The COVID-19 pandemic gives the UK the perfect opportunity to lead on climate change, and cleaner energy must be on the agenda.

With the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left many people working from home, the UK Government now has a unique opportunity to take action and lead the world in its response to climate change through this period.

Of course, the pandemic means we’re not dealing with “business as usual” and it’s right that the Government’s time is dedicated to this unprecedented issue. However, the need for climate strategy to avert the risks of irrevocable climate change aren’t stopping.

Indeed, as Patricia Espinosa, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary commented, "COVID-19 is the most urgent threat facing humanity today, but we cannot forget that climate change is the biggest threat facing humanity over the long term".

The public wants climate action

Following extreme weather incidents in recent years and the growing visibility of climate activists such as Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion, the public today are far more aware of the need for urgent action to halt the negative effects of global warming.

With the country in lockdown, car and flight emissions have dropped significantly, industry has paused, and the public can more clearly see the effects of carbon emissions and air pollution on their lives and the planet. This has only increased the sense of urgency the public feels in dealing with climate change. While emissions from electricity generation in the UK have almost halved on 1990 levels, there’s still a long way to go to meet net zero.

According to the Pace of Change report from Siemens Energy UK & Ireland, 71% of UK consumers believe the Government should be acting faster to develop clean energy. The public want to see the Government take even bolder steps to move the UK towards net zero carbon. They want to see more investment in wind and solar technology across the UK, and interestingly, there is also a call for investment in hydrogen too.

In the energy transition, there is no one silver bullet

The UK Government started in the right direction as one of the first countries to set a national target to reach zero carbon emissions by 2050. But, to reach this target, it means replacing the UK’s existing energy infrastructure, with something just as big and clean.

This isn’t to say the Government hasn’t done anything, small steps on the road to net zero have been taken such as the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) announcing £90 million for projects to tackle emissions from homes and heavy industry, including Europe’s first hydrogen plants.

But, if the UK is going to reach net zero by 2050, low carbon electricity generation will need to quadruple. This means we’re going to go further to create a market for new technologies such as hydrogen power and carbon capture use and storage (CCUS).

What we do know is there is no one silver bullet to answer the difficult question on climate change. Therefore, the Government must invest in all the tools open to the UK. That means embracing a balance of technology and energy sources to develop a flexible power mix.

As traditional power sources reduce in capacity, renewable generation continues to increase. Indeed, throughout the lockdown period in the UK, the solar power industry reported a record high of 11.5% of electricity generation in May. But as we move towards net zero and see more heat and transport move away from fossil power to electrification, we’re going to need to increase the sources of cleaner power generation to meet this demand.

Younger generations are leading the charge on cleaner energy

Unsurprisingly, the Pace of Change study found there is strong demand from young consumers for cleaner sources of energy, with 65% of millennials wanting to reduce their carbon footprint through renewable fuels. Notably, of all the sources, 15% of millennials and Generation Z think that the UK Government should invest more in the hydrogen energy network in order to reach net zero targets.

Hydrogen power offers enormous potential to decarbonise the whole energy chain as a zero-carbon fuel and a reliable energy carrier which can be easily stored and transported. It can be produced by using renewable energy, such as wind or solar to separate water (H2O) into its component elements of hydrogen and oxygen and could be used as an alternative to natural gas.

Across the UK there are already ongoing trials using hydrogen blended with the natural gas supply to decarbonise heat. And, when it comes to using gas to provide electricity generation, high-efficiency, combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants will play an important role. CCGTs currently make some of the cleanest gas-fired power stations. But in the near future, gas stations such as these are also capable of being upgraded to decarbonise power generation through hydrogen power, or CCUS.

This evolution will help further deployment of renewable energy, so that eventually the country’s gas turbines can transition to run on hydrogen. The level of flexibility provided by gas-fired power will complement renewable energy generation on the grid, allowing natural gas to be phased out while significantly reducing carbon emissions from gas power generation on the path to net zero.

Taking this even further, by coupling hydrogen with wind power via an electrolyser we can use the power of wind to create hydrogen for use as a form of energy storage. Hydrogen can also be used to support electrification of the transport sector. As we showed at Goodwood Festival of Speed in summer 2019, a hydrogen fuel cell, produced using wind power can be used as an electricity generation source to charge electric vehicles.

By converting hydrogen to ammonia for storage or transportation, it is also a viable way to store excess renewable electricity generation between seasons – one of the four key scenarios laid out in the National Grid’s 2019 Future Energy Scenarios.

The demand for sustainable energy will only grow

Although the UK is taking its first steps with hydrogen power, our research shows the younger generation are already knowledgeable about it. Clean energy sources are clearly front of mind among the younger generation who will ultimately become tomorrow’s business decision makers. As we continue on the path to 2050, their demand for sustainability and renewable energy will only grow.

The Government must now address the market for all the low carbon energy sources of the future, including how to harness the power of wind to create hydrogen energy if they are to keep pace with consumer demand and ensure the UK meets its net zero targets.

In the future, our children will ask what we did to stop the rising tide of climate change. We must act now to make sure we don’t risk failure for generations to come.

