Mastering the Art of Keyword Optimization and On-Page SEO

If you haven’t noticed this already, I’m a huge fan of search engine optimization. Why? Well first of all search engine traffic is the most targeted traffic you can generate to your website, and secondly it’s 100% free.

When you’re trying to rank in search engines it’s vital that you choose a specific keyword or keyphrase for which you want to get rankings. Every website you build, every page or blog post you publish must have a target keyword.

The first step in finding the keyword or keyphrase for which you want to rank is to perform a thorough keyword research.

Once you’ve found the keyword you want to target, the next step of the process is to make the webpage which will target the keyword as relevant as possible for your chosen term. This is called on-page keyword optimization and it’s the only part of SEO you will have full control of.

In this post I’m going to show you how you can optimize your pages for a target keyword.

But first let me show you some blog posts I published that climbed up the search rankings simply because of the proper keyword targeting:

So both of these blog posts got over 1000 words and they both have a video embedded in them. The video part is something I noticed while I was doing searches for my keywords on Google and what I discovered is that posts which contained videos got higher rankings over time. I don’t think it’s a rule but it’s one of the similarities I discovered throughout my high ranking posts.

Okay, now let’s take a look at the keyword targeting process.

Keyword Optimization Overview

Keyword optimization is all about including your target keywords in specific parts of your webpage so that Google and other search engines will consider your page relevant for that particular keyword or keyphrase.

Page URL

The URL of your page is the first location where you want to insert your target keyword. I suggest you keep the URL as short as possible. Shorter URLs are easier to remember and more likely to be copy/pasted and shared.

One other things is to position your keyword as close as you can to the root domain. For example ‘www.yoursite.com/target-keyword‘ is way better than ‘www.yoursite.com/category/target-keyword‘.

Make sure that the permalink settings on your WordPress blog is set to ‘Custom Structure’, this way when you’ve written in the title of your blog post inside the text editor WordPress will automatically create a permalink that is identical to the title. I suggest you take time to manually edit the permalink and remove unnecessary filler words like ‘the’, ‘to’,'is’,'you’, so that the permalink contains only the target keyphrase.

The Title

The keywords with the most SEO value are the ones that appear in the title of your page. I always try to come up with headlines where the keyword is positioned right at the beginning of the title. Of course this is not always the case.

The title of you page is the bold text which appears in search engine results when you’re searching for a particular term.

If you want to rank for a specific keyword then it should definitely be in your title tag.

The Meta Description

The meta description is a short paragraph which describes what your page is about. The meta description shows up in search engine results right under the title of your page.

It’s a good idea to include your target keyword and a related keyphrase in it. Although the meta description does not affect your rankings it can definitely help the click-through rate.

All you need to do is to make sure that each page or blog post has a unique and compelling meta description.

The Meta Keyword Tag

It’s a well known fact that top search engines like Google and Bing completely ignore the keywords tag. I personally stopped using this tag on all of my websites simply because it holds no SEO value, and more than that it can giveaway valuable information to your competitors.

The H1 Heading

The H1 tag is the headline of your blog post or page. If you’re using WordPress, the H1 tag is most likely to be identical with the title tag of your page.

However, using a SEO plugin like All In One SEO or in my case the Genesis Framework(affiliate link) allows you to create a H1 tag that is different from your title tag.

This way you can optimize the title tag for your chosen keyword and also create a compelling headline which attracts the visitors to your blog to click on it.

The H2/H3/H4 Headings

These are the subheadings of your page or your blog post. You should include your target keyword at least in one of these subheadings. Also you can use related terms that are relevant for your target keyword.

Even if you don’t include your target keyword in these headings, using them will allow you to break your posts into easy to digest paragraphs, definitely making them more scannable for your readers, improving the overall user experience.

The Body Text

Your target keyword along with related keywords should be spread across the body of your blog post.

My blog posts and pages have an average keyword density of slightly less than 1%. This also counting the keywords from the title, H1, H2 and other headings I use to structure my page.

It’s also very important that you use related terms and not only your target keyword. For example if you were targeting the keyword ‘SEO‘ a related term is ‘search engine optimization‘ which is basically the same thing.

One other thing I would like to mention here is that you should aim to include your target keyword in the beginning paragraph of your blog post or webpage.

