Those who follow American Airlines on Twitter saw an interesting post from AA yesterday. It seems that American has decided (after testing in several markets) that those passengers “without overhead luggage can board before Group 2”. The twitter message specifically said

According to the “Boarding Progression” chart provided by American Airlines, if you have no carry on or just 1 carry on that fits under the seat, you can board as soon as Group 1 boarding completes (the order varies just slightly depending on the plane and if it offers Two-Class or Three-Class service).

In addition, some media outlets are reporting that American Airlines will also offer passengers who get to the gate with an overhead carry-on the opportunity to “Gate Check” their luggage to the destination at no charge. If that’s the case, that would be big as the check luggage fees range from $25 (1st bag) to $35 (2nd bag) for flights within the us (Note: It appears you will be picking up your luggage at baggage claim, even if you gate check) .

So why do this, simple faster turn around. As one who travels a lot, what you will find on many flights is the one traveler with 2 or 3 GIGANTIC carry-on bags who usually boards in group 2 or group 3 will stand in the plane aisle about row 12 or 13 fighting to try to get the bags that barely (or don’t really) fit squeezed into the over head bin. While that is happening, over half the plane stands behind them in the aisle (or on the walkway to the plane) waiting. Like a freeway traffic accident clogging up the road. What this change does is not eliminate that traveler with the GIGANTIC bags, even though hopefully some of those people will take advantage of the gate check, but it takes a lot of the people who would get stuck waiting and puts them in their seats 1st. So hopefully once GIGANTIC BAG person gets their stuff in the overhead, the plane is loaded and ready to go.

On Friday the popular daily deal site LivingSocial announce a breach of its system that could affect up to 50 million users. According to information posted on LivingSocial

“LivingSocial recently experienced a cyber-attack on our computer systems that resulted in unauthorized access to some customer data from our servers. We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate this issue. The information accessed includes names, email addresses, date of birth for some users, and encrypted passwords — technically ‘hashed’ and ‘salted’ passwords. We never store passwords in plain text.”

The information provided by LivingSocial also says, “The database that stores customer credit card information was not affected or accessed”. As a precaution, even though the passwords were encrypted and should be “difficult to decode”, they are “expiring your old password and requesting that you create a new one”.

If you visit the LivingSocial site, you will find a notice on the top of the page that will allow you to “create new password”. Once you click on that link, you will be taken to the “please reset your LivingSocial password”.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind if you have a LivingSocial account

Change your password on any other sites on which you use the same email address / password as your LivingSocial account

If you get an email claiming to be from “LivingSocial” and asking you for personal or account information, DO NOT TRUST IT! “LivingSocial will never ask you directly for personal or account information in an email”

From the LivingSocial FAQ:

Q: I’ve never bought anything from your website, how did you have my information?

A: If you signed up to receive emails from LivingSocial, your email address was in our system

Q: How can I pick a secure password?

A: The most secure passwords use a combination of capital and lower case letters, numbers, and special symbols like “!” or “$”. This prevents malicious parties from using dictionary attacks to guess likely combinations of words.

Q: Did LivingSocial report this incident to law enforcement?

A: Yes, we are actively working with law enforcement to investigate this issue.

Q: Why did I receive an email about a security incident at LivingSocial when I unsubscribed from emails?

A: Many LivingSocial customers choose to browse and buy on our website, but opt not to receive daily emails. We have attempted to contact anyone potentially affected by the security incident even if you have unsubscribed from LivingSocial marketing emails. If you have already opted not to receive email distribution, you will not receive marketing emails from LivingSocial.

This week Google added a new “afterlife” feature to many of its Google products. In this day and age, a large part of our daily life centers around what we do online. However, what happens to our online life once our real life comes to an end. Taking the lead on the afterlife question, Google has now added an Inactive Account Manager feature to many of its products, from +1s; Blogger; Contacts and Circles; Drive; Gmail; Google+ Profiles, Pages and Streams; Picasa Web Albums; Google Voice and YouTube. The new Inactive Account feature allows you to “choose to have your data deleted — after three, six, nine or 12 months of inactivity. Or you can select trusted contacts to receive data from some or all of the following services”. Prior to Google triggering the afterlife feature, they will send you a text message (if you have set up your phone in the settings), or send you an email to the secondary address you provided in the settings, just in case you are still around and just haven’t used your account.

As stated by Andreas Tuerk (Google Product Manager), in a post on the Google Public Policy blog

We hope that this new feature will enable you to plan your digital afterlife — in a way that protects your privacy and security — and make life easier for your loved ones after you’re gone.

Setting Up Inactive Account Manager

Go to the Google Account Settings Page, after you sign into your Google Account

Once you get to the Account Settings Page –> Select Learn More and go to Set up (toward the bottom of the page), under Account Management.

You will now see the Inactive Account Manager, information page, that explains more details to the various options you have available to set up. Once you reach this page, click on the blue Setup button to start the afterlife configuration.

On the next page, in the 1st section you will add a phone number (which is required) and you have an option to add an alternative email. This information will be used by Google to notify you before Google deletes or sends your data to those you list.

In the 2nd section, you will list the Timeout period that Google will consider before it deletes or sends your account information to those you select. This timeout period is based on the time without signing into your account. You can select 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year. If you don’t sign into your account during the pre-selected time, then Google will assume you are surfing the web in another dimension.

In the 3rd section, you can add the name and email of up to 10 trusted people. You can then list what information you want to send to each person. You can even include a custom email response to each person explaining to them what they are getting in the email and any additional information you want to include.

In the 4th section, you can choose to have Google delete your account at the pre-selected time.

Lastly, at the bottom of the page, select Enable to activate the Inactive Account Manager.

Notes

I would suggest talking to the people you are going to select prior to setting this up. It may be a MAJOR shock to the people you listed as trusted contacts if they just “randomly” receive an email with your information, once you are gone. In addition, during the set up, you are asked to include the email address and phone numbers of your trusted contacts, if they change their phone number or email, you will want to know so that you can update your settings.

In the configuration, you can select to just have your information deleted without sending any information to anyone. The choice to send your data to anyone is entirely up to you.

As someone who has had to help friends deal with online information of loved ones that have passed, setting the Inactive Account feature will help allow your friends and family closure and access to information they may want to keep to remember you.

Normally Microsoft does not respond to scams but it appears a current Xbox points scam is so prominent, that Microsoft has taken the unusual step of responding to it via the Microsoft Facebook page.

As the notice states, it seems a scam offering “Free Xbox points for wishing Microsoft a happy birthday”. The scam is using the 38th anniversary of Microsoft, which is correct, as a hook to try to trick people into falling for the scam. As Microsoft puts it, “While our 38th anniversary is this week, there won’t be free Xbox points for the occasion…..”. Keep in mind that even though the scam may appear to be legit, the scam does have one BIG “typo”, in that points for Xbox are known as Microsoft points, NOT Xbox POINTS.

So as always, remember the old saying “If the deal seems to good to be true, it probably is”……