A new Mac Mini has been announced, but unless you're part of the Apple app developing elite, you probably can't get it.

As revealed during the WWDC 2020 keynote, macOS 11 Big Sur brings some big changes with it – not least the fact that future Macs built on Apple's own silicon will be able to run iOS mobile apps natively. Though it's designed to be a seamless porting transition, some tinkering may still be required – and Apple has new kit to help developers through the process.

The new Mac Mini however is part of a 'Developer Transition Kit' that's shipping this week, but will not be available to the average consumer, only developers. In fact, even the developers won't own the kit – it'll be part of a $500 Universal App Quick Start Program, at the conclusion of which the test Mac Mini must be returned to Apple.

ARM Mac Mini specs

The mini Apple computer does give an indication of what to expect from future Macs powered by Apple Silicon however.

It uses Apple's A12Z chip, as can already be found in the 2020 iPad Pro, and comes complete with a 512GB SSD and 16GB of RAM. Beta versions of macOS Big Sur and Xcode come pre-installed, so that developers can test their apps across devices ahead of the consumer launch of the new machines.

The first Apple Silicon Macs should be ready by the end of 2020, but CEO Tim Cook stated that the complete Intel-to-Apple transition will take around two years.

Say goodbye to those pesky messages once and for all

Email spam is something that we've grown so used to these days. It's the downside of your email address being anywhere on the internet, as one innocent newsletter signup leads to a bombardment of offers and unnecessary messages.

Thankfully there are filters in place to deal with a lot of the garbage that floods our inboxes, but there's one area of our lives that's prone to nearly daily spam - SMS.

Yes, in the year 2020 it's apparently still a thing to send an SMS to people. And trust us, we've seen our fair share of SMS spam. Whether it's new property investments, a bank loan offer, 20% of your next food order, or just some other rubbish, it's often hard to deal with the constant flood of spam messages.

There are some apps that offer to help filter your SMS spam and automatically delete them for you, but the problem with these apps is that the SMS message is still delivered to your phone anyway - you just don't see it. That could be a problem if you're travelling and have your phone on roaming - you'll still be charged for the spam SMS reaching you.

If you're an Etisalat subscriber, you can block a particular SMS sender by texting B followed by the sender's ID, to 7726. But if you've got a long list of pesky SMS spam to block, this can really take a while to do, so thankfully there's an easier way to do this directly through Etisalat's website.

How to block SMS spam through the Etisalat website

To get started, log on to your Etisalat Self Care account on Etisalat.ae with your registered user ID and password. Once logged in, on the top right under your account ID, click 'My Etisalat'

Next, click 'My Account' and click the phone number that's registered to you.

You'll then be taken to your main account where you can look at your account usage, bill history, and other information related to your Etisalat account. Here, click the 'Service Details' tab,

There are two things you want to do on this page. The first is to click the toggle next to 'Etisalat Marketing Calls' - this stops Etisalat Customer Care from calling you with offers related to upgrading your phone package.

Below this, you'll find a list of all the SMS messages you've received in the past 7 days. For any sender that you want to block, simply find them on the list and click the 'Block' button. The system will prompt you to confirm the block, and once you select Yes, you'll get an SMS that the block has been applied.

If you ever want to unblock someone in the future, just scroll down the page and you'll see the list of numbers that have been blocked - just click 'unblock' to allow their messages to come through again.

Be cautious with your blocking

A word of caution however - it's not a good idea to block messages from important services such as your bank or utilities provider, as often the same message sender is used to send two-factor authentication codes for online transactions. So just be careful when you block certain numbers, or you might not be able to use these facilities online until you unblock them.

The Galaxy M31s is likely one of the very first M series phones to get the German site's certification.

Samsung appears to be in a hurry to iterate on its current Galaxy M31 smartphone. Its successor, the Galaxy M31s, has been spotted on a variety of certification portals, the latest being Germany's TUV Rheinland. A TUV certification means the product has been tested for safety and found to meet the minimum requirements of the German Equipment and Product Safety Act.

Now, besides the certification itself, the database also suggests that the Galaxy M31s has a 6,000mAh battery which is the same as the Galaxy M31. We didn’t expect any big changes there either. Furthermore, the battery will support 22.5W fast charging, up from 15W on the Galaxy M31. This should make charging the gargantuan battery slightly faster. Apart from that, there’s the TUV Rheinland certification itself which means the handset is well-built and can withstand a good amount of wear and tear.

(Buy the Galaxy M31 right here)

A few days back, the Galaxy M31s was spotted on Geekbench and it suggested that the device is powered by the Exynos 9611 SoC and it may pack 6GB of RAM. This is the same CPU as its predecessor. This too isn’t surprising as we did not expect much upgrades in the new iteration besides some minimal changes in the hardware including the camera setup. In fact, as per reports, it will have the same 64MP camera as the Galaxy M31 and the Galaxy M51.

Speaking of which, Samsung is also working on the Galaxy M51 and it could very well debut with the Galaxy M31s. Speculation is that the handset could be a slightly tweaked version of its Galaxy A51 counterpart.

