Amazon.com now offers both online file storage and streaming media through two new cloud services. Cloud Drive is your “hard drive in the cloud” where you can store your music, photos, videos or documents. Your first 5 GB are free. Cloud Player is a streaming media player that you can use in a web browser or on an Android device. The player lets you access your stored music from anywhere, organize your collection, and create playlists. It gets better: any purchases from the Amazon MP3 store do not count toward your storage quota, and when you purchase any MP3 album (many are $5) your Cloud Drive will be upgraded to 20 GB for a year. Still nervous about the “cloud”? Don’t be scared.

Amazon has been offering cloud services to businesses for several years through its Amazon Web Services, but now it is finally leveraging its web-based infrastructure to serve its consumer customer base. If Amazon invented the Kindle to stimulate book sales, this new duo of services is clearly intended to boost its music sales. With a free online music player and free storage for purchases made from its MP3 store, the retail giant has created a compelling offering that can attract and lock-in customers — giving them a competitive advantage in the marketplaces for both digital music and online storage. What’s up Google and Apple?

Do you have more than one Gmail account that you access regularly? Perhaps you have one account for personal use, one for your business, and another for your Lindsay Lohan fan club? In the past, if you wanted to check multiple Gmail accounts, you needed to log out of one account and then log into another. Or you could have used more than one web browser at the same time (Firefox and Internet Explorer for example) and logged into a different Google account in each one.

Well, now Google has provided a better way. It is called their “Multiple Sign-In” feature and, just like it sounds, it allows you to be logged in to more than one Google account simultaneously in the same browser. It works for a select number of Google products including Gmail, Google Voice, Google Calendar, Google Reader, and a few others. To use this feature, you will need activate it in your account settings page for your primary Google Account:

Google wants to make sure you understand there are some limitations (including the disabling of offline modes for Gmail and Google Calendar), so it will first ask you acknowledge some details about how the feature works before it will activate it. Once you do this, a drop down menu will appear in the top right corner that will allow you to associate additional Google accounts and switch between them:

By using separate tabs or windows in your browser, you can have these different accounts visible simultaneously. And since each account uses a unique URL (i.e. mail.google.com/mail/u/0, mail.google.com/mail/u/1, etc.), you can create bookmarks for 1-click access to each of your accounts. Note that the feature is not currently available for Google Apps accounts, however you already have the ability to be logged into a Google Apps account at the same time as a standard Google account.

How many Gmail accounts do you manage?

Google has launched a new feature that allows you to make free calls from your PC using Gmail. It works with your Google Voice account and essentially provides you with a handy extra phone line that you can use at home, work, or when traveling.

Google has launched a new feature that allows you to make free calls from your PC using Gmail. It’s built into their existing “Google Chat”, which recently added voice and video pc-to-pc calling. Now it also includes a “Call Phone” link which opens a phone keypad window that you can use to make calls (plug-in download required). You can simply dial a number, or choose from suggestions it finds in your address book as you type a number or name. According to the announcement in their Gmail blog post, calls to the U.S. and Canada are “free for at least the rest of the year” and minimal rates to overseas.

What’s even better is that this feature will work with your Google Voice account if you have one (now available to the public). Your Google Voice phone number will display as the outgoing Caller ID, and you can receive calls in Gmail (and even screen them) by activating Google Chat in your list of phones in your Google Voice settings. So, what is the added benefit? If you haven’t figured it out yet – it’s a free phone line.

While Google Voice provides voicemail, call routing, custom voice messages, and other nifty features, you have always needed your own land-line phone or cellphone to use them. This new calling feature in Gmail essentially provides you with an extra phone line that you can use at home, work, or when traveling. It can be very handy if a land-line is unavailable, if you don’t want to use your cellphone minutes, or if you simply can’t get good cellphone reception. And it’s a perfect solution for those entrepreneurs running their small businesses out of Starbucks (rent=1 cafe latte, phone=$0).

The only catch is call quality. My trial run had a bit of static, but I don’t know how much of that was hardware related. A good headset may yield better results. The quality and strength of your internet connection will also be critical.

While Google is not the first to offer PC-based calling, it is the first that I’m aware of to offer it for free (to the U.S. and Canada, at least for now). And when it’s used in combination with the other Google services such as Gmail, Google Contacts, and Google Voice, its a very compelling feature. The service is being rolled out gradually to Gmail users, so it won’t show up for everyone immediately.

Have you tried making calls in Gmail? What do you think?

Despite the benefits, many people are still uncomfortable with the idea of storing their information in vague locations around the internet. If you're one of those folks having trouble getting cozy with the cloud, here's a few steps to help put you at ease.

