A Saudi Arabian app that can be used to track women and prevent them from travelling will be investigated by Apple, its chief executive has said.

In an interview with NPR, Tim Cook said he wasn't aware of the Absher app but would look into it.

The app, which offers access to government services, has been criticised by human rights groups.

Democratic senator Ron Wyden has called for Apple and Google to remove it from their stores.

Women in Saudi Arabia need to get permission to leave the country from a male guardian, usually a father or husband.

The Absher app, which is designed for a range of government services, such as renewing driving licences, makes the process of allowing or prohibiting travel a lot easier, and it can be done via a smartphone.

Originally designed for the Ministry of Interior, the app has been in use for several years and downloaded more than a million times.

An investigation from website Insider exposed how it was being used by male guardians to register wives, sisters and daughters to either restrict or permit international travel.

The man receives a notification if a dependent woman attempts to leave the country.

Human Rights Watch told the publication: "Apps like this one can facilitate human rights abuses, including discrimination against women."

In an open letter to both companies, in response to the report, Mr Wyden wrote: "It is hardly news that the Saudi monarchy seeks to restrict and repress Saudi women but American companies should not enable or facilitate the Saudi government's patriarchy."

The app has also been used by some women to secretly change the settings on their male guardian's phone so that it allows them to travel, the Insider reports.

Google has not responded to requests from the BBC for comment.

Facebook on Wednesday announced it is piloting new tools in India that can prevent misuse of profile pictures. The social giant said that the feature was rolled out after feedback they received from users in India. The new feature gives more control to users by limiting who can download and share their profile pictures.

Aarati Soman, Facebook Product Manager, announced the new Photo Guard tool, aka Profile Picture Guard. Additionally, she revealed Facebook is also introducing designs to profile pictures which the company's research has shown helpful in deterring misuse. The feature is expected to rollout to users in more countries soon which means that this will be exclusive to users in India for some time. Facebook says users in India will start seeing a step-by-step guide to add an optional profile picture guard. Once applied, the profile photo can no longer be downloaded, shared, or sent in a message on Facebook.

Additionally, people who are not friends on Facebook won't be able to tag anyone, including themselves, in your profile picture. Facebook also says that it will prevent others from taking a screenshot of your profile picture on Facebook where possible. This feature is currently available only on Android devices.

With the new Photo Guard, users who opt for the new tool will see a blue border and shield around their profile pictures as a visual cue of protection.

If you are excited about Facebook's new photo guard feature then follow the below steps to secure your profile photo. Note, not everyone will be able to see the feature immediately, as it is still being rolled out slowly in the country.

Method 1
Refresh your News Feed, and you may see a message (pictured below), prompting you to Help Protect Your Profile Picture

Tap Turn On Profile Picture Guard
You will then see a screen explaining the benefits of the Profile Picture Guard
Click Next
You will then see your current profile photo, complete with the shield symbol, with the option to Save

Method 2

Open your Facebook profile.
Tap your profile photo
You will then see the option (pictured below) to Turn on profile picture guard
If selected, you will get the option to Save, and then see your profile photo with the shield symbol

As for the ability to add a design to your profile photo, the option shows up as a prompt on your News Feed, just like Method 1 above. You will see the message Add a Design to Your Profile Picture, followed by the option to Add Design. Once you tap this, you can then select from a range of design overlays, and then click Next. The steps are pictured below.

Facebook reveals it developed the new profile picture guard tool in partnership with Indian safety organisations like Centre for Social Research, Learning Links Foundation, Breakthrough and Youth Ki Awaaz.

"Based on preliminary tests, we've learned that when someone adds an extra design layer to their profile picture, other people are at least 75 percent less likely to copy that picture," said Soman. Facebook says that these designs will make it easier for users to report misuse of their profile picture.

What’s This Facebook Photo Bug?

These 3rd Party apps legitimately got access to a finite set of photos, but this bug allowed them to get access to those photos that they were not supposed to see.

These photos include the ones from the Facebook stories as well as the pictures that a user uploaded on Facebook but never posted it. This is quite frightening. The affected users have no idea who might have their photos now.

The incident of the Facebook photo bug happened on the dates ranging from 12th September to 25th September.

Yes, this means that the bug was alive and kickin’ for 12 days.

“We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification,” said Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter’s vice president of User Services said in a press statement. “We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience.”

If you believe your Twitter account is of public interest and should be verified, you can start by filling out a form on Twitter. In order to complete the form, users must have specific information already listed: A verified phone number, a confirmed email address, bio, profile photo, header photo, birthday (for accounts that are not company, brand, or organization accounts), website and Tweets set as public in Tweet privacy settings.

Hackers who were allegedly responsible for the popular augmented reality game, Pokemon Go to go offline over the weekend have threatened of an even bigger attack in the coming days.
A hacking group, PoodleCorp, has announced that it will attempt to take Pokemon Go offline on August 1 through a series of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, which will apparently deny access to the players.

“Just was a lil [sic]test, we will do something on a larger scale soon,” said Twitter user XO, who claims to be the leader of PoodleCorp.

However, the game’s creators Google startup, Niantic Labs claimed Saturday’s outage was “Due to the incredible number of Pokemon Go downloads, some Trainers are experiencing server connectivity issues. Don’t worry, our team is on it.” But, PoodleCorp insisted that it was behind the problems.

“We take the servers offline because it is popular right now and nobody can stop us,” Twitter user XO said. “We do it because we can, nobody can stop us and we just like to cause chaos. We chose August 1 so we have time to relax and not care about doing anything.”

The PoodleCorp group claims it will take Pokemon Go offline for about 20 or so hours, essentially the whole day, using the same method they have used on other attacks. The hacking group allegedly has access to a botnet that consists of 600,000 devices, which include DVRs and dedicated servers. These types of botnets can easily be bought or rented on the dark web so there’s no real hacking going on.

PoodleCorp’s Twitter account first posted a status update on June 23, a day after their first attack against WatchMojo. Their other targets include League of Legends, LinusTechTips, StreamMe, iiSuperWomanii (Youtube channel), Battle.net, 21savage, RedMercy (Youtube channel), LeafyIsHere (Youtube channel), h3h3 (Youtube channel), and finally Pokemon Go (July 16).

Poodlecorp, of course, isn’t the first group of hackers that have made big claims and then failed to follow through. However, Twitter user XO warns that this time it’s different, “because we made a promise.” It has also warned Pokemon addicts: “Find something else to do because if that’s all you have to do you need a life.”