As far as the launch date expectations are concerned, it could be some time off considering the Galaxy M31 is still a fresh handset launched in February. This combined with a two-month lockdown would’ve very likely frozen the supply chain inventory leading to no sales. Hence, it could be weeks before we see a successor.

Goyer (The Dark Knight, Blade), Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Locke & Key), Cameron Welsh (Ash vs Evil Dead, Krypton), David Ellison (Star Trek Beyond, Altered Carbon), Dana Goldberg (Annihilation, I Am Legend) and Marcy Ross (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan).

Based on the trailer below, we can surmise that the series has absolutely nailed the epic scope and majesty of Asimov's novels. Between this and Denis Villeneuve's Dune adaptation, it looks like 2021 is going to be a special year for science fiction fanatics.

The end-of-financial-year sale is one of the biggest shopping events in Australia, and we’re coming towards the end with just over a week left in June.

This could be your last chance to score a wide range of products at steeply discounted prices, and while lockdown restrictions are slowly being lifted, it’s still a good idea to shop online.

After all, you’ll be able to shop from the comfort of your own home, and have more time to trawl the internet for the best offers. Or, you could let us do the hard work.

TechRadar’s Australian team is on hand to find the best bargains on electronics over the rest of the month, and we’ll list them all right here. There’s a possibility that a lot of the EOFY sales will end before June 30, so you’ll need to be quick to snag a great deal.

EOFY 2020 sale: what and when is it?

Unlike the calendar year, Australia’s end of financial year is June 30. That means, from July 1 to the end of October, individuals and businesses will need to file their tax forms with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Prior to that retailers will be racing to shift old stock to make way for fresh ones, and they’ll be slashing prices on plenty of items, many of which will be tax deductible.

Australia’s EOFY sales traditionally begin June 1 and end on June 30, although many retailers tend to jump the gun, offering a few tempting morsels to lure shoppers in. However, the best EOFY offers are during the month of June, although not all retailers have month-long sales. Moreover, the offers also change through the month, so you will need to keep checking back to see if whatever you need is being discounted or not.

Australia's EOFY 2020 sale: what to expect

If you’re looking to save some money on electronics during Australia’s annual EOFY sale, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve had our finger on the pulse of tax-time deals for a few years now and can safely predict what you can get for a cheaper price.

So, what kind of tech can you find during EOFY sales Down Under? Plenty. From computers to gaming gear, the best flagship smartphones to personal audio. To get an idea of what to expect in 2020, let's take a look at what was on offer last year.

Laptops and PCs: Computing gear has always been some of the most popular items to purchase during EOFY. Manufacturers like Microsoft, Lenovo, Dell and HP will host their own sales on their sites, but you’ll also be able to grab laptops and desktop PCs from major retailers as well, with average discounts of about 15% to 20%. You’ll even be able to snag bargains on accessories as well, with printers, keyboards, SSDs and external hard drives all going on sale during this time.

Keep your devices safe from cyber attacks and save money at the same time with our round-up of the best antivirus deals and discounts in Australia.

Gaming
From Nintendo to Sony and Microsoft – there were plenty of deep discounts on gaming gear last year and we’re expecting to see more of the same again in 2020. The best price we saw on the Switch during EOFY 2019 was AU$379, which isn’t quite as low as it’s gone during other big sales like Black Friday, but it’s still a darn good price. There’ll also be some blockbuster gaming titles available for cheap, if you’d like to expand your gaming library, but keep an eye out for console bundles.

Smartphones and tablets
While there’s usually not a lot of variety when it comes to smartphone discounts, there are always some very intriguing offers to consider during EOFY if you’re looking to upgrade your handset. Last year saw some great discounts on Samsung’s flagships, as well as the Google Pixel 3, so if you’re an Android user, you may be able to score a new phone without having to pay full retail price.

It’s also a great time to see if you need a tablet as well, as more often than not they too are tax deductible if you use them for work.

Home entertainment and personal audio
There were plenty of TVs, sound bars and speakers on sale during the last couple of EOFY sales, and we don't expect that trend to change any time soon. And with some excellent 4K UHD smart TVs already seeing price drops outside of big sales, we're looking forward to seeing how much more affordable they'll be during the 2020 tax-time sale.

It's not just home entertainment setups that you'll be able to save on but portable Bluetooth speakers and the best wireless headphones as well. The premium audio products retail for about AU$500 a pop, but there's a good chance you'll see them drop well below the AU$400 mark. While discounted prices may not match Black Friday offers, tax-time deals still see a decent chunk of change saved on premium products.

Cameras
The EOFY sales are also a great time for photographers – beginners, pros or hobbyists – to grab the latest gear. Last year saw plenty of cameras go on sale, particularly from Fujifilm and Nikon. In 2018, we saw action cameras also drop in price, so keep your eyes peeled for some excellent bargains on DSLRs, compacts and more. If you’re happy with the camera body you already own but need some accessories, we’re also expecting lenses, tripods, filters, bags and SD cards to see some decent price drops as well.

Smart home devices
These nifty voice-activated products have been flooding the market – from internet-connected lights to smart security systems, and the speakers and displays to control them all. Amazon discounted its Echo range of smart speakers last year and we're quite sure that will happen again, along with the other smart devices the e-commerce giant stocks, such as Philips Hue smart lights. You'll also find plenty of retailers offering discounts on Google's range of smart speakers as well.

