With high-end specifications and the latest version of Android, there have always been plenty of reasons to covet Google's Nexus smartphones. The fact they get latest updates first and are always incredibly well priced certainly helps out too.

Now that the Google Nexus 4 is essentially sold out here in the UK, and beginning to look a little outdated compared with the likes of Samsung's Galaxy S4, the HTC One and Sony's Xperia Z1, it's basically common knowledge that Google is looking to launch a successor.

We can't be too far from an official reveal now, so we've gathered all the news, rumours and leaks in one place to give you an idea what to expect from Google's upcoming flagship smartphone.

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 MANUFACTURER

Like all of Google's own-brand products, the Nexus 5 will be manufactured by a partner rather than the company itself. Although companies including Asus and Samsung were rumoured to be on the shortlist, LG was widely expected to handle manufacturing duties as it had done previously with the Nexus 4.

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 NAME

Seeing as Google recently refreshed the Nexus 7 with a 2013 model that shares the same name, there was originally some speculation that the company would do the same with its smartphone. However, because the number relates directly to screen size, rumours of a larger screen naturally introduced a new name too - hence Nexus 5.

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 SPECIFICATIONS

When a detailed service manual got leaked online last week, we got a near complete list of Nexus 5 specifications. Considering LG's lawyers had the manual pulled shortly after it appeared, it's almost certainly accurate, although naturally it is still possible for things to change at the last minute. Even so, this sneak peek suggests the Nexus 5 will be something of a smartphone powerhouse.
According to the leaked information, the Nexus 5 will have a 5.2in OLED display with a Full HD, 1,920x1,080 resolution. It will have a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 System-on-Chip (SoC) running at 2.3GHz, paired with 3GB of PDDR3 memory. Phones will be available in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage.

These components are virtually identical to LG's own G2 smartphone, but the Nexus 5 will almost certainly not use the G2's rear-facing buttons - more on design below.

The high-end internals were seemingly confirmed by a set of leaked benchmark results, which put the Nexus 5 among the very best Android smartphones when it comes to performance.

An eight megapixel camera sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS) was mentioned in the service manual, along with a 1.3-megapixel front-facing webcam. The Nexus 5 may also get a smart GPS-assisted camera module. According to a recent Google patent filing, the Nexus 5 could tie the camera's settings to the GPS location to help you shoot better pictures.

According to the patent, the camera is aware of its location and the current weather conditions. Combined with the accelerometer, light sensor and temperature sensor, it could fine-tune settings automatically to produce the best results. Whether this is software or hardware-based remains to be seen - if it's done in software it could be rolled out as part of Android 4.4 KitKat, but if it uses dedicated hardware it could be limited to the Nexus range.

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 DESIGN

We got a cheeky first glimpse of the Nexus 5 when Google revealed its Android 4.4 KitKat statue in front of the company headquarters. A Google employee was holding a Nexus smartphone that clearly wasn't the Nexus 4.

Google didn't do a very good job keeping it hidden, as it was spotted again a few weeks later in a US bar. The handset, which was apparently left charging unsupervised by a Google employee, has the same horizontal Nexus branding, oversized camera lens and small LG logo on the rear.

A further leak came courtesy of the MacRumours forum, where user Weespeed posted the above image along with some early impressions of the device. Apparently the rear cover has a similar feel to the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet and feels smaller than LG's own G2, but has a merely "Ok" display that doesn't impress as much as Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 phablet.

When it comes to colour, we initially thought the Nexus 5 would only come in black, but it appears that a white model may also be on the cards. The latest set of leaked images, courtesy of Korean site underkg, don't show the handset itself but instead reveal the packaging. On it, the Nexus 5 is clearly shown with a white rear panel. Unlike other white phones, like Samsung's Galaxy S4, it appears to keep the black front panel of its darker brother.

ANDROID 4.4 KITKAT

Almost all Nexus devices launch with a brand-new version of Android, and now that Google has signed a deal with Nestle to call version 4.4 KitKat it seems almost certain that the Nexus 5 will be the debut device for the updated OS.

Android 4.4 KitKat is still very much under wraps at Google, but that hasn't stopped several purported screenshots from appearing online. 9to5Google has several images which apparently show redesigned stock apps including Messages and the phone dialler, as well as a new, flatter user interface that looks more than a little like Apple's iOS 7.

The images are a little dubious because they show inconsistencies in the menu and notification bars - although Google hasn't exactly stayed consistent when it comes to design in the past, the odd use of transparency leads us to think these are full screen mock-ups, rather than actual applications. Even so, they could mirror Google's intended updates to its stock Android apps.

Other features haven't been leaked yet, but further performance tweaks and an update to the user interface should be on the way.

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 RELEASE DATE

At the beginning of the year, many were expecting Google to reveal a new Nexus alongside the latest version of Android at its annual IO conference. The may event came and went without either product making an appearance, however, as did the launch of the refreshed Nexus 7 tablet.
The 14th of October was widely tipped as a possible launch date, which would be roughly one year after the Nexus 4 made its October 2012 debut, but the latest rumours have suggested a one-day delay and an October 15th reveal.

GOOGLE NEXUS 5 PRICE

We've now received the first official price news, courtesy of a Play Store leak by Google itself. The 16GB model will cost $349 in the US, which is roughly £215 before taxes and VAT here in the UK.
When Google launched the new Nexus 7 at a higher price than the 2012 original, all rumours that the Nexus 4's successor would match its incredibly low price went out the window. With such high-end internals mentioned in numerous leaks, the smart money would have been on the Nexus 5 costing significantly more than the Nexus 4. Rumours from PhoneArena suggested the 16GB model would cost $299 while the 32GB version will cost $399. That's roughly £180 and £250 respectively, albeit before taxes and VAT.

We still don't know UK prices, or how much the 32GB model will cost in the US - that will have to wait until Google makes the Nexus 5 official, or we get another leak before the announcement.

We'll know for sure when Google makes the Nexus 5 official, so be sure to check back next week to see if the rumours were true.

HTC One Max | Review

Announced earlier this week, HTC's latest smartphone is a phablet with a huge 5.9-inch display that features HTC's industrial design and a fingerprint scanner. But is this the handset to get given there are plenty of other high-end options such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the LG G2 and the Sony Xperia Z1?

Upside

If you love big-screen handsets, the One Max delivers this in spades. The large 5.9-inch screen packs a full-HD 1,920x1080-pixel resolution, which gives it a pixel-per-inch value of 373ppi. That's none too shabby, which means text on screen will be sharp.

Apart from the obvious giant display, the One Max features HTC's industrial design found on its earlier flagship, the HTC One and the HTC One Mini. The One Max comes clad in aluminum, and has a removable back cover. However, the only use for removing the back cover is to access the microSD card slot -- the battery is non-removable.

Another new thing that we've previously seen on the Motorola Atrix and more recently, the Apple iPhone 5S is a fingerprint scanner. Unlike Apple's TouchID sensor though, the one found on the One Max requires you to do some swiping with your finger (instead of just holding it there).

