Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to download and install the Windows 8.

The first step in getting an early look at Windows 8 is to visit Microsoft’s download site. Launch your browser, type the following address into your Address bar, windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/download, and then press ENTER. Click the Get It Now button and then click the Download Windows 8 button on the following page. (If you’d like, you can input your email address and region and click the privacy terms agreement check box to subscribe to Microsoft’s Windows 8-specific newsletter.)

Unless you’re overwriting your current Windows installation, we recommend burning an ISO or installing using a flash drive.

When the installer finishes downloading, launch it and click Run when you see the Open File Security Warning. The software proceeds to check your computer’s compatibility with the Windows 8 and displays a report of the number of installed programs that will work fine and the number that won’t.

To view the report, click See The Compatibility Report and take note of any items in the Need Your Attention category. These applications won’t work natively in the Windows 8. You may have to reinstall these applications after the Windows 8 setup completes or find versions that support Windows 8. In our test, the only application that was a problem was the software that accompanies our AMD Radeon HD graphics card, but AMD offers a Windows 8 - compatible version of the driver. To print or save this page for later reference, click the appropriate buttons at the bottom of the screen. Click Close when you’re ready to proceed and then click Next in the setup wizard.

The procedure for changing your PC’s boot sequence in the BIOS Setup Utility will vary among PCs.

When you see the Windows 8 product key, write it down and then click Next to initiate the download. When the download completes, the utility will spend a few moments checking the download and getting files ready.

Next, you will see a screen that gives you the option to Install Now, Install On Another Partition, or Install Later. Click the radio button for your preferred option and then click Next. For the remainder of this tutorial, we’ll follow the Install On Another Partition procedure. This way, you don’t risk overwriting your current Windows with one that will expire shortly. If you select Install Later, the setup wizard will close. You can relaunch it anytime by double-clicking the Install Windows shortcut on your Desktop.

To install the Windows 8 on another partition, you’ll need to burn the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) file to a DVD or use a USB flash drive that is 3GB or larger. Click the radio button adjacent to the option you want and then click Next. We chose to use a flash drive, so the rest of this tutorial will follow that procedure.

Plug a 4GB or larger USB flash drive into an available USB port and the setup wizard will detect it. If more than one flash drive is detected, make sure you click the appropriate one and then click Next. A pop-up dialog box will warn you that all data on the flash drive will be deleted if you proceed. Click Yes to continue. The setup wizard will then create a bootable USB Flash drive that will install the Windows 8 on your PC. Once complete, you’ll get another glimpse of the product key.

Now, restart your PC and get ready to access your BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) Setup Menu by pressing the designated key during boot. The navigation and option titles in the BIOS Setup Utility differ greatly among PCs, so the following steps will also vary. Pressing DELETE, F1, or F2 will typically get you into the BIOS, but the correct keystroke will often appear on-screen during boot. Once in the BIOS Setup Utility, you need to make the USB flash drive your first boot device, so look for a menu option such as Boot Sequence, Boot Priority, or Boot Menu. Frequently, the BIOS Setup Utility displays how to change the boot priority once you’ve accessed the correct menu; common ways to change boot sequence include highlighting the USB flash drive option and pressing the Plus key (+) or PAGE UP key to move it to the top of the list. Save changes and reset, typically by pressing F12.

As the system boots from the USB flash drive, the Windows 8 fish logo appears on-screen followed by the Windows Setup language and locale options screen. Click Next to proceed. Click Install Now on the following screen and then input your Windows 8 product key on the next screen. Click Next to review the license terms, click I Accept, and then click Next.

Signing in to your PC with a Microsoft account gets you access to apps from the Microsoft Store, cloud-based photo and file access, and more.

On the Which Type Of Installation Do You Want screen, click Custom (unless you plan to overwrite your current Windows installation). Click the storage partition upon which you plan to install the Windows 8 and then click Next to complete the install. It may take 20 minutes or more depending on your hardware specs, but when the installation finishes, you’ll be able to personalize your new Windows 8 system, configure security and updating settings, and link your installation to a Microsoft account.

When you’re finished, however, you’ll get a real feel for the direction Microsoft plans to take the personal computer later this year and beyond.

