UndoClose: Re-Open Recently Closed Folders And Files In Windows

We all wish there was an Undo button for all our actions in our life but life doesn’t give much of an option in this regard. But we can create undo buttons for the things which are in our control. The best example is a browser. Almost all the modern browsers including Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome have an option to undo and re-open a tab that was closed recently. But when it comes to Windows files and folders, we are left with a different option. We can only see the recently opened files, folders and programs through the start menu option (needs to be enabled in start menu).

Undo Close is a free and portable program which adds the Undo function in Windows. It constantly monitors the opening of files and folders and logs everything. When opened it will sit in the system tray and do the monitoring. If you have recently closed a folder and want to re-open it, you can use the hotkey CTRL-Shift-F. If you have close a program or file and want to re-open it, you can use the hotkey CTRL-Shift-A. You can also change the hotkeys in program settings which you can get by right clicking the app in the system tray.

There is an option to run this program at startup. This makes it easy to use the program as set it and forget it. Once you have configured everything, you will only need to remember the two hotkeys the I have mentioned earlier.

My wish is that this utility should also be available as an installable app. And it should cater to the universal undo functions like Ctrl-Z.

Firefox is still going through rapid iteration cycles. Soon after the release of Firefox 10 Final, Firefox 11 beta has been released. Firefox 11 offers more interesting features geared mostly towards developers and automatic updates and synchronization features. Let’s look at the new features in Firefox 11.

New features of Firefox 11 for the developers:

Page Inspector 3D View

Now you can have a tilted view of the site you are inspecting. Tilt is a new WebGL-based website visualization tool that illustrates the relationship between various parts of a websites and their ancestors in 3D. The Tilt 3D view is integrated with the Page Inspector tool and is particularly useful when searching through problems in the HTML structure.

To access this feature, you will need to go to Firefox menu –> Web Developer –> Inspect and then select 3D from the inspect toolbar.

Style Editor

Firefox 11 includes the new Style Editor tool, which gives developers complete freedom to edit CSS files for a page with live updates in the browser. Developers can also save the edited css files on their computers for further processing.

SPDY Support

Firefox Beta now supports SDPY. SPDY is a transport protocol designed as a successor to HTTP that reduces the amount of time it takes for websites to load. This improves page load times and reduces server load because headers are compressed and fewer connections are used.

New features of Firefox 11 for the users

Add-on Sync

Now the Firefox users can also sync add-ons in addition to their data across other platforms and computers. This will help the users to do their work seamlessly without having to worry about installing all their required add-ons on each installation of Firefox.

Migration Tool Update

Firefox 11 contains an interesting migration tool which can be used to import data from Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Safari. All the data including the preferences and data including bookmarks, history, cookies and user profiles will be imported to your installation of Firefox 11.

Skype 5.8 Offline Installer Direct Download Links

Microsoft has silently updated Skype to Skype 5.8 which is the latest release of Skype. The update is not yet visible from the Skype auto updater. If you go to Skype –> Help –> Check for updates, Skype will tell you that you have installed the latest release. I came to know about the update through Skype blog.

There are quite a few enhancements made in 5.8 release. Let’s look at the major features of Skype 5.8:

Full HD video-calling: If you have Logitech C920 webcam, you will now be able to call your friends and family with HD quality video streaming using Skype 5.8. Logitech C920 does all the video encoding inside camera which makes it faster to process and stream the video. You will need to have at least 2MBps Internet connection in order to run the video chat in HD video-calling mode.
Support for Facebook audio and video-calling (beta): Facebook introduced video chat sometime ago and now you can chat (Voice and video both) with your Facebook friends right within Skype 5.8.
Group screen sharing: This feature enables one to share the whole desktop or a specific application window with multiple users. This can be very useful for conferencing and remote meetings using Skype 5.8.
Hide offline Facebook contacts: Another feature related to Facebook. Now you can hide your Facebook friends who are not online. This will clear up the contacts clutter from the Skype Contacts window.
Push to Talk: This feature has been introduced before but now it’s a part of Skype 5.8. You can configure Push to Talk feature by going to Skype –> tools –> options –> advanced –> hotkeys

While the beta version is only for testing for the developers, you may download and install it on your computer if you want to play with the new features of Flash Player 11.2. Features

Let’s talk about the new features introduced in Flash Player 11.2:

Multithreaded Video Decoding is a new technology which will fix a no. of legacy playback issues. This modern architecture will also enable future performance enhancements
across all platforms.

Flash Player background updates – Flash Player 11.2 offers a new feature which will let you update Flash Player whenever a new build of Flash is available. The system will check for new versions of the software after every 24 hours. The user can opt out of this automatic updates feature. This feature will only be enabled in the Flash Player 11.2 Final.

