The combination of the Dash Cycling Computer and the company's free iBike app turns the portable Apple device into a personal cycling trainer that tracks--among other things--speed, time, and heart rate.
The device uses ANT+ wireless speed sensors to track your pedal power. These sensors provide an accurate measure of speed, heart rate with varying target zones, and cadence (that's biker speed for rpm). It can also use GPS to track your route and can automatically store your workout data on a daily calendar.
And if you're the kind of not-so-easy rider who drops his or her iPhone or iPod on just about every block, the attachment comes with a tough, water-resistant case that allows you to use the touchscreen even while wearing your favorite pair of biker gloves.
The basic version costs $199 and the advanced version--which measures cadence, heart rate, and calories--costs $329. Both models are available for sale at Apple's online store or iBike's Website, and require either an iPhone 3G, 3GS, or 4 or a first-, second-, or third-generation iPod touch. The iBike app is available for download for free at the App store.

For more Macintosh computing news, visit Macworld.
A trio of rumors suggest that Apple is preparing a high-speed port called Thunderbolt for its new MacBook Pros. These findings include a German spec sheet, an English spec sheet and images of marketing materials and the port itself, which looks like a Mini DisplayPort with a thunder bolt icon. The connection between Light Peak and Thunderbolt is based on previous reports that Apple pushed Intel to develop the technology.

What is Light Peak?

Light Peak is an interconnect technology that Intel announced in late 2009. By using fiber optics instead of the electrical cables found in USB, Light Peak cables can be thinner, more flexible and able to travel up to 100 meters, according to Intel. And of course, they'll be fast, supporting transfer speeds of 10 gigabits per second initially, and 100 gigabits per second within a decade. In January, however, Intel announced that the first generation of Light Peak cables would use copper, making them slower and less reliable over long distances.

Although the rumored MacBook Pro input looks like Mini DisplayPort, Intel has said that Light Peak could also make use of USB 3.0 ports with additional components.

USB Killer?

Click to zoomIntel hasn't been shy about its intentions with Light Peak. "We view this as a logical future successor to USB 3.0," Kevin Kahn, an Intel senior fellow, said at an Intel Developer Forum in April 2010. "In some sense we'd ... like to build the last cable you'll ever need."

However, Intel has avoided saying that Light Peak and USB 3.0 are direct competitors, insisting that they are complimentary and could even run together on a single cable. Despite this public stance, Intel has been noncommittal with USB 3.0. The company's latest Sandy Bridge chipset doesn't include native USB 3.0 support, despite speculation to the contrary.

Light Peak and Apple: The Pieces Come Together

Although Intel has been talking about Light Peak for a year and a half, the company was strangely silent about its progress at the Storage Visions conference in January. This isn't too surprising if Intel is really partnering with Apple to debut the first Light Peak laptop. Apple is known for its secrecy and would obviously want Intel to clam up before the next-generation MacBook Pro launch. Apple may announce the new MacBook Pros on Thursday.

The missing piece is the other end of the connection -- that is, the external drives or other devices that take advantage of Light Peak's high transfer speeds. Perhaps Apple will introduce a Time Capsule hard drive with Light Peak support. We'll see what this week brings.

iPad 2 Could Be Unveiled March 2

Apple will reportedly unveil the iPad 2 on March 2, giving the world its first glimpse of the successor to the iPad, which has sold more than 15 million units. This leaves the tech world just under a week to rev up even more speculation surrounding the iPad 2 feature set, as well as keep a watchful eye on Android competitors arriving on the market.

Amid reports of iPad 2 delays until June, tech pundits corroborated their sources and believe March 2 to be the date Apple will unveil the new tablet. Kara Swisher at All Things Digital scooped the date, John Gruber of Daring Fireball says this "sounds right on schedule" and Miguel Heft at The New York Times reports next Wednesday is D-Day, too. Expect to hear about press invitations in the next few days, too, if March 2 is indeed the iPad 2 day.

iPad 2 specs ahoy

In Apple's traditional secretive manner, no official details about the iPad 2 have been unveiled, something that leaves plenty of space for speculation and reports from sources "close to the matter" or "familiar with company plans." However, by putting together reports on the iPad 2 specs over the past few weeks, a clearer picture emerges.