You don’t get many templates in iBooks Author, but the ones you do get are beautifully designed and flexible enough to cover most kinds of textbooks. You can easily modify templates and save them for future reuse, and a number of third-party firms are now offering iBooks Author template packs in the Mac App Store.

iBooks Author has Pages’ familiar Inspector, Media, Colors, and Fonts palettes as well as the Text Box, Shapes, Table, and Charts toolbar buttons. Watch out for the new Orientation button at the left of the toolbar - some templates show different content depending on whether the iPad is in portrait or landscape orientation. For example, in the Elementary Algebra template, picture galleries that appear full-sized in landscape are reduced to thumbnail size in portrait.

Although it has Pages’ Inspector for formatting text, iBooks Author isn’t really designed as a book-writing app: it’s a better idea to create your text in Pages. Word, or a dedicated text editor and then import it - especially if you also want to publish in formats or on platforms that iBooks Author doesn’t support. You can choose whether to maintain the text styles in your Word or Pages documents or override them, and embedded images and even tables are imported without any hassle. As in Pages, little guides appear to help you align objects for perfect positioning.

One of iBooks Author’s most useful features is its Widgets button. This lets you add an image gallery, audio or video file, multiple-choice questions, a Keynote presentation, an interactive image, a 3D object, or a Dashboard widget. Third parties are already writing their own widgets - for example Panotour virtual tour software now creates iBooks Author-compatible widgets. You can also use anything written for Dashboard on OS X, which means you could embed the Dictionary widget.

The Widgets button gives you another way to add content : HTML.

Widget files are just HTML5 packages, and that means you can add almost any kind of HTML code to your presentation. The potential is enormous, but there are a few restrictions - for example, you don’t get access to the local file system as you would with a desktop browser. Apple has provided a detailed how-to on its website.

The iBookstore comes with some rules: You can’t publish a book containing other people’s work, and you’ll need an ISBN number and an iBookstore seller account. To sell your book rather than giving it away you’ll need banking and tax information too. Your book can’t be larger than 2GB, or 20MB to allow 3G downloads. You must also create a separate sample version of the book. It’s up to you how much of the full book you include, but a free sample is mandatory.

Bookstore submissions are subject to Apple’s approvals process. That could result in some tricky decisions: for example, should Apple decide whether a book is too rude or too controversial, or should it let the readers decide? Unless Apple decides to check every line of every book, or adopts an overly cautious censorship scheme, you can expect the odd controversial title to slip through the net and cause an online storm.

Angry Birds’ historic success has made it a big target for copycats, but it’s been difficult for other creators to successfully mimic its beguilingly simple formula - and it must be harder still for Rovio to try and expand its own design without losing the magic that made it such a smash.

That’s part of why it’s so pleasing to see Angry Birds Space launch as a carefully considered and well-designed extension of the brand, rather than a quick attempt to draw some easy cash from the series’s legions of fans. After a pair of follow-ups - Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio - that were essentially just location changes, a shift in both design and aesthetic is welcome here, even if the new mechanics don’t fully revolutionize the game we know and love.

What was once a quaint dispute between the titular avians and some well- shielded pigs has become an intergalactic struggle in Angry Birds Space, and while many of the mechanics remain intact - including birds with varying abilities, explosive TNT boxes, and the almighty slingshot - you’ll now have to contend with the pull of gravity on round, planet- centric levels. Toppling a structure is rarely now a matter of just aiming and firing; instead, you may need to launch a bird at a planet and watch as it’s whipped around toward targets located on the other side.

Angry Birds Space introduces its changes slowly but surely, with the first episode - containing 30 of the initial 60 levels - rarely requiring much in the way of deep thought or strategy. But the second half of the set digs into more complex arrangements of pigs, structures, and space rocks, with many of the puzzles likely to require numerous attempts to come out on the other side, let alone snag three stars in the process. The game also adds boss fights to the series, tasking you with whipping birds at pigs in mechanical contraptions to conclude each episode.

Amazingly, aside from some oddball bonus stages, the core feeling here is much the same as ever - and most of the birds are just variants of past ones. The thrill has expectedly faded a bit across four iterations, but when Angry Birds Space is at its best, I still found myself glued to it, and felt incredibly satisfied after cracking advanced puzzles. One nagging new issue, though, is that the larger stages make it tricky to see without zooming out too far, which presents its own problems.

As is Rovio’s routine, the separate iPhone and iPad apps are nearly identical save for varying screen proportions and the inflated price point on the latter, and though it’s a bit obnoxious to have another episode available for purchase on day one (instead of being bundled with the game), it’s worth a buck to extend the fun out past the small initial bounty of levels.