Besides using it to unlock your phone, the One Max's fingerprint sensor lets you use three different fingers to open apps. This should make it useful for quickly getting to your favorite app, or even turning on the Ultrapixel camera.

Like the HTC One, One Mini and Butterfly S, the One Max sports a 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera. This will mean that great low-light shots, but the lower-megapixel count will result in smaller pictures as well as a lack of details when compared with pictures taken with an 8- or 13-megapixel shooter.

HTC will also be making accessories for the One Max, and this includes a Power Flip case that adds an additional 1,210mAh battery and a BoomBase speaker cube. The HTC Mini (a phone-shapped Bluetooth accessory) also makes a return in the form of the updated Mini+ and there's also a new Bluetooth tag that alerts you if you leave your phone behind.

Downside

There's such a thing as being too big, and one of the reasons why I liked the HTC One was that it stayed under 5 inches and could be reasonably used with one hand. The One Max may appeal to those who like watching videos on their handsets, but those who want to type one-handed on a crowded train will have issues stretching their thumbs.

While you have a removable back cover this time around, there's no having access to the battery means you won't be able to swap it out when it runs flat. The 3,300mAh battery should mean that it will last for at least a day, though.

Unlike other flagship handsets, the One Max comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at 1.7GHz. This is unlike the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Sony Xperia Z1 with their Snapdragon 800 chips. If you ask me, the One Max feels like a handset that should have made its debut earlier in the year.

Outlook

While pricing has not been announced for the region, the One Max will be available globally from mid to end October. There's no word on specific availability just yet for countries here in Southeast Asia, but it seems the phablet will hit Malaysia sometime in November. Given its lackluster specs (compared with other flagships) and lateness to the market, the HTC One Max may not get the warm reception that it needs for the Taiwanese company to make a dent in the phablet category.

DIY: Make Your Own USB Cell Phone Charger

This time I am going to start a new series of articles related to projects and DIY (Do It Yourself) stuffs. This will be the very first one, do tell me what do you think about this new initiative.

Today, I am going to teach you- how to make a USB Cell Phone Charger at home.

Step 1: Tools

1. Altoids tin.
2. Old wall/car charger that fits your cell phone.
3. Male USB.
4. 220 ohm resistor (red-red-brown).
5. LED (color is up to you).
6. Power Switch.
7. USB extension cable (just in case you can't fit the USB plug directly into your computer).

Step 2: Getting Started

Now I'm sure most of you know what the leads on USB ports look like, and how all you will need are the 1st and 4th leads (Red, that's your positive 5V, Black

is the ground). Just cut of the white and green wires if you have them, if all you have is the metal male USB part, then you just solder wires to the first and last

leads. Now connect the positive wire (negative will also work) to your power switch. Then from the other wire on the other end of the switch, connect one end

of the 220 resistor (a higher resistance would also work, it just depends on high bright you want your power light to be). And from that connection between the

wire comming from the switch an end of the resistor, also run a wire directly to the positive (red) wire comming from the cut-off end of the charger (you just

need the side with the adapter that plugs into your phone, it should only have 2 wires, (+) & (-) ).

Step 3: Jam the crap in there.

After soldering the wires together, and wraping em with electical tape (better yet, heat shrink),cut a square hole in the front of the altoids tin that the USB plug

come out of.... Once you get the right size (I just used my pocket knife to cut through the tin), wedge the USB in through it, and glue it in, I just used hot glue,

but super glue or silicon would work better.

Cut, or drill the hole in the lid for the LED. Once you wedge that in, glue it in also.

Same deal for the power switch, and cord exiting going to your phone. Dont be bashful with the glue/filler, cause the most secure everything is, the longer it'll

last.

Step 4: Done!!!

You should be done! Plug your altoids tin into your computer (if it doesn't fit, simple run a USB extender cable (1 male end w/ a female on the other) from the

tin to your comp. The LED should light up, if not, flip the power switch. If the LED still doesn't turn on, then you did something wrong. If it lights up when you

turn on the switch, plug it into your phone. If your phone doesn't reply like it should, quickly disconnect it and back track. Thank you for checking out my

With new advances in movement come matches dominated by boggy midfield battles. Step-based locomotion results in players forcibly pushing off from their back feet when pivoting and adjusting weight to shoot, but although a (apologies in advance) stride towards TV realism, it's a slight step backwards gameplay wise.

All your favourite footballers have apparently been taking lessons from the heavier Ronaldo, bloated blunderers prone to clumsy unforced errors. They overrun balls, stop and start like battered cars, and swivel like a dodgy shopping trolley. Famous videogame villains have nothing on FIFA 14's evil spectre - momentum.

Players are more error prone, too. Despite sussing out opponents by learning animation lengths or the flights of balls, or even marking potential targets, there's no guarantee foresight or wiliness will pay off. Such unpredictability isn't true to what is in essence a cerebral game. It's realtime checkers on luminous turf, players positioning pieces then executing plans.

There are protocols and contingencies. Ever wonder why you get hammered online? Your opponent is five moves ahead of you. You can certainly improve, but to the uninitiated it just feels awkward. You've noticeably less control this season.

"THE UNPREDICTABILITY IS GOOD NEWS FOR LONG-DISTANCE SPECIALISTS SUCH AS BALE AND GERRARD"

Shooting's another story. The same unpredictability that makes dribbling a hassle is good news for long-distance specialists such as Bale and Gerrard, who'll unleash red-hot balls able to dip and swerve with newfound lethality. New animations are welcome (during our recent lunchtime session, a standing, outside-of-the-boot effort into the top corner by Man City's Negredo brought a collective 'oooooh!' from onlookers).

There's no higher chance for that shot to find netting, so don't expect basketball scores, but when it does - oh man. Essentially, Pure Shot adds a fresh array of outcomes to goal efforts, and it's FIFA 14's best bit.

FIFA's physicality is its edge. Players aren't clothed by invisible shields like PES's boxy men - they feel like they're interacting, fighting for headers and barging for balls like in some highly paid competitive contact sport or something.

It's the little touches, too. While we'll have to wait on the next-gen versions before we see true TV-style presentation (FIFA could learn a lesson from PES here), where nervous managers chomp gum and a random guy in the crowd stands and raises both arms above his head for no reason whatsoever, details impress.

Questionable fouls result in your man adopting the universal 'I'm innocent!' pose, and in injury time players will rush to take throw-ins with greater urgency. At one point during a Premier League fixture, another broadcaster chimed in with live score updates. Our commentator, Clive Tyldesley, talked over him when we scored, then later apologised for the interruption.

That's on the pitch, but what about off it? The addictive Ultimate Team returns with an Xbox-exclusive hook in which the likes of Lineker, Bergkamp, Maldini and Pelé can be bought and traded. New skill games allow you to navigate gauntlets of plastic yellow men, race motorised cut-outs like a dog chasing a rabbit, slalom poles, and knock down towers of evil cardboard boxes.