Bold and Italic Usage

You should use your keyword in ‘bold‘ at least once within your page. The same thing goes for ‘italic‘.

Using these formatting tags for your target keywords along with other related terms will make your page more relevant for those keywords in the eyes of search engines.

Make sure you don’t get carried away with this, and as with every keyword optimization tactic you should always put the reader first.

The Image Filename

The filename of your image should look like this: ‘target-keyword.png’.

This will allow you to tap into image search traffic, and here is where the filename of your image holds real value.

Always make sure that when you’re downloading an image from Flickr or other image sharing sites, and you want to use it on your webpage to rename it so that it includes your target keyword.

The Image Alt Attribute

The alt attribute or the alt tag of your images is the only way to tell search engines what that image is about. As with the image filename the alt tag should contain the target keyword or a variation of that keyword.

Make sure you keep your image alt tag to 3 or 4 words and stay away from keyword stuffing.

The alt tag holds a lot of SEO value, that’s why I recommend you use images in all of your blog posts and pages.

Final Note on Keyword Optimization

There is one thing which I think is very important and I would like to point out, keyword optimization and keyword stuffing are to completely different things.

Always aim to use your target keyword only as much as it makes sense to use it.

You should always keep in mind user experience when optimizing your pages and blog posts.

The Minimalist Guide to Making Money Online

Making money online, for most people means escaping their 9 to 5 job, working from the comfort of their own home and ultimately the freedom of location.

People’s desire for earning an online income is very evident, you will notice this by doing a simple Google search.

But the fact is that the majority of people are scared about starting an online business. They think about the money they need to invest, the technical know-how, the time it takes to earn money and a lot of other reasons which are just too many to mention right now.

In this post, which is called “The Minimalist Guide to Making Money Online” for a reason I’m going to share with you a simple way to earn extra money online. But before I get into the meat of this post I just want to mention that this isn’t something new or some “loop-hole”, “guru secret” or any other sort of hyped up guide.

Why minimalist? Because:

You don’t need a website.
You don’t need to sell anything.
You don’t need an email list.
You don’t need an Adsense account.
You don’t need to spend 1 cent.

And the best part is that it’s residual income or passive income or whatever you want to call it.

So what am I talking about here?

Ad revenue sharing websites.

If you’ve never heard about revenue sharing sites before, here is a simple explanation.

They’re basically article directories, for which you can write articles on almost any topic. They place Adsense ads on your live article pages for which you will receive a share of the earnings those ad blocks generate.

Although most revenue sharing sites require you to have an approved Adsense account, I’ve been doing some research and found one who will give you a 75% cut and you don’t even need to have an Adsense account approved. You may have heard about this website before, it’s called InfoBarrel.

All you need to do is to write articles.

Sounds pretty good, right?

Getting started

First thing, you will have to sign up for an account on InfoBarrel, don’t worry it’s free. As I said earlier you won’t have to spend one dime to make money this way.

Once you’ve got your account set up and you’ve completed your profile it’s time to figure out what you should write about.

Although, before you start writing articles it would be a good idea to read InfoBarrel’s author guidelines, just to make sure you aren’t breaking any rules which might get your account suspended or your article submissions denied.

When it comes to creating content a lot of people find it really hard to come up with topics on which they can write articles about.

So I’m going to give you a few suggestions on how to find good topics to write about.

1. Google Trends

Google Trends hot searches is where you will find which are the most searched topics on Google on a daily basis. You can use these topics as a base for your articles. Mostly you’ll see searches on celebrity gossip, tech, sports, gaming and breaking news, which are all topics that people will always be interested in.

2. List Posts

List posts are always a good choice for articles, they’re also very easy to write. Top 10 posts are known for their viral nature and the possibilities are endless. Think about it, Top 10 Movies – Scary Movies – Thrillers… You can easily come up with at least a dozen top 10 lists in less than 5 minutes.

The best way to find out what people are looking for is to do a little bit of keyword research. You can use Google’s keyword research tool which is free.

Just put “top 10″ without the quotation marks in the keyword field and tick the box that says “Only show ideas closely related to my search terms”, this way Google will only show you the searched keyphrases that have your keyword in them. Also make sure that the match type is set to [Exact].