In a natural evolution, the iPad 2 is expected to be thinner and possibly lighter than its predecessor. It's possible Apple could opt for a higher-resolution display on the iPad 2, but because of developers' issues over a new resolution to work on, this could be unlikely. There is, however, the high chance to find a faster processor (maybe dual-core?), more RAM and a better graphics chip in the iPad 2.

Dual cameras have also been on the table for the iPad 2, but most recent reports indicate that the new tablet will have at least a front-facing camera to use with Apple's FaceTime and other video calling apps like Skype. Dual radio chips are also said to appear in the 3G iPad, allowing people to use the tablet with AT&T or Verizon. Price-wise, the iPad 2 is believed to stay within the same price points as the original, which would be sold alongside the new version at a lower price.

The real competition begins

Apple might have had the tablet market to itself last year (with the notable exception of the Samsung Galaxy Tab), but this year Android is tackling the tablet market, too. Android phones are outselling iPhones worldwide, so could we see a similar behavior in the tablet market also?

Verizon is now selling the 10-inch Motorola Xoom tablet, though at a higher price than the equivalent iPad and without Flash support initially. Samsung, HP and Research In Motion are also on track to launch their tablets this year, something that will make it more difficult for Apple to sell as many iPad 2s as the original model.

Amazon Prime vs. Netflix: Video Streaming Feature Showdown

Amazon recently unveiled its Amazon Prime unlimited video streaming service, an offering that will compete with a similar service from Netflix. You can use Amazon's new unlimited streaming deal to watch more than 5,000 movies and TV shows on your Mac or Windows PC, as well as select set-top boxes and Internet-connected TVs. The best part is Amazon Prime's video streaming is free with your annual $79 Prime membership fee. So how does Amazon's unlimited streaming service stack up against Netflix's all-you-can-watch video buffet? Let's take a look.

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a $79-per-year shipping discount service available for select items sold on Amazon. Prime offers you unlimited 2-day shipping with no minimum order size and a flat rate of $4 per item for one-day shipping. It's not clear why Amazon added video streaming to Prime, but for those already using the shipping service it's a nice bonus.

Title Showdown

On paper, Netflix's selection of about 20,000 titles beats out Amazon Prime's 5,000 titles, but there's a chance Amazon Prime could have the same popular titles as Netflix, right?

Wrong. Amazon Prime's selection isn't even close. A quick survey of Amazon's "Prime Eligible" pages for movies and TV shows reveals a dismal lack of popular and recent titles. For example, the top 5 Prime movies, according to Amazon's page, are "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" (2009); "Hairspray" (2007); "Analyze This" (1999); "Contact" (1997); and "Charlie's Angels" (2000). Netflix's most recent movie arrivals include "Star Trek" (2009); "2012" (2009); "Crank 2: High Voltage" (2009); "Imagine That" (2009)" and "The Young Victoria" (2009). None of the Netflix recent arrivals is available on Amazon Prime; however, you can stream these same titles using Amazon Instant Video, the site's pay-per-view streaming service.

Then again, if you just want unlimited access to movies such as "March of The Penguins," "Amadeus," "Syriana" and "A Clockwork Orange," then Prime will suit you just fine.

Price

There's no denying that Amazon Prime beats Netflix on price. Prime costs $79 per year, plus you get free shipping on some of your Amazon purchases. Netflix's streaming-only deal will run you $7.99 a month so with Prime you save about $1.41 per month or $16.88 per year. Just keep in mind that with a cheaper price comes a much smaller selection.

Platform

Thanks to the wide availability of Amazon Instant, Prime streaming titles are available on Mac or PC computers and on nearly 200 Internet-connected TVs and set-top boxes including Blu-ray players. Netflix is also on a comparable number of HDTVs and set-top boxes including Apple TV, a set-top box that doesn't offer Amazon Instant Video.

In addition, Netflix streaming is available on a limited number of mobile devices including the iPod Touch and iPhone (iOS 3.1.3 and up), iPad and Windows Phone 7 devices. Netflix is also expected to unveil an Android streaming app.

Less for Less
