Past Wordle answers — every solution so far, alphabetical and by date

Memorizing all of the past Wordle answers is nearly impossible – after all, there have now been more than 1,700 of them. And even though Wordle answers do now repeat (see below), it can still be helpful to know what's gone before.

That's partly because the early evidence is that answers are not all that likely to appear twice; we've only had three repeats since Wordle changed its strategy in early February, so new words are still more common than old ones.

Repeated answers

As you probably know, Wordle is now repeating answers. I've added an asterisk next to any solutions that have appeared more than once. If any are repeated twice I'll add a second asterisk and so on. I've also included a standalone section that lists all repeats. Jump to it here.

But even outside of that, it can be interesting to see what happened in the past. Plus, knowing the kind of words that might appear can help you decide what to play today.

What you need then, is a list of past Wordle answers, and that's what I've made for you here. It's organized by month and you can simply search the page to see whether the word you're thinking of has already been used. It won't be a guarantee that it won't appear again, but it might help.

So pick one of the best Wordle starting words, take a look at today's Wordle answer if you need to and keep this list close when you're playing.

I've first organized the answers alphabetically, and then by month starting with the most recent. You can use the menus on the side (on desktop) or above (on mobile) to jump straight to the month you want. This year, 2025 and 2024 are on this page, and there's a second page with 2023, 2022 and 2021 on it (and the alphabetical list is on both pages).

If you're trying to find out whether a specific word has already been an answer, there are easy ways to search for it:

In each case, simply type in the word you're looking for, and if it has already been an answer you can use the arrows to navigate to it.

Past Wordle answers: Days with two answers

On which days have there been two Wordle answers?

One of the key things about Wordle is that everyone gets the same answer each day. Or is it? There have been four occasions when the game has served up two different solutions, causing no end of consternation among players.

The first two were victims of the New York Times' purchase of the game in February 2022. The NYT removed around a dozen words that it decided were too difficult for players, or that were in some way controversial.

However, at that time people could play either via the NYT's games site, or via the original Wordle website created by Josh Wardle. And unfortunately, the changes made by the NYT didn't always filter through correctly to the original version.

The result was that on February 15, 2022 some people got AROMA and some the much harder AGORA for puzzle #241. Then on March 30, the same thing happened with STOVE and HARRY for game #284; the NYT thought people would only consider HARRY to be a name, and not a verb (as in to harrass), so it removed it.

The problem reoccurred in May 2022. On May 10 (game #324), the NYT removed the word FETUS in the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision to repeal Roe vs Wade, deeming it too controversial. Instead, most players got SHINE. The next day, some players got GECKO while others received BUTCH, due to the NYT's servers not yet having reset for everyone from the previous day's change.

Today's Wordle answer (game #1793) is… BYLAW.

And so it continues. We've now had eight consecutive games of above 4.0, and 14 out of the last 15. I usually like the challenge of a more difficult Wordle, but this is beginning to tire out my poor old brain. They've all been original solutions too, so it's not as if the NYT is actively trying to make it tough for us all, unless it's been rearranging the order.

More likely it's just the sort of statistical anomaly you will inevitably get after nearly 1,800 games; there have also been periods when we've been stuck in easy mode, for instance September 2025, when we had 13 out of 15 games below 3.9 (and six of those were below 3.5).

BYLAW, at 4.3, is far from the worst of this recent run, but it's a tricky character all the same. The misplaced Y and uncommon W are the biggest complications here and contribute to a format that feels (and is) unfamiliar.

I struggled with it, scoring a five, and although WordleBot awarded me 99 for skill, I certainly didn't feel like I was ever really sure what was going on.

In fact, I didn't even consider BYLAW as an option until that fifth guess. My first couple of attempts had narrowed down the word pool to 15, and for my third I went with LOCAL despite the fact that it meant repeating the L.

My reasoning was that it would help with a potential word trap of LOCAL/FOCAL/VOCAL, ruling out one and pointing the way towards the other two. As a byproduct, it would be likely to place my yellow L at one of the two ends of the board.

It didn't do either of those things, instead leaving me a 50/50 that I remained blind to. In fact, I didn't spot either of them for a long time, before eventually stumbling upon GULAG and reasoning that it must be the answer because I'd been thinking for five minutes and couldn't find anything else.

