Windows Worries

Denis Dubie of ComputerWorld UK, in his blog reveals the survey figures of rejection of the new Redmond Obese-OS( that's what I'm gonna call it, as we call Ubuntu 7.10 -Gutsy Gibbon),Windows Vista. The survey was conducted by Forrester.Here are some of the key results of the survey.

As expected, Windows XP remains one of the biggest obstacles to the acceptance of the Vista.
Out of 600 US and European companies ,employing a minimum of 1000 employees each, which participated in the survey, 84 % of their PCs were running on Windows XP.

The survey also said:

.....Ninety percent of 961 IT professionals surveyed said they have concerns about migrating to Vista and more than half said they have no plans to deploy Vista.

5 Rumors for the Black Friday

Ok! So the Black Friday is almost here and well, its time for people to queue up early in the morning in front of their favorite gizmo store. So, how about cooking up some rumors for this Black Friday instead of some Turkey eh!
So here I go!

1:Facebook joins Opensocial, and well Google links up Gmail user IDs to it. Those who already are logging in Facebook via Gmail email IDs, get an invite to a Gmail/Google Facebook exclusive group/app.

2:iPhone launches back the 4 GB model. Sold for 250$. Wait! I've got a better one. Steve shows Woz a big hug, and tells him that iPhone is going the Open way. As in, no more lock! Free,Free,Free!!!!!!! So all those minds occupied by keywords like unbricking, jailbreak et al, can just sit down, stretch their legs and eat Turkey.

3:Glenn Wolsey admits that he was the one who hacked his own site. ie. Glenn Wolsey is malcor.

4: eBay sells Skype to Yahoo!

5:Digg finally unbanns me. How I miss digging!!

Gmail Hack Post: Search by Language

I found this on a blog on zdnet and well, I'll save the surprise for the end. Apparently Gmail allows to search by language. Yes. Here's the trick how. Search the following in the search bar-
“language:”.e.g. If you want to search for German, you can type in "language:german" minus the quotes.

Now for the surprise! English isn't supported yet by Gmail. ROTFL.
This simple search in Gmail shows you messages it believes is written in German or Spanish whatever.

What is that fuss about Amazon's Kindle?

Just hit Techmeme now(ie 11/20/2007, 1020 hrs IST) and what you'll find is that the first half of page is occupied by Amazon's new paid ebook reader named as Kindle.More on the name a bit later. So what is so revolutionary about this new gadget kid on the block? It reads ebooks, rss feeds,blogs, e-magazines, enables you to download all of 'em in less than a minute without any internet, wi-fi, or PC connection by using a wireless network called Amazon Whispernet which is something on the lines of a cellular phone network service,which means this is available only in the US(but of course). Display as bright and crisp as paper, ie is clearly viewable even in strong sunlight unlike LCD displays in all portable handheld devices. No monthly bills, only 9.99$ per book download from a library of 90,000 strong Amazon Library. Now more of the official specs is available in the press release.Costs a bummer at 399$ for just an ebook reader!

Now what they didn't tell you at the release specs.

PDF is not supported whatsoever, even via conversion. I heard someone laughing.
Blog Subscriptions cost 2$ a month with a 14 day trial. Not all blogs, only from a selection of 308 titles.
GIF,JPEGs are supported. So, all you manga addicts in the US can dig this.

What I have to say? Why would someone pay 399$ for an e-book reader for Pete's sake, pay another 5$ to 15$ for additional subscriptions, carry yet another gadget weighing 10.3 ounces which fills both of your palms, and which is WHITE?
Ok, btw, Didn't Steve's handheld cost 399$ too? Hmm, it read PDF if I can remember. Had an 8GB hard drive, played Mp3s,MP4 video,Coverflow, 2mp camera, had a touchscreen, and oh, it made calls too. What was that called again?