Then there's the career, in which you can take on roles of both player and manager. As a real world man or created Pro, you'll skip the managerial gubbins, simply building skills in matches and responding to emails from your agent between them.

Management is more in depth, with potential Mourinhos juggling contracts, nurturing youth academy talent, and striving for league targets set by the board.

Both sides of the career let you play as the entire team, but only player mode gives you the option to control one player.The Global Scouting Network is career mode's biggest improvement. You'll hire up to six scouts, each given star ratings for experience and judgement, then set parameters, and finally unleash them. Want a pacey left-footed Bulgarian teenager? You got it.

They help in transfers, too; put a scout on someone who's caught your eye and they'll tell you how much he's worth, and how likely he is to join you (in Messi's case, us managing Watford, the answer was several lols and a troll face).

Online is much the same story. Seasons mode is best for those who simply crave ranked exhibitions, with the chance to rise from league ten to one. There's also 11v11 Pro Clubs (players create their own teams and invite friends); co-op seasons; 2V2 matches; unranked head-to-heads, and friendlies featuring variable rules.

Additionally, you can splurge points earned online on classic kits, new balls, Pro gear, skill boosts and ridiculous celebrations (favourites include the prancing bird, hulk out, and chicken dance).

FIFA 14 returns as the same ludicrously comprehensive sports game it's ever been, where any one mode could easily see you through to next season and beyond. Those small and clumsy steps it takes backwards, courtesy of Precision Movement, do little to spoil the party. It may be slightly slower and a little worn out in the legs, but FIFA 14 is still king.

BERLIN (AP) — Sony Mobile unveiled a new addition to its Xperia smartphone lineup Wednesday: a device that sports a massive 20.7-megapixel camera and is capable of attaching better lenses.

The Xperia Z1, presented in Berlin two days before the annual IFA consumer electronics show there, is Sony's attempt to leapfrog rivals such as Nokia and Samsung in the race for the phone with the best camera.

Its standout features are a high-resolution lens built into the camera, and the option of controlling detachable lenses from the phone's 5-inch screen.

According to Sony, the lenses can also be used with other Android phones and even Apple's iPhone.

The Z1's camera functions are further supported by a large image sensor and dedicated apps that allow users to stream video directly onto their Facebook page, store images online and search for information about whatever their viewfinder is pointing at.

The phone, previously codenamed Honami, comes with 2.2 gigahertz processor and a waterproof aluminum case.

SONY LAUNCHES NEW XPERIA Z1 AT IFA BERLIN

Sony is all set to unveil a new flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z1, as the action kicks off at IFA 2013 in Berlin.

The Sony Xperia Z1 is of the most eagerly anticipated smartphones of this year. The rumour mill is abuzz that Sony's next smartphone will feature a 20.7-megapixel rear camera accompanied by G lens and BIONZ mobile image processing engine. Looking at flagships from major competitors such as the Nokia Lumia 1020 boasting PureView technology and the HTC One sporting the UltraPixel technology, we can expect Sony to come with some new innovation in its camera sensors.

The Xperia Z1 has been rumoured to feature similar hardware specifications as found in Sony Xperia Z Ultra. It is likely to be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz with Adreno 330 graphics.

As evident from the previous leaks, the device is rumoured to come with 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage with support for microSD card. A 3000mAh battery is said to back the device. The Sony Xperia Z1 will most likely run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Additionally, Sony is expected to unveil Cybershot QX100 and QX10 'Lens-Style Cameras' that can be attached to any Android or iOS smartphone. The Sony Cyber Shot QX10 is likely to come with a price tag of around $250 and an 18.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor and 10x optical zoom. The QX10 has been also rumoured to come with built-in Optical SteadyShot, to keep the handheld pictures and videos steady and blur-free.

On the other hand, the Sony Cybershot QX100 will be the more expensive of the two lenses and will come at around $500. The QX100 is expected to feature a 20.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor which is identical to the sensor found in the Cyber-shot RX100 II camera. The sensor is paired with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 3.6x optical zoom and a BIONZ image processor.

Sony said the Z1 will go on sale later this month.

Its was quite suprising today when all of a sudden Micromax shown a teaser of the new Micromax Canvas 4 in between the ad break during ICC Campions Trophy 2013.While there is no real news on the “Micromax Canvas 4″ (expected name) we expect the following specs :

Sony Xperia Z Ultra | Exclusive Preview

Phablet market is growing rapidly and the reason for this tremendous growth is that they offers a very big screen and on the other hand they are easy to carry and fits into the pockets. Joining this race Sony has officially teased a phablet-like phone. The Japan firm has released a press invite notice showing off the side view of a device that looks like a phablet with a slim profile.

The big indicates that the device may be Sony’s much-rumored phablet. As per XperiaBlog, it is looking as written by a stylus that gives more credence for the device to be a phablet. The rumors suggest that the upcoming Sony phablet is to be called as Xperia Z Ultra, and is to carry a huge 6.4-inch display with a lot of exciting features and capabilities.

If the rumor is true, the Xperia Z Ultra will be the largest phablet out in stores. Of now, Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 has this title, before taking it over from Huawei Ascend Mate 6.1. With such a bigger display, the Ultra may also act as a superb midranger between a smartphone and a midsize tablet. Well, it will combine the portability of a phone, and power and usability of a tablet PC.

But, unlike the Mega 6.3, the Xperia Z Ultra is to feature a FullHD display. It will reportedly get power form a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2GB RAM and 16GB of expandable memory. The rear camera will have an 8MP sensor, and moderate front camera will also be there. It will be running on the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean at launch. Amazingly, like the Xperia Z, it is also going to be water and dust resistant.

Lumia EOS Smartphone with 41MP PureView Camera

Few days ago Samsung has announced Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, saying it would be the PureView killer. But it seems like Nokia is not going to take any chance though the PureView 808 is far far ahead of Galaxy S4 Zoom, Speculations are around that Nokia is launching its Windows Phone 8 version of PureView smartphone as Lumia EOS, which will also have 41 MP camera.

Last week many web-sites have published images of a Nokia smartphone that has massive camera module with XXMP sensor, PureView technology, xenon flash and Carl Zeiss lens assembly. It was generally believed that the product was the highly-discussed code-named Eos smartphone. It was indicated back then that the device is ready and is awaiting its formal introduction. With the Zoom Reinvented event set on July 11, 2013, as well as confirmations from Nokia’s representatives, it is obvious that the company is going to unveil the new Lumia handset with ultra-high-end camera at the show.

Based on images published by GSMArena and ViziLeaks, Nokia Lumia smartphone with 41MP image sensor code-named Eos is made of polycarbonate and has design that is similar to that of Nokia Lumia 920/928.

