The cat is finally out of the bag!

Search giant Google unveiled its Google Nexus 7 tablet PC on the very first day of Google I/O at San Francisco on June 27.

Built by Taiwan-based Asus and designed by Google, the 7-inch, $199 (approximately Rs 11,000) tablet comes loaded with top-class features.

For starters, the Nexus 7 features 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU with a 12-core GPU, that the company claims, 'delivers rich and immersive graphics'.

What's more the Nexus 7 will be the first tablet in the world to showcase the latest Android OS: Jelly Bean. This is likely to make the tab 'more intutive and faster'.

While the Nexus 7 is loaded with a heavy-duty processor, other specs include 1 GB RAM, accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, 802.11a/b/g/n that is Wi-Fi compatible and a 1.2 MP front camera.

Sadly, the Nexus 7 disappoints as it does not come with a rear camera. One hopes Google offers a rear camera in its next iteration and make it a complete package to take on the might of the iPads, Galaxy tabs, Kindle Fires and Nooks.

The 7-inch in-plane switching screen boasts of '1280-by-800 high-resolution display protected by scratch resistant Corning glass', according to the company web site.

The Nexus 7 seems to have been optimised to take maximum juice out of Google Play -- Google's online store -- that offers ebooks, movies, 600,000 games and apps, magazines and music. Interestingly, all those who buy the Nexus 7 from Google Play will be offered a $25 credit to buy from the store.

Initially, though, the tablet will be available only in the US, Canada, Australia and UK where the Nexus 7 will be delivered by mid-July.

Interestingly, on popular demand, the Nexus 7 comes pre-loaded with Google Chrome making surfing the Internet simpler and speedier.

ndia has unveiled a new version of what it says is the "world's cheapest tablet computer" - the Aakash 2.

The device, primarily for students, is to be sold for 2,263 rupees ($40; £26). It has a faster processor, longer battery life and more programming capability than an earlier version.

The government believes that low-cost tablets can help revolutionise internet access across India.

But distribution has been an issue, with few schools receiving the tablets.

A right to information request filed by Indian media blog Medianama showed that only 572 of the first devices have been distributed, reaching fewer than 20 colleges.

"There was some delay in taking the project forward for reasons I don't want to go into," Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal told a group of teachers and students who had gathered to see the Aakash 2.

The Aakash 2 sample devices are now being tested, with manufacturing projected to start by July or August.

UK-based company Datawind, which faced criticism over delivery of the Aakash 1 in 2011, will manufacture the Aakash 2.

Bombay IIT, an engineering institution, aims to distribute 100,000 tablets to engineering colleges by the end of the year. It says it will use software to track the devices.
'Fully-fledged computer'

Like its predecessor, the Aakash 2 allows users to watch online tutorials and videos, browse the internet and play games.

"It's a fully-fledged computer, not just an access device," said Prof DB Phatak from Bombay IIT. "The applications and the content on Aakash 2 are most important, not just the device."

The new version of the Aakash tablet has an 800Mhz processing speed, a three-hour battery life and operates on the latest Android software.

It also has an SD card slot, a USB port and works over wi-fi. It does not have 3G capability, however, so users need access to a good internet connection.

According to sources, Datawind has received pre-booking orders for 3 million units of Ubislate 7+, the tablet's commercial name.

Out of these 3 million, around 2 per cent has paid full value for priority delivery, Datawind CEO Tuli told Business Today.

At Rs 3,000 per tablet, a little back-of-the-envelope calculation will tell us that Tuli already has around Rs 18 crore-Rs 20 crore in his pocket. Many of the smaller Indian domestic mobile phone makers catering to regional markets are yet to cross this mark.

Tuli claims he is getting daily fresh orders of 8,000 to 10,000 pieces. While there is plenty of demand, delivery may not be able to meet the schedules. Tuli said he's even considering alternative manufacturing avenues, but DataWind may have trouble meeting demand. "We expect to get 3 lakh to 4 lakh tablets a month and still a lot of people will be unhappy that devices are not coming," says Tuli.

Ubislate 7+ & Ubislate 7c Launched

Amidst controveries, tech company Datawind launched Ubislate tablets in India priced at Rs 2,999 and Rs 4,000, respectively for resistive and capacitive screen versions.

Government's Aakash II tablets, expected to be launched this year will carry the same configuration as Ubislate tablets, i.e, a 800 MHz Cortex A8 processors on Android 2.3 platform.

"We have tied up with distributors across India. The tablets will be available by May-end only after we have fulfilled the existing orders," said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind.

For internet access, Datawind has tied up with Aircel, which will offer an unlimited internet plan at Rs 98 per month on 2G/GPRS for the Ubislate tablets.

