My audio mysteriously stopped working after an upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. After spending some time it turns out my PCM settings were muted in gnome-volume-control. This can be started from the command line or from the audio icon in the task panel on top ( double click )

Check your PCM Mute/Unmute settings. This is different from the volume control that you get from clicking on the audio icon on the panel (single click )

Now this may not work for you if it’s a different issue you are facing. The ubuntu forums are quite good and you should be checking them out if you have general issues with your ubuntu installation.

It’s common for distribution creators and/or admins managing a large set of systems to install common software for users. For the Mozilla Firefox browser if you have a need to install addons that are global, this is how you do it.

The firefox command-line offers an option to do this - “-install-global-extension”

Firefox addons are downloadable as xpi files which can be extracted using zip/unzip tools. However extracting the addon xpi files using a tool like unzip is not enough as firefox needs to do a bit more than just extract the xpi file under it’s extensions folder.

So, next time you need an addon to be visible globaly, just use a simple firefox invocation

firefox -install-global-extension <your global addon>.xpi

Note the single dash in -install-global-extension!

I wanted to access my folders at my hosting provider for local access on my system. It’s very simple using just a few commands and viola, local access to remote ssh folders. Why ssh? well it’s secure. Why access localy? My personal machine does offer me lots more tools including my favorite editor - vim

So here’s what you got to do. BTW I am running 8.04 - hardy heron.

Check that your system is using the fuse kernel module. Well what is FUSE you ask? FUSE stands for Filesystem in Userspace. It’s a cool technology for linux where you can mount various filesystems in user mode! It implements a thin kernel abstraction so that all the filesystem fun can be moved to userspace. Here’s how you can check

#lsmod|grep fuse

fuse 50708 5

if you do not see fuse show up above then you need to install the module.

#sudo modprobe fuse

#sudo adduser fuse

#sudo chown root:fuse /dev/fuse

#sudo chmod +x /dev/fusermount

On my Ubuntu 8.04, I have fuse already setup and running so none of the above steps are needed. Next you install the sshfs package

sudo apt-get install sshfs

Now create a folder in you home where you want the remote folder to be be visible. Let’s call it remoteFun

mkdir remoteFun

Now all you need is a simple sshfs invocation

sshfs <username>@<remote host>:<remote path to mount root/sub folder is ok> remoteFun

That’s it, now enter your password for the remote machine and you have access to the remote contents inside remoteFun

cd remoteFun

ls .

Just watch out if you are providing a sub folder path in the remote host, you may have symlinks that may not work in your local mount.

Atheros has released the ath9k to the community. This driver is aimed at inclusion to the Linux kernel and supports all Atheros IEEE 802.11n devices. This represents a major shift in terms of support from Atheros with respect to Linux. The ath9k driver comes shortly after Atheros hired two key Linux wireless developers — Luis Rodriguez and Jouni Malinen.

Atheros plans to add access point support to ath9k and to work with the community to enhance and complete access point support in the Linux kernel. Jouni Malinen will help drive this process within the community while Luis helps enhance regulatory compliance in the Linux kernel.

The ath9k driver includes supports for the following chipsets:

AR5418+AR5133
AR5416+AR5133
AR5416+AR2133
AR9160
AR9280
AR9281

Further information can be found at wireless.kernel.org. ath9k-related information will be added to madwifi.org soon.

The automattic team - creators of wordpress and bbpress have announced the availability of a native iPhone app for blogging on the go. The app supports both wordpress.com hosted blogs and self hosted wordpress.org blogs - version 2.5.1 or newer. Time to upgrade our blog from 2.5 to 2.5.1 release I guess!

The wordpress app is also open source - source code available for free! So all you coders and OSS world changers out there just go and hack the hell out of it. Even if you do not plan to hack the app, it can serve as a good learning source for building an iPhone application.

Kudos to Matt! and the automattic team for making such a great app for the iPhone!

Here’s a video tutorial on how it works.

Medibuntu maintains an unofficial repository of commonly needed software for ubuntu 8.04. Free software that can’t be included in the official distribution due to legal restrictions but which are necessary for a complete multimedia experience on ubuntu desktops can be found here.

Here’s a list of popular apps that medibuntu hosts

skype

googleearth

dvd playback libraries

mplayer

acrobat reader

window 32 and 64 bit codecs

other non-free codecs

amarok

Getting the packages is simple. Just follow the steps below.

Step 1: Add Medibuntu to Your Repository List

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

Next install Medibuntu’s GPG key to ensure proper authentication.

sudo aptitude install medibuntu-keyring

When prompted, type “Yes” to complete the package installation. Finally, update the list of repositories available to the aptitude package management program on your system.

sudo aptitude update

E.g.: Installing Audio and Video Codecs

You can get most audio and video file formats working by installing a single package from the Medibuntu repository. If you are using a machine with a 32 bit processor, type the following command in the terminal.

sudo aptitude install w32codecs

SOURCE: medibuntu