Specifications of the product are unclear, but given that Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 application processor that powers the second-generation Lumia phones does not support camera resolutions higher than 13MP, it is unlikely that Nokia will use this chip. It is more likely that the company will use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 (with 21MP camera support) or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 application processor that supports up to 55MP image sensor. Given the fact that the Snapdragon 800 and 600 are quad-core application processors, their support will only be a part of Windows Phone 8 general distribution release 3 (GDR3) update due only later this year. Therefore, either the new Lumia Eos is at least a quarter away, or Nokia have implemented a different way to support the high-resolution image sensor.

The original PureView technology introduced with Nokia 808 smartphone featured a large, high-resolution HES9 41MP sensor from Toshina with Carl Zeiss optics and an innovative pixel oversampling technology. At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8MP) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable, according to Nokia. At high-resolution (38MP maximum) it means the ability to capture an image, then zoom, reframe, crop and resize afterwards to expose previously unseen levels of details.

If Nokia launches the Lumia EOS smartphone-cum-camera, then I am pretty sure that this will be a new trend and Nokia would become the best camera phone manufacture in the world, no matter what HTC do with the ultrapixel technology Nokia will still be mile ahead of them with their image quality and other feature.

Hashtags For Your Facebook Newsfeed

Hashtags are the best way for the website and the search engines to crawl across in order to search a specific content. Twitter has been using hashtags for a very long time now. Now get ready to see a lot more of the # symbol in your Facebook Newsfeed. Over the next few weeks all Facebook users will be able to include a hashtagged phrase, like #royalbaby or #puppies, in their posts and then watch it become clickable.

When a hashtag is included in a post, clicking on it will pop out a feed that aggregates others posts that have been tagged with the same phrase. The move will make it easier to find what other people are saying about specific topics and events, something that people have typically gone to Twitter to do over Facebook.

"To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about," Facebook's Greg Lindley wrote on the company's blog today. "To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook."

But why hashtags and not some other symbol or method? Facebook says that hashtags are already all over the service thanks to posts from Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter.

"Hashtags are already happening across Facebook, but now they will be clickable and it will pop out a hashtag feed," a Facebook spokesperson told us. Facebook also added that hashtags have become a huge part of Internet vernacular.

Facebook users will be able to search for a specific hashtag from the search bar and compose posts directly from the hashtag feed. Facebook also clarified that hashtagged posts will still respect the regular privacy settings. If you include a hashtag in a post going out to just your friends, only your friends will see it appear in that hashtag feed.

While Twitter popularized the method of tagging content, it wasn't actually Twitter that invented the hashtag. The idea was actually invented in August 2007 by Chris Messina, now a user experience designer on Google Plus. His idea was to create a place to group different tweets and he proposed the idea of using the "#" symbol.

Microsoft Xbox One | Exclusive Review

Microsoft is hosting an event at its Redmond, Wash., headquarters today, and has announced the successor to the Xbox 360, the Xbox One. It's Microsoft's first new console in over seven years.

The Xbox One is large, sleek, black, and looks like a piece of AV equipment. The controller and Kinect unit are redesigned, too. Xbox promises that this is a better- connected way of linking TV, games, and entertainment in one unit -- something the Xbox 360 already does, but will do more via commands like "Xbox On."

Home Entertainment

Microsoft promises that you're "going to have a relationship with your TV." The next Xbox tries to take on a living room that has become "too complex," and make a system that knits games, TV and entertainment.

There are universal gestures such as grab and pan and swipe up: watching live TV will involve maximizing and minimizing the screen in a top corner. Live TV will be part of the Xbox One experience, via HDMI-in. Yes, cable TV looks like part of the package.

The Xbox One knits together new voice commands to do some PC-like stuff: order movie tickets, for instance, engage in Skype, or pull up fantasy sports stats while watching a game.

Specifications

Under the hood, details so far include: an 8-core processor, 8GB of RAM, Blu-ray, USB 3, HDMI in/out, and a 500GB hard drive. Besides all of this, Microsoft is promising a new operating system fusing Xbox and Windows.

Xbox One architecture has "three operating systems in one": Xbox, a kernel of Windows (perhaps like Windows RT), and a multitasking interface. The idea seems to be that this console will be a multitasker at heart.

New Kinect-

A new Kinect comes with the Xbox One, with improved accuracy. There’s a 1080p camera, Skype connectivity, and understanding of rotational movement in a structure like skeleton. Microsoft even claims the new Kinect can read your heartbeat. It can also recognize your controller, not just your hands--suggesting use cases that sound a little like the PlayStation Move’s wand.

New Controller-

The Xbox controller’s gotten a revamp with an integrated battery, improved ergonomics, a better d-pad, and improved-response triggers. It looks similar but has gotten a bunch of gamer-oriented tweaks.

SmartGlass-

The tablet-based SmartGlass experience will be around on Xbox One, and will work as before with a variety of phones and tablets.

Xbox Live

Built on the existing service and user names, the new Xbox Live promises 300,000 servers for Xbox One, a whopping number. Matchmaking services will work while doing other tasks like watching movies or web-browsing, and bigger, faster-connecting matches are promised, too.

Games

Microsoft plans 8 new franchises for the Xbox One in the first year, a hopeful sign for a platform that’s become too sequel-dependent. Of course, Forza 5 was shown off, but a new game called Quantum Break from the developers of Alan Wake looks like the sort of game we’re more used to seeing from PlayStation: a big-studio design and cinematic feel.

TV on Xbox

“Xbox is going to be the next water cooler.” That was said during the Xbox event to discuss the Xbox One's role as a social TV platform. To that end, it sounds like Microsoft is developing TV shows and original programming for the Xbox One, making a greater leap into Netflix-like original programming. Steven Spielberg announced a new Halo TV series,

and the NFL demonstrated some level of interaction with fantasy stats and Skyping with NFL broadcasts.

Is it a Camera or a Phone? Its Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom!!!

I have to say that 2013 is the best year ever for any gadget and technology lover's life because of something or other is launched everyday. And just like that Samsung Electronics has expanded the S4 family yet again with the 16-megapixel Galaxy S4 zoom, a lighter version of last year's Galaxy Camera. The Galaxy S4 zoom can be described as an S4 mini with a 10x optical zoom attached to the back of it, according to Ben Wood, director of research at analyst firm CCS Insight.
The camera-phone's arrival scoops a reported Windows Phone version of Nokia's 41-megapixel 808 PureView and should leave camera makers like Nikon and Canon a little concerned, he said.

In less than two weeks, Samsung has launched two tablets and four smartphones, including the Galaxy S4 zoom. The company is expected to launch more products at an event in London on June 20. "It currently has the scale and confidence to put multiple new products into the market. By doing that it is leaving competitors with little room to maneuver," said Wood. In addition to an optical zoom, the latest phone has a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, optical image stabilization and a xenon flash. Users can take up to 4 photographs per second.