The Ubislate7c (capacitive touch) tablets priced at Rs 4000 will carry an internal flash memory of 4GB. The resistive versions will carry internal memory of 2GB and will be priced at Rs 3000.

The tablets will carry one standard USB port. "Our customers who made pre-payments for earlier version of the tablet will get the upgraded version," Tuli added. He said that a break up with Quad has jeopardised the delivery schedule for the tablets, and he is looking for more suppliers.

For manufacturing the tablets in India, Datawind has tied up with Hyderbad based VMCSystems after a break-up with Quad.

Akash 2 aka Ubislate new version launch on April 26

Amidst lots of negative publicity (its issues with IIT Rajasthan, the Indian government and Quad Electronics), Datawind finally announced the much awaited commercial launch date of UbiSlate Tablets and its support eco-system. The upgraded version of the much touted low cost Tablet Aakash is to be launched on April 26, around three months behind schedule (earlier, it was supposed to be launched in the last week of January. More on that here.

These Tablets received unprecedented response on pre-order which started in December 2011. According to the company, individual pre-booked orders have exceeded 3 million mark and it is increasing by 10,000 everyday and factoring in the corporate/institutional orders it has surpassed the 4 million mark.

Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO and co-founder of Datawind said, “True, there have been lot of delays, we could not live up to the expectations of our customers and was unable to meet our deadlines. Responding to a question on the Aakash tablet, in the Lok Sabha, HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal informed that IIT Rajasthan had selected Datawind through an open tender and had placed an order for supplying 1,00,000 tablets for the purpose of testing. Of the 6440, tablets supplied to it, IIT Rajasthan, so far, has conditionally accepted 650 tablets and rejected rest of the lots as the number of defective tablets in those lots exceeded the stipulated 5% of devices. The government has distributed 366 tablets, so far.

This is a shocking news, this initial LOT was distributed on 5th october on the launch of Aakash Tablet.
According to our sources DataWind gets 44,000 calls everyday, and thousands of people are placing orders everyday. But There has been no distribution at all.

Aakash 2 Delayed by 2 Weeks, Delivery by end of April

Datawind, the maker of the world's cheapest tablet Aakash has said that it is running two weeks behind schedule in deliveries for retail sales of its tablets, due to a break up of its relationship with Hyderbad based vendor Quad Electronics.

Datawind ended its relationship with Quad in January. In a statement, chief executive Suneet Singh Tuli said that Electronics breached Datawind's intellectual property rights.

"Quad circumvented our relationship with IIT-Rajasthan, signed a direct memorandum of understanding with them and then sold off its inventory in the open market," Tuli said.

People close to the development said that Datawind is evaluating new manufacturing partners in Noida and Cochin but nothing has been finalised yet.

Datawind had made a commitment to deliver the devices by end of March. "We started taking pre-payments at the end of January, offering delivery in 8 weeks starting end of March - we're about two weeks late from that date," Tuli said. "We expect to catch up to our promised delivery schedule by end of April." he adds.

Founded by Raminder Soin, former managing partner of Tata Cellular, Quad is a product lifecycle management company that also undertakes electronics manufacturing for original equipment makers. For Aakash project, Quad was responsible for making the touchscreen panels for the Android tablets. The touch panels were later claimed to be faulty, in a communication between IIT Rajasthan and Datawind, a copy of the letter is with ET. Quad's Soin did not reply to a questionnaire sent by ET.

The controversy over the Indian government’s $45 tablet, Aakash, has taken a fresh twist, with a scrap breaking out between the manufacturer, Canada’s DataWind Ltd, and its erstwhile assembly partner, Hyderabad’s Quad Electronics Solutions Pvt. Ltd.

Meanwhile, thousands of people who have booked the tablet are bearing the brunt of the fight. Bookings for an upgraded version of Aakash, the UbiSlate 7+, opened late last year, but deliveries are yet to start. Many of those who have booked the tablet have paid an advance.

The fight between the two former partners, who have terminated their relationship and claim to have served legal notices to each other, is the latest chapter in the troubled saga of the government’s ambitious effort to bridge the digital divide with a low-cost product. The government was expected to buy 100,000 Aakash tablets, but stopped after the initial lot when serious quality problems surfaced. The number of tablets bought by the government in the initial lot isn’t known. The company, however, sold around 10,000 of the tablets (branded UbiSlate for the retail market) online for around Rs.2,500 each before retiring, perhaps in the wake of the controversy, the first version of the tablet, and promising the launch of an upgrade, UbiSlate 7+. Communications and information technology minister Kapil Sibal recently said on the sidelines of an education conclave in Kolkata that the process will start again in May.

