DJI Puts Drones to the Test on the World's Highest Peak

DJI, the global leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology, today announced the successful completion of three missions on Mount Qomolangma (also known as Mount Everest), advancing breakthroughs in high-altitude delivery, mapping, and atmospheric research. Missions featured the new DJI FlyCart 100 for delivery and the new DJI Matrice 4E for mapping on the South Slope in Nepal. And DJI's first eVTOL delivery drone EV50 supported long-distance, high-altitude deliveries for atmospheric chemistry research on the North Slope in China.

These milestones build on DJI's decades-long effort to push the boundaries of drone innovation on the world's highest mountain. In 2009, DJI tested an unmanned helicopter equipped with its self-developed XP3.1 flight control system on the mountain. A year later, the DJI Ace One flight control system successfully operated above 4,700 m. In 2022, a DJI Mavic 3 reached the summit and captured the first drone footage of the peak at 8,848.86 m. Then in 2024, DJI FlyCart 30 completed the world's first drone delivery tests on the mountain from Base Camp to Camp 1 on the South Slope.

High Altitude Drone Delivery Transports 10,073 kg in Supplies and Waste

DJI FlyCart 100 is a high-capacity, heavy-lift delivery drone that can carry up to 100 kg at sea-level over longer distances while delivering improved power efficiency. In partnership with local Nepalese drone company Airlift, the tests assessed the drone's high-altitude performance, including payload capacity, transmission range, RTK positioning accuracy, signal stability, and battery endurance in sub-zero temperatures (-15° to 5°C). The payload, which included various climbing expedition gear such as oxygen tanks, ropes, ladders, and other equipment, was flown between Base Camp and Camp 1.

This year's tests demonstrated the DJI FlyCart 100's ability to carry up to 47 kg while reaching a test altitude of over 6,300 m. In total, 10,073 kg of supplies and waste were carried between Base Camp and Camp 1 – of which, 7,215 kg were climbing supplies and 2,858 kg were waste removed from the mountain. A single, one-way flight took just eight minutes to complete. Traditionally, Sherpas needed to trek six to eight hours on foot and cross the hazardous Khumbu Icefall to make the same delivery.

DJI FlyCart 100 will continue to support the Nepalese climbing community's long-term goal of transporting approximately 5,000 oxygen cylinders each climbing season between Base Camp and Camp 1. On return trips, DJI FlyCart 100 will assist in removing approximately 10,000 kg of waste from higher camps that previously could not be cleaned up. On average, each climber leaves about 8 kg of trash behind on the mountain. This aligns with Nepal's broader sustainability efforts, including the Nepal Mountain Association's "Zero Waste Initiative 2027."

Enabling High-Altitude Glacier Mapping Deployment for Mountaineering Safety

Throughout the Spring 2026 climbing season, the DJI Matrice 4E was tested in a high-altitude mountaineering environment to obtain high-resolution glacier intelligence. The compact enterprise drone with intelligent multi-sensors performed exceptionally well in the mountain's extreme conditions at an altitude of 6,450 m and temperatures below -20° C. It mapped over 3 km² of the Khumbu Icefall's core area at a centimeter-level — covering Base Camp, the icefall, and above Camp I — in just 3.5 hours, slashing typical survey time. It became a critical tool for providing real-time hazard monitoring, planning safer routes, enabling faster movement on the mountain, and improving support for rescue operations.

The compact drone's Laser Range Finder was used to make precise, real-time distance and terrain measurements. These coordinate markings, in turn, were used to help teams accurately identify and share hazard locations. For search-and-rescue operations, the drone can serve as a second pair of eyes, intelligently locating people and detecting movement against snow-covered terrain.

DJI Matrice 4E will continue to play a critical role in improving mountaineering safety, providing climbing teams with the data they need to make smarter, safer decisions in the extreme environment on the world's highest peak. "While glacier mapping and satellite monitoring have been used in different parts of the world, what we are doing in Nepal is unique because of the level of detail, operational application, and real-time safety focus for mountaineering," said Raj Bikram Maharjan, CEO at Airlift Technology. "To our knowledge, this is the first deployment of its kind in Nepal, and potentially one of the first real-world operational uses globally at this scale in a high-altitude expedition environment."

