There are some set of sites which we will usually visit. They probably would have become a part of our daily routine. For example checking emails, staying connected with friends via social networks, spending leisure time on video sharing sites.

If you had been using a computer for a while you would have noticed that using keyboard shortcuts instead of using mouse to perform operation is immensely easy and time saving. Hence the reason most of the software come with built in shortcut to help us speed up things. Some keyboards have hardware keys to control volume, brightness and other system setting but how about keys to open sites you visit frequently?

YouTube is one of the sites we hook on to for hours watching our favorite videos. This is probably one among the many sites we turn to when we are bored and want to spent some leisure time. Songs, movies, live telecast, TV serials, educational videos, whatsoever, name it you have it on YouTube.

Watching video without lag or interruption is what everyone of us want. Constant delay or break while watching something interesting spoils the whole experience. People with good broadband speed need not worry about this problem but some us might have a very slow internet connection and still wish to have the same experience. Don’t we?

What most of us usually do is , pause and allow the entire video to buffer after which we play and watch it in seam-less manner. But of-late there are many users raising concerns in various forums that they are not able to do this after the recent launch of new version of YouTube.

So below is the solution to address the problem of YouTube videos not buffering fully when it is paused or when in full-screen mode, re buffering videos again on replay and on seeking to new time. Lets see how to address this problem in Firefox and Chrome browser.

Why YouTube Stops Buffering Video Fully when it is Paused?

The key to fix this problem is in managing your browser Cache. Entirely used up cache is probably the culprit of this problem.

1. Go to the video you wish to watch on YouTube.

2. Pause the video.

3. Go to Tools-> Options-> Advanced and click on Network tab.

4. Under Cache Web Content click Clear Now button. Also check the option of override automatic cache management and set the value to say about 350. And finally click OK.

5. Now we need to clear all cookies related to YouTube. Go to Tools-> Options-> Privacy. Click on remove individual cookies link.

6. In the popup that appears youtube in the search. Click on Remove All Cookies. Now click close then OK.

7. Go to the video. Don’t reload the page. Click on the Gear icon in the play. Select any resolution. Again click on the icon and reselect the resolution it was in previously.

8. Now leave it as it is. You should see video is now smoothly being buffered. Repeat the above step whenever you face the same problem.

Google Chrome Users:

1. Go to the video you wish to watch on YouTube and pause it.

2. Press CTRL + SHIFT + DELETE. In the popup select the beginning of time from drop down and check empty the cache alone. Now click clear browsing data.

3. Now type chrome://settings/cookies in the address bar and hit enter.

4. Type the youtube in search. And click Remove All and close the window popup.

5. Follow step 7 & 8 mentioned before section.

Alternative Solutions:

[Updated on 25-May-2013]

Since few users have mentioned that above trick does not work at times here are some alternative workarounds.

1. This trick works better in Firefox. For better results follow step 1 to 6 under Firefox Users then do the following.

– Go to the concerned video.
– Right click on the video and select Pop Out.
– Video will be opened in a new window. Pause the video and wait for sometime.
– You should be seeing the buffering without any interruption.

This method works most of the time for me.

2. You can try toggling between different resolutions and then change the size of the player by clicking on the rectangle symbol at the right bottom. This seems to work for some users.

This is an one time process.



• Select Tools-> Script Editor. Then Run-> AUTHORIZE. In the popup that appears click Authorize.



• Now you will be taken to the Twitter app which you created in Step 1. Authorize the app by logging in with your Twitter credentials.

Step 3: How to use the Application

• All the configurations are complete now. Let’s now start scheduling the tweets.
• Go to the Spreadsheet. Enter the Tweet text(Only 140 characters) in column B and enter Time in column C in 24 hours format like MM/DD/YYYY HH:MM. Eg., 3/30/2013 15:31. Enter twitter handle of the person whom you want to address in column A it’s optional though, whereas Tweet text and Time are mandatory.
• Once you are done. Select Tweet Scheduler-> Schedule Tweets Now. All your Tweets will be scheduled as per the time you have given and will automatically be Tweeted from your profile at appropriate time.
• Note: Currently you can schedule up to 20 tweets per app.

Gmail is undeniably one the most widely used web-mails worldwide. Though it has a lot of features it can boast off, it does lack some functionality that many users would love to have. For example ability to sort email by sender, date etc., are missing.

One such most requested feature in Gmail is read-receipt. It’s currently available but only to Google Apps account holders (Business, Education, and Government).

Consider a scenario: You have bought a product online for which you have been charged additional. You have sent out an email to concerned vendor asking for refund of your extra charges. So, how would you know that they have received/opened your email?

Solution: Simple answer is to use read receipt.