3. InfoBarrel’s Editorial Calendar

At the start of each month the InfoBarrel admins post an article with the editorial calendar for the coming month. Here you’ll be able to find 30 article topics you can write on with the possibility of getting your article featured on the home page.

4. Stick to what’s working

You’ve probably heard about the 80/20 rule, which states that 20% of your work generates 80% of the results.

The same rule can be applied to writing articles. The fact is 20% of your articles will probably generate 80% of your earnings.

Once you’ve written a couple of articles on different topics check your stats to see which articles are getting more views, more social shares, more ad clicks and stick to those topics.

Getting traffic to your articles

The traffic your articles will generate is what will eventually determine how much money you’ll earn.

Now, since I’m a big fan of SEO and search engine traffic my first suggestion is to choose a target keyword for each of your articles, and optimize your article for your chosen keyword or keyphrase.

I’ve written a very easy-to-follow post on keyword optimization, it would be a good idea if you would give it a quick once-over.

Another tip for drawing attention to your articles is to make use of InfoBarrel’s multimedia features. This means adding images and video to your articles.

If you’re writing articles on travelling you also have the possibility to add maps to your articles, to showcase different locations that you’ve mentioned within the article.

One other thing that can generate extra visitors is interlinking your articles. If you have multiple articles on similar topics, always have a link that points from one to the other. The main benefit of interlinking is the link juice which will be flowing through your articles. With time your article pages will get a higher page rank and higher rankings in search engines.

3 Ways you can make money

Evasi0n iOS 6 Jailbreak Crashes Weather App On iPhone And Reveals It On iPad [Jailbreak]

Weird.
The highly anticipated Evasion jailbreak was released earlier today for all iOS 6 devices, including the iPhone 5. The release saw incredible success with over 100,000 downloads in the first 10 minutes of availability. As we said in our official guide to jailbreaking with Evasi0n, this really is one of the smoothest jailbreaks of all time.
But every jailbreak has its initial quirks, and the main issue with Evasi0n is how it affects Apple’s stock Weather app in iOS 6. On the iPhone, the app instantly crashes. However, the iPad is a different story. Apparently Apple has been hiding a Weather app in the iPad this whole time, and Evasi0n reveals it.
The iPhone problem is obviously a concern among many users who rely on the Weather app to.. well.. check the weather. I tried opening it on my newly-jailbroken iPhone 5, and it immediately crashed. Welp.
Evad3r hacker extraordinaire pod2g tweeted that his team is aware of the Weather app issue, and a patch will soon be available for everyone to install in Cydia.
After jailbreaking an iPad with Evasi0n, you may notice an additional icon next to Cydia on your Home screen. It’s an old Weather app Apple normally has hidden within a plist entry in iOS, according to MuscleNerd, another Evad3rs team member. For some reason, the iOS 6 jailbreak unhides it.
Unfortunately, this Weather app isn’t iPad-optimized. It’s an old, pixelated, iPhone-sized version that looks far from crisp on the iPad’s Retina display. What’s interesting is that Apple had it hidden there in the first place. Why don’t we have an iPad version of the Weather app?
Regardless of the reason for it being there, an inbound Cydia update should also get rid of the mysterious Weather app on jailbroken iPads.

Earlier this month, Apple began offering refurbished 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks with Retina Display via its online store starting at US$1869. Today, itadded the 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro to its lineup of refurbished offerings.

The machines start at $1439 for the 2.5 GHz i5 model with 128 GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, a $260 savings over the $1699 sticker price of a new unit. Apple's also offering the 2.5 GHz i5 model with 256 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM for $1699 ($300 off, normally $1999) and the 2.9 GHz i7 model with 512 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM for $2289 ($410 off, normally $2699). Shipping times for all three refurbished models run 1 to 3 days and, as usual, stock is limited.

Pinterest For iOS Now Lets You Edit Pins And Manage Comments

Pinterest for iOS has just pinned another “pinteresting” update.

Released in the App Store in May 2011, Pinterest is the official iOS app of the popular pinboard-style photo sharing website of the same name.

It was originally optimized for iPhone and iPod touch only. But in August last year, it gained native iPad compatibility through a major update, after which it was named as AppAdvice’s App of the Week.

As mentioned, Pinterest for iOS has received another update, which adds a couple of new features along with some stability improvements.