Aiding High-Altitude Scientific Research on Climate Change

In support of the scientific community, DJI tested its first eVTOL delivery drone, DJI EV50, to conduct fine-scale observations of atmospheric pollutants in the ultra-high-altitude troposphere. Over 12 days, ozone-measuring equipment from the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Peking University was transported 12 times from the mountaineering base camp in the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve. Spiral ascents and reciprocating flight patterns were performed to navigate the complex winds and harsh flying conditions. The most successful flight reached a maximum flight altitude of 8,861 m with a maximum continuous climb of 3,730 m. This operation also marked the first time the university's researchers used drones to conduct high-altitude troposphere observations for related atmospheric research.

Electra Achieves FAA Certification Milestone for EL9 Ultra Short Aircraft

Electra, the global leader in ultra-short hybrid-electric aviation, today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has closed the G-1 Issue Paper, formally establishing the certification basis for Electra's EL9 Ultra Short aircraft and advancing the company toward the next big step in type certification of the company's nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft.

Electra submitted its Part 23 type certification application in November 2025. The swift completion of the G-1 Issue Paper in just seven months reflects years of early technical engagement with the FAA and establishes an agreed regulatory foundation for several industry-first technologies, including distributed hybrid-electric propulsion, blown-lift for ultra-short takeoff and landing, and advanced fly-by-wire controls designed to support low-speed handling and reduce pilot workload.

"The swift G1 achievement reflects the hard work and productive collaboration between Electra and the FAA, who are working together to make the future of aviation real," said Marc Allen, CEO of Electra. "We are focused now on carrying forward this strong momentum into the G-2 phase of our work with the FAA."

For novel aircraft, establishing the G1 certification basis is an important early milestone in the type-certification process. It determines how new technologies will be evaluated and provides the framework for proving that the aircraft meets the safety standards required for commercial passenger and cargo operations.

Electra's EL9 is the unlock for Direct Aviation, a new category of accessible, point-to-point air mobility. Direct Aviation connects people from where they are to where they want to go, avoiding long drives and congested airport hubs.

The EL9 is designed to make this possible by moving beyond reliance on large airports alone to a broader network of ultra-short access points, including novel access points, general aviation airports, and congestion-free airport integration. The EL9 can take off and land in 150 feet or less and is designed to carry up to nine passengers on routes up to 330 nautical miles, in a way that meets the Rule of Six: providing unparalleled access, quiet, payload, range, safety, and affordability.

A next-level flight display system

The AXIS family of flight displays features three display sizes — 11.6-inch landscape, 8-inch portrait1 and 8-inch landscape1— that include highly responsive touchscreen displays as well as physical controls for quick access to key functions. Each display can be configured as a primary flight display (PFD) or multi-function display (MFD) with an optional engine indication system (EIS). Pilots can maximize their situational awareness with full-screen or split-screen options, leveraging a familiar yet modernized user interface. The flight displays are configurable for both experimental and certified aircraft and provide incredible flexibility for installation across many aircraft types.

First-of-its-kind integration

AXIS 11.6-inch displays are optionally available with a TSO certified IFR GPS, COMM radio, NAV radio and audio panel all built into a single display. This combined capability from a single display creates a highly integrated panel experience and enables a simpler and more cost-effective installation. The VHF COMM radio offers 10 watts of transmit power, supports 8.33khz frequency tuning and standby COMM monitoring, allowing pilots to monitor a standby frequency while tuned to the active ATC frequency. Pilots can access the flight plan across displays and easily load waypoints or VORs, holds, GPS and ILS procedures and more. The built-in 4-place intercom audio panel includes dual-comm switching with support for one external radio, comm playback and Bluetooth capability for music and phone calls. Available in three certified (TSO) variants, the base version offers a PFD/MFD, while the GPS/COMM and GPS/NAV/COMM models include an IFR GPS and integrated audio panel. Experimental and LSA aircraft can leverage both certified and non-TSO versions of the 11.6-inch displays.