After the disastrous performance at my attempt to become a manager,ie.CAT 2007 ,I am reminded of only one song and ie. ..But life still goes on,...I can't get used to living without living without...Living without you by my side.
Anyway, time to get back to Technology. God, Internet has been buzzing with all crazy news from all ends. Facebook entering China , Amazon with a paid "blog reader?",Google Magazine, Mininova hitting the 1 millionth torrent upload, 17 newspapers join Yahoo.....phew!!! Lemme take a breather! Shall be back with the normal updates soon,very soon. I still need some time for myself to get back to normal as I'm recovering from the trauma of Nov 18th, also known in India as CAT 2007. I promise, Techkeyla will be back in a blink.

Fanboys Combat: Glenn Wolsey suffers being hacked

In the ultimate showdown between the Apple Fanboys and PC Fanboys, this is what happened to one of the most visited Apple weblogs. Glenn Wolsey,a 15 year old prodigy from New Zealand , whose blog glennwolsey.com is thronged by millions of Apple addicts and even those who aren't, everyday, has been hacked by someone called malcor. The site shows the following screen now.

As expected, when many fans and avid readers of the blog(which includes me as well) are disappointed, there are also thousands who are pretty excited about the whole event. Read the comments on Malco's blogs here and find out.Just be prepared to read a lot of geeky foul language from anonymous techies from both ends(Mac as well as PC ie).

UPDATE: The blog now shows a blank white page, and well as the image read, the blog had been hacked for 24 hours. So we can expect it to get back online quite soon!

What could possibly be similar, or remotely common between Prison Break and the wild world of Blogging, what we know as the Blogosphere? Apparently, there is a full page theory stating things which do draw parallels between the two, and not only that. The main protagonist ,Michael Scoffield (I'm a huge fan of Prison Break) has been even compared to have traits which should be there in a blogger who wants to be successful. Youtube Hack

Everyone must have heard about the recent announcement from the guys at Youtube about rolling out the next gen of Youtube in 3 months, which would allow better and higher resolution of videos, probably a longer duration limit of videos and better sound etc. What Youtube does when we upload a File already in a standard resolution,say 640X480 or upwards, is tone it down to normal 4:3 TV scale 320X240,convert it online to FLV which means compressed size at the cost of picture quality. Well, yes of course, video streaming is faster at this rate. But for broadband users, Youtube is just meh!All that is gonna change in 3 months from now. But this post which I found in a forum( forum.videohelp.com, Read the article here) gives a step-by-step guide of retaining video clarity, and hacking the duration limit etc on the current Youtube. The procedure is a bit too long, and too intriguing for me, but for all the people who really want to dig in to upload your really long webisodes,podcasts,whatever, try it out.

I happened to stumble upon this article at Sphinn(yeah! the blue button you see below).It is titled "Say Goodbye to Google". I even read a similar forum discussion here.It is true that Google, in its pursuit for organizing the entire online information has started to appear to some,as a Giant who wants control over all. We cannot deny that Search today is synonymous to Google,or vice versa. Gmail has become one of the most widely used Mail services, setting trends with security,spam filter, large sized inboxes and attachments sizes larger than most free mail inbox sizes. Firefox is the pioneer of the Open Source browser league and well, I, being in India, am an Orkut addict. And I just skipped some other major Google products and their features, coz that would take up the entire page. Apparently, the entire scope of Google seems to upset a few people(a few, because they are only a few, again,I assume). Here are some questions these so-called Anti-Google people have to ask.

Is Google trying to out perform Microsoft in manopolizing the Internet?
All the shorcuts applications in the tool bar are Google, Google, and more Google.

They even suggest substitutes to the Google products.What can I say? I blog on Blogger, use Google Adsense, Google Blogsearch, Google Search, on a Firefox Browser and Google is one of the top Labels on my blog. So, praise the Big G.

Wiki vs Google vs Facebook

I know the "vs." title is just getting on too much. But I just can't help it. Its the Tech News section across the Web which is splashing such news throughout. In one of the most loud announcements from Wiki head honcho,Jimmy Wales, it was revealed that Wiki is stepping into the social networking arena. Well, not explicitly mentioned. This is what happened. Jimmy Wales calls this new project, Wikia, which is a new twist in the search tale. Incidentally the page shown resembles a Facebook profile.( Read the full story here).So search meets Social Networking finally? I won't indulge in speculating on this. More in this article are some startling trivia about Wikipedia. Interestingly, it has been termed as Google's worst Nightmare. I shall call it Wiki vs Google vs Facebook.