The bottom line, It’s not an entirely transformational entry, but Angry Birds Space successfully taps fresh ground while maintaining the series’s winning formula.

Similar options exist for URL endings (tap and hold the .com key in Safari), degree signs (tap and hold the 0 key), and other punctuation marks (test out the apostrophe, quotation mark, hyphen, and period keys).

Switch Apps in a Flash

Facebook : Text “Hello” to short code 32665 (for the U.S. and Canada) and follow the link in the reply to complete the setup. You’ll be directed to the web version of Facebook, where you can select notification settings and whether you want your mobile number to be visible to friends. When you’re done, save that short code in your Contacts as Facebook.

Google+ : Go to your settings page in Google+ and scroll to Notification Delivery. Add your mobile number, hit Send Verification Code, and Confirm. If you don’t want to receive text messages from Google+, make sure to select Don’t Notify Me. Then add the short code you see underneath (33669 for the U.S.) in your Contacts as Google Plus.

In this article, we will take you step-by-step through the Wi-Fi connection process. Note that instructions for some models may vary slightly from our guidelines because of small differences among interfaces and operating systems. If in doubt, access Settings, locate a Wi-Fi or wireless networks area, and select your wireless network.

Android Tablets

To access the Wi-Fi settings on a tablet that runs Android, you can either touch the Settings icon on the Home screen or open up the App screen and select Settings. Next, touch Wireless and Networks and select Wi-Fi. If your tablet runs Android 4.0, you’ll also need to slide the Wi-Fi switch to the On position. Click WiFi Settings and your tablet will then scan the area for available wireless networks. If you see a lock icon next to the name, you’ll need to know the security credentials to connect to it. To connect to a specific network, touch the network name, and if prompted, enter the password for the network.

You can also add a Wi-Fi network to your device’s list so that it will remember the credentials and automatically connect to it when the network is in range.

To do so, navigate to the Wi-Fi Settings and select Add Network. Enter the network name, sometimes referred to as the SSID (Service Set Identifier), and select Save. If you want your tablet to no longer automatically connect to a network, open the Wi-Fi Settings screen, touch the network name, and select Forget from the dialog box.

iOS

With the iPad, you can click the Settings app and select Wi-Fi. If the Wi-Fi is turned off, touch the On/Off icon to switch it to the On position. Your iPad will then scan for available networks and display them under Choose A Network. Touch the name of your preferred connection, and if it’s password-protected, enter the password. You’ll know if a Wi-Fi network is password-protected if a padlock icon appears next to the network’s name. When the iPad is connected, the Wi-Fi icon next to the network name will turn blue. In the Wi-Fi menu, you’ll be able to see the signal strength of the various networks.

BlackBerry OS

If your tablet runs the BlackBerry OS, you will be able to connect to Wi-Fi by tapping the Wi-Fi symbol in the Status bar. Then, you can tap the network you want to connect to and enter the security password, if necessary Once you’ve enter the authentication info, touch the Connect button.

Make LibreOffice load faster

You can get a slight speed boost by disabling Java. Go to Tools, Options and select the Java entry on the left. Untick the option to ‘Use a Java runtime environment’ and restart the software. This change can affect databases and some of the wizards, but is easily re-enabled if you run into problems.

Turn off auto-complete

LibreOffice has an auto-complete tool that guesses the words you want as you type. If you don’t like this feature, you can disable it. Go to Tools, Autocorrect Options. Click the Word Completion tab and untick ‘Enable word completion’ and ‘Collect words’.

Add notes to documents

You can add Post-it-style notes to any document by positioning your cursor in the appropriate spot, and then going to Insert, Comment. Annotations are displayed on the right-hand side.

Most people who move to Windows 8 will do so when they buy a new PC or laptop. However, since the Vista Capable’debacle, Microsoft has worked hard to keep down the system requirements for successive operating systems, meaning older computers could upgrade. Windows 8 is no exception: here’s what you need to run it.

The issue of minimum specifications for a new Windows operating system has been a hot topic ever since Vista enjoyed a less-then-auspicious start to life. Desperate to generate some excitement ahead of the appearance of its late-appearing OS, Microsoft created the label ‘Vista Capable and encouraged PC manufacturers to append it to XP systems that met the basic minimum specification for running Vista.

