Summer Special Events!

I love going to Special Events in our National Parks. For me, visiting a National Park is a Special Event all by itself, but when there is something special happening at a National Park, it makes the 'Venture all the more memorable. Here are a few Special Events happening in National Parks across the country. Be sure to check with your local National Park to see if they are having any Special Events that might bring you back to the Park. From concerts to walking tours to special hours, you are sure to find something that will add to your Summer Fun. Where will YOU go next?!

Summer Night Cruise Tours of Liberty Island
On eight Thursday nights during June, July and August, Liberty Island in New York will be open to the public. The evening tours will be on June 3 and 10; July 8, 15, and 22; and August 5, 12, and 19 and there will be only 1,200 tickets available for each night. Ticket prices include round-trip ferry transportation from Battery Park, a full dinner on Liberty Island, and some great interpretive programs led by Park Rangers and Volunteers. You will be able to tour the grounds but will not be allowed into the statue. Best of all, you can spend as long as two hours on Liberty Island at NIGHT! To make your reservations, CLICK HERE.

Summer Saturdays Return to Federal Hall
Summer Saturdays are back by popular demand. Federal Hall National Memorial in New York will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following days: June 5, 12, 19, and 26; July 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31; and August 7, 14, 21, and 28. This summer, the National Park Service teams up with the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy to offer the guided audio walking tour New York Freedom Trail. The tour will be offered at 11 a.m. each Saturday. To learn more about the New York Freedom Trail, please visit www.nyharborparks.org.

Sunday Concerts in the Park
The concert series kicks off at Peter Strauss Ranch in California on June 13 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Come out for an afternoon of rousing music and family fun! Join Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and Topanga Banjo and Fiddle for an afternoon of Southern California bluegrass, old-time, and folk music in the mountains. The free concert series will continue throughout July, August, and September.

Music by Moonlight
Cowboy singer/musician Skip Gorman and Celtic singer and
poet Connie Dover will combine their down-deep, heartfelt interpretations
of the traditional music of the American West, Ireland, and Scotland under
the brilliant light of the full moon on Saturday, June 26 at 8:30 p.m.
Their performance is part of Full Moon Nights Summer 2010 at White Sands
National Monument in New Mexico. Full Moon Nights are held in the monument’s amphitheater
and are free, although the monument’s entrance fees of $3.00 per person 16
years and older apply.

Take A Hike On National Trails Day!

June is Busting Out All Over and there are LOTS of great things to do as we start the Summer Travel Season. I know you love hiking as much as I do and this Saturday is National Trails Day. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our National Trails and have a great time outside.

Take a guided hike at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park or how about a visit to Valley Forge National Historical Park. There are lots of great hikes planned in National Parks all across the country. You can find out where there is a National Trail near you at this link to the NPS National Trails webpage.

I know you are sure to have a great time, whatever you do, as long as it is somewhere OUTSIDE. Take a hike and enjoy all that the beginning of the Summer Travel Season has to offer. Be sure to take lots of pictures and send me one of your favorites. I might just put it into my next newsletter!

What 'Venture Do You Have Planned For Memorial Day Weekend?

It's that time of year again, when we start thinking of coming out of our caves and 'Venturing in to Summer travel plans. With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner, what kind of 'Ventures are you planning for the Summer?

Will it be a trip to one of our Natural National Parks, or maybe to an Urban Park. How about a National Battlefield or maybe a National Historical Park? There are LOTS of options and many of these parks are within a couple hours drive from where you live.

A great way to find a park is with the NPS "Find A Park" search tool on the NPS website www.nps.gov. Use the Advanced Search Tool. I love to use the Search Parks By Topic. From Caves to Geysers to Presidents to the Civil War to Westward Expansion to Wildflowers, you are sure to find a Park that interests you!

Take advantage of all the National Park System has to offer from all the great information in the Visitor Centers to guided Ranger tours and talks. There is so much to do and learn!

I love planning my summer trips. Be sure to include all your family in the planning process. It will make the 'Venture all the more fun when you actually get to your destination. If you are looking for something new, check out the new National Park Getaways pages on the NPS website. They highlight a new Park each week, with LOTS of great information and links. Another great place to start is on the WebRangers Page. What a great way to start the Summer by planning and learning about your next 'Venture!

Plan Your Summer 'Venture With The NPS!

Well, you know how much I love planning my next 'Venture and now we have a great place to begin the research. The National Park Service has just launched a new website just for us "planners". I know I am going to use this site as I plan all my summer 'Ventures this year. You can find all kinds of great information, like what to do , where to stay, special events and what parks have Junior Ranger Programs. You can also find out about National Park Institutes and Field Schools. Best of all, you can check out which days throughout the summer the National Park Service is going to waive entrance fees and plan your 'Ventures around those times.