With the growing use of web-based software, more of us today are becoming accustomed to working “in the cloud”. Cloud Computing simply refers to the sharing of computer resources using the internet. You are using the cloud when you’re writing an article for your blog on WordPress.com, uploading your photos to Flickr.com, or entering your customer information into Salesforce.com. Despite the benefits to using the cloud, many people are still uncomfortable with the idea of storing their information in vague locations around the internet. While it’s prudent to be cautious about the online services you use, there is no reason to be fearful of the technology itself. Most people were apprehensive about shopping on the internet during its infancy, but today it would be hard to find someone who hasn’t bought something online at least once. If you’re one of those folks having trouble getting cozy with the cloud, here are a few steps to help put you at ease:

1. Use Online Email

If you use Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, or any hosted email service than you are already using the cloud! All of your email in these accounts are stored somewhere other than your computer. Sure, these services have had a few rare outages, but you’ve never lost email from these accounts due to corrupt files or hard drive failures. If you’re one of the 5 people who haven’t used an online email service, give one a try and you will become more confident in the security and flexibility of hosted applications.

2. Fly on a Plane

For some people who suffer from the fear of flying, it is a result of one or more specific phobias such as claustrophobia (the fear of enclosed spaces) or agoraphobia (the fear of sweaters). For most, however, the affliction is simply caused by the feeling of not being in control. Of course, this anxiety isn’t based on logic. Unless you are Captain C.B. Sully Sullenberger, chances are that you and the other passengers are much safer with the pilot behind the controls instead of you. Similarly, most reputable online software companies are better equipped and more experienced to protect your data than you are.

3. Trust but Verify

It’s understandable to be concerned about the security of your information. Do your due diligence before putting sensitive information in the cloud. Most online services offer information on their website about how they store and protect your data. Smaller, start-up service providers often use resources from larger internet companies, like Amazon Web Services, so they can offer large scale application deployment and security. These data centers generally employ encryption and other sophisticated electronic security measures, as well as redundancy (data stored in multiple locations), and even physical security (actual guards with badges and guns). This is probably more protection than you are getting from your laptop, but trust your data with only those companies that you have confidence in.

4. Keep a Local Backup

If it makes you feel better to have your data in your physical possession, then by all means keep a local backup. Most online applications let you easily download a backup of your data anytime you’d like. Google Docs, for example, has a feature that allows you to download all of your documents as one zip file. Eventually you’ll come to realize that you’ll have little need for that backup, as your online data will always be accessible and current.

What’s so great about using the cloud? Because much of the data processing and storage occurs on a remote server rather than your computer, cloud computing offers several advantages:

It reduces the resources required of your computer (explaining the rise in popularity of netbooks).

Your data is not in danger of being lost if anything happens to your computer.

There’s no need to install or upgrade software (updates happen transparently on the web).

You can access your data from any computer.

You can easily share and collaborate with others.

For businesses, using the cloud means they can spend less on maintaining their own IT infrastructure, and invest instead in revenue-generating activities like Super Bowl ads.

Although you have nothing to fear from the cloud, its use does come with responsibilities. It’s important to protect your passwords and use precautions when using public computers and wifi. You also want to understand the policies regarding copyright protection and ownership for any websites where you share any intellectual property.

When used responsibly and securely, the cloud offers tremendous power and flexibility by leveraging the true potential of the internet.

Are you a fan or skeptic of the cloud? What do you like most, or what scares you most, about cloud computing?

Ning may offer a service that is sufficiently valuable and reputable at this point that they can survive with a paid-only model, but “free” isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. On the contrary, there are more and more free (and free versions) of online applications being offered every day.

Why is online software free?

Not to get too MBA here, but competition drives prices towards marginal cost (cost for each additional customer). And marginal cost for most online apps is pretty close to $0. That’s why email is free. When almost anyone can set up a server and software in their basement and offer email to millions of people, it’s very hard to charge much for the service. And as technology is improving, and software becomes easier and faster to create, this reduces barriers to entry and increases competition for even sophisticated applications. So, then, how do you make money with online software? There are several ways.

A Proven Model: Free + Paid

A model that has proven successful is offering multiple service levels. They beauty of online software is that creating different versions of your service is easy. You can have a free version that entices people to begin using your application, as well as versions that offer additional (or more customized) features that customers would be willing to pay for. It’s called “price discrimination“, and it’s how businesses try to extract as much revenue as possible from customers with different price sensitivities (i.e. coach vs. business class vs. first class).