The trouble was that when Vista was finally launched, it required a great deal more than the basic system requirements suggested, in order to run well. As with any new OS, Vista had issues with compatibility, and the occasional bug. But this was compounded by scores of disgruntled XP users ‘upgrading’ underpowered systems, and losing stability and speed in the process.

‘Vista Capable’ became the name of a huge class action lawsuit in the US, and a byword for how not to launch a new Windows OS. Once bitten, twice (and now a third time) shy, when Microsoft launched Windows 7, It made great play of the fact that It would run successfully on any system that was happy running Vista.

This may not have done much to dispel the notion that Windows 7 was just the operating system that Vista should have been, but it did manage the expectations of new computer purchasers. Microsoft and partners such as Intel are now at least as focused on providing a stable, lightweight system that doesn’t gobble power as they are on adding new features. So once again, as a new operating system is released, Microsoft has kept the minimum requirements the same. So if you have a PC or laptop that happily runs Vista or Windows 7, you will be okay with Windows 8.

Windows 8’s specifications

In order to run Windows 8, your PC or laptop must have a 1GHz or faster processor. Obviously, as with all computers, a better processor will lead to an Improved overall experience. In most cases Windows 8 laptops and PCs will run on AMD or more likely Intel processors, specifically Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors launched in April 2012, and they offer more efficient power consumption, and should therefore run well in thin and light systems. Microsoft is also set to release a version of Windows that can run on ARM’s SOC (system on chip) processors. Windows RT is aimed at portable devices, and shouldn’t be confused with the main desktop and laptop version of Windows 8.

The 32bit flavour of Windows 8 requires at least 1GB of RAM, and 2GB is required for a 64b1t installation. If speed is important to you. don’t skimp on RAM. Get as much as you can, but remember that a 32bit system can use only 3GB RAM. You’ll need at least 16GB of hard disk space to run a 32 bit installation or 20GB for a 64bit system.These are fantastically low figures, but should be taken with a pinch of salt. They suggest the bare minimum required, and once you start saving things you’ll soon run out of space. An SSD rather a traditional spinning disk will help to keep your PC up to speed.

Windows 8 requires a Microsoft DirectX 9 or higher graphics system. If you’re not a hard-core gamer, you may find that integrated graphics suffice, especially if you have an Ivy Bridge processor.

To use touch, you’ll require a tablet or a monitor that supports mufti-touch, and to access the Windows Store and download and run apps, you’ll need an active internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768. To snap apps, a screen resolution of at least 1366x768 is required.

To install apps from the Windows Store, you’ll need to sign up for a Microsoft account.

Every computer user will, from time to time, face an error message. Some are completely harmless and can he dismissed, but others will keep coming hack and annoying you without ever explaining what has gone wrong.

In this, we will list the most common error messages you are likely to see during day-to-day use of Windows. The Blue Screen of Death

The so-called ‘Blue Screen of Death’ (BSOD) - a blue screen with white text - occurs when there has been a serious problem with the computer. Once it appears, there is no way back into Windows without restarting the computer. Each BSOD will be accompanied by an error code, of which there are far too many to list here. Since Windows automatically restarts the PC when it experiences a BSOD this code is easy to miss.

To change this, right- click the My Computer icon, select Properties and from the Advanced tab click Settings under Startup and Recovery (in Vista or Windows 7, click the Advanced System Settings link to reach this screen). Remove the tick from the Automatically Restart box and any BSODs will remain on screen, allowing you to jot down the error code. Entering this code into an internet search engine will usually provide information on what is causing the error and how to fix it.

Buffer overrun detected

This error message usually means a program has tried to use more memory than Windows was expecting it to. Clicking OK will close the error message and terminate the offending program. These errors can be caused by badly written software, but they can also be a sign of something more dangerous: buffer overruns can sometimes he used by malicious programs. If you see this message on a regular basis, make sure your security software is up to date and perform a full anti-virus and anti-spyware scan.

There is an IP address conflict

You will see this error in a pop-up box when there is a problem with your home network. Each computer on a network has a unique identifier known as an IP address. This error message appears whenever two computers or other network devices - everything that is connected to the network has an address - are trying to use the

same IP address. If you have just added a new device to the network, check its settings. In most cases all devices should be set to get an address from the router using a system called DHCP. If you have not added anything new, restart the router first and restart every network device so each is given a new IP address.