Mouse lock, relative mouse coordinates, right and middle click events – Infinite scrolling and new mouse events to enable first-person shooter experiences enabling a better gaming experience.

Firefox is a full featured browser from Mozilla. It is open source and free and a huge community is building and improving it. The best feature of Firefox is its extensibility. It can be extended to any level by the use of add-ons and extensions.

Historically Firefox has been a victim to huge memory leakage problems but now Mozilla seems to be getting its grip on this problem in the latest versions of Firefox. Firefox 10 channel has been updated and Firefox 10 stable has been released. Let’s see some of the features of Firefox 10:

Completely redesigned search suggestions feature
The new tab page will be more like Google Chrome and will feature tiles of bookmarks and most visited pages

Silent updates feature has also been added. Hopefully the critical updates will be downloaded and installed automatically without annoying the user.

There are some known issues in this release of Firefox 10.

Two-digit browser version numbers may cause a small number of website incompatibilities
If you try to start Firefox using a locked profile, it will crash
For some users, scrolling in the main GMail window will be slower than usual
Firefox notifications may not work properly with Growl 1.3 or later
Under certain conditions, scrolling and text input may be jerky
Silverlight video may not play on some Macintosh hardware

Automatically Download All Streaming Videos From The Internet

I have been using RealPlayer for downloading streaming videos from the Internet. It seems to be the best when it comes to downloading streaming videos from the Internet as it supports more than 10,000 sites on which videos are hosted including Youtube, Vimeo etc.

A few days back I cam across another software VSO Downloader which takes a completely different approach from all other streaming video or audio downloaders. Instead of using the URL of the download page or giving a download link on the streaming video (as in case of RealPlayer), VSO Downloader can automatically download all the streaming videos that are played in any browser. It can detect and capture the streaming video from the network stream. This can be very useful if you want to download many videos at the same time.

You only have to enable the detection feature in VSO Downloader and everything else is automatic. It will inform you with an information bubble popup above the system tray and start downloading the video.

An MP3 converter is also integrated with VSO Downloader which lets you extract the audio from the downloaded video and then save it as an MP3 file.

The good thing about VSO downloader is that it can automatically detect the video ads and does not download the ads which can be an annoying experience.

VSO Downloader also includes a resume button in case you have to pause the video downloading. You can easily resume the download if the download process is interrupted during the download.

Chrome is a popular browser from Google. It is especially gaining popularity because of its speed, simplicity and ease of use. When you open Google Chrome, the graphical user interface is quite simple and minimalistic and only the tools that are absolutely required by the user are displayed.

The other notable features of Google Chrome include safe browsing. Chrome automatically shows warnings on suspicious and malware sites. The Google translate feature is built into Chrome. The browser will automatically offer you to translate a page if it is not in the default language. This feature is a great time saver.

Like the awesome bar in Firefox, Google also has one address bar which can be used for everything. You can directly search Google using the search bar. It also gives search suggestions while typing in the address bar.

Google Chrome also includes a private browsing mode called incognito mode. All the pages opened in incognito mode will not be shown in the browser history.

Office 2010 Language Interface Packs (LIPs) Download

In my previous article, I have shared Office 2010 language packs download links. The language packs are usually meant for professional and enterprise users and cost separately than the standard Microsoft Office installation. Home users and small businesses have not been left alone but Microsoft has also given options for home users and small businesses by providing Office 2010 Language Interface Packs also known as LIPs.

The main difference between the Microsoft Office Language packs and Language Interface packs is that while the language packs provide a lot more features, they have to be purchased separately while language interface packs are free of cost and are available for download freely. The Language interface packs have limited features but they are available in all 38 languages which Microsoft Office 2010 supports.

The Language Interface Packs (LIPs) as the name implies only change the display language of the Office programs while the help and support system still remains in English. And only a limited no. of proofing tools are included in LIPs. Most of the LIPs can change the ScreenTip language which makes it easier to get help about the buttons and features of Microsoft Office 2010.

Microsoft Office 2010 needs to be installed first in order to install the LIPs. Recently I gave the direct download links for Office 2010. If you have already installed Office 2010 and want to install Service Pack 1 that has been released some time ago, then you can either update through Windows update. If you prefer to have an offline installer for Office 2010 SP1, then you can download the service packs from the links given at the end.

The Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2010 provides increased stability, performance and security improvements to the programs included in the suite. In order to install this update, you will need to have at least the following system configuration:

Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3) (32-bit)
Windows Vista with SP1 (32-bit or 64-bit)
Windows Server 2003 R2 (32-bit or 64-bit) with MSXML 6.0 installed
Windows Server 2008 or later versions (32-bit or 64-bit)
Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit).

