Garlic -- a secret weapon against hypertension?

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease and renal failure. Around 1 billion people globally suffer from high blood pressure.

Australian scientists have found that a dietary supplement may help people who can't control their blood pressure with standard drugs.

The secret weapon is garlic, according to a study published in the scientific journal Maturitas.

In a 12-week trial involving 50 patients, Dr Karen Ried and a team of colleagues at the University of Adelaide discovered that those who took four capsules a day of a supplement called aged garlic extract had blood pressure around 10mmHg lower than a group given a placebo.

The effect was only found in those who had a so-called systolic blood pressure of at least 140 -- the usual cut-off value for high blood pressure -- at the outset of the study.

Garlic taken in any other way, whether raw, fresh or in powdered form, doesn't have the same effect and when you cook fresh garlic the ingredient which is responsible for reducing blood pressure disappears.

Garlic has long been thought to be good for the heart, and traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine practitioners have been promoting the benefits of garlic as a preventative of high blood pressure for centuries.

She said ,the important point to make is that aged garlic extract as a supplement is the secret weapon for blood pressure."

But Ried said their research was the first to assess the impact of aged garlic extract, adding that it was evaluated as an additional treatment to other high blood pressure medication -- for instance beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors.

During this period, the public no longer ignore distorted beliefs about the garlic itself.But a miracle is due to appear in a garlic plant which can be a remedy for a variety of chronic diseases. Fastest and Efficient Detecting Cancer Cells.

BRITISH scientists have found a new and faster way of studying a crucial class of cancer cells, called cancer stem cell, which they say should speed up work on developing drugs against them.

The researchers from Oxford University developed a way of obtaining samples rich in cancer stem cells from bowel cancer cell lines and keeping them in a lab - a method which allows cells to be repeatedly tested against possible drug treatments.

Working with cell lines is a much more convenient way to study these cells than using samples taken from human patients or using animal models

We can now evaluate anti-cancer drugs better to see whether they attack cancer stem cells. If you don't attack these cells, the cancer can grow out again.

Allowing for repeatable, high-speed screens of drugs, as well as basic studies on the nature of cancer stem cells and their role in producing tumours. 'In the long term, it should allow but with the new technique, work on stem cells could be far quicker and more productive, the development of more useful, safe and specific drugs targeting cancer stem cells,' said Trevor Yeung of the university's Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, who also worked on the study.

Childhood cancer DNA project

WASHINGTON - RESEARCHERS announced a new project call childhood cancer DNA project. This project try to discover genes in childhood tumors previously unknown causes of cancer.

The research is to help tailor treatments for children to spare them radiation and chemotherapy. Our belief and our expectation is that pediatric cancer is going to have different genetic alterations than adult cancers,' Dr Shapiro said dean of Washington University School of Medicine.

The research is collaboration between St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis.

Dr Shapiro said the team will be able to see how different children fared on different treatments, and look for changes in DNA that might be used to explain these differences. That, in turn, may lead to genetic tests that can guide doctors to the best treatments for their young patients, and may in the longer run help in developing better treatments for childhood cancer.

The study, projected to cost US$65 million (S$91 million) over three years, will start with 600 childhood cancer patients. 'We are on the threshold of a revolution in our understanding of the origins of cancer,' Dr William Evans, St Jude director and chief executive officer, said in a statement. 'For the first time in history, we have the tools to identify all of the genetic abnormalities that turn a white blood cell into a leukemia cell or a brain cell into a brain tumor.'

A lack of sleep among youngsters may trigger depression and suicidal thoughts, according to the study by the Columbia University Medical Center.

Going to bed early is key to getting enough sleep and helping adolescents feel on top of the world, a new study reported.

Inadequate sleep is a risk factor for depression, working with other risk and protective factors through multiple possible causal pathways to the development of this mood disorder.

Adequate quality sleep could therefore be a preventative measure against depression and a treatment for depression.

Less sleep will cause FAT.