Sadly, it was not GULAG — which meant I had to spend yet more time staring at letters until I came up with BYLAW and was this time able to close the deal. Not fun.

Yesterday's Wordle hints (game #1792)

In a different time zone where it's still Saturday? Don't worry — I can give you some clues for Wordle #1792, too.

M is a middling letter when it comes to starting a word. It sits 10th in the rankings, with 107 occurrences in the 2,309 answers.

There were no repeated letters in yesterday's Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it's still more likely that a Wordle doesn't have one.

The last letter in yesterday's Wordle was R.

R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it's actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.

Yesterday's Wordle answer (game #1792) was… MOVER.

Congratulations, everyone! You have just completed what is officially the hardest week in Wordle's history. Yes, the past seven days have collectively been tougher than any before, with MOVER coming in at 4.8 and sending the overall average for the week to 4.57.

The previous record, if you're interested, was 4.48 for the seven games up to and including the awful PARER in September 2022, but that one answer skewed the average, so on the whole this run has been way worse.

I do have a couple of caveats. One, you could argue that it's not really a week. Does a week start on a Saturday? Probably not — Monday would be more like it. So really it's more like 'the toughest seven-day run', but that isn't quite as snappy. And two, I don't have average scores for the first 200-odd games, so maybe there was an even harder sequence in the early days.

I doubt it, though. I mean, just look at this!

MOVER is at least easier than WAVER and a tiny bit below DOWDY too, but by any other measure it's a monumentally tricky Wordle.

Like WAVER it's an ER word, like WAVER it has an uncommon V in the middle. On the plus side, the M at the start is a little more common, and there are also slightly fewer -O-ER words than -A-ER words (25 to 29).

Hey, look, I'm trying my best to find silver linings in this cloud, alright!

Actually, I do have one other positive, in that I scored a four once again. I had an advantage of course, because SANER gave me the ER at the end right away, and then I made what was either a very lucky or inspired second guess.

Specifically, I went with DIVOT — which gave me the O and the V. This was calculated, because I know that V is a more common letter in an ER word than it is in general, and there was probably some recency bias involved too, given that WAVER was still fresh in my mind.

Either way, it worked, cutting my 111 options down to five. These were all genuine possibilities, though, so I still had work to do: MOVER, LOVER, COVER, ROVER and HOVER.

I needed a good narrowing-down word, and went with MULCH — which as far as I know was the only choice that would have guaranteed me a four. When the M turned green I had my solution, and breathed a big sigh of relief.

What is Wordle?

If you're on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you've not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it's the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2026.

We've got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it's in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it's not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It's played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times' Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4a. Answers are never plural.

4b. …unless they are. There have been a couple of plural words that don't end in an S or ES, including FUNGI (game #439), ATRIA (#1478) and TEETH (#1551). But S and ES plurals are definitely outlawed.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10a. All answers are drawn from Wordle's list of 2,309 solutions…

10b. …unless they are not. That's because the NYT has added in some of its own words which weren't in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.

10c. Plus, the NYT has now started repeating answers that have already appeared in Wordle. We have no idea how often it will do this, so you'll need to be on your guard.

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won't be right (see point 4a above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.

I scored my 88th Spangram First today, although BOWLINGALLEY was not exactly hard to spot — they may as well have put flashing neon bulbs around it.

To say that I found this search easier than a game of Ten Pin Bowling would be an understatement. Although I love playing the game — I even like the shoes — I am shockingly bad at it and in the unlikely event that I ever get a strike I will follow it up with 1s and 2s that defy science.

I was, then, familiar with all the many aspects and attractions of a BOWLINGALLEY although I spent longest over the final word ARCADE.

Strands is the NYT's not-so-new-any-more word game, following Wordle and Connections. It's now a fully fledged member of the NYT's games stable that has been running for a year and which can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

No, Google is not ending its 15GB of free Gmail storage policy — it's testing a 5GB initial limit that jumps to the full amount if you add a phone number

Google is changing its storage policy for new Gmail accounts
New accounts in some regions will only get 5GB of free storage space
Adding a phone number will unlock the standard 15GB of room

For many years, Google has given users 15GB of free cloud storage space when they sign up for Gmail (which is actually shared across Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive) — but a change to that policy is now being trialled.