Home appliances
If you’re looking to renovate your home, the EOFY sales will help you save plenty on the new appliances you’ll need. You can expect to see bargains on not just Dyson vacuum cleaners, but also fridges, dishwashers, washing machines and plenty more.

OnePlus’ co-founders have posted cryptic tweets teasing about the upcoming budget OnePlus smartphone

It is common knowledge that the new budget OnePlus device is about to make its debut soon. And for all we know, it may not be called OnePlus Z or OnePlus 8 Lite but may come with a new identity, OnePlus Nord.

In a bid to build the hype around the highly anticipated smartphone, OnePlus’ co-founders have posted a new teaser on Twitter. True to its characteristics, the teaser does not reveal much about the upcoming smartphone, instead just has a OnePlus logo in a Blue/Cyan colour.

OnePlus 8 vs OnePlus 7T comparison: Worth saving up?

OnePlus 8T charging speed could be more than twice as fast as the OnePlus 8

OnePlus 8 vs OnePlus 8 Pro: what's the difference?

In the tweet, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has said, “Who's ready for something new from @oneplus? 😎 #NewBeginnings along with the new colourful logo which could either mean that the new device may come with a new colour variant or maybe a logo that the company may decide to use on the new OnePlus device’s packaging.

In parallel, OnePlus Director Carl Pei shared a tweet which though had nothing apart from “It’s time to rock the boat again… #NewBeginnings @oneplus”, however, both the co-founders have used the hashtag without actually revealing much about the device.

Further, with most flagship smartphones breaching the $1000 mark, there has been a huge vacuum in the affordable flagship segment and hence manufacturers like Apple got going with the iPhone SE 2020, while Samsung has announced “Lite” and affordable smartphones.

Ever since OnePlus had decided to move towards the premium flagship range, users had been constantly demanding for a budget yet powerful smartphone that offers real value for money and comes with all good features of OnePlus like fast charging solution, fast and slick UI etc. With OnePlus Nord the company aims to answer these questions.

Monopoly of the market and data privacy are two areas of concern for Indian startups as they look set to file an appeal against the Jio-Faebook marquee deal.

      techradar.com

A clutch of consumer internet startups and venture capital investors are reportedly mulling a plea with the Competition Commission of India opposing Facebook’s investment in Reliance-owned digital entity Jio Platforms, citing concerns of data sharing and misuse.

According to a report in Mint that quoted anonymous sources in the know of things, the appeal is likely to be filed with the CCI in a few days, even as the CCI itself is contemplating suo motu scrutiny of the deal. The names of the startups filing the appeal were not given.

It may be recalled that in April Jio announced Facebook’s $5.7 billion (Rs 43,574 crore) investment for a 9.99% stake in the Mukesh Ambani-led telecom major.

The news report had mentioned Naspers Ventures as being one of those likely to approach the antitrust watchdog. The South African internet giant has however denied this.

Apart from outside startups, the deal is also expected impact the companies that Jio Platforms and Facebook are already separately in ties up with.

Facebook has invested in social commerce firm Meesho and online learning firm Unacademy.

Jio, for its part, Jio has made more than ten investments in internet firms such as Fynd, EasyGov and Embibe.

Facebook, in its application to the CCI, had claimed that the deal does not alter the competitive landscape in any relevant market.

Facebook has formed a separate subsidiary company "Jaadhu Holdings" for the deal, and in its filing with CCI, it said: “The Proposed Transaction and the Proposed Commercial Arrangement are pro-competitive, benefits consumers, Kirana (corner) stores and other small and micro local Indian businesses, and take forward the vision of digital India.”

Over 1200 Kirana stores join hands with JioMart, Facebook pilot program

Jio Mart to sell smartphones and electronics

WhatsApp as an e-commerce platform gets unveiled

Questions over data privacy

Right from the day the deal between the two biggies was announced, data privacy warriors have raised a red flag as the two companies have access to vast amounts of data.

Facebook holds more than 328 million users in India, while Jio has around 380 million active users. Reliance Retail and Facebook-owned Whatsapp have also entered into a commercial partnership under which Reliance Retail's Jio Mart platform will support small businesses on Whatsapp. And WhatsApp now has over 400 million users in India.

Justice BN Srikrishna, the chief architect of India's data privacy law, talked about the privacy concerns originating from Reliance Jio-Facebook deal.

He said: "It is a strategic investment. A strategic investment by definition means it is an investment intended to further the business interest of the investee as well as the investor".

The deal was also seen as being discriminatory to competition in the ecommerce segment by monopolizing data. It was claimed that it will hit, in the long run, direct-to-home and over-the-top platforms. Overall, it will be a big blow to net neutrality was one of the arguments.

Talking of net neutrality, Facebook has had a bitter experience once before in India. In 2015, Facebook and Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications forged a tie-up to offer Free Basics in India —a plan that promised free internet but bundled along with a slew of digital products and services.

India’s telecom regulator TRAI, however, found it to be “discriminatory" as it violated net neutrality norms, after which the service was discontinued in the country.