CIO did an interesting article enlisting the 5 Favorite Widgets for Business users on Facebook. Now I am not that,right! (Well, I do dream of becoming one, one day, but that's a different story). So here I am, writing down my own 5 favorite Facebook Widgets, not necessarily in any order.

1: Blog Friends
It is the best way to make my contacts and friends know of my latest posts. Only limitations is for a blogger like me who maintains 4 different blogs,there is no option but to just stick to your three favorite ones.Hmm! Similar widgets also existing on my Facebook profile are: Flog Blog and Stumble Upon.

2:Pirates vs.Ninja
I love Naruto and am a big big fan of the Jap-Anime league of which I worship Uzumaki Naruto.
So for a change , when I get to be one, and kick the buttocks of the Jack Sparrows and Captain Hooks , I love it. It hurts when you lose but! Similar widgets: Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies et al.

3:Flickr
Need I say more.

4:iLike
For a music buff like me , this is the best way to discover the varied musical tastes of the online community on Facebook. Just love it. Not so similar widget would be Flixster which is a movie comparison,quizzing widget. I love it too, given the movie addict that I am,

5:Addicted to:
There are a zillion of Addicted to Apps, and the one that has captured me the most is the Addicted to Friends app. I have scored 8070 in the trivia quiz and am ranked a Fiend. (Collars UP!)
Also featuring other shows like Sex and the City, LOST,How I Met your Mother, CSI,24,The Office etc etc etc.

People who have been blogging now for the last two years or more must be quite aware of the Technorati powered Widget which quantifies the financial worth of one's blog. The Dane Carlson project page is linked here.
There is another website with a similar purpose called Website Value Calculator. The startling results are about to follow. This blog of mine, ie Techkeyla has got so far a traffic of 12,000 visitors in the last 40 days or so since its genesis. Its Alexa rating is in the range of 3 million, and I wouldn't mention the Google Page Rank. Both the value calculators are based on Alexa rating, and Google Page ranking. However, they have different results to show.
First: Dane Carlson's Blog Worth Calculator.
For Techkeyla the worth is: 2,258.16$

My blog is worth $2,258.16.
How much is your blog worth?

According to Website Value Calculator however, it is a mere 208$.

My site is worth $208.
How much is yours worth?

BTW, for my other two, not-so-popular blogs, Tathastu and Magnumopus, the results are more amusing than the dollars they boast of!!!
Dane Carlson gives Tathastu a worth of $3,951.78, and well, Website Value gives it, wait for it, a jaw dropping $77,781,960 . Ahem! I just choked. The bug here is the Alexa ranking. Tathastu has an Alexa ranking of 12 and a Google Page ranking of 3. How the F? I donno. Apparently, I can earn $108,750/Link/Month through Text Link Ads and $1,522,499.9958/Month through creative product placements.That's what Website Value says.LOL.

Don't even get me started on Magnumopus.
Dane Carlson gives it: $3,951.78 again, and Website Value gives a score of :$77,783,136 . Hmm! with such killer earning blogs, should I just throw the "I resign " letter on the face of my Manager today? LOL. Foolish thought!!! Get real Sujoy.

Ubuntu vs Leopard vs Vista

This post is courtesy Google Trends. I just love it. This isn't a sudden awakening to the Google tool that has been out for long. But yeah, the implementation just impressed me absolutely. We have all been subjected to the intense drama of the face-off among the three big-wigs in the OS world. For all the morons who are still wondering, I'm talking about Ubuntu's Gutsy-Gibbon, Apple's Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, and Windows' successor of XP,Vista. Now, people may argue that the Leopard has been sucking all the eyeballs, internet spaces on blogs, forum discussions and well search engine keyowrds as well. But the Google Trends comparison actually gives a startling eye-opener. Have a look at the graph below. The figures are of the last month,ie Oct-15th to Nov 15th 2007.(The figures before that aren't much different either.)