"If you have it with the camera piece down on a table it just looks like a really bulky phone. But if you flip it over, it just looks like a camera," Wood said. On the software side, Samsung has implemented a feature called In-Call Photo Share, which allows users to capture and send an image directly to whoever they are talking to via MMS. The Galaxy S4 zoom weighs 208 grams and the body is 15.4 millimeters thick. In comparison, last year's Galaxy Camera weighed 300 grams and was 19.1 millimeters thick.

The zoom has a 4.3-inch screen with 960 x 540 pixels and is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Just like the other members of the S4 family it runs Android 4.2. Internal storage of 5GB is available to the user, and this can be expanded with a microSD card. Samsung will release a 3G version and an LTE version of the S4 zoom. The smartphone can also communicate using Wi-Fi, but unlike the original S4 it doesn't support the latest high-speed version, 802.11ac. Samsung didn't say how much the Galaxy S4 zoom will cost, or when it will ship. The S4 family now consists of the original model, the mini, the Active and the zoom.

This is one of the most awaited game for every gamer like me. We saw the preview at end of last year. Many critics says that this is the best story-plot of the year and will make you cry once you end the game. Well I was already looking forward to it and finally it has launched a couple of weeks ago and today I bought the game for a review. Here we go!!!

The downfall of civilization redefines moral boundaries. No longer do labels like thief and murderer mark you as a criminal; everyone must steal, must kill, must do whatever it takes to survive.
Humans roam in packs like feral dogs, claiming their territory and killing anyone who encroaches on their turf. Paper-thin alliances link individuals together for mere flashes, their connections severed once their mutual needs are met. Life is bleak, brutal, and exhausting. Tomorrow doesn't exist when the stench of death lingers like a fog and hope was extinguished years ago. There is only today; there is only right now. Morals? Morals won't put food in your mouth or a roof over your head. Morals are for the weak. And you're not weak.
One night the heart of society beat loud and strong; the next it was silent. The outbreak happened so quickly that there was no quarantine plan in effect. Infected monsters crashed through their neighbors' windows, smashed the doors to splinters. Husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, dead before they could react, or worse. Maybe they became one of the infected. The virus spread through major cities and suburbs, and the military, with all of its training and weapons, was powerless to stop the epidemic. Joel is just one man amid a sea of people whose lives have been destroyed by the infection, but who still cling to life. Though he never asked for such power, he now holds the key to saving the world.

Joel is introduced the night society falls. He stays out late and works questionable jobs, all while his daughter waits patiently for his return home. He's distant, physically and emotionally, which makes it difficult to empathize with him. His actions are often repulsive, as inhuman as the zombies he must fight. The door to his heart is sealed shut. The Last of Us shines a light on the nastiness that only surfaces in humans who have nothing to lose. Rather than overcoming these limitations, Joel is crushed by them. He's unlikeable to his very core, a man who spits out angry words and appears to harbor even more sinister thoughts that remain unsaid. He kills because everyone must kill. But he kills with such fury that it disgusts even those who are used to this violence.

Joel, already accustomed to a life of brutality and focusing on his own needs, has partnered with a woman of a similar disposition. Tess is a badger let loose from a cage. To cross her path is to sign your own death warrant. She, like so many of the characters in The Last of Us, has a one-note personality that allows little room for a more nuanced interpretation. Her independence and ruthlessness are thrust to the forefront; empathy and humanity are nowhere to be found. Such flimsy characterizations erect an emotional barrier for the first few hours of this adventure. The postapocalyptic world is not interesting enough on its own to draw you in. Without any sympathetic characters to latch on to, you are left with little attachment to this pack of selfish animals.

That changes once Ellie joins your party. Unlike Tess and Joel, Ellie is easy to relate to. In this world of constant danger, she is scared. Scared to be ambushed by a zombie without a guide to protect her. Scared to meet a person who would rather kill her than talk to her. And her fear is not just for her own life. All of her loved ones have died or departed, so she's scared of losing someone else. Yet unlike so many others in this world, Ellie is not ruled by her fear. She talks like a girl in search of normalcy, whistling or humming during quiet moments, fantasizing about swimming lessons, and laughing about the problems that used to haunt girls before the outbreak. Boys? School? Problems that seem pitiful when your stomach has been growling for days and you have watched a zombie kill your best friend, yet Ellie remembers them. In her remembrance of the past, she exhibits a strength of will that most adults have lost. Ellie is both strong and vulnerable, smart and naive, and her humanity provides the impetus to push you through to the bitter end.

Ellie's maturity and resiliency make her an invaluable companion, but her worth lies much deeper than her endearing personality. She could be the savior humanity has been waiting for, and Joel has the privilege of escorting her away from the hostile city she now resides in to a faraway settlement desperate for her arrival. You travel through infested forests, dilapidated houses, and unnerving sewers, with Joel providing the brawn and Ellie the heart to brave the many dangers that stand before them. Confrontation is a last resort. Infected swarm with terrifying ferocity, clawing and snarling as they seek their next meal. The uninfected are just as deadly. With diplomacy not an option, they pursue and flank, firing high-powered rifles or swinging deadly axes, undeterred that they are trying to slaughter a middle-aged man and a young girl. Death is fast and bloody, so you slink through the shadows, staying out of sight to live another day.

However, combat in such a violent land is inevitable. The Last of Us turns the crumbling ruins of a formerly healthy world into the landmarks of unceasing war. Filter the world through the lens of dystopia, and ordinary objects take on a new meaning. Overturned tables and file cabinets provide a modicum of cover; broken windows allow for a quick escape. The zombies' movements are a confluence of contrasting images. Their staggered gait lulls you into believing they are slow, weak. But once they smell fresh meat, their movement is blindingly fast and exact. Their heads snap to attention with unsettling, insectile speed, and the unholy guttural noises that issue from their throats sound like the song of humanity's death.

So you kill them, bashing them with a two-by-four with all your strength and pummeling them into a lifeless mess on the ground. When grabbed from behind, you shove a shiv into your attacker's neck, the force of your blow causing the makeshift weapon to snap in half. A close-range shotgun blast tears zombies to shreds, but there's no time for celebration. They keep coming, eager to quell the threat that stupidly revealed itself. Such confrontations are nerve-rattling, and yet there's a hollowness to these encounters. No one wants to die--even a virtual death is unwelcome--but The Last of Us refuses to punish failure in a manner befitting the harshness of its world. Become overwhelmed and you quickly perish, but with checkpoints only a few seconds apart, the danger of expiring never dissuades you from recklessness.

The biggest problem with combat in The Last of Us, however, is how often it breaks its own rules. Mutated zombies called clickers have finely tuned ears that hear your quietest movements. And yet, your companions speak all too loudly near enemies or stand blithely in the open, all while the grotesque monsters obtusely ignore them. In certain sections, locked doors cannot be interacted with until the threat has been eliminated, forcing you to act violently even though an evasive approach seems possible. In other places, a gang of savage monsters waits patiently for you to open a door to freedom, and watches ambivalently as you close it securely behind you. The Last of Us sets rules and then ignores them, removing you from the experience as you question the underlying systems.