While the two companaies go ahead with the new deal, the ball is now in the courts of the CCI and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to investigate whether the deal is in violation of any law or norm.

Via: Mint

Apple has unveiled iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and macOS 11, showing off the various features that'll come to iPhones, iPads, and Macs in the near future, but right now, we don't know exactly when we'll be able to download them – even the beta versions are only slated for a vague 'July' release date.

While you can't get iOS 14, iPadOS 14 or macOS 11 on your device right now, you can actually sign up for the beta versions already. This means that, when the betas are released by Apple you'll already be most of the way through the process of getting them, and you'll get notified by Apple too.

WWDC 2020 live blog: everything Apple announced

iOS 14 release date, beta, features and supported iPhones

iPadOS 14 release date, features and compatibility details

This means it'll be way quicker for you to get iOS 14, so you can test out all the new features like home screen widgets or tweaks to Messages before everyone else. This also works for iPadOS14, as well as the new macOS 11 Big Sur, tvOS 14, and possibly also watchOS 7 – though Apple doesn't list the latter on its website right now.

So without wasting any more time, we'll take you through the steps of signing up to the iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS 11 and tvOS 14 betas, so you can be the first in line to download the new operating systems.

How to sign up to the iOS 14 beta

The various Apple betas are available to people who join the Apple Beta Software Program(ABSP), and the key thing to know is that you can join it now, cutting out most of the work you'd otherwise need to do when the various Apple OS public betas launch in July.

To join, simply head to the Apple Beta Software Program website, and click Sign Up to go through the stages of becoming a member of the program. If you've already been part of an Apple beta, simply click Sign In.

Now your Apple ID account will be linked to your ABSP account. Next, click Enroll your Device, select whichever operating system you want to join the beta program for, and go through the stages to make sure your device is signed up and ready for the iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS 11 or tvOS 14 beta.

This will involve downloading a special profile onto your device. Make sure it's charged up, and you've backed up your data just in case.

For now, this is all you can do. However, by going through this process now, you've ensured you won't have to do it again when the iOS 14 beta lands, and on top of that you'll get a notification on your device when it's available, so you don't have to keep checking back at TechRadar to see if it's opened up (although you can certainly do that anyway).

So while you won't gain anything extra by doing this now, you'll save time later, and beat your friends to the punch.

Tracking records from Oracle's BlueKai have been discovered in an unsecured database online.

      techradar.com

A security researcher has discovered an unsecured database which contains billions of tracking records about users' activity online.

What makes this discovery particularly interesting is the fact that the database belongs to BlueKai which Oracle purchased for around $400m back in 2014.

BlueKai is a startup that uses website cookies and other tracking technology to follow users around the web. Just based on which websites users visit and which emails they open, the company and others like it can infer a great deal of information about them and marketers use this data to deliver targeted ads that are more likely to be clicked on.

Here's how to avoid unwanted tracking online

Mozilla boosts anti-tracking protection in Firefox update

Internet giants join forces to stop user data being tracked

Security researcher Anurag Sen discovered the unsecured database and reported his findings to Oracle with the help of Hudson Rock's CEO and former TechCrunch reporter Roi Carthy, who served as an intermediary.

Tracking records

After reviewing the data shared by Sen, TechCrunch found names, home addresses, email addresses and other identifiable data in the database. The data even revealed users' sensitive web browsing activity from purchases they had made to newsletters they unsubscribed from.

To deliver more precise ads, BlueKai uses a never-ending supply of data from a variety of sources. The company even uses covert tactics such as allowing websites to embed invisible pixel-sized images or tracking pixels to collect information about a user's system including the hardware, operating system, browser and type of connection they have when they open a webpage. This data can be used to create a unique fingerprint of a person's device which follows them across the internet regardless of which device they're using.

According to an estimate from the site Whotracks.me, BlueKai tracks just over one percent of all web traffic online. The company tracks web traffic on a number of the most popular sites online including Amazon, ESPN, Forbes, Glassdoor, Rotten Tomatoes and others. The marketing firms that pay for access to BlueKai's data though, never see names, addresses or any other personal data which is why the discovery of its exposed database is so revealing.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Oracle spokesperson Deborah Hellinger explained that two companies had failed to properly configure their services and this led to the database being exposed online, saying:

“Oracle is aware of the report made by Roi Carthy of Hudson Rock related to certain BlueKai records potentially exposed on the Internet. While the initial information provided by the researcher did not contain enough information to identify an affected system, Oracle’s investigation has subsequently determined that two companies did not properly configure their services. Oracle has taken additional measures to avoid a reoccurrence of this issue.”

Scientists have come up with a new type of network-on-chip - but it’s not what you think.

When you think about the parts of our electronic devices that consume the most power, the screen and processor usually spring to mind. However, data transfer - either within the device or over the waves (i.e. to cloud storage providers) - is consuming more and more power.

Scientists at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have come up with an innovative technique that promises to reduce the amount of energy consumed during memory-intensive processes by up to 80%. In other words, a fivefold improvement in efficiency over current solutions when bits travel on silicon.

