TIPS & NOTES

In English, the names of the days of the week come from planetary names or from Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian deities:

• Sunday – Day of the Sun.
• Monday – Day of the Moon.
• Tuesday – Day of Tiu.
• Wednesday – Day of Woden.
• Thursday – Day of Thor.
• Friday – Day of Frigg.
• Saturday – Day of Saturn.

In Portuguese, the word feira comes from the Latin ‘feria’ – ‘free day’. So we have the words férias and feriado for ‘holidays’.

In the third century AD, Constantine sanctified all the days of the week with the name – ‘feria’ – to signify a Christian feast day or religious festival. So the seven days became… ‘Prima feria, secunda feria, tertia feria, quarta feria, quinta feria, sexta feria’ and ‘septima feria’.

In the fourth century ‘prima feria’ became domingo – Lord’s Day (Sunday) and ‘septima feria’ became sábado – Sabbath (Saturday).

Portuguese is the only modern language that preserves this ecclesiastical style of naming weekdays.

PERDER

São dois os verbos mais comuns em inglês que empregamos quando queremos dizer “perder”: “LOSE” e “MISS”. Dependendo do objeto perdido você deve usar um ou outro. Esquisito, não é? Pode até ser estranho, mas é assim que funciona, pois o estudo das línguas não tem lógica mesmo. Depois da revolta e/ou perplexidade causada por essa constatação, você me pergunta: “Mas qual é a regra?” Eu respondo: “Não tem regra!” Você: “Mas quando vou saber quando usar ‘LOSE’ ou ‘MISS’?” Eu: “Leia o texto do verbete ‘Fazer’ onde são apresentadas as diferenças entre ‘MAKE’ e ‘DO’.” Enquanto isso, seguem alguns exemplos: “LOSE HOPE” (perder a esperança), “MISS CLASS” (perder a aula), “LOSE ONE’S TEMPER” (perder a paciência), “LOSE HEART” (perder a coragem), “MISS AN OPPORTUNITY”, (perder uma oportunidade) etc.

Os phrasal verbs to wake up to e to wise up transmitem uma idéia similar a to get real, significando “dar-se conta de, acordar”:

• When Tom woke up to the fact that he had been deceived, it was too late.
• Quando Tom se deu conta de que havia sido enganado, já era tarde demais.
• It’s about time Jeff wised up to the fact that his chances for promotion in that company are very slim.

COMMENCEMENT = começo; formatura

A formatura não deixa de ser um começo; o começo da vida profissional, de uma nova carreira, de uma nova fase, etc. É provavelmente com esse sentido que a palavra “COMMENCEMENT” é empregada para significar “formatura” na língua inglesa. Lembre-se de que, embora não seja usado com a mesma freqüência de “BEGIN” e “START”, o verbo “COMMENCE” existe e quer dizer “começar”.

Do and make
Do and make are very general words and can sometimes be confused. Here are some tips.

1. We use do when the exact activity is not stated, especially with words like thing, something, nothing, anything.

• What are you doing over the weekend?
• I feel like doing nothing for a change.

2. We use do to talk about work and jobs.

• What do you do for a living?
• She did her homework before dinner.

3. We often use make to talk about building, constructing, creating. SYN – create, develop, produce, generate, form.

• He once made a small fishing boat with his brother.
• Let’s make the dinner first and then we can make a cake.
• They made plans to leave the country.

4. Do and make are important verbs which have hardly any meaning on their own, but which are part of many fixed expressions and common collocations. For example:

• Do
  • the shopping, the cooking, the ironing, the washing-up, good, harm, business, one’s best, a favour, sport, exercise, 80 miles per hour, crosswords, a play, drugs.
• Make
  • a meal, a bed, a journey, an offer, a difference, a fuss, conversation, certain, sure, arrangements, a suggestion, an impression, a decision, a mess, an attempt, a point, an effort, an excuse, an exception, a mistake, a noise, a joke, a phone call, money, a profit, a fortune, love, peace, war, a fire, progress.

TEACHING CHUNKS OF LANGUAGE

Teaching Chunks of Language is definitely much more than a book on teaching vocabulary. It is extremely informative, user-friendly and interesting material which throws light on an area which has always proved hard for both students and teachers: putting into practice the principles of the Lexical Approach, which advocates that in order to communicate clearly and fluently in English, one should be able to deal with the so-called chunks of language, i.e. ready-made units of language which sound more natural to native speakers.

The book is organised into four chapters: Chapter 1 offers some theoretical background and briefly but clearly explains the reasons why we should teach chunks in the EFL classroom. It also explains how this task can be accomplished. Chapter 2 has a great number of activities which are aimed at helping mainly pre-intermediate to advanced students notice chunks. Chapter 3 delves deeper into the topic and presents more activities which will help students remember chunks. Chapter 4 aims at consolidating chunks by reinforcing the importance of reviewing so as to learn vocabulary more effectively.

The book also has a section containing photocopiable sheets for most of the activities in Chapters 2, 3 and 4. Furthermore, it is also possible to download extra activities for chunk learning from the publisher’s website.

Teaching Chunks of Language is a book which I gladly recommend as it certainly is a valuable tool and breaks new ground in the learning/teaching of vocabulary.

*O nosso ICMS é tributo de competência dos Estados e do Distrito Federal. É imposto sobre valor agregado. No Brasil, o IPI (tributo federal) e o ICMS (tributo estadual) têm sistemática típica de tributo sobre valor agregado, já que a ambos se aplica a compensação do valor devido em cada operação com a importância cobrada nas operações anteriores. Calcula-se o valor do imposto na saída, e desse montante são deduzidos os tributos da entrada. Assim, o imposto acaba por incidir efetivamente sobre o valor agregado a ele pelo agente econômico.

Nos Estados Unidos, o excise tax é imposto cobrado sobre a industrialização, venda ou uso de mercadorias. Para que o interlocutor norte-americano, ou conhecedor desse sistema tributário, entenda do que estamos falando, deve-se fazer o transporte do conceito de ICMS para o contexto estadunidense chamando-o de Brazilian state excise tax. Evidentemente, a correspondência não é exata, mas tornará clara a natureza do tributo. O mesmo se diga do IPI (tributo federal), que poderemos chamar de Brazilian federal excise tax.

Na Europa, o imposto sobre valor agregado é amplamente aplicado. Por isso, se o leitor estiver diante de operador do direito oriundo de um ordenamento jurídico europeu, como a França ou a Inglaterra, poderá designá-lo Brazilian state value-added tax (o mesmo podendo fazer fazer com o IPI: Brazilian federal value-added tax), fazendo-se, assim, entender claramente.

AGE BEFORE BEAUTY
[traduzido ao pé da letra, "idade antes da beleza"]

• “Age before beauty”, Alice said, holding open the door for Sara. “Pearls before swine”, Sara replied.
  
• “Idade antes da beleza”, disse Alice, segurando a porta aberta para Sara. “Pérolas aos porcos” (com duplo sentido em inglês, “pérolas antes dos porcos”), respondeu Sara.

O estereótipo tradicional do gentleman inglês sempre dá preferência para as mulheres e costuma dizer Ladies first, principalmente quando banca o cavalheiro e gentilmente segura a porta aberta para uma lady. A velhice também tem prioridade sobre a juventude, mas a expresão insincera, porém inofensiva, age before beauty é usada como brincadeira por alguém que segura a porta para outro entrar primeiro.
