In my opinion, there are two reasons for backing up data.

1. When we have to transfer files from one computer to another
2. When we want to backup our data as a safety precaution

Let’s discuss both of them and how we can achieve both our data backup objectives in Windows 7.

Transfer files from one computer to another

As I have already mentioned that Windows 7 is really easy to use especially the start menu search has been a terrific addition. We only have to press the  button and type a few letters of what we want to search in our start menu and the result is instantaneous and organized. Same is the case with Windows Settings Transfer Wizard, we just have to write easy transfer or windows easy transfer and the start menu will show the program straight away.

Windows Easy Transfer has three options to backup data to.

1. Easy transfer cable
2. A network location
3. An external device like external HDD or USB drive

All the three options are easy to understand. Choose which ever option suits you.

Follow the instructions and you’re done.

Backup data for safety precaution

We can use the previous method for this purpose also but Windows 7 gives us a specialized tool to backup data for safety precaution so that in case we lose our system or the system gets corrupt, we can easily restore the data as per our needs.

To get started with the backup process, in the start menu search, type backup and start the program called Backup and Restore. Select Set up backup and the backup program will start. Select the destination first and then follow the instructions to take the backup of whatever you want.

Keyboard shortcuts also increase the overall efficiency of a person. Windows 7 comes with some great shortcuts that are new and were not there in previous versions of Windows like Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Let’s begin with the shortcuts that are new in Windows 7:

+ SPACEBAR	Reveals the desktop until the keys are pressed.
+ ARROW	Places active window in different positions. e.g., LEFT arrow snaps to left, RIGHT arrow snaps to right, UP arrow maximizes the window and DOWN arrow minimizes the window.
SHIFT +   + ARROW	If you have more than one display, you can use this shortcut to move the window between different displays.
ALT + P	This enables preview pane in Windows Explorer. This is especially handy with pictures and videos. Just enable the preview pane and the selected file will be shown in the preview pane.
+ P	This shortcut is helpful when you have a projector or multiple displays attached to your Windows 7 system. It display different options for multiple displays.
Left SHIFT + Left ALT + Print Screen	Enables or disables high contrast accessibility option.
+ +	My favorite. Zoom in the screen at any time.
+ -	Zoom out of the Zoom in option back to normal display.

Windows 7 comes with a new feature called Jump Lists. This is a new way to organize your taskbar. There are several shortcuts related to the taskbar and Jump Lists. Here’s the list I’ve got from Microsoft:

If we want to have a closer look at the features offered in each edition of Windows 7, we have to see the following chart:

Please note that the only difference between Windows 7 Ultimate Edition and Windows 7 Enterprise Edition is that the Enterprise Edition is distributed via distributors. First disable Windows File Protection using WFPS10.exe

Open “%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll” file in Resource Hacker and go to:

Dialog -> 1020 -> 1033

Now replace the existing code in right-side pane with the code present in following file:

Click on Compile Script button.

You’ll also have to replace existing AVIs in the file with new ones. Download following Zip file and extract it:

After extracting the Zip file you’ll get 3 AVI files. Replace existing AVIs in shell32.dll file with these new ones in following manner:

AVI -> 160 ->1033 with 160.avi

AVI -> 161 ->1033 with 161.avi

AVI -> 162 ->1033 with 162.avi

AVI -> 163 ->1033 with 162.avi

AVI -> 164 ->1033 with 162.avi

In the Resource Type type AVI

In the Resource Name type respective name e.g 162,163 etc

In the Resource Language type 1033. See the figure for more detail

After extracting the BMP file from it, add it at 404 location in file. Just click on Action -> Add a new resource and then click on Open file with new resource button. Select the downloaded BMP file and click on Open. Now in Resource Name enter 404 and in Resource Language enter 1033 and click on Add Resource button.

Restart Windows to take effect.

If something gets wrong then you can undo the changes. Simply navigate to windows system32 folder and delete shell32.dll and rename shell32_original.dll to shell32.dll

1. Facebook Video – as facebook has became “a must have” account for many people, facebook video is “a must have” add-on for them. Many times you may want to download any embeded video (ex. a funny video or whatever), but you notice thet there is not any download link provided for embeded videos…

Videos can be downloaded in high definition, mp4 or 3gp format (3gp is suitable for most mobile phones).

5. FireBug – lets you view, inspect or directly edit the source code of any web page. It’s especialy great for those who want to learn HTML or web script. Upon looking into the mail closely, there was an attachment named Facebook_Password_3eb0e.zip. To this point I was sure that this was a virus or something. I uploaded the attachment to virustotal.com which is a service which scans the file through all major antivirus systems. You can see the results by going to the following link:

You can see that most of the antivirus systems have identified the Facebook_Password_3eb0e.zip file as a trojan.