Currently there are many third-party email tracking tools that lets you get this feature in your Gmail account. But the question of privacy always comes to mind. Though it’s available in-built in Google Apps Gmail account, what about the Gmail users? How would they use this feature?

Introducing Gmail Read Receipt Notifier:

With this in mind I have come up with a tool that lets you create your own email tracking system which will send you notifications when someone has read your email. This tool can be used by any Gmail user or non-Google Apps account holder for their own purpose. The data you provide will entirely be private to your account. Below are instructions on how to get started.

Get Read Receipt Notification for your Emails in Gmail with Google Docs

Step 1: Installing and Setting up the Application

• Log-in to your Google Docs account.
• Now click here to make copy of Gmail Read Receipt Notifier app. Click Yes, make a copy.
• Wait for few seconds for the menu Read Receipt to appear next to Help. Select Authorize App from it. Now click OK in the popup and finally click close.
• Select Tools-> Script Editor.
• Now from select File -> Manage Versions, Click save new version and press OK.
• Publishing your app: Select Publish -> Deploy as web app. Under Who has access to the app select Anyone, even anonymous.

Step 2: How to Use the Application

• Start composing your email.
• Enter recipient email at cell B4, enter subject at B6.
• Enter a unique key at B8.

Tips: Unique Key must be alphanumeric, it should be unique for each email you send out. You will be notified via a pop up in-case duplication is found. Example could be bobemail1. In this example the key implies that I am sending my first email to bob. On sending next email you could use it as bobemail2 and so on.

• Enter body at cell B10:B26.

Tip: To enter new line (enter) in the body press CTRL + ENTER

• Once you are done. Select Read Receipt -> Send. For the first time alone you will be prompted for your Gmail ID. Enter a valid ID. This will not be known to anyone except you. So you need not worry about it.
• Again select send from Read Receipt menu. Your email would be sent.
• Now on whenever this email has been read by someone you will receive an email alert to your Gmail ID with the time-stamp on when it was read.

How to test it out?

• Send an email to someone using this tool.
• Now log-in to recipient email account from a new browser. E.g. Use Firefox in-case you used Google Chrome/Internet Explorer to send out that email.
• Open the received email.
• You should get an alert in your Gmail inbox stating that the email was read like the above screenshot

But in order to get hold of the information you have to be online and logged into your account. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to keep you automatically notified via alerts? It does offer emails alerts but you have to create RSS feed and use Google Alerts to achieve it as SMS alerts are not supported.

There are lots of other services/tools that lets you get notification of Stock prices on your mobile but most of them charge for that. So here is a tool which will let you get free Stock price alerts via SMS from Google Finance itself. It’s capable of monitoring three different companies at a given time and will send you SMS notifications to your mobile every 1 hour. The limit of only three companies at maximum is because of the message length restriction imposed by Google. Step 1: Configure your Google Calendar to set SMS as default reminder channel

Step 2: Setup of the Project on your Google Drive account

1. Log in to your Google Drive account.

2. Open this Google Finance Free Stock Price Alerts project.

3. Make a copy of it by selecting File-> Make a copy.

4. Grant access by selecting Run-> AUTHORIZE. Now click the authorize button from the pop up then click Grant access and finally press close.

5. Select File-> Manage Versions. Then click save new version and press OK.

6. Now select Publish-> Deploy as web app and click Deploy. The app is ready now. Copy the generated URL and paste it in the address bar and hit enter. You can bookmark it for easy access.

Usage Instructions:

- This tool is capable of monitoring three Stock Symbols at a time.

- Finding Stock symbols: You can find symbol of any company of your interest by visiting Google Finance and searching with company name. Copy that symbol and paste into the tool.

Gmail offers us nearly 10 GB of free storage for our inbox. It might look sufficient enough but if you are an active user, over a period of time you very well might end up using all of the available space. Most of the time the culprit would be bulky attachments that sits in your inbox occupying unwanted memory.

What to do in such a situation?

You can buy extra storage from Google or other alternative would be to track down those email message containing large attachments and delete them. Gmail does offer an undocumented operator called “SIZE” which you can use to find bulky emails. EG: SIZE:1MB. After which you can select all those messages and trash them to reclaim space.

But there might be situations where you actually don’t want to delete the original email chain because they may contain valuable information which you prefer to retain but wish to trash the attachments alone or create a backup of them and remove it from the original message to save space. This feature is currently not available in Gmail but some possible solutions are to use desktop email clients, tools to set up account locally via IMAP and then manually do the process of deleting big attachments.

So here is an alternative I came up with that does not require any desktop software and the process is entirely automated. In this article we are going to discuss how to use Google Docs to delete only attachments in Gmail without deleting original messages.

How Does this Work?