Google has confirmed to Android Authority that it is "testing" a new approach in "select regions" where new users only get 5GB initially. That then goes up to the full 15GB once the account owner adds a phone number to their details.

This is only for new accounts, only in certain parts of the world, and only a test (for now) — if you've already got a Google account, nothing is going to happen to your 15GB of free storage for Gmail and Google's other services.

The move will "help us continue to provide a high quality storage service to our users, while encouraging users to improve their account security and data recovery" says Google. It sounds as though Google wants to be better able to verify identities behind accounts, while also collecting more data on its users, of course.

Paying with your privacy

Gmail now gives 5gb free if you sign up without phone number from r/degoogle

Officially, Google doesn't require a phone number when you create a new account, though if you search the web you'll find it does sometimes insist on a number being registered. It's not clear why exactly, but the requirement may kick in if Google's systems suspect some kind of fraudulent or spam activity.

The new approach means adding a phone number isn't compulsory — but you'll only get a third of the free storage if you do. The change was originally reported by PiunikaWeb based on a Reddit thread from a user who hit the limitation.

Reactions on that thread are about as negative as you might expect: one commenter suggests Google has moved to "the 'bribery for your data' stage", while another says that "you're paying for your privacy" if you sign up with Gmail.

This comes against the backdrop of a wider age verification crackdown in tech, with an increasing number of apps and websites asking users to confirm they are who they say they are, ostensibly to boost user security and safely silo off adult content.

Seeing the word “French” along the top row was impossible to ignore making FRENCHBAKERY, one of the easiest-to-spot spangrams I can remember.

From here on in it was simply a case of how much patisserie you are familiar with — as someone who is a fan of TV cooking shows and of eating as many cakes and pastries as possible, I found it all rather easy. That said, I'm sure everyone saw MOUSSE immediately too.

Indeed the biggest challenge of the day was spelling CROISSANT. Actually, scratch that, the biggest challenge of the day is not leaving my desk to go out to buy a CROISSANT.

Completing Quordle in seven goes is getting very rare for me these days, but I think I can be forgiven for guessing “sheep” instead of SLEEP.

This theme was confusing — was it some kind of reference to Elmer Fudd? Or were we looking for animals similar to weasels.

Unable to find anything related to either I took a hint and OTTER set me in the right direction.

I got BADGER next and realized the type of animals we were looking for, although it wasn’t until I finally got the spangram that I learned that all of today’s words belong to a family of animals called MUSTELIDS, grouped together due to their carnivorous diets and long bodies with short legs. I don’t think Elmer qualifies in either category.

YouTube is turning its TV app into a one-stop shopping platform — here’s how its new Buy with Google Pay tool allows you to buy products from advertisers in ‘just two clicks’

The company also announced two new AI-powered features

YouTube’s TV app is about to get a new function, but it has nothing to do with upgrading your viewing experience — instead, the company wants to make shopping through its ads a lot more convenient.

At its annual Brandcast event on May 13, YouTube unveiled a series of new features designed to “connect brands to YouTube's most impactful cultural moments and trending conversations”, the company says in its blog post. One of those features is Buy with Google Pay, a tool that will allow you to buy products “with just two clicks” from ads right from YouTube’s TV app interface on smart TVs and streaming devices.

This marks the next step in YouTube’s expansion of shoppable ads. Last year the company revealed its interactive product feed allowing advertisers to list products on the right side of the screen while ads play in between videos, allowing you to click on the listing where it will then display a QR code for you to scan with your phone to take you through to the purchase link.

Targeting pain points

With this new functionality, YouTube targets a pain point with TVs, as entering payment details onto larger devices can be quite a process. Allowing viewers to purchase through ads by using the payment details already stored in their Google account removes this hassle.

Not only this, but more users are flocking to YouTube’s TV app for bigger viewing, which has opened a gap for the company to take advantage of. With more viewers using YouTube on smart TVs and streaming devices it creates an opportunity for YouTube to push more advertisers and their products to more people — but could really take a toll on impulsive purchasing habits.

Custom sponsorships

Aside from the expanded commercialization of its TV interface, YouTube is rolling out even more features to go alongside it, and two of them are powered by AI.

As per YouTube’s announcement, its Custom Sponsorships tool uses AI to “dynamically surface videos tailored to a brand’s desired moment”. In other words, brands won’t need to manually select channels and content categories where they want their ads to be displayed.