Healthy individuals are a bigger threat than the prowling infected. Military units and paranoid gangs hinder your escape to freedom, and are willing to gun down unknown strangers without so much as a word to figure out your motivations. Humans are more predictable than zombies, so you don't have to be scared that they're going to unexpectedly change direction. However, with guns at the ready, they can kill you just as quickly, and from a long distance away if you're not careful. Problems do exist that lessen the thrill of the fight. Your enemies are not the sharpest people around. Hide behind a corner and snap some poor sap's neck, leaving his lifeless body on the ground. When the next guard walks up, you might expect him to sound the alarm upon seeing his friend. But he often doesn't care, and so you kill again. Other times, you may be dramatically strangling a man only a few meters away from a living guard, and yet you remain unseen.

Despite the many small problems in combat, there's an undeniable tension. Vanquishing a horde of attackers is challenging, so you must fight intelligently. Combat flexibility lets you decide how each fight goes down: loudly or quietly, barbarically or cowardly, or maybe you avoid confrontation entirely. Environments are large, sprawling battlefields that allow you to move how you see fit. Hunker down behind an overturned desk and toss Molotov cocktails into the undead herd until the stench of burned corpses fills the air. Or throw a bottle at the back of a hostile foe, momentarily stunning it until you rush in with murder on your mind. Take a guns blazing approach to fill your unceasing enemies with bullets until their lives fade away.

If you take a bullet or two, your life trickles down, and you need a medical pack to regain your strength. To stay alive, you need to make use of the enticing crafting system. Scrounge materials such as scissors and alcohol, and then craft medical packs and shivs, or reinforce your melee weapon. You can only carry three of each item at a time, so you won't be able to load up on Molotovs and health packs. There are enough goods lying around to keep you well stocked throughout the game, so you never feel as if you're in over your head in a given fight. This system encourages you to search every crevice in the environment, forging a powerful connection between you and this broken world.

Aside from combat and surveying, there are puzzles to solve. These offer a quiet moment to analyze the environment, and are a welcome respite from the heart-pounding chaos of fighting. Unfortunately, you don't have to think too hard to be on your way. When deep water impedes your path, search for a wooden raft so Ellie can make it safely to shore. A ladder is needed to reach higher ground, and a plank can be used to cross a gap. The puzzles follow the linearity present throughout the adventure. There is only one solution, so you scan the environment for the button prompt that will whisk you to the next locale, never able to flex your creative muscle to find alternate routes through the wreckage.

The Last of Us offers a mundane visual representation of a postapocalyptic world. The overgrown foliage and run-down structures elicit deja vu more often than genuine awe. We've seen these images before, relayed in countless portrayals of society's end. There are a few instances of graphical brilliance, such as when Ellie and Joel are framed by a picturesque sunset, but the aesthetics are predominately ho-hum. However, the music and sound design are exceptional. Fear comes from hearing, but not seeing, your threats. Their creepy groans tell you everything you need to know about the virus that has consumed them. And though the music stays clearly in the background, it complements the emotional reactions perfectly: the hopeful serenade when Ellie gazes at escaped zoo animals, or the throbbing pulse when you're being pursued by a madman. It's a splendid soundtrack throughout.

With two teams gunning down each other, multiplayer appears to be a paint-by-numbers shootfest on the surface, but there's a refreshing feel to the face-offs. People in The Last of Us are not gifted with super heroic athleticism or regenerating health. They just want to survive. And that feeling is well translated here. Make too much noise, and you appear on the mini map, so you slowly crouch-walk through levels, trying to kill without being seen. It's tense in all the right ways, rewarding patience and thoughtfulness over raw speed. Your life is not disposable. The dread of having to craft and then apply a medical pack when a stalking enemy is in sight is tangible, and when you surprise your hunter with a shot from the bushes, you feel empowered. This feeling of desperation combines with a smart unlock system and strategy-altering goals (focus on executions or healing teammates, for instance) makes The Last of Us a unique and satisfying competitive experience.

Thrust in a lawless world, you feel the ache of a society gone to seed. The Last of Us stretches on for hours, forcing you to endure the suffocating atmosphere and unrelenting despair that citizens of this world have become accustomed to. And that time spent navigating the desolate wasteland draws you deeper inside. You read letters from people who have long since disappeared, meet groups who have created a rickety social structure to help them survive life's many threats. Most important of all, you watch Ellie grow. From feisty warmth to beleaguered exhaustion, her many moods are always twinged with a grounded levity. Her uplifting nature stands in sharp contrast to the people and events surrounding her, compelling you to protect her, shepherd her, and cherish her. The Last of Us is a singular adventure that looks the downfall of humanity in the eyes and doesn't blink.

Finally in order to takedown the Xbox One, Sony has summoned its beast the PS4 at last. Sony says the PS4 was designed with an overarching theme of a "frictionless and seamless" gaming experience. We've known that the PS4 will track both the controller in a gamer's hand, as well as their face, since the console's launch in Feb. But during his GDC talk Norden revealed some interesting ways that this technology will be
implemented in games. For example, the old multiplayer standby of split screen, divvying up television real estate when two or more players go at it, will be aided by this tracking tech. If a gamer gets up and moves right or left, his section of the screen will automatically be swapped.

Looks

The PS4 itself was shown off for the first time at E3 and it's black, just like the Xbox One. However, it has an angular design and appears to be constructed of a similar plastic to the original PS3 Slim machine. It is slimmer than Xbox One.

Release Date

The official PS4 release date is still only 'later this year'. Sony didn't reveal any more details on the release date at E3 so we're still in the dark. However, with Microsoft launching the Xbox One worldwide in November, it seems likely that Sony will be going live around this time also.
Previously, Sony took out a newspaper ad in the UK, clearly advertising the PS4 release date as '2013'. That tallies with an interview in May with our buddies at CVG, a source inside Sony said that the company is pulling out all the stops to launch worldwide in 2013 and ensure that the PS4 is not trumped by the new Xbox. Sony also advertised at the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium, London, with 'PS4 - coming 2013' signs.

Price

It'll cost $399 in the US, £349 in the UK and €399 in Europe when it goes on sale later this year. That's a whole $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.

Many gamers will be pleased that unlike the Xbox One, the PS4 will offer unrestricted access to pre-owned games. So when you buy a titles, you are free to then trade it in at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend or keep it. There is also no online check-in requirement, and you'll be able to play games regardless of whether you're connected to the internet or not. The Xbox One requires an online check-in once every 24 hours and will lock you out of your games if this doesn't happen.