While Quad claims DataWind hasn’t paid it, the Canadian company alleges that its former partner infringed its intellectual property rights and tried to sell directly to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Rajasthan, the government-run technology school vested with the responsibility of procuring the tablets.

“They did not pay us and we have already served them a legal notice,” said a Quad executive, who did not want to be identified. He added that the company’s lawyers are studying further options.

Suneet Singh Tuli, chief executive of DataWind, refuted this claim in an email to Mint. “DataWind’s relationship with Quad ended because Quad circumvented DataWind’s relationship with IIT-Rajasthan and signed a separate MoU (memorandum of understanding) directly with IIT-Rajasthan. The two of them collaborated to try and create an Aakash-2 competitor, but were unsuccessful.” He added that the company had been paid for most of the units it had assembled, barring 600 for which IIT- Rajasthan is yet to pay.

The Quad executive said his company assembled 20,000 tablets, but stopped delivery after 10,000. “They (DataWind) couldn’t work with the government, did not respect our contract, and are not even standing by their promises to the consumers,” he said.

Tuli didn’t disclose either the number of people who have booked the tablet or those who have paid an advance. “We will provide an update on the number of pre-bookings, units delivered and schedule to clear the backlog at our launch event, planned for the third week of this month,” he said in his mail. In an earlier interaction, on 6 March, he had said the company had received three million bookings for Ubislate 7+ and hoped to launch its new tablet in a few weeks.

Tuli said in his mail that the company had appointed new partners to assemble the tablet, but didn’t identify them.

New Delhi-based Panchanan Bisoi, though, is still waiting. He ordered a Ubislate 7+ online for Rs.2,999 and paid the entire amount in February. He has since been corresponding with the company, but said he hasn’t heard back from it. “The toll-free number doesn’t work and emails are not being replied to. It may turn out to be a failed project,” he said.

Tuli ascribed the delay to the time it took to find a partner. “We do understand the concern customers have because of delays, but we expect to have caught up on deliveries for pre-paid customers shortly, and are actively offering full refunds to anybody that does not wish to wait any longer. The very large majority of customers are standing by us, and new pre-bookings keep flowing in at a very strong pace,” he wrote in his mail.

He also said that anyone who had paid in advance heard back from the company in 48 hours and was given an email address and phone number to call “instead of the toll-free number”.

Online consumer forums don’t bear that out. A consumer named Sandhya Bhadauria said on www.grahakseva.com that she booked a tablet in December, paid the entire amount, and was promised delivery in the first week of April. She said she has been unable to reach the company since. Another, J.K. Soni, wrote in the same forum that he paid an advance for delivery of the UbiSlate 7 in February. He said the company hasn’t been responding to his emails and phone calls.

Aakash 2 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

The key update for Aakash 2 will be that the Aakash 2 will get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the operating system. That operating system update does raise an interesting issue though. Namely, the specifications for the new version of the tablet don’t meet the recommended minimum specifications for ICS. The tablet gets a single core 800 MHz processor and 256 MB of memory with 2 GB of storage space.

We already know that Aakash 1.0 had performance issues and we also know that you can not run a high performance OS on a machine which has weak hardware. To run a high performance PC you would need good RAM, and good processor. We are hugely disappointed by Indian government and IIT's who are working on Aakash 2.0. They should either downgrade the OS to Android 3.0 or should put more processing power.

HCL to bid for Akash 2 Manufacturing Tender

Computer maker HCL Infosystems today said it will participate in the tender for manufacturing Aakash 2, the enhanced version of the the world's cheapest tablet PC, only at a "feasible" price.

"Government has done a good job with Aakash as it has got a whole lot of people on tablet PCs. We would love to participate (in the tender) and we are looking at it if it is feasible".

"The tender is yet to come out with the specifications... But if it comes to prices which are not feasible, we will exit graciously," HCL Infosystems Executive VP and Head (Mobility) Gautam Advani told reporters here.

Aakash 2 Launch Date Shifted to May - Sibbal

A faster and enhanced version of low-cost tablet PC, Aakash, would be launched on trial basis in May, Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal said here today.

"The second version of Aakash will be launched some time in May," Sibal said on the sidelines of an ICC organised higher education conclave.

He said the tablet PC was being tested and based on feedback from students commercial production would be taken up.

The new tablet would have a better 3200m AH battery with a three hour battery backup, a 700 MHz Cortex A8 processor and a capacitive touch screen which would get over the earlier issues observed in the tablets, Sibal had said earlier.

The first stage of 100,000 tablets was aimed for students of higher technical educational institutions, he had said recently.