YouTube also unveiled Multimodal Video Creation, which uses Google AI models such as Gemini, Nano Banana, and Veo to “move from creative brief to final production with just a few prompts” — eliminating production time and cost.

Regarding the clickable ads in the YouTube TV app, convenience is clearly the selling point here, but the bigger picture is harder to ignore. YouTube isn’t just trying to make ads easier to watch — it’s trying to remove every possible barrier between attention and spending money, without ever leaving its TV app.

Microsoft's Copilot can now peek into your open tabs in Edge — if you let it — as part of new AI features for the browser

Microsoft has retired Copilot Mode, which came to the browser last year
It's been replaced by a raft of separate AI features, including one that can (with your permission) scan across all your open tabs

Microsoft is dropping Copilot Mode from Edge, but if you thought that AI was going away from the web browser, think again, as AI features are actually being baked directly into the app instead.

Microsoft announced that as part of the latest update for Edge, Copilot Mode is being retired from the browser, but there are new AI features coming in for the desktop version of the app (and the mobile one, too).

The biggest change here is that Copilot can now scan over all the tabs you have open in Edge and pull information to answer your queries.

The idea is that if you are, for example, planning to book a meal and you're mulling over different choices for restaurants across multiple tabs, you can get Copilot to compare those options without having to leave your current web page.

There's no setup required for this; you can just click the Copilot icon and get it to do the legwork for you in terms of pulling details from across those open tabs.

Microsoft explains: "Copilot in Edge, with your permission, reads across every tab you have open, so you can compare options, surface what matters, and make decisions with less tab-hopping."

Copilot can go further than this, and — with your permission again, Microsoft underlines — the AI can access your browsing history to improve its responses. It can remember and draw from previous queries, too.

As Microsoft notes: "Now, with long-term memory on desktop and mobile, Copilot not only builds on what you've seen but also can reference your past chats to provide more relevant help. You're always in control of what Copilot can access."

Extra AI functionality is also being added in terms of a 'Study and Learn' mode, which can break down a topic on a web page you're viewing to create a guided study session, or you can even have Copilot compile a quiz on the subject to test your knowledge.

Another AI feature is an in-line writing assistant, essentially summoning Copilot to write (or edit) things like social media posts for you in Edge. Copilot can also generate a podcast based on the content of any given web page.

In terms of Edge for mobile, the browser also gets Copilot's ability to work across all your open tabs to concoct better answers to your queries, as well as other functionality pulled from the desktop browser. (That includes 'Journeys,' which organizes your browsing history into topics, letting you pick up where you left off with those threads).

Note that some features are for the US only, for the moment — namely, the writing assistant and Journeys on Edge mobile.

Analysis: Copilot cloak engaged

So, the tack Microsoft is now taking is to effectively cloak Copilot. The AI isn't going away from Edge, but the more in-your-face presence — Copilot Mode, introduced almost a year ago now — is being shelved, with AI functionality instead being woven more subtly into the browser in different ways.

And granted, some of the features outlined above could be pretty useful. The worry for some is on the privacy front, although Microsoft is clear enough that Copilot only gets access to nose around in your tabs if you click the button for the AI.

The company makes clear: "With Copilot in Edge, your data stays yours. Microsoft only collects what's needed to improve your experience — or what you choose to provide via Personalization settings."

If you steer clear of clicking the Copilot icon and don't enable any of these features in Edge's settings, there will be no privacy issues. Or there shouldn't be, anyway, but that hasn't stopped some predictably negative reaction to Microsoft's latest Edge update.

There are certainly a few Redditors who don't trust what Microsoft is up to here, and comments like this aren't uncommon: "Microsoft Edge and privacy don't go in the same sentence."

Microsoft is busy trying to change the bad reputation it has been saddled with since Windows 11 arrived — which very much worsened with the advent of Copilot in the OS — and notably, we now have the big drive to fix everything that's wrong with Windows 11.

However, with skeptical Redditors saying things like "K2 will mean nothing" in reaction to this latest move for Edge — K2 is the codename of the project to streamline Windows 11, debloat the OS, and make it more performant — it looks like Microsoft still has a good deal of trust-building to do.