Missing shortcut

This message appears if you try to open a shortcut icon (identified by a small arrow in the bottom-right corner of the icon) but Windows cannot find the file or program that it refers to. This could be because it has been deleted, uninstalled, moved or renamed. To fInd out which file the shortcut is linked to, right-click the icon and select Properties. The file it’s trying to run will he listed under Target. To resolve this problem, locate the file you want the shortcut to he linked to, right-click it and choose Create Shortcut from the Send To menu. Windows should detect the drive and start installing it. If it doesn’t, head to Control Panel, choose Add Hardware and select the automatic scan option.

The compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted

This message appears when you attempt to open a zip file. Ifyon downloaded the file from the internet, downloading the tile again will normally solve the problem. However, many manufacturers do not submit their software to Microsoft, and installation guides will frequently tell you to ignore this message and click ‘Continue Anyway’.

We suggest making a mental note of the message and installing the driver anyway - if you find it causes problems, uninstall it. [PROGRAM] has encountered a problem and needs to close. The easiest way to do this is to go into your BIOS by pressing Del or F2 when you start your computer, and alter your system’s date and time from there. This means that your whole PC will be effectively living in the past, so be aware that this may affect the performance of other tools, such as your security software.

Use Microsoft Office 2010 for six months

Some trial versions of Microsoft Office 2010 need to be activated with a licence after 30 days, but you can use them for free for longer by ‘rearming’ (resetting) the software. Although you can do this manually (and legally) through the Windows command prompt, it’s a lot simpler to use Office Trial Extender, a free tool that does the hard work for you. It lets you rearm Office 2010 up to five times for a maximum of 180 days free use. You’ll need to run the program just before each 30-day trial period expires.

Re-register using different details

You can extend your free trial with many online services by cancelling your subscription before the period is up and re-registering with a different email address. For example, Netflix lets you try its movie- streaming service for free for 30 days, during which time you can cancel your membership with a few clicks and at no charge. You can then register again using another email address (you can use the same card details) to start your 30 days over again. This won’t work if you sign up to Netflix through Facebook, so choose ‘I don’t have a Facebook account’ on the homepage.

Here we have put together top reasons why you should upgrade to Windows 8. It’s worth noting, though, that the new operating system is a major redesign, so you’ll want to consider carefully before taking the plunge.

Metro user interface

The Metro interface represents a radical redesign for the operating system. It looks similar to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 interface, and instead of the normal desktop with icons there are live tiles. These will launch an application like an icon, but also have the ability to show live information such as new emails and up-to-date weather. Overall, the interface is easy and intuitive to use, especially with a touchscreen. Different gestures, either with touch or a mouse, will do clever things such as close applications, access menus, and more.

Task and file management

A couple of smaller but handy tweaks have been made to the Task Manager and the File Manager. The latter consolidates multiple file operations into one window, with the option to pause or cancel each one individually. There’s also a real-time graph that displays the transfer speed. The Task Manager has also has been enhanced and is split into Apps and Background processes. A new tab called App History includes a Metered network section that shows which apps have been using the most data.

Device compatibility

Microsoft has designed Windows 8 to work on different devices - it’s not just for your PC. No matter whether the device is a PC, a laptop or a tablet, the new operating system should work flawlessly. Furthermore, the Metro Interface will scale to that device’s screen size and resolution to provide a uniform experience. If you want consistency across all your computing devices, then Windows 8 is a great reason to upgrade.

Backwards compatibility

If you’re worried about things being too different, then the good news is that the operating system Is backwards compatible with Windows 7. Microsoft has included the’Classic’desktop alongside the Metro interface. This takes you to a traditional desktop where you can use all those applications that weren’t designed for the Metro interface. The only difference is there’s no Start button. You get the best of both worlds by upgrading, bringing you the new features of Windows 8 without taking away the familiarity of the traditional desktop.

Apps

The operating system takes a more mobile approach when ft comes to apps. with the Windows Store. This is where you can browse, download and install apps designed for the Metro interface. The selection on offer is currently limited, but it’s expected that the number will be significantly higher as time goes by after Windows 8’s full launch. A lot of apps will display in full-screen, with one example being Maps. This uses Microsoft’s Bing Maps service to provide locational search and directions on a global scale (see page 20). Windows 8 also comes preloaded with a number of Metro apps including People, Calendar, Photos, Music, Messaging and Video.