Specs

AMD's technology is coursing through this new system's veins. Sony revealed the system runs on a single-chip custom processor and utilises eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores, with a next-gen AMD Radeon based graphics engine powering the way. So it's very much a PC-based system then, which is great news for developers who will find it much easier to code games for the next gen consoles and for PCs. However, that CPU is hardly next-gen - it may have been modified for this system but the AMD Jaguar platform is by no means the fastest of its kind - indeed it's slower than Intel's fastest by orders of magnitude.
However, with fewer redundancies than a PC has, the PS4 will certainly be able to make use of every single Watt of power it draws. And the games we've seen so far certainly look impressive.

The "highly enhanced PC GPU" is another AMD part - something along the lines of a Radeon 7850 card - and packs 18 GCN units. That may sound a like a lot of techy mumbo jumbo but what it essentially means is that the GPU packs 18 processing clusters, each packing up to 64 cores. That provides a lot of parallel processing power, and will thus handle the majority of the PS4's grunt work. It hits 1.84 TFLOPS of processing mojo. This is a far more powerful component than the Jaguar CPU and is may well have the edge on the integrated GPU inside the Xbox One.

The PS4 will also use GPU compute features to take advantage of the GPU's raw power - it'll be used for general computation tasks as well as making games shiny.

Memory

The PS4 will ship packing 8GB of GDDR5 memory. That's some super-fast stuff right there and should enable lightning fast performance.
Indeed, Sony has revealed that you will be able to power down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on again in seconds and pick up right where you left off. That's the sort of loading power that this memory enables.

Other specs

We're also looking at Blu-ray disk support plus good ol' DVD, plus HDMI output support as well as Analog-AV out and an optical digital output.

PlayStation 4 Eye

What's really grabbing though is the development of the PlayStation 4 Eye, a newly developed camera system that utilizes two high-sensitivity camera equipped with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views. Sony said the cameras (amounting to 1280 x 800 pixels) can cut out the image of a player from the background or differentiate between players in the background and foreground, enhancing game play handily. There's also mention of logging in using facial recognition and using voice and body movements to play games "more intuitively."

DualShock 4

If you have an eye for details you may have noticed that the PS4'sDualShock 4 controller has no Start or Select buttons. Norden confirmed this, saying that it will have a so-called Option button instead, as well as the much bandied about Share button on the rear.
The analogue sticks have been tightened up to be more precise, and the controller also features a brand new three-axis gyroscopic motion sensor with three-axis accelerometer which should be great for getting you immersed in the games. The camera continuously tracks all four controllers with precise accuracy. Rotational tracking is provided by the internal components and.
The controller has a two-point Vita-like touchpad on the front with a 1920x900 resolution, and a tactile clicking sound letting you know you've pressed it. The light bar on the front will glow different colours depending on whether you're player 1, 2, 3 or 4 and will be tracked by the new PS Eye camera. It also has an Xbox-style headset jack and a mono speaker inside it.

Video-watchers take note

This new PS4 controller won't accidentally fast forward when you set it down. Norden said this was one of the biggest complaints his team heard about the PS3's DualShock. The PS4's controller has triggers designed not to depress when set down. What's more, Norden even said he'd been dropping controllers without skipping a single frame. That touchpad on the DualShock 4 will be capable of two simultaneous inputs. The light on the controller will glow blue, red, green or pink light, depending on whether you're player one, two, three or four.

The Share button

The PS4's ardware encoder always records the last several minutes of game play without using any additional resources from the game, by pressing the Share button you can then upload or save your gameplay and show your friends or keep it just for your own amusement.

Streaming

PS4 streaming lets you stream out live gameplay to your friends. This is all built into the hardware and does not need to be supported by developers. Users can react to the video by typing comments in real time. You can do this to friends, or public.

PS4 user interface

The XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface of PlayStations past has been completely ditched in the PS4, with Sony instead choosing to design a new OS that looks a lot more like that of the Xbox 360 than the PS3.

Backwards compatibility

The PS4 will definitely not offer native support for PS3 games. However, there will at some point be a service on the Sony Entertainment Network that offers server-side emulation and streaming of games from PS One classics right through to PS3 Platinum Editions.

PlayStation Move

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation Move will play a big part in the PS4 ecosystem. However, it has not yet been revealed whether the PS4 will launch alongside a new PS Eye camera and new Move controllers or whether the peripherals are staying the same with all the enhancements made console-side.
By tracking the light bar on the DualShock 4 pad and associating it with faces in the image, the game can identify which player face is connected to which game avatar. By using facial recognition the game can associate a face with a PSN profile.

PS4 Blu-ray drive

Not only will the PS4's 64-bit x86 architecture and 8GB of GDDR5 memory blow its predecessor out of the water, its Blu-ray drive will be three times faster.
"If you're coming from the PS3 you're probably quite used to the headache of having to split memory arhchitecture, you can't quite use all of it, the speeds are really wacky on some of it - we don't have that with PS4," said Norden.
He added that this would offer developers "crazy high bandwidth".

Synergy with PlayStation Vita

Sony has revealed that the PS4 will launch with the ability to stream games directly to your PS Vita. In exactly the same way as the Wii U allows you to switch off your TV and continue playing on the tablet controller, the PS4 will wirelessly send your games to the Vita.
There will be similar synergy between "all Sony devices" which means Xperia handsets and tablets, Bravia TVs and BD players.
Sony hinted that there will be more announcements in this area, too. We think the obvious next reveal in this area is the ability to play PS4 games on your Vita from any location using a wireless connection.

PS4 Instant On

The PS4 will be one nippy device if Sony is to be believed. It will have an instant on/off feature allowing your to shut down during a game and then boot up from scratch in seconds and resume where you left off. The days of waiting 60 seconds as your console loads up are about to end.
What's more, Chris Norden has stressed that Sony has three tenets of PS4 design: simple, social and immediate. Gamers will be able to start playing titles before they've even finished downloading.
And with one button sharing, Norden says the goal is to make it so simple users will "do it without thinking about it."

PS4 launch titles

A number of games have been revealed for the PS4. They Are: Deep Down (Capcom), Destiny (Bungie), Diablo III (Blizzard), Driveclub (Evolution Studios), Final Fantasy (Square Enix), Infamous: Second Son (Sucker Punch), Killzone: Shadow Fall (Guerilla Games), Knack (Sony), The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (CD Projekt RED), Watch Dogs (Ubisoft).

Apple iOS 7 | Review

Hello Friends,

It has been a very long time that we geeks have been dying for a new look for iOS and finally in 2013 it took place. With iOS 7, it did. Apple's crisp, newly announced OS update gives the mobile operating system a radical new look and some first-for-Apple features for iPhone and iPad fans, like quick-access system controls, automatic app updates, and Apple's AirDrop file-sharing system. While there are a few notable new features in iOS 7, the new interface is by far the platform's deepest felt and most profoundly changed of the entire batch. Apple's other features are relatively uninspiring and do little to challenge competitors.