Ticketmaster president says queue placements aren’t randomized despite previous claims, but it’s still not giving us music fans the explanation we deserve

Ticketmaster has found itself in yet another catastrophic sinkhole thanks to its president, who just dropped a massive bombshell about positions in queues.

For years, music fans have been told that queue placements on Ticketmaster are randomized to give everyone a chance at scoring tickets to see their favorite artists. It turns out that the live music behemoth has been lying to our faces.

A conversation on X between Ticketmaster president Saumil Mehta and fan account @lexs_version sparked this, where Mehta replied to the latter’s complaints about queue positions, claiming that he ‘doesn’t know where this notion that queue positions are random came from’. According to Mehta, no such claim had been made by him or anyone at Ticketmaster, but he very quickly met his match when a slurry of accounts pulled up a 2018 post shared by the official Ticketmaster account page explicitly stating that queue placements are randomly assigned (see below). Mehta has gone radio silent ever since, leaving us without an explanation.

This has sparked a new burning question: if Ticketmaster doesn’t randomize queue placements and it doesn’t matter what time you join the online waiting room, what criteria is Ticketmaster using to determine queue numbers?

The hole is only getting deeper

In the original X post that started it all, the user addressed the patterns in their waiting line positions when trying to purchase tickets for Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine Tour, claiming that they were placed around the 80,000 mark in every queue they joined. When they tried this on a separate account, every waiting room they joined placed them around the 20,000 mark — resulting in an oddly consistent pattern of placements.

However, this is just one example, and apparently, these consistent queue placements are a common occurrence for a lot of people. This has opened a widespread investigation among music fans who are now pinning it down to one theory: account activity.

This has led users to believe that accounts with higher activity tend to score lower-numbered placements in Ticketmaster’s waiting line, giving them a better chance at purchasing tickets. For example, one user believes that the reason they’ve managed to buy multiple tickets for a single tour is because they use their account to transfer out every ticket they buy to those who are attending the show with them.

Now, music fans are even more convinced that the company has been prioritizing scalpers and resellers all along because, if we’re basing this on account activity, accounts designed to scam others would need to spend a lot of time purchasing tickets and then going back through Ticketmaster to list them for resale, where they can get away with charging way above face value.

As a result, it means that Ticketmaster can potentially make more money on resale fees, while genuine music fans are left having to pay exorbitant prices on resale tickets, or spend money on VIP tickets and other exclusive packages — a.k.a: the types of tickets that are usually the only ones that are left because of their low demand.

It's still just a theory, and Mehta has neither confirmed nor denied if this is the case, but the longer Mehta stays silent, the more agitated and demanding customers become.

Ticketmaster has been under intense scrutiny since the Eras Tour fiasco, and it hasn't been long since Ticketmaster's parent, Live Nation, was deemed an illegal monopoly — so Mehta's apparent slip-up really is the icing on the cake.

Europe wants to dodge troublesome regions by building undersea cables beneath the Arctic

If you currently access or communicate with the internet in Asia as a European, around 90% of your traffic travels via subsea internet cables in the Middle East.

Given the recent conflict between the US and Iran, expanding capacity and building new projects has been a bit of a non-starter, as Meta well knows.

To combat this bottleneck, and to avoid the obvious troubles of navigating the internet via Russia, the European Union wants to take the Northwest Passage, or transit the North Pole.

Putting the internet on ice

The two proposed solutions, under the name Polar Connect, come with their own challenges, but apparently the EU is willing to take icebergs and thick sea ice over a region of periodic instability and Vladimir Putin, so much so that the EU has listed Polar Connect as a priority project with an operational goal of 2030.

For one route, going via the Northwest Passage in Canada to Asia, there is the obvious issue that has plagued navigators from John Cabot to John Franklin: the region is packed with sea ice. The unfortunate silver lining is that climate change has reduced the Arctic ice pack by a considerable amount, making the route a viable option.

As for the North Pole route, the cables would start in Scandinavia and travel across the North Pole.

Both routes would require specialist ice-breaking cable-laying equipment with a hefty price tag, or one ship to break ice and another to lay cable - which is equally expensive. But the costs seem to be a reasonable price to pay to have a more reliable connection with Asia.

This isn’t the first time undersea cables have been laid beneath the Arctic ocean. Quintillion was the last company to attempt such a venture, and had some success. A length of cable began at Nome, ran along the northern coast of Alaska, and reached Prudhoe Bay. Unfortunately, icebergs can drag their lower halves across the bottom of the seafloor at depths beyond that of an undersea cable, damaging or even cutting them in an event known as an “ice scour”.