1. You specify the size of the emails to be found in Megabyte.

2. All emails with that or above that size are retrieved and shown.

3. On select of delete all, those emails are processed.

4. All attachments in the message are backed up in your Google Drive under the folder name Gmail_Attachments. So they will remain safe there you can refer them whenever needed.

5. Copy of email body is created and it is sent as a new email to your account from your own ID.

So is the time stamp and sender details of original message lost?

No. They are fetched and appended to the new email copy. Details like date, from, to, cc are retained.

6. Finally original email along with the attachments are trashed.

Delete Attachments Only in Gmail without Deleting Emails with Google Docs

1. First log-in to your Google Docs account.

2. Make copy of the spreadsheet by clicking here. Then click Yes, make a copy.

3. Wait for sometime for the menu Strip Email Attachments to appear just next to help menu.

4. Now mention the size in cell D4 and select Load Emails from the menu. Click OK in authorization popup then click on Grant access followed up by close. Again select load emails and wait for sometime. All email of that size and above it will be fetched and displayed.

5. Once it’s done,select delete attachments from the menu. That’s it. Now sit back and wait for sometime while all messages are processed. If everything went well you will see success in status column. You will also be constantly updated with ongoing process status via messages at right bottom of your screen.

6. Finally check your inbox if you have got all the emails with just body sans the attachments and check Google Drive to see if all your files are there. Trash folder will contain all the delete messages.

Web is meant to be open. It’s one amazing place where you can find tons of information with just few clicks. Be it from rocket science to cookery what not is available to us via the Internet. It has almost become a teacher to us.

But since ages there has always been some sort of a censorship on the internet by your country, ISP, company and organizations. It is understandable that those restrictions are in place for some arguable, justifiable reasons. But it sometimes gets way too far which isn’t acceptable. For example there happened an incident where court in India ordered ISP’s to block few sites hosted on Blogspot but they end up blocking the entire Blogspot domain.

We do face similar situation even in workplaces. Blocking social networking sites, web mail for better productivity is justified but why block blogs?! At the moment one can argue saying that blogs are best source of information with abundant contents in it. Blogspot and WordPress blog are the worst victims of it. Most corporate, school web filters block sites hosted on it. Not all can afford self hosted sites. At the end of the day we users are unable to access contents that could have made all that difference.

Some solution would be to use proxy servers but in most cases they are actively blocked so it’s out of the equation. Tunneling the traffic through a secure VPN connection is the best solution that worked for me. But it does require a VPN account and client software on your machine. So I thought of coming with a simpler solution that lets you access blocked contents, sites at workplace, school via Google Docs.

What is the Solution?

Introducing Google Docs(GD) Fetch URL Tool that sends you the full length screenshot of the webpage remotely via an email. All you need to do is to send an email to your Gmail account mentioning the blocked URL. You will get back an email containing screenshot of the page. So, why a tool for this. Can’t we directly use online screen capture tools for this? As far as I tested out most of the tools pass the URL in address as query string to generate the screenshot because of which it is instantly blocked by filters whenever the request is made. But since this tool processes your request on server side(Google Doc servers) it is not blocked. It should just work fine unless there is an email filter in place that block emails based on keywords.

Access Site, Content Blocked by Web Filters using Google Docs as Proxy

1. Login to Google Docs.

2. Click here to make a copy of the GD Fetch URL sheet. Click Yes, make a copy.

3. Wait for few seconds for the menu GD Fetch URL to appear next to help menu.

4. Select Start Service. Click OK, click Grant access in the big authorization notification that comes up. Finally press the close button. Once again select start service from the menu. Now it’s up and running.

5. Preferably complete the above steps from your home PC because Google Docs might be blocked as well. Now on to access blocked URL’s, send an email to your Gmail account which you used to login into Google Docs from any mail account for example it could be your company id. I.e. Send from name@company.com to name@gmail.com with subject in the below format, body can be empty.

Note: It is mandatory that you provide full address including http or https.

6. Wait for sometime. You will be getting an email containing screenshot of the page to the mail id from which you sent request. I.e: name@company.com

7. When you want to turn off the service, select Stop Service from the menu.

Note: This tool was tested against Websense.

2. Select File-> Share. Add all people with whom you want to share the document, select can edit from the drop down and click on share & save.

3. Now select range of cells or columns which you want to protect from being edited.

4. From menu select Data-> Named and protected ranges.

5. Give a name then check the protect option and click save.

6. In the pop up which comes up you can configure the access levels. In our sample case only Principal should be allowed to edit not the students. So select can edit for Principal and can view for students. Finally click save changes. You are done now!

Note: When someone tries to modify a protected range of cells they would get a Oops error message as shown in first screen-cap.
