Google has launched a brand new real-time communication tool. Called Google Wave, it is expected to be available to the public later this year. The developers behind Wave said that it is an application that combines the features of email, instant messaging, web chatting and wikis to name a few.

Google Wave is developed by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen and Stephanie Hannon of Google’s Sydney, Australia office. It is built on the assumption that as a technology email and IM are not up-to-date. You have got to agree. Web has indeed come a long way since its inception.

What is a Wave?

A wave is basically a piece of conversation and a document in equal parts. You can share a Wave with anyone you choose. Participants on a wave can reply to a message, edit the content of a Wave and invite more participants at any point of time. Google wave supports richly formatted text, photos, videos, map and a lot more so that people can communicate and work together as part of team in real time.

A wave is live. Google Wave is built with the objective of facilitating live transmission of data. As a result of this participants on a wave can communicate faster, see edits as they occur and interact with other participants in real-time.

What can I do with Google Wave?

Wave is basically an advanced way of navigating and participating in communication on the web. The Wave Interface is similar to the Gmail interface in many ways. The navigation is on the Left-hand side bar. A list of contacts extracted from your Google contacts appear below the navigation with their pictures. The major portion of the screen is occupied by the Wave inbox. Several indicators are there to signify whether there is new content in a particular wave. When you click on a wave thread it will open another window to the right of the inbox where you can see the entire wave.

You can reply to a Wave message by typing below the message. To respond to a particular part of the message, you only need to type below the part you are replying to.

Consider this situation. You are having an online conversation with one of your friends. Now you want to invite another friend to join the conversation. You can do this by going to your contacts and dragging that person’s picture into the Wave. The person who just joined the conversation may not be aware of what the other participants were discussing until then. So what will he do? Well, he can use the playback feature. The playback feature allows a participant to rewind a wave so that he can see what happened in the past.

If two participants in a wave are online at the same time, they can communicate with each other in real time. To do this, you have to simply start typing and your friend will be able to see your words as you type them. This is very much like an advanced instant messaging system. The autocorrect feature will correct your spelling as you type. There is also an auto-translation feature. Now if you are not comfortable with your friend seeing your words as you enter them, you can enter a draft mode. This feature hides your words until you press the send button.

What if there are more than two people in the same Wave and you want to send a private message to just one of them? Well, you can do that too. It is easy to have a private conversation within the wave so that only you and your intended recipient will see or hear it.

Features Galore

The other features supported by Wave include the wiki-style group editing. So you can correct or append information. There are real-time edit updates to ensure that people editing a Wave at the same time don’t get confused by what others are doing.

With Wave you can share photos. While most other features of Wave will work without additional add-ons, this feature requires that you have a browser with Gears installed. You can share pictures by dragging and dropping them into the Wave Window. There is no need to attach files. Other things that can be shared using Google Wave include Google Maps, event notifications and games.

Google Wave isn’t just another application built for a particular site. Wave is built in such a way that you can use it on any site you want. For instance, waves can be embedded on a site or blog. You can also share a wave as a blog post. Your readers will then be able to interact with the wave in real time. Another significant feature is that lots of applications that have already been built are compatible with Google Wave.

What is the future of Wave?

Google Wave is still in its infancy. The features available right now are only a fraction of what they intend to be when they are fully ready. Since Google plans to open source Wave, it will ultimately be the development community who decide what the final product will look like.

Bing is Microsoft’s new search engine. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Bing will help people find information more quickly and use that information to accomplish the desired tasks. So will Bing beat Google in the war of search engines? Well, chances are slim. Bing isn’t quite a Google killer, but it does have some interesting features.

The best thing about Bing is that it displays more information on the search page in a more organized way than Google does. So how does Bing show more information? Well, to display more relevant information Bing organizes search results into categories.

Categories appear in the Explorer pane which runs down the left hand side bar of the search results page. Depending on the search word you enter you can see different categories of results on the explorer pane. For example, if your search word is ‘Tokyo’ search categories such as map, tourism, attractions, restaurants, weather, images and so on will appear in the explorer pane.

If the search term is ‘George W Bush’, the categories under the explorer pane will be Images, Biography, Family, Library, Interview and Timeline. Categories in the explorer pane are called quick tabs. These quick tabs are a way of telling the user that for a search term like George W Bush, Bing has results that relate to his biography, his images, his family and so on.

Categories will not appear for every word you search. Right now, only a few words will produce categorized search results. Sub categories called ‘Related Searches’ and ‘Search History’ appear below the Quick tabs.

Categorized Search Results

Another interesting feature of Bing is the categorized search results. The categorized search results are based on the categories in the Explorer pane. On a categorized search results page, Bing will show the categories from the Explorer Pane as the headings on the center page. Below each heading there will be search results relevant to that heading. So for example in the categorized search results page for a term like George W Bush, the user will get to see images of Bush across the top of the page followed by results under the headings Bush’s biography, Bush’s family, Bush’s library etc. These headers are clickable and link to additional sites related to the subject.

Search History

The search history area is also located on the left side of the search page. It appears below the ‘Categories’ and ‘Related Searches’. If you continue to use the same browser, the search history feature will be able to keep track of your queries for up to 48 hours. You can clear your history manually if you need to. Bing’s search history system is pretty basic compared to the search history feature offered by Google. But Microsoft said that they will continue to improve this feature.

Best Match

Some queries on Bing will generate only a single ‘Best Match’ result. The Best Match feature is based on the assumption that for certain search terms the user needs only a single link. The Best Match result appears when Bing is confident that the single link it shows is that of the very best site related to the query. Under the Best Match Bing will show links to important pages on the site and customer service numbers. In most cases a Best Match result will be followed by other search results too.

Quick Previews

The quick preview feature is designed to make search easier by showing more information. To activate this feature you only need to hover next to the right of a result on the search page and you will see a short excerpt from the site. This is a very useful feature because in many cases a user cannot decide whether a particular site is useful or not just by looking at the short description that appears below the clickable link. Since the quick preview feature shows more information from the inside pages of a site, a user will be able to decide whether this is the site they are looking for.

Instant Answers

This feature allows you to find instant answers to some of your queries. For instance, you can enter a flight number to get airline tracking information. You can also enter the names of movies followed by a Zip code and you will get the results for local listings of that movie. Google and Yahoo also offer such results.

Infinite scroll of images

This is an interesting feature. If you are searching for images on Bing you can just keep scrolling through the results until you find the one you were looking for. There is not need to hit the Next button.

Preview Video Feature

The preview video feature can auto-play videos in the search results. You only need to hover over them.

Another useful feature is the shopping search. It offers a variety of reviews. The opinion ranking feature is helpful too because it categorizes reviews into positive and negative.