When Quintillion encountered this problem in June 2023, they did not have access to an icebreaker and so had to wait for the ice to melt before being able to repair the cable. The same happened again in January 2025, leading to an eight month downtime leaving many Alaskans without high-speed internet. Quintillion never laid the rest of the route to Asia.

But given the expense of attempting to lay, repair cables — and navigate the potential taxation of undersea cables by unfriendly nations in the Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden — a €2 billion route through the Arctic provides Europe with sovereignty over their cables, and the data flowing through it.

Microsoft is asking for your help to fix Windows 11 — and I'm hopeful this isn't just a desperate move

Microsoft has started a new research panel
It's aiming to get feedback on the Windows 11 interface from testers
The program will consist of a number of studies going forward, focusing on different areas of the user experience

Microsoft is making further efforts to get feedback from Windows 11 users on how to improve the operating system, with a new program aimed at Windows testers.

Yes, this is part of the campaign to fix Windows 11 (pretty much everything Microsoft does these days is). As Windows Latest reports, invitations are being sent out for a new 'Windows Insider Panel' whereby testers are being asked to put themselves forward to offer feedback on the Windows 11 interface.

Those invited (via email) need to fill in a survey which gives Microsoft a good idea of the way in which they use Windows 11 (productivity, creative apps, gaming and so forth).

The Windows and Devices UX (user experience) research panel is going to run various studies going forward, and if you're a good fit for whatever Microsoft is looking at in the way of changing Windows 11 in any particular study, they might bring you in to provide your opinions.

In the email sent out, Microsoft observes that this is a chance to: "Join and help shape the future of Windows."

Analysis: a new hope

As if we hadn't received enough in the way of signals that Microsoft really is taking its revamping of Windows 11 very seriously, this is another clear sign. Indeed, the company has already run a meeting with Windows Insiders (testers) in Seattle, noting back at the time that it is "really directly influenced" by what it's hearing from Windows 11 users.

This new research panel is set to be an ongoing project and series of studies to improve the user interface of Windows 11, which is an exciting development. I suppose you could argue that it smacks of Microsoft getting a bit desperate and clutching at straws for ideas on how to make things better, but I'm inclined to give the software giant the benefit of the doubt here.

Indeed, I'm genuinely impressed at the lengths Microsoft is going to with this whole 'fix Windows 11' initiative, and while I was initially skeptical about all the big promises the company has made, it has, so far, followed through with them in a commendably thorough fashion.

Of course, there's still a long way to go on the path of improving Windows 11 in terms of not just its interface, but performance levels. However, if Microsoft can keep up this level of commitment, I'll remain optimistic – and that's been a very difficult feeling to muster with Windows 11 in the past.

“Men in tights” could only mean one thing surely? Superheroes and their sidekicks. It was with confidence therefore that I tapped out “robin” — the name of Batman’s sidekick back in the tights era. Alas, it was not to be.

Fortunately I spotted “hood” on the top row and realized that the “men in tights” we were seeking were from an era far beyond the 1960s.

From here on it was just a case of remembering the significant factors of the ROBIN HOOD tale — although the only version I’m familiar with involved a fox, a tortoise and a bear who was into jazz.

It's the infrastructure that many big tech companies are investing in
However, there are concerns over how feasible the technology actually is

There's a lot of effort and money going into plans to put data centers in space — mostly to meet the growing demands of AI processing — and Google and SpaceX are now reportedly in talks to clutter up Earth's orbit even further.

As per The Wall Street Journal and "people familiar with the discussions", talks are underway between the two giant tech companies. Google would provide the data centers, and SpaceX would provide the rockets to get them where they need to be.

There's not a lot of other detail here, although the report says Google is discussing its options with "other rocket-launch companies". It's a sensitive time for SpaceX, with an IPO expected in just a few months, and deals like this would certainly do no harm as far as the company's valuation goes.

It's also worth noting that Google owns 6.1% of SpaceX. Google has made no secret of its plans to put data centers up in space: "There's no doubt to me that a decade or so away, we'll be viewing it as a more normal way to build data centers," Google CEO Sundar Pichai told Fox News in an interview last November.