Design

Gone are the skeuomorphic interface elements that make icons look slightly bubbly, replaced by flat graphics that take on a more elegant look than earlier versions. When you move the phone or tablet, Apple promises a 3D effect that makes your wallpaper appear some distance behind the icons. Circles enter the design language, along with visuals that look nearly transparent, like a pane of glass. See what we mean in the slideshow above. The most important part of any deep design work is that it feels smooth and connected from screen to screen. We had a chance to sit down with some of the folks from Apple after the keynote and check out iOS 7 for ourselves.

The overall look is completely different across the board, from the apps we saw in the keynote to more-minor interface elements such as animated transitions when opening and closing apps. The important thing to note here is that even though it looks completely different, it's still easy to pick up and use right away because the core functionality is largely the same. In other words, browsing in Safari is as easy as ever, but there are now extra tools on hand for sharing via AirDrop, and a smooth tab-browsing interface.

Control Center and Notifications

One of the few actually new features to come to iOS is the Control Center, which finally (finally!) puts your most-used settings front and center, and is available from any screen. In iOS 7, you can swipe up from the bottom of the display to bring up quick-access tools, like a Wi-Fi meter, brightness, Airplane mode, music controls, and more.Control Center also integrates a small flashlight tool, signaling the death of so many third-party flashlight apps.In the Notifications pull-down menu, three tabs show you all your alerts, the calls and messages you've missed, and a new "today" pane that tracks your goings-on. It's a small but useful expansion of the current notifications pull-down.

Safari browser

In addition to iOS 7's Safari overhaul, the biggest change to the browser is a unified search and URL field. The fact that Apple, in its pigheadedness, kept the two separate for some time was a usability thorn in our side. Hence, the grossly outdated update that combines them into one is both gratifying and enraging, since it was such a small tweak that every other mobile OS has been taking advantage of for years. There's more flexibility with browser tabs as well. They now preview as vertically scrolling rectangular cards and look similar to what we've seen on some Android phones. You're no longer limited to eight, and you swipe them away in a gesture, just as with Android.

Navigation bars also disappear until you need them, a feature we've seen in many browsers before, and swiping left or right takes you back or forward a page, which we do find really useful -- until that moment you accidentally swipe away from the window you wanted to be on. To note a few other additions: a new filter sorts out links from people you follow on Twitter, and makes it easy to retweet them. You can now scroll from one story in your reading list right to the next.

AirDrop

AirDrop works by creating local ad-hoc networks among nearby users. So if you want to share a photo, you'll hit the share button, and automatically see others around you who are also on iOS 7. From their you just tap a friend's picture and iOS 7 uses Wi-fi and Bluetooth to send your photo (and the recipient can accept or decline). It also offers the option to make yourself invisible to nearby iOS 7 users from the Control Center.

Camera and Photos apps

Apple did a lot of work reorganizing both the camera app and how images live in the photo app. CNET camera editor Joshua Goldman goes into detail here, but we'll also give you the gist.

The camera app surfaces all your shooting modes so you can tap them to frame your shot, such as still, panorama, video, and a square, Instagram-like configuration. Another button will let you apply filters to the still or square shots. On the Camera Roll side, Apple drops the endless list of photos that you may or may not break out into albums. With iOS 7, Apple treats photos as moments in time organized around geotagged locations, not just chronology. This takes a cue from Apple's desktop iPhoto counterpart. One crowd-pleasing party trick is to zoom out and see all your photos from year to year. Sliding your finger along photos the size of confetti brings on a cool, scrubbing effect. It was definitely fun to use in our meeting with Apple, but we're not sure if Apple's photo vision aligns with our own when it comes to finding, storing, and sorting pics.

iTunes Radio

Gunning for Pandora, Google Music, Spotify, Slacker Radio, and pretty much any other music service, Apple's new iTunes Radio expands the pre-existing iTunes with familiar features that include radio stations you can build around a favorite artist, and featured stations. Of course, iTunes Radio will be tied to your Apple ID, so you can use it wherever you have iTunes installed. It's free and will be ad-free for iTunes Match users.We're happy to see Apple join the century, but there's not much new in terms of capabilities here that no one else is doing. Stay tuned for a deeper dive.

Siri

Apple's favorite digital voice assistant gains some more personality in this latest revamp. In fact, "she" has a brand-new voice; two, if you count the male version you can ask to talk to you instead. Though we have played with the new iOS, the male voice was not included in the beta release, so we'll have to reserve judgement.

A new soundwave animation appears at the bottom of the screen when you speak, and Siri's results come up in full screen, not just a tiny card. We did notice that Siri still takes some time to respond search queries, so Google Search still holds the speed record for voice searches. We also like what we heard in the keynote that Apple will be adding "high-quality" for non-English languages over time, including French and German.

By far the most substantial addition, and one that's truly useful, is that iOS 7's Siri can trigger actions on your phone's system settings, like play a past voice mail, turn on Bluetooth, and increase the brightness settings. Many voice assistants can't do this, so it's nice that Apple has increased Siri's capabilities this way -- though it isn't clear how deep into the controls your voice can go. You can also ask Siri to search Wikipedia and Twitter.

FaceTime audio

The days of abandoning FaceTime every time you want to make a straight audio (rather than video) call from your iOS device are coming to a close. Apple announced that high-quality calls over Wi-Fi will complement video calls for those who would rather talk while on the move.

Automatic updates

A tiny, but enormously time-saving addition, the App Store gets automatic app updates in the new OS. This new feature was bittersweet because while we don't like constantly looking at the updates notification, there are some apps that we want to see the new features before we update. Apple assured us in our meeting that auto updates can be turned off in the settings.

Multitasking

Apple may sneer at Microsoft, but it certainly likes its rival's aesthetics when it comes to multitasking. Now, double-tapping the home screen brings up not just tiny thumbnail icons of your open apps, but also a tall preview (like a mini screenshot) of what you're looking at. Borrowing from Android's recent app list, swiping away a preview closes the app.

Availability

Bad news if you're itching to try out iOS 7 for yourself, because you're just going to have to wait unless you're a registered app developer. The full public release comes to your iPhone and iPad this fall (with no precise date). As usual, registered iPhone developers get a crack at the new iOS 7 beta beginning today, but iPad developers will need to cool their heels for a few weeks.

Verdict

This is the first major redesign of the iOS since the iPhone's first release in 2007, signaling a shift to a more modern look that still stays true to Apple's sharp, clean, almost cutting aesthetic. We like the daring steps forward so far, but a contingent of die-hards will buck at the unfamiliar. Apple adds visual and usability elements all its own, but also continues to borrow (as all the mobile platform-makers do) from some rivals in drips and drabs. We see this sprinkled throughout the OS in the quick-access settings, treatment of browser tabs, and adoption of some circular design elements. iOS 7 brings huge changes in the visual department, which is an important part of the way you relate with your tablet or phone. Yet the really substantial, game-changing new features are few and far between.

Apple has a history of keeping its most pulse-quickening news for its next iPhone and iPad announcements. For that, we will have to wait until this fall.