If you asked me that questions a couple of years ago, when I first wrote Teddy's Travels - America's National Parks, I wouldn't have known what you were talking about, but now I do and I love to Tweet! My Twitter name is tedrickdebear Pretty easy to remember, right?!

I recently got a Twitter account and LOTS of new friends are Following me. I am Following lots of new friends, too, and we all love to share information about America's National Parks. Twitter is where I Tweet about our National Parks just about every day. It's a great way to learn about National Parks you haven't visited (yet) and it may just help you decide where to go on your next 'Venture!

Signing up for a Twitter account is really easy. All you need is an email address and you are ready to go. When you start Following me, be sure to check out all of the people I follow. They all have interesting things to share about the National Parks. If you like the things they Tweet, you can follow them, too! That way, you'll get their tips and thoughts whenever they post a Tweet. There are LOTS of National Parks who Tweet. Be sure to Follow the parks you are interested in visiting to learn more about what is happening in their parks. Once you go to a National Park, share your 'Venture by posting a Tweet!

WOW! Has it been that long since I made a post to my blog? That's what happens when you spend all your time on Twitter! :-) I'm ashamed of myself... Time to get back to work and let you know about all the great things happening in our National Parks.

Free Entry Weekends in the National Parks!

Did my title get your attention? I thought it would. The best part is that it's completely TRUE!

This summer, the National Park Service is opening up the Parks for free on three weekends. That means that if you enter any National Park with an entry fee, you get in FREE!

Here are the dates: June 20-21, July 18-19 and August 15-16.

So, here's your chance to visit a nearby Park without any cost. Of course, if you're camping or staying in a hotel or going on a guided tour, those fees will still be in effect. But, depending on the Park you're visiting, you could save between $5.00 -$20.00 per car or up to $10.00 per person arriving on foot, bicycle or motorcycle.

I know that this summer my traveling plans are tight because my budget is tight, too, and this will be a real savings. On top of the National Park Service's great news, some NP concessionaires will be giving away great stuff, too. It's all about helping us get outside and enjoy our country!

National Trails Day is this Saturday!

I love to go hiking. There is always something exciting to discover around the next bend in the trail.

This Saturday, June 6, is National Trails Day and the theme for this year's celebration is "Take In the Outdoors". There will be lots of fun things to do on our National Trails. Here is a link to all the different ways you can be a part of the celebration.

Best of all, 22 new National Recreational Trails will be added to the system this month, in 13 different states! That will add over 525 new miles to the NRT system. Did you know there are over 1,050 trails in the NRT system with over 12,500 miles of trails to enjoy? WOW!

Here's the list of new trails added to the National Trails System:

Alabama
Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail – This 7.5 mile multi-use, handicapped
accessible asphalt and boardwalk trail winds through the pristine coastal
forests within the City of Orange Beach and Alabama’s Gulf State Park.

California
San José Trail Network – Three connecting trails – the Guadalupe River
Trail, the Highway 237 Bikeway, and the Coyote Creek Trail North – provide
16.4 miles of recreation opportunity in San Jose.

Illinois
Moraine Hills Trail System – The four components of this trail system in
Moraine Hills State Park total 10.2 miles for cycling, mountain biking,
hiking, jogging, and cross-country skiing.

Indiana
Rivergreenway – This 23-mile linear park in Fort Wayne and New Haven is
located along the banks of the St. Marys, St. Joseph, and Maumee Rivers.

Kansas
Pioneer Nature Trail – This 1.3-mile trail at Council Grove Lake is managed
by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Two trail loops features upland
woodlands, tallgrass prairie, and the remnants of buffalo wallows.

Massachusetts
Great Barrington Housatonic River Walk – Volunteers built and maintain this
half-mile of artfully crafted riverside walking trail and canoe access in
downtown Great Barrington.

Nebraska
Niobrara Scenic River, Ft. Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge Section – This
5.6 mile river segment offers visitors a unique scenic recreational
floating experience. The river cuts a deep canyon in the limestone rocks
that underlie Nebraska’s famed Sand Hills.

New Jersey
Hackensack River Greenway through Teaneck – This pedestrian walkway and
nature trail connects three parks and offers views of the river, cityscape,
and mountains. Award-winning interpretive signs designed by local artist
Richard Mills are found along its 3.5-mile length.

New York
Chenango Canal Towpath Trail – This 6-mile trail is ideal for walking,
jogging, horseback riding, bicycling, and cross-country skiing along the
placid waters of the historic Chenango Canal in and near the town of
Madison.

Feeder Canal Towpath Trail – This 9-mile linear park adjoins one of the
last surviving in-use portions of the original New York Canal System, the
Glens Falls Feeder Canal, joining Queensbury and Kingsbury.

