:
Issue your request to the following URL:

www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=sitemap_url

For example, if your Sitemap is located at http://www.example.com/sitemap.gz, your URL will become:

www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=http://www.example.com/sitemap.gz

URL encode everything after the /ping?sitemap=:

www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ping?sitemap=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yoursite.com%2Fsitemap.gz

You can issue the HTTP request using wget, curl, or another mechanism of your choosing. A successful request will return an HTTP 200 response code; if you receive a different response, you should resubmit your request. The HTTP 200 response code only indicates that Google has received your Sitemap, not that the Sitemap itself or the URLs contained in it were valid. To obtain status information about your Sitemap, resubmit it using your webmaster tools account. We recommend that you resubmit a Sitemap no more than once per hour. An easy way to do this is to set up an automated job to generate and submit Sitemaps on a regular basis.

Note: If you are providing a Sitemap index file, you only need to issue one HTTP request that includes the location of the Sitemap index file; you do not need to issue individual requests for each Sitemap listed in the index.