Enough sleep at night can prevent diabetes up to five times. Said a professor at the University of Buffalo, New York, Lisa Rafalson, the study proves there is a clear linkage between the disease and lack of sleep, especially among those who have aged.

A study involving adult 18.000 issued last month by the Organization of Obesity Research North America found that those who enjoy sleeping about four hours yesterday, is 73 percent easier for obese or overweight than those who slept seven to nine hours long.
Latest study released today also found similar results when the research involves over 1.024 volunteers.

Of the total, 14.9 percent of respondents who sleep only five hours recorded ghrelin hormone that increases appetite.
Those who sleep less also recorded a decrease leptin hormone that causes a person to feel satiated.
In the study, researchers found that the optimum level for sleep control weight is the average of 7.7 hours.
"Actions to reduce time to sleep just makes increased appetite and excessive eating."

Cutting through solid steel with flaming bacon certainly has its appeal, but for large-scale industrial processes, the Fraunhofer institute thinks electromagnetic pulses may work better than the other white heat. Case in point: their new electromagnetic pulse (EMP) device that cuts through steel faster than a laser, and cheaper than a machine tool.

The device uses a mixture of capacitors and coils to create a directed magnetic field that works like a paper-hole puncher. The shaped magnetic field pounds steel with 50,763 pounds per square inch, or three times the pressure at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. At that power, the blast can punch a hole through steel seven times faster than the lasers currently used to do the same job.

To protect passengers in case of a collision, most car manufacturers craft the car body out of some of the toughest steel available. Unfortunately, the same toughness that makes the car so safe also makes the body very difficult to alter during construction. To create holes for wiring, car companies use either mechanical tools, which wear out and add an additional step to remove the subsequent burr, or lasers, which require a lot of energy and money. The Fraunhofer EMP device doesn't have any of those drawbacks, while retaining most of the advantages.

Additionally, the process leaves no burr or hanging metal, eliminating expensive finishing steps in the assembly process. And with no moving parts, the machine experiences far less wear than mechanical tools.

The EMP device isn't widely available yet, as the company perfects how to manufacture coils in a wide range of different shapes. But if anyone needs to punch a hole into some tough steel, I think you might want to give Germany a ring.

The study of natural health endorses a healthy diet of organic whole grain, vegetables, and fruits. We learn in the study of herbs that the medicinal values are in the life force (energies) of the mineral, or plant, not their isolated chemicals. We learn that eating close to the earth will make us healthier. We learn that the secret to a healthy, long life is holistic, the marriage of spirit, minds, and body.

Nature is the source of healing in the eyes of natural healers. We believe that everything needed to lead happy and healthy lives is provided for us by nature in unaltered forms. We question the motives of those who disagree with that perception. On the other hand those who disagree are also a part of nature; from their viewpoint nature's plan is to endow us with the mind power to alter the makeup of nature, thereby enhancing the quality of our existence with the application of that knowledge.

That is the dichotomy in the search for truth. The art of mankind is to discover, and because of that, we are developing an intimate understanding of the macro and microcosm of the material universe. The scientific minds of the world are ever experimenting to discover new combinations to activate. In the recent past, particularly the past three hundred years, science's pursuit is reducing the material world into smaller and smaller particles. Science now applies new innovation that is altering and changing the very nature of nature.

In the science of bio-technology they alter plants, animals, and humans at the genetic level of creation. The perceived good in doing that is to produce perfect humans, animals, and plants. Humans and animals that have propensity for specific disease can be altered in DNA. Recombinant biological technology makes it possible to clone, alter, and change both simple and complex life forms. DNA can be changed to change the expression of a plant or animal. These altered expressions of life can create new medicines, foods, animals, and even human beings making man the ruler of creation.

"Who would define perfect?" The idea of delegating that power into the hands of any man, company, or country poses a danger, even more powerful than our most sophisticated weapons. History demonstrates that when man becomes the director of any endeavor, the motive to profit is likely to bring effects that are not always in the best interest of mankind or our friends in nature.