They came up with a new type of network-on-chip that decreases quality a little bit, but also reduces power consumption significantly. This is achieved by adjusting the amplitude of the transmitted signal dynamically; using conventional values for mission-critical tasks to ensure maximum accuracy and lower values for greater power reductions.

Smarter than usual

The example provided by the team was that of imperceptible video quality degradation when full quality is unnecessary, for example when the user looks away from the screen, when ambient light is low or when battery life is short.

Similar scenarios are also applicable to more powerful (and power hungry) platforms such as desktop PCs, NAS boxes, laptops or even servers, but the key opportunity is to enable a full computer vision system - one that can replicate the human vision system while being viable from a power perspective.

The stated goal of the research is to build “a new breed of low-power smart cameras that could operate almost perpetually under the tight power budget extracted from the environment such as via a centimeter-sized solar cell”.

It's unclear when the technology will be rolled out for more practical use cases, but given TSMC - which manufactures chips for AMD, Nvidia and Qualcomm - supports the project for chip fabrication, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was sooner rather than later.

With so many great games still to come for current-generation consoles during the second half of 2020, there exists an awkward limbo where gamers must decide whether to play immediately or hold out for next-gen versions at the end of the year.

Thankfully, publishers and console-makers are trying to make the transition between console generations as smooth as possible.

Microsoft is at the forefront with its Xbox Smart Delivery program, which gives players next-gen versions of selected Xbox One games for free, and now Square Enix has announced that Marvel's Avengers will be available at launch for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X as a free upgrade for owners of the current gen version – either digitally or on disc.

"Featuring extremely fast load times, boosted resolution and fidelity, improved texturing and armor destruction, ray tracing, and more – Marvel’s Avengers will look and play great on next-gen systems," reads Square Enix's press release.

Xbox Smart Delivery will carry your save data over to Series X

Here are all the Xbox Series X games announced so far

PS5 vs Xbox Series X: what we know about both consoles

What you can expect on PS5

Though the free upgrade has been announced for both upcoming consoles, the press release only describes what players can expect from the PS5 version.

"The PlayStation 5 experience will be seamless and dynamic, fully utilizing the ultra-high speed SSD, the PS5 DualSense advanced haptics, and immersive spatial audio. To fully customize their visual experience, PS5 will also provide players with their choice of Enhanced Graphics Mode or High Framerate mode."

More information about the PS5 version of Marvel's Avengers was revealed on the official PlayStation blog, with developer Crystal Dynamics' chief technology officer Gary Snethen offering the inside scoop.

"PS5 greatly lifts the performance and graphics bar for consoles. The new GPU allows us to increase our texture resolution, push a higher level of detail farther from the player, enhance our ambient occlusion, improve our anisotropic filtering and add a variety of new graphics features such as stochastic screen-space reflections with contact-aware sharpening," said Snethen.

Long story short, this is great news for those who want to get a jump on Marvel's Avengers before the new consoles arrive late 2020. For more information on the game itself, Square Enix will be holding a Marvel’s Avengers War Table digital stream on June 24 at 10:00am PDT.

Windows 10 version 2004 is causing a number of performance issues for users that have Malwarebytes 4.1 installed on their systems.

Following the release of Windows 10 2004, users have reported experiencing performance issues and even crashes when Malwarebytes 4.1 is installed on their systems.

The official Malwarebytes support forum has seen numerous users reporting problems with MBAM 4.1 after Microsoft released its latest Windows update back in May.

The issues caused by having the security company's software installed include random freezes, general slowness, video stuttering, blue screen of death (BSOD) crashes and Windows 10 becoming unresponsive.

Microsoft admits Windows 10 May 2020 Update already has a load of problems

This could be the most secure VPN around today

"Corona antivirus" infects victims with malware

However, not all users running Windows 10 2004 and Malwarebytes' software seem to be affected but there are enough requests for help on the company's forums to indicate that there is a problem.

Potential fixes

In a post on Malwarebytes forum, one user explained that they were experiencing issues after installing Windows 10 2004. However, they were able to mitigate these issues by disabling the software's ransomware protection feature.

To resolve the issues users are having, Malwarebytes also released a new beta version (4.1.1.71) of its security software at the beginning of June.

If you're a Malwarebytes user that is having similar issues, you can install the new beta version by going into the software's settings and enabling the “beta updates” setting under the General tab. After enabling this setting, you will need to check for new updates to install the beta version and its components package.

However, if you're still experiencing issues after installing the beta, then you should probably head over to the Malwarebytes forum for additional help.

Microsoft dropped a bombshell announcement today in the middle of Apple’s WWDC 2020 event: the company will shut down Mixer in July and redirect all traffic to Facebook Gaming.

In an interview with The Verge, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer says the move is going to help gamers get more of what they want to see in a more seamless way and says that the service was struggling to keep pace with Twitch and YouTube.

“We started pretty far behind, in terms of where Mixer’s monthly active viewers were compared to some of the big players out there,” Spencer said. “I think the Mixer community is really going to benefit from the broad audience that Facebook has through their properties, and the abilities to reach gamers in a very seamless way through the social platform Facebook has.”

The transition will take place on July 22, at which point all Mixer streams will redirect to Facebook Gaming. Microsoft says all its existing streaming partners will be able to move to Facebook Gaming and immediately be granted partner status with Facebook’s Level Up Program.