A region wise ,city wise, and a language wise comparison of the search trends.

The region-wise comparison strengthens the point here . That people across the globe, irrespective of the language,region or city they live in, have been searching more on the Net(read Google) about Vista than any of the other two rivals. Like it, or hate it, you just can't ignore it.

Gmail 2.0 Features

Seems my speculations are pretty much falling into the right places.I had expressed my desires from the all new Version of the Gmail in my previous post. And this is what it might turn out to be actually featuring in the near feature( Source:Noheat.com).
More than just the updated IMAP support and a mint-fresh contact layout, as I had wished for, HTML Signatures are actually getting real on the next Gmail rollout. Read the whole article here.
Is Folders on the way too? The article also discloses other yet-to-be-announced features like Meebo Integration, Toolbar addition etc.Seems someone has been reading Techkeyla eh! LOL!

My Email Signature

Umm, Gmail IMAP is out. And this gives me more functionality and enough reasons to justify myself to use a Mail Client for my personal mail(I use Lotus Notes for my Office Mail). I am quite lost choosing the right option, on one hand we have the Microsoft Outlook Express (which I'd have to install as yet), and on the other hand is the Firefox buddy-Thunderbird. Now, it will take some more time for me to come to the decision( essentially which takes around 4 hours of intense meditation in an ambience filled with incense and Nirvana,the band, and of course a bit of vodka does act as a catalyst to the process, but minus the MJ,as in G, as in pot) of choosing the right mail client for now. But, this is what I have planned for myself what my mail signature would look like.

Flock 1.0 other features

I hadn't quite checked out the other features for the Flock 1.0 since my last time. I just had checked the Facebook Peoples functionality which I had written about in my earlier post. Well, the primary obstacle is that I haven't been able to import my bookmarks and RSS feeds from my Firefox to the Flock. Bad yeah! But nonetheless, as the name suggests, Flock is promising in terms of social networking. Take this for instance. The Flickr page gives you a slidebar a.k.a MediaBar ahead, which enables you to surf through the media in your album. Other sites included are Youtube,Ma.gnolia,Twitter, delicious,Photobucket et al. The blog poster isn't much different from Firefox's Scribefire Addon ,only difference being, it opoens in a separate pop-up box, rather than the half-screen Scribefire (which is pretty annoying btw). My points this time for the MediaBar! Shall explore the possibilities of the Flock 1.0 some more and shall update ya soon!

Everything is BIG and in your face when it comes to the Big G. When we were all busy speculating about the new GPhone, they quietly announced in their own way, the new OpenSource Mobile OS,Android. And not only that, the SDK is up for grabs. So how is it different? The developers community is up to make it different than any other Mobile OS so far. And Google is leaving no stones unturned in the process. Enter, the 10 Million $ Android Developer's challenge[ Official Page Here]. So if you are one of those who is passionate about embedded devices and you know your Mobile Java well, next March, things could really turn Green.All the best Devs. We all know, it's gonna be the Win for us consumers at the EOD.

Inbox 2.0 from Yahoo

Just when we thought Yahoo has lost the game to the other big newsmakers of the techno-world, they have sprung back into action. And with this action, is it time now to bid goodbye to Yahoo 360, iGoogle, and all the other personal/social webpage profiles. We all have a habit of speculating too early, don't we? But for now, let's just break the ice of what's Yahoo upto! The future of Inbox is reportedly here! Your friendly inbox won't be dull no more. Read this article at NYTimes by Saul Hansell for the details. It is a detailed report on what is termed as the next gen of the Inbox whose primary function was to deliver your emails from your contacts and friends. The next gen would be the revamping of the Inbox to directly compete or join hands with start pages and Social Networks. Interesting point here is the fact that how Social Networks, on joining, prompt you to send invites for joining that particular social network via your contacts in your Mail. Better late than never, Yahoo and perhaps even Google, realised that they already have that as providers of the mail service. So, there we go. Inbox 2.0! Can't wait to see what it has to offer beyond what I can think right now! Shall be right back with the speculations!

Protest for Nandigram
