CDMA2000 is a 3G family of mobile cellular technologies that includes 1xRTT, EV-DO Rev 0, EV-DO Rev A and EV-DO Rev B, and it competes with GSM technologies. In the U.S., CDMA2000 is currently used by two major carriers: Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Mobile managers need to know that CDMA2000 is being replaced by LTE and WiMAX 4G technologies.

Mobile application strategy: Rich mobile platforms vs. mobile Web-based services

When deploying mobile applications to your mobile devices, there are two fundamental choices available: Rich mobile platforms or mobile Web-based services in the cloud. The first is native application execution directly on the mobile device – that device being essentially a mini computer with a very rich application environment that includes storage, networking and communications, and a graphical user interface. On the other hand, the mobile Web-based services/cloud-computing model has obvious appeal, as these rich-platform mobile devices probably have a serviceable browser, and there's a good chance that your client/server infrastructure is already fairly Web-centric. As we'll explore this month, though, neither of these alternatives is a slam-dunk and, for the near term anyway, workable solutions are likely to involve both.

In a perfect world, your entire workforce would carry one or two well-chosen mobile devices that could be managed easily and effectively through a single platform. Unfortunately, few IT managers enjoy this luxury – most must deal with an increasingly diverse potpourri of employee and employer-owned devices, spanning multiple operating systems and product generations. In this tip, we examine emerging industry strategies for managing diverse mobile devices without going crazy or breaking the bank. Learn to define what you can and cannot support without prompting workforce mutiny.

For many enterprises, mobile device management (MDM) is an afterthought – a band-aid to mend the operational and security gaps created by workforce mobility. Loosely coupled systems can address near-term challenges, but long-term success will require some degree of integration between MDM and the rest of your IT infrastructure and processes. Here, we consider several "touch points" where MDM must (eventually) dovetail with past and future IT investments.

Femtocells are all the rage, and these tiny cellular radios promise to improve in-building cellular coverage and are primarily targeted at the home-user. However, some vendors are now building enterprise femtocell solutions. Should you consider femtocell deployment in order to improve your cellular coverage? This article identifies the key questions you should ask before you buy a femtocell solution.