The trade-off here is that Facebook will begin implementing Microsoft’s xCloud game-streaming service on Facebook Gaming: eventually, the platform will enable PC gamers to jump directly into any game they’re watching on a stream.

It could also mean that the Xbox Series X will use Facebook Gaming instead of Mixer.

Will the Xbox Series X use Facebook Gaming, YouTube or Twitch?

Before today, it seemed like Mixer on Xbox Series X was a shoo-in. The streaming service has been integrated into the Xbox One for over two years now, and it didn’t sound like that would change with the Xbox Series X.

Now, though, it’s anyone’s guess as to which streaming service Microsoft will include on Xbox Series X.

The partnership with Facebook does hint at a future where we see Facebook Gaming replace Mixer on the next Xbox console – but it could also open the door for Microsoft to partner with YouTube and/or Twitch, too.

The best-case scenario is that Microsoft will continue to support all the game-streaming services and will give you that option every time you hit the new share button on the Xbox Series X.

Whether or not that will be the case, however, we'll just have to wait to find out.

Apple’s midyear WWDC event is largely dedicated to developers, but the opening showcase is all about what’s coming for consumers. And while this year’s WWDC 2020 keynote didn’t reveal any hardware per se, it had plenty of exciting software changes coming to Apple’s lineup of devices.

While no devices were shown off, the event had one giant announcement: going forward, the tech giant will be ditching Intel chipsets in its Mac lineup in favor of one designed by Apple itself. That’s right: just like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch lines all use in-house chipsets, the Mac family will get proprietary silicon.

But there’s still plenty to get excited about with operating system updates. For instance, there are some meaty quality-of-life changes coming to iOS 14 that will auto-organize your app collection, enhance group chats, enhance Maps with greener navigation options, and make it far easier to download relevant apps while you’re out and about. And it’s finally catching up to Android by adding picture-in-picture video viewing.

iPadOS 14 will get some of those iOS perks itself along with more features that take advantage of tablet screens, like ‘sidebars’ filled with useful shortcuts and more robust menu choices. WatchOS 7 finally gets sleep tracking, as well as more workout modes and better customization of watch faces. Heck, it’ll even monitor how long you’re washing your hands.

MacOS 11 Big Sur, as it’s named, gets interface refinements and tweaks to Finder and the Toolbar, as well as a Control Center a la iOS and iPadOS for quick shortcuts to brightness and other features. For Apple TV, tvOS 14 is adding picture-in-picture and support for specialty Xbox controllers like the Xbox Elite 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller.

That’s a lot of upgrades, both long-awaited and unanticipated-but-welcome. Here’s a breakdown for every corner of the Apple ecosystem that’s slated to get new tricks.

Everything we heard at WWDC 2020

Mac’s Apple chipset: one for the whole Mac family, eventually

The big announcement of the day was saved for the Mac family, which is officially shifting away from Intel chips to use Apple-designed silicon in future Apple desktop machines. The first Mac to use an Apple chipset will be released before the end of 2020, while the transition for the full device lineup will take two years, Apple CEO Tim Cook said. The company is still pledging to support Intel-powered machines with new software upgrades for years.

Apple didn’t undersell the importance of the moment, and compared this transition to three prior Mac turning points in the device’s history: when it shifted to PowerPC chipsets, then when it introduced MacOS X, and finally when it adopted Intel chipsets.

Why change silicon? Apple credited its own chipsets as crucial to the success of its device line, starting with the A4 Bionic chipset in the iPhone 4 and onward with the Apple Watches and iPads released over the years. The new Mac chipsets will be a family of SoCs for the entire Mac line. Like its other system-on-chips, Apple is focusing on performance and power management with a neural engine for machine learning and scalable architecture.

iOS 14: quality of life, media watching, and getting around

iOS 14 has gotten the lion’s share of improvements at WWDC 2020. Most importantly, Apple has generously noticed how terrible we all are at organizing our pages and pages of apps – now, your final page on the Home Screen will be auto-generated app collections, and if you want, you can hide pages of apps you don’t really use. Yes, it feels a little Android-ish to us, too.

You can also insert mini-apps called Widgets into your Home Screen pages – think of them as the abbreviated apps you’d see on your Apple Watches, which you can customize in the Widget Gallery. iMessages has improved, too, adding some work chat-inspired features like inline replies and pinned conversations.

Siri will no longer take up the full screen, opting instead for a small popup at the bottom of the display, and can now send audio messages. And another inherited-from-Android feature: iOS 14 will get picture-in-picture video viewing. Huzzah.

Maps has been upgraded to offer cycling directions, which will be added to a handful of big cities at first. Cycling will give you ideas of elevation and suggested routes, while a new dedicated EV mode will track routes from EV recharging station to recharging station.

Carplay has some upgrades too, including new backgrounds and, in select vehicles, allowing users to use their phones in place of car key fobs. The first car to take advantage of this will be the newest BMW 5 series: in the presentation, we saw someone unlock their doors via NFC on their iPhone. This goes beyond one linked device: it allows you to share ‘keys’ and vary access with conceivably anyone with an iPhone. This feature will be coming in iOS 14 but will also be made available in July for iOS 13 users.

