Firefox Made Safer with 'Click to Play'

What happened?

Mozilla said that version 14 of Firefox, due in July, will not allow plug-ins such as Flash, PDFs and Java to play without asking you first, in a bid to boost security. Instead of playing videos, for example, Firefox will display an icon telling you to 'click here to activate plugin'.

How will it affect you?

When you visit a page with a Flash-based video, such as YouTube, the video won't immediately start to play; you'll have to click the icon to get it started. The system will be familiar to anyone using Firefox extensions such as NoScript, which prevents some ads and other content displaying. If that sounds terribly inconvenient, don't worry; when you visit a site frequently, you can change the settings to let content play and appear automatically.

Media Center will be Paid-For Add-On in Windows 8

What happened?

Microsoft has said that Media Center won't be built into Windows 8 for free. Instead, it will be available as a paid-for, add-on software pack. Prices haven't yet been announced, but Microsoft said it would be a "marginal" cost.

However, Windows 8 will have video and music-playing apps built into its new Metro interface, so anyone looking to play tracks or watch downloaded video won't need any additional software.

British MP Calls for Online Porn Ban

Armed with a report from 17 MPs from all three main parties, Conservative MP Claire Perry has revived calls to block pornography from the UK web in order to prevent children seeing adult content.

Last year, the government worked with ISPs and others in the web industry to create a system where new broadband customers would be offered free parental-control filtering software, and given advice on how to set it up. Perry has now said that the system - dubbed 'active choice'- isn't being implemented quickly enough and doesn't go far enough, because parental-control software doesn't protect all devices, just the PC it's installed on.

Airbeam

Airbeam is a free iPhone and iPad application which can be used for surveillance. It is very easy to setup if you have at least two iOS devices. You install this apps in both devices and connect it to your Home Wi-Fi network. One of the device (iPhone) can be set as a monitor and the other device (ex: iPad) will enable you to view what the camera sees at any point of time. Airbeam will work with any iP enabled camera’s too. Invest on a Linksys WV54VCA IP camera which can be used to monitor any room or door entrance and it can be easily connected and control from Airbeam. Using 3G network you can monitor from anywhere too. You can use the same camera for an elaborated surveillance system described in the last column using Synology serve.

Broadband Advertising Rules Come into Force

What happened?

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has forced ISPs to only advertise speeds that at least 10 per cent of their customers can actually achieve. According to Ofcom figures, that would mean most services previously advertised as "up to" 20 or 24Mbps should actually be advertised as 14Mbps.

While some companies have lowered their advertised speeds - BT now claims a 16Mbps connect ion - many have removed all mention of speed from adverts, instead telling potential customers to use t heir broadband speed checkers to find out exactly what they can get.