But can it work?

Given that so many big companies are investing in this technology, you'd be forgiven for thinking that it's all ready to go — but that's not quite the case.

As it stands, the tech isn't currently available due to various engineering challenges, and people like OpenAI's Sam Altman don't think this is a feasible idea in the short-term.

On the plus side: there's a lot of room up in space (though not quite as much as there used to be), and a lot of power, thanks to the constant availability of solar energy. It wouldn't be necessary to disrupt neighborhoods or overload power grids every time a giant new data center needed to be built.

However, this is also incredibly costly and incredibly difficult from a technical perspective. Current data center technology isn't built to withstand the extremes of space, and there's also the question of how repairs can be carried out in orbit.

For those who fully believe in the future of the technology, those problems can be overcome given time, funding, and further research. However, it's going to be a while before we see this working at scale.

Microsoft reveals another way it's making Windows 11 faster, with more performance boosts promised for the likes of File Explorer

With WinUI 3 being employed more widely across Windows 11, and tweaked for better performance, it's another key way in which the OS could be made faster

We've learned more about Microsoft's efforts to make Windows 11 faster, discovering another front that the company is working on to ensure the operating system becomes more performant in terms of core interface elements.

Windows Central reports that the big drive for better performance — which is part of the broader campaign to fix Windows 11 — doesn't just involve transitioning elements of the Windows 11 interface to use WinUI 3, but actually speeding up WinUI itself.

For the uninitiated, WinUI refers to the contemporary framework for the user interface (UI) of Windows. It's used by Microsoft for many of the core apps and elements of Windows 11, and can also be used by third-party software developers to make their own apps fit with the look and feel of the OS.

So, Microsoft is employing WinUI 3 in more places within Windows 11, but is also making it perform better, as software engineer Beth Pan makes clear in a post on GitHub, stating that: "Our mission is to make WinUI 3 the best native UI platform for Windows experiences and apps, and performance is at the heart of that effort."

Pan adds: "Making this a reality means delivering performance improvements at multiple levels, including within WinUI itself."

The software engineer further notes: "We've been zeroing in on launch time, using File Explorer and Notepad as our primary benchmarks, with an emphasis on improvements that broadly benefit most apps."

Pan then breaks down some of the performance boosts that have been achieved so far with File Explorer, including 41% and 63% fewer allocations and transient allocations, respectively, as well as 45% fewer function calls — and a 25% reduction in the time spent in WinUI code.

Analysis: a long-term commitment for fundamentals and quality, we're told

What does that mean in reality? Well, these changes are still very much in early development, and we don't know what the mentioned improvements actually add up to in terms of making File Explorer launch faster. There's no "it'll be x seconds quicker" here (of course, launch times will naturally vary on different configurations of hardware, anyway).

However, the gist is clear — there's a good deal of optimization work going on with core elements of Windows 11 along these lines, and it's bound to help with performance. Especially given that this work isn't happening in isolation.

Remember that Microsoft also has projects on the boil to improve File Explorer performance in various ways, and one of those is 'Low Latency Profile'. This is a recently revealed CPU trick that could be instrumental in making a whole lot of apps and Windows 11 interface elements operate a good deal more responsively.

Another heartening theme evident here is one of greater collaboration within Microsoft. Pan observes in the post: "The approach here is we do what we can from [the] framework side, and [obviously] other teams in Windows also investigated and [have] been doing work to improve overall launch perf, we connect/collaborate frequently to make sure the improvements will be end-to-end. It's a long-term commitment for fundamentals and quality."

This all sounds very positive for the future, and as someone else commenting on the GitHub post, claiming to be an ex-Microsoft employee, observes, "This was by far the most frustrating thing working with you guys, every team seemed to do their own thing. I hope you guys really push to fix that."

Thus far, the scope of the Windows 11 revamp is laudably wide, so let's hope the reality lives up to the promising early work we're seeing and that Microsoft is indeed pulling together to work more effectively between its different Windows groups.

The FBI just remotely reset thousands of home and small office routers – and your TP-Link could be on the hitlist

The FBI have remotely reset thousands of home and small office routers after releasing a joint press release detailing how Russia has been compromising devices.

Some brands of routers are known for lasting upwards of a decade, and while that's great for the consumer, the developers will often stop releasing updates to keep the router secure.