So what does this trojan do? Upon opening and running Facebook_Password_3eb0e.zip, it will call rogue anti spywares and will inject its own code in legitimate Windows processes like svchost.exe. And a lot of other things things to infect the system fully.

And how did it manage to send it from my friend’s facebook account? Most probably, your friend’s account has been compromised. Facebook is aware of the situation and advises to change the password of your facebook account immediately if it has been sent from your account or if it is from your friend’s account, ask them to change their passwords immediately and scan their computers with an up to date antivirus.

A few days back, I got a request to review ALLCapture from the same company, Balesio. So here I am with some testing on the software.

First of all, installation, a few clicks on the Next buttons and that’s it, as simple as it gets. When we open ALLCapture, it opens with a blank screen and we have to create a new project to get going. The new project requires the recording options to be set in the beginning. The options can be changed at any time before recording starts.

Now it will show a red outline on the screen that is the screen recording area. The really cool thing about this area is that we can resize it according to our needs. I really like this feature.

It would have been even great if there were a sticky outline option. When I click Record, the record dialog box will disappear and a control will appear just below the recording area which is very good for controlling what to record and what not to.

Since this is a professional tool, working in layers is really easy. If anyone has used Adobe Flash, the  layering concept is similar to it. If I’m doing a video tutorial, I can add sound, pictures, notes, highlight certain parts of the recording screen, insert balloon tips etc. This is especially very good for video reviews or tutorials. I will definitely use ALLCapture if I do any video post in the future. Here is a small animation that I made from ALLCapture.

The only thing that rather is limited in ALLCapture is the export options. There are not many export options. For example, I would love to have Export as a GIF image for use on the web etc.

Although ALLCapture costs money but you can download a trial of ALLCapture here. I’m sure you’ll be happy to buy a license of it.

USB Flash Tools is a utility which does these tasks pretty well.

It can create an image backup of the USB drive and restore it whenever we want to do it. It can also erase the contents of the USB drive securely so that the data cannot be restored through data recovery softwares.

One additional function it does is that it verifies the real capacity of the USB drive so we can be sure that our USB drive is not showing incorrect capacity.

I have now come up with a little utiltiy that allows you to change the logon for Windows 7,  Logon Changer

You can select any image as logon with this utility. Change Logon Screen button allows you to select any image but it should match the screen size properly. For example for a widescreen monitor you should select a widescreen image.

While browsing the internet, I found a simple firefox extension that will add Windows 7 superbar features  to you Firefox.

“Winfox” can add following functionality to Firefox under Windows 7:

• Frequent Items support
• Tasks support
• Pin support
• Auto-detection of the Firefox directory and user profile
• FavIcon support (downloads top fifteen favicons to your Firefox Cache directory)
• Launch Firefox by clicking on the Winfox icon
• Linking of all open Firefox windows – Sets all Firefox windows to use Winfox (only if Winfox is running)
• Taskbar progress overlay when downloading files
• Number of open tabs illustrated using a taskbar icon overlay
• Multiple Firefox profile support

Installation Technique

By downloading the zip file you will have 3 files,Extract them, run the WinFox_x86 or WinFox_x64 depending on your arcitechture. On the Destination Folder put you Firefox installed directory for example

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

Now run Firefox and drag winfox.xpi to your firefox window. Select install and close it.

Pin Winfox to Taskbar to utilize easy launch and access to your Firefox Jumplist.

If you forget your Windows password or if your password expires, you must reset your password before you can log on to your computer. This article contains two methods that you can try to reset your password so that you can log on to your computer again.
This article is intended for a beginning to intermediate computer user.
You may find it easier to follow the steps if you print this article first.

Reset forgotten or expired password

If you forget your password or if your password expires, there are three methods that you can use to log on to create a new password. One method is to use a password reset disk, if you have created one. By using the password reset disk, you can recover your user account and your personalized computer settings. Another method is to log on using the administrator account to delete the forgotten password and then to create a new password, The third method is to use windows password recovery tool. You only need to reset the password to “Blank” without reformatting or reinstalling your system.
The instructions guide you through each step and help you verify that the problem is resolved.

Method 1: Use a password reset disk

To log on to the computer by using a password reset disk, follow these steps. If your computer is or was a member of a domain, go to the “Windows XP Professional in a domain” section and follow those steps.

Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional

1. Restart the computer.

2. On the Windows XP logon screen, click the user name that you want to use, and then press ENTER.
Note You receive the following error message:

Did you forget your password? You can click the “?” button to see your password hint. Or you can use your password reset disk. Please type your password again. Be sure to use the correct uppercase and lowercase letters.