Cloud Services

Windows 8 has a cloud focus to it, which is a tempting feature. Microsoft stores all your settings in the cloud, so whenever you log on to a Windows 8 machine you will have it looking and working the way you like. Other elements of the cloud system include pulling your email from Gmail and viewing all your photos from Facebook.

Touchscreen support

The most obvious change is that the Metro interface has been designed with touch control in mind, making it an appealing upgrade for those with an existing touchscreen device such as an all-in-one PC. If you don’t have such a machine, then you might want to get one specifically for Windows 8 even though it means a hardware purchase on top of the operating system. Traditional keyboard and mouse input is still supported, though, so you don’t necessarily have to shell out for a new computer immediately.

Lock screen and picture password

With this version of Windows you have the option to use a picture lock screen similar to that of a smartphone. To login you’ll need to make three gestures; choosing from straight lines, circles and taps. The lock screen can also be customised with your own photo, time, date and app notifications.

Hard drives and SSDs are both used for PC storage, but the former is composed of discs, called platters, and a metal arm, called an actuator arm that reads and writes data as it moves over the surface of the spinning platters. As their name suggests, solid-state drives have no moving parts. Hard drives are much more commonplace, relatively inexpensive, and come in massive capacities, up to 4 TB (terabytes).

SSDs are a newer technology, generally cost more than hard drives, but are capable of achieving significantly faster read and write speed. Hard drives are most commonly 3.5-inch devices, though 2.5-inch hard drives are also common and used for notebooks and compact PCs. SSDs are almost exclusively sold in the 2.5-inch form factor. Hard drives also come in 1.8-inch form factors, but these are fairly uncommon.

How does a hard drive interface with a PC?

Hard drives for sale today most likely feature the SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interface, which uses a narrow L-shaped plug for data communication and a wider L-shaped connector for power. Older hard drives, called EIDE (Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics), use a 39- pin interface for data communications and a 4-pin power connector. The data cables for EIDE hard drives are typically wide and flat, which is why they’re typically referred to as ribbon cables.

What is the difference between SATA 2 and SATA 3?

Like most standards, SATA is constantly evolving. Of the hard drives you can buy today, SATA 2 and SATA 3 are your main options. SATA 2-based hard drives have a peak throughput of 3.0Gbps (gigabits per second). SATA 3-based hard drives can achieve up to 6Gbps throughputs. Keep in mind that to support these speeds, the hard drive must be plugged into a SATA port on the motherboard that is capable of supporting the same speed. For SATA 3 hard drives, it’s also important to use cables that are designated for 6Gbps throughput.

What are RPMs, and why should I care?

Hard drives read and write data as the platters inside spin. The faster the platters spin, the more quickly the required disc sector will arrive at the actuator arm and the read/write head. High RPM (revolutions per minute) hard drives offer lower latency and faster overall performance.

The most common speed for hard drives is currently 7,200rpm. Hard drives that spin at 5,400rpm are also very common. Hard drives that target the enterprise market or enthusiasts can spin at 10,000rpm and 15,000rpm, but such hard drives are significantly more expensive than the slower-spinning alternatives.

When should I use an HDD or SSD?

As previously mentioned, hard drives have an advantage over SSDs when it comes to capacity and price, but SSDs are quickly catching up in those areas. If you find yourself considering using both an HDD and SSD in your computer, don’t make the mistake of using them interchangeably. Due to HDD’s slower performance and higher capacity, it makes the most sense to use them as photo, music, and video storage, largely because those files don't require massive throughput to display or play back. Storing the operating system and a few frequently used applications on an SSD can significantly speed your overall computing experience.

Click the ‘See all bestsellers’ link for the full list, which usually comprises classic, out-of-copyright works; stories by new and unknown authors; and cut-down, promotional versions of commercial books. You can search Gutenberg by title, author or subject, and browse the list of the most popular books, which invariably includes works by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

To download a book, just click its title and choose your desired format. The simplest is Plain Text, which is fully compatible with all e-readers, but for the best experience you should choose ‘Kindle (no images)’ for Amazon’s device or EPUB for other hardware readers. Open Library boasts more than one million free ebooks, dating back to the 11th Century. Although the Google eBookstore, mostly has paid-for books, it does contain a ‘Best of the Free’ selection of classic titles, with the full range available at the main Google Books site (http://books.google.com). You can download books in EPUB and PDF format. If you want to read them on your Kindle, you’ll need to convert the files to MOBI format using free ebook software such as Calibre. You can save yourself time and effort when hunting for free content for your e-reader by using the speedy ebook search engine Inkmesh. The excellent eReaderIQ.com keeps track of all the free ebooks that are available for the Kindle through Amazon and notifies you as soon as new titles appear in the store. The details are sent in the form of an email digest, either once or twice a day, from which you can click straight through to Amazon to download the books. Recent additions are also listed by date on the eReaderIQ.com website.

