The age of social networking is upon us. I know that it has reached the outer limits of the population because my 86 year old grandfather recently set up a social networking account. I live in a rural area and set up my internet through http://www.satellitestarinternet.com/hughesnet_plans_pricing.html, so I have not been on Facebook for very long. The problem with my grandfather being on facebook is that he now has access to information about me and my other family members like never before. This is not necessarily a good thing. My grandfather is pretty conservative, and I have a couple of cousins who are pretty wild. For the first time he has seen what his grandkids are really like. One cousin I have is so wild and spends money so quickly, that it forced my grandfather to change his will. I only know this because my mom told me. It is kind of sad that my grandfather does not trust his own grandchildren, but to be honest, some of us are not that trustworthy. I guess this is life in the information age.

The mighty webcam! Webcams have become more and more popular as social media has captured the hearts of internet-users. The webcam was created around 1991 but did not have it's first commercial release until about 1994. They began as a computer perripheral that you really didnt need. Early on, most people where not engaging in video chats and the photo/video quality was marginal, at best.

The webcam has since become a necessary piece of equipment if your enjoy video chat, communicating on Skype, creating podcast or instructional videos. Like most technology, the webcam got more sophisticated as more applications where created that required webcam and as people began to be more social on the Internet.

One issue that has plagued many webcams, has been their poor performance in low light situations. Many webcams, due to price and usages, don't have the same video quality that can be found in standard video cameras. That has changed!

It's the top of the year and many companies are planning out their strategies for increasing their success. One area that many companies, small and large, will be planning is how to spend their advertising dollars.

This is not a business blog, but technology plays a role in just about everything in this day and age. Even when looking for an advertising agency, you must consider how well the agency is able to incorporate technology in creating advertising solutions and how well they incorporate technology in operating their business. This does not mean that, in choosing an ad agency, you go with a company that ignores and does not used 'old media' (print, television, etc.), but you want a company that has the expertise to use the best of new technologies and media and merge that with effective 'old media'.

Dancing with the stars

Thanks for the guest post by Jenny Morrow So the big hit for the past few years on ABC has been Dancing With The Stars. I see it occasionally when I turn on my http://www.directstartv.com/ channels in the evenings and most of the time I will watch a dance or two but I just haven’t really gotten in to it the way other people have. My dad actually watches every show and will call in to vote for his favorite dancer. My grandmother takes the opposite approach. She sees the contestants on various morning talk shows and makes her decision on who she wants to vote for there. Then she will go online and vote for the one person she likes based on their morning interview. I don’t think this is what they had in mind when they created this show but hey, her dancer won this time so I guess it says something for her strategy. I haven’t been able to stay with it I think because some of the celebs are just so bad. I can’t stand to watch them struggle week after week and not really get much better.

There is always something that needs to be printed. Though many companies go to great lengths to be as paperless as possible, there are always a need for printed documents, pictures and even things like receipts. Printers are very necessary. Modern printers are relatively maintenance free. You just replace the ink cartridges when they run out and the occasional print-heads cleaning and calibration. You should use original ink cartridges for your particular printer. When using genuine toner cartridges or genuine ink cartridges for your printers, you insure that you get the highest quality prints that your printer can produce. It also reduces the number of times you have to clean your print-heads as well. Since you still need to print.... do it right!

The introduction of the iPad has sparked an increase of tablet devices. You have tablet-style ebook readers, tablets that are powered with various operating systems and tablets that come in various sizes. The main thing with pc tablets is the fact that they are very portable, can perform multiple tasks and are customizable.

When buying a pc tablet there are some key things to consider:

Screen - the first thing with screens is their size. They larger screen will make it easier to type (tap) the letters when inputting text and naturally gives you a greater viewing area. You may consider a smaller screen is portability is your main concern. Also consider dot pitch. Dot pitch is the screen’s native resolution measured against the size. The more pixels per square inch usually means a sharper picture for movie-watching and clearer text for reading, though contrast, brightness and color-depth do factor in.
Wireless Connections - most all pc tablets come with Wi-Fi but if your into streaming a lot of media, you want to look for the fastest connect, which in most cases will be 802.11n. If you don't want to be limited to Wi-Fi hotspots consider getting a tablet with a 3G or 4G cell connection. You will pay more for a cell connection but you will be always connected, as long as your within your cell services' coverage area. GPS is a good feature and Bluetooth can be helpful for printing.
Operating System and Applications (Apps) - This is a matter of choice in most instances. Consider how buggy the software is. Pay attention to how quickly and smoothly Apps open up and operate. Notice if your screen gets stuck a lot and generally how responsive the device is. Both Apple and Android (the two major tablet OS makers) have a large bank of applications and most other OS makers use Android applications as Apple does not share it's applications as freely. Apple's applications tend to be a little less buggy and the OS is as well. Android gives you greater options for customization and will handle Flash content.
Storage Space - Most pc tablets will come with a few gigabytes minimum. You can get some with 64 or more gigs but due to the price of the flash memory they use, the increased storage space will significantly increase the price. Consider getting a tablet that offer a minimum of 4 gig, but has a slot that accepts SD memory cards. The ability to accept memory cards allows you to expand your storage space as need and more cheaply than buying a tablet with the memory already built in.
Outputs and Inputs - Most tablets will come with the standard headphone jack and a usb port. Some higher-end tablets may have an HDMI output for viewing on a high-definition monitor or television.Consider your planned usage to help determine what you need in terms of inputs and outputs.

A few other considerations should be the camera, whether or not the tablet has external speakers, battery-life and how well the manufacture or retailer provides support for the device.