3. Click Use your password reset disk. The Password Reset Wizard starts. The Password Reset Wizard enables you to create a new password for your user account.

4. In the Password Reset Wizard dialog box, click Next.

5. Insert the password reset disc into the CD drive, and then click Next.

6. Type a new password in the Type a new password box, and then type the password again in the Type the password again to confirm box.

7. In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint for the password, and then click Next.

8. Click Finish, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

If you were able to reset your password and are now able to log on successfully, you have resolved the issue, and you are finished. If you are still unable to log on, try method 2.

Windows XP Professional in a domain

To log on to a computer by using a password reset disk, when that computer is a member of a domain, or was disconnected from a domain, follow these steps:

1. Restart the computer.

2. In the Welcome to Windows dialog box, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

3. In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type an incorrect password in the Password box, and then click OK.

4. In the Logon Failed dialog box, click Reset. The Password Reset Wizard starts. You can use the Password Reset Wizard to create a new password for your local account.

5. On the Welcome to the Password Reset Wizard page, click Next.

6. Insert the password reset disc into the CD drive, and then click Next.

7. Type a new password in the Type a new password box, and then type the password again in the Type the password again to confirm box.

8. In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint for the password, and then click Next.

9. Click Finish, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

If you were able to reset your password and are now able to log on successfully, you have resolved the issue, and you are finished. If you are still unable to log on, try method 2.

Method 2: Log on as an administrator to reset the password

If you did not create a password reset disk, you may be able to log on as an administrator to reset a forgotten or expired password. The steps to do this differ if the computer is a stand-alone computer or a member of a workgroup of two or more, or a member of a domain. Select the appropriate set of steps from the following to try to log on as the administrator to reset the password.

Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional

To log on to a computer as the administrator to reset a password, try the following steps.

1. Log on as an administrator.

a. Restart the computer.

b. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE two times, and then type the name of the administrator user account.

c. In the Password box, type the administrator password, and then click OK.
Note If the administrator password is set to a blank password, do not type a password before you click OK.

2. Reset the password.

. Click Start, and then click Run.

a. Type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.

b. On the Users tab, click the name of the user account that you want to reset the password for, and then click Reset Password.

c. Type a new password in the New password box, and then type the password again in the Confirm new password box, and then click OK.

d. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

If you can log on as an administrator to reset your password and you can now log on successfully, you have resolved the issue, and you are finished. If you are still unable to log on, go to the “Next Steps” section.

Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional in a workgroup

To log on to a computer as the administrator to reset a password, when that computer is in a workgroup of more than one member, follow these steps:

1. Log on as an administrator.

a. Restart the computer, and then press the F8 key during startup until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.

b. On the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.

c. Select Microsoft Windows XP edition, and then press ENTER.
Note In this step, edition represents the correct Windows edition.

d. On the To begin, click your user name screen, click Administrator, and then type the administrator password.

e. Press ENTER, and then click Yes.

2. Reset the password.

. Click Start and then click Run.

a. Type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.

b. Click the name of the user account that you want to reset the password for.

c. Click Change the Password, and then type a new password.
Note If you do not want to use a password, click Remove password, and then continue to step “e.”

d. Click Change Password.

e. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

If you can log on as an administrator to reset your password and can now log on successfully, you have resolved the issue, and you are finished. If you are still unable to log on, go to the “Next Steps” section.

Windows XP Professional in a domain

To log on to a computer as the administrator to reset a password, when that computer is a member of a domain, follow these steps:

1. Log on as an administrator.

a. In the Welcome to Windows dialog box, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then type the name of the administrator user account.

b. In the Password box, type the administrator password, and then click OK.
Note If the administrator password is set to a blank password, do not type a password before you click OK.

2. Reset the password.

. Click Start and then click Run.

a. Type compmgmt.msc , and then click OK.

b. In the Computer Management (Local) dialog box, expand Local Users and Groups.

c. Click the Users folder, and then right-click the user account that you want to reset the password for.

d. Click Set Password, and then click Proceed.

e. Type a new password in the New password box, type the password again in the Confirm password box, and then click OK two times.

f. Restart the computer, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

Method 3: Use windows password recovery tool

If you are not a computer technician, or not familiar with computer system operations, you may feel the above methods are scary and still can’t figure out what I am saying. Then you may try to use the software programs which may suit you. I’ve found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most effective. The program can easily reset the password to “Blank” without reformatting or reinstalling your system. Follow these steps:

1. Download Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0:

2. Burn your Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0 CD.

3. Insert newly created CD in your CD drive and reboot your computer.

4. Select Windows installation to be processed:

7. The user’s password has been successfully reset

The third method can 100% reset any windows login password. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password.