With the newly updated Pinterest app, you are now able to edit your pins. Just select any of your pins and tap the new edit button. You are then free to change the pin’s description, move the pin to a different board, or delete the pin entirely.

Also, you are now able to manage comments in the app. This means that you can delete any comments made on your pins, whether by you or by other users. Additionally, you can delete the comments you’ve made on others’ pins.

The newly updated app also includes improved scroll performance and some bug fixes.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, Pinterest for iOS is available in the App Store for free.

Apple looking into "Location-Based Emergency Information" app for travelers

I'm an American, but I live in the United Kingdom and travel frequently to foreign countries in Europe. If there's one piece of technology that has most benefited the international traveler in the last five years it's been the iPhone. Having a personal computer in your pocket that lets you interact with all facets of your life from anywhere you are is a godsend. That's not even to mention the thousands of apps aimed at international travels that make exploring cities, translating words and languages, and getting you from the train station or airport to your hotel in one piece as easy as tapping a button. Since the iPhone is such an indispensable piece of travel kit, I'm especially excited to see that Apple has begun work on building a location-based emergency information app.

AppleInsider found the patent continuation, published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, on Thursday. Titled "Location-Based Emergency Information" the patent continuation notes that for the international traveler the process of gathering emergency services information for a foreign local can be both time consuming and confusing. The time consumption and confusion often leads many travelers to not even look into emergency services information until a problem arises -- causing a potentially fatal delay. From the filing:

"When a person travels abroad, emergencies can occur. For example, the person can become injured in an accident, be a victim of a crime, or lose their travel documents. In those situations, having knowledge of contact information for local emergency services or the pertinent consular services can be beneficial."

The patent continuation describes a location-aware "Emergency" app that would offer international travelers quick access to local police, fire or medical assistance. AppleInsider points to one illustration in the patent that shows the Emergency app with a drawer that pulls out and asks the user to select an icon for which local emergency service they would like to contact. The site also speculates that the Emergency app would be useful in a user's home country as well. For example, in the US the app could direct the user to alternate assistance numbers (like 311) instead of dialing 911 for situations that are not true emergencies.

However, there's no hint that Apple's Emergency app will see the light of day any time soon, if ever. Apple holds thousands of patents for products and services which never make it into consumers' hands. This is one patent, however, that could potentially save lives, so I hope we will see it in the App Store eventually.

The Design

Certainly, the BlackBerry Z10 has the air of an iPhone. It has no keyboard and a full touch screen.  The shape certainly resembles an iPhone.  The rounded corners and flat back, make it distinctly reminiscent of the iPhone 5, especially the iPhone 5 in black.

It's a very attractive phone.  It looks premium and has excellent built quality.  The BlackBerry emblem on the back looks very nice.  It is certainly not the most imaginative phone in the world and follows much of the design principle that iPhone have taken so far. However, it is enough to get BlackBerry lovers excited  and will look great when you bring it out in the board room.

The phone includes an HMDI and microUSB port, as well as a microSD card slot in the back with the battery.  The design comes in a nice matte finish and looks classic.  It feels nice and comfortable in the hand.  It has plenty of grip to avoid it sliding from your hand and ending up a pile of rubble on the floor; not that it is fragile (it looks and feels strong).

Overall, the design and exterior features are very nice.  But BlackBerry seems to have played it quite safe with the design-I guess that’s not surprising considering the importance of the phone.  After all, they know that a phone very similar in looks to this sold 50 million in a quarter.

The Screen

The screen on the BlackBerry Z10 is slightly larger than the iPhone 5 at 4.2 inches.  It has a resolution of 720p and 335 pixels per inch.  The whites are pure and the viewing angles are impressive.  In many ways the display is awesome.  On top of this, it is extremely bright enabling a good viewing experience outside. Text, images and video looks great on the phone and when you start gesturing on the screen, you will find it’s responsive and snappy just the way it should be.

Overall

Overall the design and screen are a marked step forward on previous BlackBerry releases. BlackBerry has played it safe but have created a very attractive phone that is up to the job of streaming and browsing in terms of the display quality.

The phone overall is excellent.  The operating system does a good job, although at times, it seems a little counter intuitive and may take a while to learn, and there are a few gaps. Generally this is a terrific phone and signals a bounce back for BlackBerry.