This leaves them open to compromise by attackers, specifically Russia’s Main Directorate of the General Staff (GRU), tracked as APT28 or Fancy Bear, which has been snooping on unsecured routers since at least 2024, the FBI said.

Time to replace your router

If your device is included in the list of compromised devices (listed below), and you have found that it has been reset, the FBI and NSA recommend that you replace your router as soon as possible.

The GRU could be snooping on unsecured routers to intercept sensitive internet traffic, including credentials and authentication tokens that can be used to compromise personal and work accounts. In particular, GRU has been targeting routers belonging to workers in the military, government, and critical infrastructure industries.

“The FBI, NSA, and co-sealing agencies encourage SOHO router users to change default usernames and passwords, disable remote management interfaces from the Internet, update to latest firmware versions, and upgrade end-of-support devices. Users should also carefully consider certificate warnings in web browsers and email clients,” the NSA said.

Additionally, the FBI and NSA recommended that employees use a VPN when accessing sensitive information. Those that suspect they may have been compromised by the GRU should contact their local FBI field office and file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

A press release published by the US Justice Department detailed that the FBI had created a series of commands that, with court-authorization, it could send to compromised routers.

The commands were “designed to collect evidence regarding the GRU actors’ activity, reset DNS settings (i.e., remove GRU DNS resolvers and force routers to obtain legitimate DNS resolvers from their Internet Service Providers (ISP)), and to otherwise prevent the GRU actors from exploiting the original means of unauthorized access.”

The Justice Department added that the operation did not interfere with the normal functions of the router, nor did it collect any legitimate user data.

The Justice Department included a list of remediations for all routers:

Replace End-of-Life and End-of-Support routers;
Upgrade to the latest available firmware;
Verify the authenticity of DNS resolvers listed in router settings; and
Review and implement firewall rules to prevent the unwanted exposure of remote management services.

“Operation Masquerade – led by FBI Boston – is the latest example of how we’re defending our homeland from Russia’s GRU which weaponized routers owned by unsuspecting Americans in more than 23 states to steal sensitive government, military, and critical infrastructure information,” said Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks of the FBI’s Boston Field Office.

“The FBI utilized cutting edge technology and leveraged our private sector and international partners to unmask this malicious activity and remediate routers. Now we’re asking everyone who has a router to secure it, update its firmware, and replace it if needed. By working together, we can guard against nefarious nation state actors trying to compromise our national security.”

Chinese ‘cellular modules’ could be included in new expansion of federal restrictions

The Trump administration is considering adding Chinese “cellular modules” to its list of electronics that could be banned over national security concerns.

Previously, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had imposed a ban on Chinese labs testing products bound for the US.

Now, the FCC has included drones and routers in expansions to the ban, with the agency mulling over whether to include “cellular modules” in the ban, the Financial Times reports.

Ban could cause major supply chain disruptions

President Donald Trump is today meeting his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing, in a seismic meeting where the pair are expected to discuss everything from trade and sanctions to the relationship between the two superpowers.

Cellular modules are electronic components that allow a device to send and/or receive cellular signals, such as those transmitted on 4G and 5G networks. These devices are included in a wide range of electronics, from Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as those included in smart home tech, medical systems, cars, and industrial control systems.

The potential ban of Chinese cellular modules is likely strategically timed, aimed at putting pressure on China and Xi to contribute productively during the meeting with President Trump.

The Trump administration has seen devices and software manufactured in China as a potential national security risk, gradually stepping up bans and restrictions on products manufactured in China from being used by government contractors and federal agencies. Now, that ban could extend to the domestic market.

Speaking to FT, Charles Parton, a retired UK diplomat and Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), who is an expert on modules, said that up to 70% of the global market for cellular modules is controlled by a few Chinese groups, including Quectel, Fibocom, China Mobile, Sunsea and MeiG.

Like any other electronic device with an internet connection, these devices must be periodically updated in order for them to function and remain secured against threats. However, the FCC fears that these subsequent updates could result in covert surveillance software or harmful malware being installed on devices.

Should the ban go ahead, the fallout for the cellular module supply chain would be enormous as manufacturers seek alternative sources. These sources would likely be unable to cope with the sudden increase in demand, leading to prices for cellular modules to skyrocket, subsequently increasing the costs of goods themselves for consumers.