Some free application providers offer their software entirely for free, but charge for support and maintenance (which has higher marginal cost). Most open source software is supported by a community of developers and service providers that profit by offering complimentary applications, support, and consulting.

Advertising Revenue

At the dawn of the internet age, most internet startups counted on advertising to support their business models once their funding was exhausted … only to be woefully disappointed. Well, today online advertising is a valid and thriving revenue source. And it’s not just about banner ads anymore. There are increasingly creative ways of using the internet medium to engage and interact with consumers — including video, social media, contests, etc. In fact, online advertising is proving to be even more valuable than TV ads. Just ask Pepsi, who sat out the Superbowl this year and instead invested their ad dollars into a social media campaign.

“Free” as a Marketing Tool

While some businesses may look at free software as lost revenue, perhaps they should look at it instead as lead generation. Most advertising folks say that giving away free stuff is one of the biggest bangs for your advertising dollar. And because, as we discussed, the marginal cost for online software is nil, it’s a cheap but powerful way to attract potential customers for your paid service. Once you have the attention of the free customers, you can sell them on upgrades and additional services.

Conclusion

Only time will tell if Ning made a good move by switching off its free offering entirely. Given their largely business/organization oriented customer base, it may work for them. Or it may be detrimental considering there are many free alternatives. With or without a free version, online service providers will survive in the long run by offering sufficient value to customers that they are willing to pay for its use, and/or sufficient traffic that advertisers are willing to pay to access.

When you compete against free, you must focus of providing value and maintaining loyalty, as well as pursuing other creative revenue streams.

Many users of Facebook, after rushing to fill their list of friends, have inadvertently found their previously distinct worlds of family, friends, and work suddenly colliding. Sometimes with serious consequences. When you are connected to hundreds (sometimes thousands?) of people on the social network, it can be easy to forget who can see your boastful tales of ditching work or the photos of your late night escapades.

As a result, some people are becoming more cautious about who they “friend” on Facebook, particularly when it comes to authority figures like parents or a boss. Fortunately, there is an easy way to add “Facebook Friends” with whom you’d rather not share everything.

First, should we consider perhaps that this increased level of visibility, that comes with a more social internet, gives us a reason to examine our words and deeds more carefully? If there are things we wouldn’t want certain people know we’ve said or done, is it possible that those are things we shouldn’t say or do in the first place? Nah. Let’s just find a way around it. Here is a way to keep select people from seeing more than what you want them to see.

Simply create a new “Friends List” with limited access to your information, and you can selectively add friends to this list when you connect with them. To create the list, go to your friends page, click “Friends” in the left column and then the “Create New List” button on the top of the page. In the pop-up window, enter the name of your new list (for example: “Limited”) and select any people you may already be friends with whom you’d like to add to this list. Then click “Create List”. Now go to your privacy settings page and click on the first item on this page, “Profile Information”. You will see a list of the various items that you share on Facebook, such as your personal information, posts, posts, etc.

For each category that you’d like hide from select friends, click on the button to the right of it to reveal the privacy options such as “Everyone”, ”Friends Only”, etc. Since you want to hide this for a specific group, click “Customize”. In the popup window, type “Limited” into the “Hide From These People” box . When the full name of the list appears, just click on it so it shows like below.

Then just click “Save Setting”, and this information will now be hidden from anyone in your “Limited” list as well as anyone you add to this list in the future. Repeat for any other items you would like restrict. You can also go back to your privacy settings page and click on “Contact Information” to similarly modify settings for your various contact details such as phone numbers and email addresses. Privacy settings for your photos are set in the albums themselves. So, just go to your photos from your profile page, and you’ll be able to modify the settings for each album. Keep in mind that although you can hide photos that you are tagged in, you can’t hide other peoples photos of you that are not tagged. Thus, the privacy of those photos is determined by the owner’s settings.

That’s it! Now whenever you become friends with someone new, before you click the “Send Request” or “Accept Request” button, click on “Groups” and select the “Limited” group if it is someone that you want to have minimal access. That way, the privacy settings will be effective for them immediately when you connect.

So don’t snub your parents, they created you. And you can be Facebook friends with your boss and coworkers if you are afraid of being left out. Just be sure to use your privacy settings to control who sees what.

As a final word of caution, don’t rely on Facebook’s privacy settings as a foolproof safeguard of your life. You never know where pictures and notes can wind up. The internet is the new “permanent record”. So, living your life as if your boss and your parents are watching may generally not be a bad idea.

What’s your policy on “friending” bosses and parents?