Finally, iOS 14 will get improvements to the App Store in the form of new App Clips, which are small digital pop-ups prompting users to download the right app for a service. These can be triggered via NFC – like waving your iPhone in front of a smart scooter station – but they can also be prompted by text or QR code. Best of all, you don’t have to necessarily go through the rigmarole of registering with a new service so long as they accept Apple Pay and signing in with Apple.

iPadOS 14: more real estate, some iOS 14 perks

While iPadOS has been out since late 2019, we haven’t seen it shift course much from iOS. iPadOS 14 will bring more features and perks to take advantage of tablet screens.

Some of these had obvious appeal: Apple showcased new sidebars for apps that offer shortcuts and handy perks – think of similar toolboxes and panels in Adobe apps – along with expanded menu dropdowns.

There are less flashy methods to expand the real estate, like adding art and lyrics when listening to music in full-screen mode. Other tweaks are simply functional: instead of taking over the full screen, incoming calls will be reduced to just a notification tab at the top – a change that’s also coming to iPhoneOS 14. That goes both ways: iPad will get those nice widget and app auto-organizing features coming to iPhoneOS 14, but we imagine they’ll have a greater effect on an iPad screen.

There are Apple Pencil upgrades, too. A new feature called Scribble lets you write in text fields (like, say, Safari’s search bar) and your penmanship will automatically be converted to typed text. There’s also assistance for your handwritten notes that ‘fixes’ your drawings into shapes – make a wobbly arrow and iPads will straighten it out for you. There’s also new text recognition features: you can select written words and even copy blocks of them to paste into other apps, where it will be converted to typed text.

AirPods: smarter device switching and surround sound...even in motion

New firmware upgrades will improve automatic switching between your Apple ecosystem devices: if you’re watching media on your iPad and listening through AirPods, but get a call on your iPhone, your AirPods should automatically switch over..

The AirPods Pro also get a ‘big if true’ update that simulates directional surround sound using algorithms, audio filters, and tinkered frequencies. What that means: if you physically move your head, the accelerometer and sensors in the Pro keep the sound oriented around your device, allowing you to tilt your ears around a cohesive soundspace. This will supposedly adjust even if your entire body is shifted – like, say, if you’re riding a bus.

Apple Watch 6: Sleep tracking at last. And hand washing?

WatchOS 7 has refined how developers can craft complications, enabling more combinations and watch faces to help users create their own ideal watch faces. Apple’s also made it easier to share watch faces via a new feature, Face Sharing. When you see a watch face you like, click the button prompt and it will download – as well as prompt you to get any missing complications.

Just like in iOS 14, watchOS 7 includes improvements to Maps that add cycling directions, with elevation changes and navigation prompts that appear as large, easy-to-read complications.

Workouts are getting an upgrade, too, adding Dance as a total body workout, which tracks popular (yet broadly-defined) dance styles like Hip Hop and Latin. How? Advanced algorithms detect the difference when wearers use just their arms, just their legs, or combinations of the two. There are more workouts, too, like core training, functional strength training, and even cooldowns for post-workout sessions. The corresponding Activity app in iOS 14 has also been redesigned.

But the big addition is sleep tracking, which uses machine learning to detect patterns and feeds the info into the Health app on the Apple Watch ad linked iPhone. The feature prompts users to establish their own ‘wind down’ routine to end the day. In the morning, wearers can be woken up with either audio tones or haptic vibration for quieter personal alarm. They’re greeted by a wake-up screen with status updates to start your day like temperature, notifications – and crucially, battery life.

Finally, watchOS 7 is getting another health feature of sorts: handwashing detection. Your Apple Watch will harness machine learning and analyze audio to monitor whether you’re washing your hands for the duration of a full 20-second countdown, with fun sounds and a ‘well done’ at the end.

MacOS: Big Sur

The next macOS update is officially named Big Sur, taking its title from yet another classic California locale. But with the new version comes a bunch of changes. Many of these are interface tweaks, aspiring for more clarity. Windows will use depth, shading, and translucency to convey a hierarchy, which will come to both light and dark modes.

Other tweaks are just as svelte: Mac apps are becoming more squared-off (‘squircles,’ if you will), with a new sidebar and toolbar for Finder. But other shifts are bigger, like macOS inheriting the Control Center from iOS, allowing users quick access to brightness and other settings. There’s also a notification center that lists notifications and widgets, too, like the ones headed to iOS 14.

Maps will also get improvements in macOS Big Sur, with indoor maps and Lookaround (Apple’s street view) and other iOS 14 upgrades like cycling and electric vehicle station navigation.

Safari: refinements

Safari is also getting some improvements, with site privacy reports that show what they’re accessing. Safari will monitor your saved passwords and compare them against data breaches, which Google already does with Chrome.

As other browsers get smarter about tab management, Safari is introducing new features: hovering over one, for instance, shows a preview of the page.

tvOS 14: Xbox gaming time

In tvOS 14, gaming will get multi-user support, while support will be added for specialty the Xbox Elite 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Picture-in-picture is coming to Apple TV, too.