A pc tablet will not replace your desktop! Tablets are great for consuming data and media, but are lacking when it comes to creating content, data or media.

Innovators drive technology. Think of all the electronic advances over the last twenty years. Many of us have become so accustom to have great internet service at our finger tips. It is hard to believe that in many places, there are lots of people that still do not have internet service in their home. Just think, approximately 22.7% of people, in the United States, still don't have internet service. Most of us enjoy broadband internet services, but there are many places that the infrastructure for broadband service, has not reached. For people that live in these areas, dsl or dial-up internet service is the way to go.

Don't worry, dsl provides good speeds and today's dial-up is much, much faster than the dial up from years past. Thought many people still lack internet service, there are not many places, that have some infrastructure to support communities, that don't provide some type of internet service. From small towns in the southwestern United States to Canada, there is internet service available for all; or at least the vast majority of people.

As the internet continues to become more integrated in our daily lives, the demand has cause prices to steadily decrease. The prices for broadband internet services are at the high, end of the spectrum but dsl and dial-up services, at the middle and lower end of the spectrum, respectively. There's no more excuses .... get connected today.

In this Texas heat, I need to save as much money on energy costs as I can. It has been so hot lately, that just walking from you house to your car on the street causes you to sweat profusely. I need to start running out to my car and starting the air conditioning up before I hop in it, sort of like starting your car in the cold. It has been so hot that my dog refuses to stay outside. I will put him out and after he goes to the bathroom he starts whining to come in. He just can’t stand the heat. I guess he is wearing a fur coat in the dead of summer, but he has been shedding so much because of the heat it gets all over the house! I used to love summer, but now I think I am much more of a fall person. I just can’t wait until we get cooler weather here in Texas!

There are so many different types of media files that we encounter in our 'digital world'. Just think of all the different audio file types, alone. There are so many audio file types, some more popular than others, that it is very useful to have an audio converter to get your audio files in the formats you need them to be in.

If your a person that likes to create YouTube videos or spice up your videos, it is also good to have some software that can extract the audio from various video files, convert them to a usable file type and save them. Summer Activities and your Photo Memories!

It's the summer time and though it is slowly coming to an end it is still time to get in your final vacations, family reunions, trips to amusement parks, or the many other summer-time activities we love to take part in. No summer activity is complete without getting some pictures to immortalize the experience.

Most people have cameras on their mobile devices, but to get great quality pictures, under a variety of situations, a digital camera is still the best way to go. In several tests, the digital camera's color and exposure handling are consistently more pleasant than the cell phone, amoung other things. If you dont own one, get a digital camera and improve the quality of your photographs.

So, you have your bags packed, ready to go... You have your digital camera and your ready for some summer activity. Don't forget the accessories you will need to capture and preserve your summer memories. First, consider your digital camera battery needs. Does your camera use special batteries or standard batteries. Whatever the type, you will need to have extra batteries. Even if you use rechargeable batteries, it is a good idea to have at least one extra set on hand so you can keep taking pictures while one set is recharging. Digital cameras tend to use batteries more quickly than mobile devices because of features like the flash, large resolution images, digital zooming, recording video, etc. Second, be sure you have several memory cards. You need as much memory as you can reasonably get, to be sure you can take large resolution pictures, get some video clips and do it all without constantly switching memory cards. Memory cards come in a variety of capacities so get the largest capacity that your camera can accept and have 1-2 back-up cards. Nurses have been intimately involved with technology in patient care for decades. From IV therapy in the post war years, to the advent of the ICU in the early sixties, to the current use of compact digital point-of-care devices, nurses have become accustomed to and experienced in using technology adapted from many arenas - space travel, warfare, and the medical arts – for the provision of patient care. I love biking. With gas prices you may see more of these. You have probably seen a rise in scooters on the road-ways. Now we can get from point A to point B on an electric bicycle.

A designer from Ventura, California, recently came up with his very own home-built electric bicycle that will come with not one, but three power modes. This enables the rider to select from pedal-assist, pure electric motor or standard biking whenever he/she is on the road.

Known as the eCortina v2, this electric bicycle that could will run on a 48 volt lithium polymer battery system, where it ought to deliver up to 15 miles of range although Prince, the inventor, hopes to throw in even more batteries so that the range can be further extended to 23 miles.

It wasn’t that long ago that I was graduating school wondering what in the world I was going to do with a design degree. There’s not a lot of openings out there right now for people in my industry and I found that out the hard way when I started interviewing for positions. Even with my stellar educational record and portfolio I couldn’t get so much as an internship! Since I live in NYC I don’t exactly have a lot of flexibility when it comes to rent and expenses so I got online and started selling my stuff there. This is a funny show that is about melodramatic Canadian teenagers. People who are into these sorts of shows are in heaven when watching Degrassi. This show is way better than even they give it credit for being on any given day. It has a strong focus on characters that allows it to attract an audience that includes more than just the target demographic of young teen girls who like to dream about dating the hunky guys on the show.

The best cameo in the history of Degrassi came when Kevin Smith brought his fat butt out of the kitchen and onto the set to provide a three-part cameo appearance with his best friend Jason Mewes by his side. This cameo was so amazing because Ken Smith is a true fan of the show. It was actually completely his idea to appear. He even wrote all of the lines that he delivered on the program. He says that he loved all of the different versions of Degrassi. There has been the original Degrassi, the Junior High version of Degrassi, and the Next Generation version. Most people in the United States have never even heard of this show that spawned the blockbuster rap career of Drake.