Usefully, the service ignores public- domain titles, so you don’t get unnecessarily excited about yet another free edition of Pride and Prejudice, and includes already available books that have just added a Kindle version. The site also lets you set price-drop alerts for ebooks you want to buy but feel are currently too expensive, and create a watch-list of favourite books that you’re waiting to be made available.

Troubleshoot Common Disc Burning Problems.

There are several common reasons your computer’s disc-burning feature might not work properly. Let’s check the simple things first. Does your PC have more than one CD and DVD drive? If so, make sure the disc you want to record to is inserted into the correct drive and that the drive in question is compatible with the type of disc you are using. Also, check whether the disc has any speed limitations. It’s worth making sure that the disc is the right way up, too - it’s often tricky to tell with unbranded or budget discs. Finally, check that the disc hasn’t been used before - if the underside is two different colours it may have been. A rewriteable disc can be wiped and used again, but a write-once disc will not be able to be written to again.

Burner not recognised?

If your drive is not being recognised by some applications, you can check if it is properly installed in Windows by going to Start, right-clicking on My Computer (or just ‘Computer if you’re using ‘Windows 7 or Vista) and selecting Manage from the list that appears. In Windows 7 and Vista you may also need to dick Continue in the User Account Control (UAC) box that appears; but in XP you’ll be taken straight to the Computer management console. Here, click on Device Manager in the left-hand column and then click the ‘+‘ sign next to where it says ‘DVD/CD-Rom drives’. If your drive is listed here and doesn’t have an exclamation or question mark beside it, then it is properly installed. You could try right-clicking on it and selecting Uninstall from the list. Restart your PC and Windows will re-install the drive on start-up. Check the program that didn’t recognise the drive before to see if it now does. If it’s still not working, check the program manufacturer’s support website to see if there’s a downloadable update that might fix the problem.

Noisy drives

If you find your CD and DVD drives are a little noisy, it may be due to their fast read and write speeds. You can slowdown your drive during disc burning (see Burning speeds’ opposite), and this may also make your drive more reliable. If your drive is only noisy when reading or writing to a certain disc, however, it’s more likely to be the disc’s fault. The CD might be warped. Try putting it on a flat surface and hold one side down with your thumb to see if the other side lifts up slightly. If it does, you may need to replace the disc or copy it and stop using the original. Another thing that can cause noisy drives is disc labelling. If you have stuck a paper label on your disc this may be unbalancing it.

Open a jammed CD/DVD drive

If for some reasons the tray won't open on your CD or DVD drive. there is a quick and easy way to rescue a disc that’s trapped inside. All optical drives have a small hole on the front of the drive that acts as a kind of emergency eject system. All you need to open the tray is a straightened paper clip. Switch off your PC and unplug it from the mains first, Where possible, you should remove the drive from your system altogether. Rend the paper clip so that a section of it is straight and then locate the small hole on the front of the disc drive Insert the wire into the hole and press it in gently but firmly. The door of the drive should come loose now. Gently pull it out and remove your disc.

Burning Speeds

The latest CD and DVD drives can burn at very fast speeds - up to 52-speed for CD writing and 22-speed for DVDs. When you burn a disc (in Nero or Roxio Creator, say), your software may not let you write atthe high speeds cIa med by your drive. This may be because the blank discs you are using are not ccmpat]ble with higher-speed burning. Check the packaging of the discs to see what speeds they can be burned at Even if both disc and drive are compatible with high-speed burning, you may want to consider lowering the speed manually, since the process is much more reliable at lower speeds. Audio files

lf a music CD doesn’t act as you would expectwhen used in something other than a computer, double-check that the right application was used to bum the disc and that it was created using the correct settings. There are two types of music CD: an MP3 CD and a standard audio CD. An MP3 CD is a data disc with raw MP3 files on it, while an audio CD is a specially formatted disc that works just like a shopbought compact disc. You can lit more music on an MP3 but not al CD players are compatible. Audio CDs should play on any CD player ordrive, though its worth noting that some CD players don’t like CD-RW discs.