You must already have installed Microsoft Office 2010 because the download links only contain the service pack files.

Watch Restart Process Of Every Operating System

It is always good to see how the Operating Systems have evolved through the history. I’m not talking about only Windows but the Operating Systems contain every type of Operating System including Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Unix etc.

I have found out a website that displays the restart process of many Operating Systems. The Operating Systems include very old ones like The NeXT, OS/2, Windows 3.1, Workbench and also the new versions of Windows like Windows XP or Mac OSX.

To see the startup process, head on to the startup page. It will first load the restart page which takes a while. After the page has loaded, you will see a plethora of shutdown dialog boxes of each Operating System.

At first this looks like a static image but if you hover your mouse cursor to any of the dialog box, it will actually be responsive and if you press a button, it will show you the reboot procedure of that particular Operating System.

After the restart process, the same dialog box screen will be shown. So you can easily cycle through all the restart pages one at a time. If you have speakers turned on, you will also hear the startup sound of each Operating System. For example, I loved it when I restarted Windows 98 and got the same old startup sound. What Is The Difference Between A Torrent File And A Magnet link

If you frequently visit and use Bittorrent sites, you should have noticed that there are two types of downloads given for each torrent. One is a magnet link and other is a torrent file. Both of them are used in peer to peer networks but they are completely different from each other while satisfying the same purpose. Today we will discuss the difference between the two and their advantages and disadvantages.

Torrent File

Torrent file is a file with the extension .torrent. You need to download the torrent file to your computer and open it in a bittorrent client in order to start the downloading process. The torrent file makes use of trackers (DHT Networks) which can connect to different peers in order to download the file in parts. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of a torrent file.

Advantages:

Faster Connection meaning that you’ll be able to connect to peers faster as it is managed by a central tracker.
Easier to search through web than magnets. You can easily download the torrent files and save them on your computer for downloading later. You can also share the torrent files easily.

Disadvantages:

Trackers are needed when downloading a file. If the tracker is down and there are no existing connections, you will never be able to download the file.
Most torrent clients do not have search functions. You need to find the torrents from the Internet.
If a torrent file was stored on web for a long time, the tracker may be expired already. It is almost impossible to find currently existing seeds or leechers.

Magnet link

Magnet link is a link in-spite of a file. The magnet link itself contains all the information it needs to identify the peers and start downloading the requested file. The magnet link does not require any centralized authority like a tracker in order to work properly. First let us see how the magnet link looks like. A typical magnet link looks like this:

Lets look at each part of the magnet link individually:

They are more user based and easy to use.
Sharing resources using a magnet link is relatively easier than a torrent file.
Most of the apps that support magnet links do have a search function in which you can search any kind of magnet links.

Disadvantages:

The performance and speed of magnet links is usually slower than the torrents.
Less control on speed and downloaded.

Manage Windows Hosts File In Firefox Directly

Windows Hosts file is a popular system file which is used as a local DNS server in Windows. It means that when you browse the Internet, the browser will first look for the site you have opened in the Hosts file. If it is present in the Hosts file, the site will be translated to its IP address quickly and then the browser starts to load data from that IP address. The default Windows Hosts file is located in the following folder:

C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers\\etc

Let’s take an example to understand this more clearly. A user wants to open www.google.com in Firefox. He will type www.google.com in the address bar (awesome bar in Firefox). Behind the scenes, Firefox will first lookup that address in the Windows Hosts file. If it is not listed there, it will go to the default DNS server specified in network settings.

Hosts file consists of the web address and the IP address of a website so that the translation from web address to IP address and vice versa becomes very simple and fast. Hosts file can be very useful if used carefully. What I have done is that I have listed down all the domains that I use very frequently and their IP addresses in the Hosts file. This saves me a lot of time and the website opens very quickly. For example, I have listed down facebook.com, google.com, technize.net, twitter.com etc. in the Hosts file for faster access.

Here I will tell you about two Firefox Add-ons which can be used to manage the Windows Hosts file from within Firefox so that you may be able to add or remove entries in the Hosts file instantly without leaving your browser.

Change Hosts

Change Hosts is a fantastic Firefox Add-on which is compatible with Firefox 9 (the latest version of Firefox right now). This add-on lets you do many functions on Hosts file right from your Firefox browser. You can create many Hosts files and switch to and activate any one of them. For example, you can build a different Hosts file for your work environment and a different Hosts file for your home needs. There is no limit to the no. of Hosts files you can create.

You can also flush DNS from Change Hosts add-on. It sits on the add-on bar at the bottom of Firefox browser. It will show the active Hosts file and the IP address of the currently opened domain.