Those that love BlackBerry can confidently pick-up this phone and take it from the store.  Those that are looking for a good functional business phone will also find in this BlackBerry phone an option that makes sense.

Every now and again there are two phones that are so similar that it's incredibly difficult to choose between them. Sure, two devices that retail at vastly different prices, or two phones that have huge differences in functionality makes your choice easy. But the two phones we're talking about today are both so good that choosing between them is a nightmare. We're putting the iPhone 4S up against the new HTC One SV, to see exactly how they compare. And whilst they are both individuals and have their own unique merits, they do sort of balance each other out. Keep reading to see if we can make a decision on which one is the better device for you...

Why You Should Go With the HTC One SV...

Alrighty, we'll start with the benefits of the HTC model. It is the faster phone. The One SV runs a 1200 MHz processor, rather than the 800 MHz processor on the iPhone, so it's snappier and more powerful. It also runs double the RAM, making it more responsive and better able to handle multi-tasking, or running simultaneous processes. And that's a good thing, because being an Android phone means that the HTC can run more than one application at a time, letting you chat on Skype and browse the internet without losing your connection. Apple phones can't do this. You get faster maximum data speeds on the One SV, meaning quicker downloading and faster opening of web pages. You also get a much bigger screen (four and a half versus three and a half inches). Finally, the HTC is a little lighter than the iPhone...

Why You Should Go With the iPhone 4S...

But the iPhone is not to be out-done; it has some benefits of its own. First off, the storage potential on the iPhone is much bigger. Depending on which model you buy, the 4S can have up to 64 GB of memory, as compared to just 8 GB on the HTC. That's a lot more music, photos, data and videos that you can put on your device; but bear in mind that the price goes up steeply with each memory increase. Despite having a smaller screen, the display on the iPhone is of better quality. It has twenty per cent higher screen resolution and thirty per cent more PPI (pixels per inch), making for a display that's noticeably brighter, more vivid and crisper. The in-built camera is also higher resolution, its 8 MP (as opposed to the 5 MP on the HTC) make for higher quality pictures with more fine detail. Finally, the iPhone comes in twenty per cent smaller than the One SV.

So Which One is Better?

This is a really hard decision, they're both amazing phones. If we're forced to choose, we'll say that the iPhone's extra internal memory and better screen quality probably make it slightly better. But we love the extra processing power and larger screen size on the HTC. Really, it's a toss-up, and depends a lot upon how much storage you need on your device.

Nowadays we have plenty of shopping options available to us when we are looking for a new mobile phone. This is generally a good thing but can make it much harder to narrow down the choice when it comes to making a final decision. So should you buy online or in a high street store?

Buying online

There are many advantages to purchasing online. The main one is that you do not have to get out of your pyjamas to do it! You can shop from the comfort of your own lounge and take your time choosing. You also have access to a wealth of information on mobile phones from reviews to the latest developments in the technology. You can shop around much more easily online as you can flick from site to site at the touch of a button and there are plenty of price comparison sites where you can check out the different contracts on a particular handset and see them side by side.

Online shopping for a new mobile also has its disadvantages. You cannot see the handset properly and will not have a chance to handle it. This means that until the phone arrives you won’t know if it sits comfortably in the hand and if the weight of it is a comfortable one for you.

Buying on the High Street

A bricks and mortar store is a good place to see the phone. Online images are often a little different from the phone when you see it in the flesh, so to speak, so you get to see the actual phone and decide if you like the look of it. You can handle the handset and make some informed decisions about the physical qualities of the phone.

If you want to shop on the High Street, however, you will find it can be a laborious process. This is because you may want to go from shop to shop checking out the deals that each provider has to offer. You will also have to put up with a great deal of sales patter from the staff in each one. You will probably find yourself saying 'No' a lot!

It seems that the best approach to getting yourself a new mobile phone is to combine the two. Have a look online to work out which handsets you might be interested in then take a trip around the shops to check out what they actually look like and feel like. Take care not to get drawn in by the sales speeches unless they offer you a deal that surpasses anything that you might have seen online.
Then go back to the Internet and pick out the deal that you want and order the handset from them if this is the most cost effective option for you.

Finding a new handset can be something of a minefield if you do not approach it the right way but getting the balance right is important. You do not want to find yourself with a handset that you absolutely cannot stand.