Enhanced situational awareness

Important information is easily accessible on the PFD including primary flight data, as well as the horizontal situation indicator (HSI) which can include an embedded map or traffic view. Widgets provide additional situational awareness on the PFD by displaying three compact views of MFD functions including map, flight plan, weather, traffic and more. Enhanced Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT™) provides 3D depictions of terrain, obstacles, runway and taxiway markings and more, allowing for pilots to clearly interpret their surroundings. Pathway rectangles will help pilots to visualize the highway in the sky, depicting their flight path including enroute legs, flight track, course intercepts and more. Additionally, 3D SafeTaxi® provides pilots with a three-dimensional, exocentric view of the airport environment directly on their PFD, reducing potential confusion by giving a clear, localized picture of taxiways, runways, hangars and surrounding buildings.

The MFD features dynamic mapping, ADS-B traffic2, weather2, waypoint information (including terminal charts) and expanded EIS. Additionally, an HDMI video input on each display allows for live-camera video monitoring.

Innovative safety tools

AXIS supports many of Garmin's award-winning safety enhancing technologies. A dedicated emergency button is located on the display bezel, allowing pilots to quickly access emergency procedure options if needed. Smart Glide™ – a Garmin Autonomí™ technology – helps pilots in loss of engine power emergencies by efficiently navigating to an airport in range and, if the aircraft is equipped with either a GFC™ 500 or GFC 600, the system can auto-engage to fly the aircraft enroute.

Terminal safety solutions include award-winning Runway Occupancy Awareness (ROA), a solution that uses ADS-B traffic to alert the crew of potential runway incursions caused by nearby airborne aircraft, taxiing aircraft and ground vehicles. Additionally, optional SurfaceWatch™ runway monitoring technology provides general situational awareness in airport environments as well as visual and aural cues to help prevent pilots from taking off or landing on a taxiway.

Advanced engine monitoring

The EIS within AXIS provides aircraft with real-time data to help better manage engine operation and protect aircraft engines. Large, prominent engine gauges provide color-coded pointers and data bands that indicate normal operating ranges, cautions and exceedances. Bar gauges display numerical values for additional precision. With an interface adapter and sensors, AXIS can serve as the primary EIS display in piston-powered aircraft equipped with most normally aspirated or turbocharged 4- to 6-cylinder engines, plus radial and turbine-powered experimental aircraft3. Upon landing, flight and engine data logs can be automatically uploaded to flyGarmin.com via the Garmin Pilot™ app or the GDL® 60 datalink1 and PlaneSync™ service. Pilots can optionally choose to share these logs with analysis services such as FlySto or SavvyAviation to gain deeper insights on engine health, maintenance updates, flight analysis and more.

Stay connected

Advanced connectivity options allow pilots to stay more connected than ever before. Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow pilots to connect with Garmin Pilot in-flight as well as share GPS, traffic, weather, flight plans and more. PlaneSync, powered by the GDL 60 datalink1, will support automatic database downloads3, remote aircraft status4 as well as automatic flight log uploading. A built-in USB-C data port supports data transfer capabilities like downloading databases and offloading flight logs. The USB-C port will also support device charging up to 27W. Additionally, Database Concierge allows pilots to download updates to their Garmin Pilot app and wirelessly transfer to their compatible avionics via a compatible mobile device.

The RX10 V keeps the series' resolution, super-telephoto reach, and integrated lens design, and adds AI-powered Real-time Recognition AF (auto focus) for accurate subject identification. Paired with blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 fps*2 (frames per second) with full 60 fps/sec. AF/AE (auto exposure) tracking, it holds focus on fast, unpredictable subjects. At a press conference held within the Genesis Hospitality inside the famed Circuit de la Sarthe, the brand unveiled the Magma GT3 Concept, outlined a potential future vision for Genesis and Genesis Magma Racing, and shared plans to expand its presence into new European markets as part of its broader global growth strategy.