Historic Champlain Canalway Trail – An approximately 1.75-mile segment of
the projected 58-mile long Canalway Trail corridor, this trail in Halfmoon
appeals to bird watchers, history buffs, and health-conscious
recreationists.

Pennsylvania
Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails – This 4-mile multi-use rail trail in
Hazleton forms the core of a future metro area-wide trail system. It
features scenic views, rare plant communities, picnic areas, and
interpretive signs. Numerous partners have provided park benches, bike
racks, exercise stations, and flower beds.

Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway - 6 to 10 Trail – This
7.75-mile trail follow the remnants of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, an
engineering landmark that lifted canal boats over the Allegheny Mountains
in the mid-1800’s.

Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway - Juniata River Water
Trail – For 184 miles this water trail parallels the route of the
Pennsylvania Main Line Canal which operated primarily in the 1830’s through
1850’s.

Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway - Lower Trail – The 16.5
mile multi-use Lower (rhymes with “flower”) Trail features many historic
canal era remnants with interpretive signs telling the history of the
Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. It is the center link in the Pittsburgh to
Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway.

Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway - Path of the Flood Trail
– This 6.5 mile trail follows the path of the Great Johnstown Flood of
1889. For part of its length, the trail joins the 2.5-mile Staple Bend
Tunnel Trail which follows the remnants of the Allegheny Portage Railroad
to the first railroad tunnel built in the U.S., the 901-foot long Staple
Bend Tunnel.

Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway - Roaring Run Trail –
Following the Western Division of the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal along
the Kiskiminetas River, this 4-mile trail is rich in historic
transportation themes and recreational opportunities.

Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway - West Penn Trail – The
12-mile West Penn Trail offers many scenic, natural and historic assets,
including 100-year old stone arch railroad bridges and parts of the
Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. Forty interpretive signs enrich this trail
experience.

Susquehanna River Water Trail – North Branch Section – Paddlers along the
181 miles of the North Branch of the Susquehanna River enjoy mountain
views, river towns, remnant structures, as well as birds and other
wildlife, fish, and camping at 17 river campsites.

Texas
Cameron Park Trails – This 20-mile system of trails in Waco features
handcrafted bridges, varying terrain, views of the Brazos and Bosque Rivers
from 100-foot cliffs, bamboo forests, and cedar groves. It is home to
mountain bike races, community events, and weekly walks, bringing more than
$1 million per year to the local economy.

Virginia
Occoquan Water Trail – The 40 miles of the Occoquan Water Trail offer an
unparalleled opportunity for boating adventure and exploration only 20
miles southwest of Washington, DC. Visitors are invited to discover
ancient hemlock groves, granite cliffs, Civil War sites, relic structures,
the historic port Town of Occoquan, remnant settlements, and wildlife
sanctuaries.

Wisconsin
Kohl Park Hiking Trail – The Milwaukee Conservation Leadership Corps
constructed this 2-mile long trail. Partnerships with local scout troops
have improved the trail. Local residents volunteer to keep it litter free.
It connects people to green space in densely populated Milwaukee County.

I bet there is a National Recreational Trail near where you live. Check out the American Trails website for maps and everything you need to go on a hiking 'Venture of a lifetime. Whether it's a short walk in the woods or long hike in the mountains, I know you'll have a great time!

Rededication Of The Lincoln Memorial

Be a part of history when the Lincoln Memorial is rededicated as part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration! The program will begin at 2:25 PM and will feature Special Guest Speakers, performances by the United States Marine Band and William Farley winner of Poetry Out Loud reading a poem by Lincoln Biographer Carl Sandburg.

The event is free and no tickets are required. Due to the limited parking in the area around the Mall, please use Metro and get off at the Foggy Bottom or Smithsonian Stations.

Light The Lighthouse At Sleeping Bear Dunes
I love lighthouses and here’s a reason to celebrate. The lighthouse on South Manitou Island in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which has been dark since 1958 will shine again. Thanks to some major donations, a replica Fresnel lens will be powered by a low-voltage solar powered bulb. The light will shine from May to October each year in this wonderful 100 foot lighthouse.

Join in on the celebration and be one of the first to see the newly lit lighthouse. The festivities start on May 30 and you need to contact the Park for all the celebration details.

What Are Your Plans For Memorial Day Weekend?

I look forward to Memorial Day Weekend every year. First, because it is a time to remember those who have served our country to keep our country free. Second, because it really is the beginning of the Summer Travel Season.

I start planning weeks in advance all the fun things I am going to do over the summer, from weekend trips to as long a vacation as I can squeeze out of my busy schedule. I even plan day trips to take advantage of the warm weather and the long days.

Here are a couple of exciting events that I’m sure you’ll want to make a part of your plans:

Memorial Day at Antietam
Join the Parade in the town of Sharpsburg followed by a commemoration in the National Cemetary
May 23 at 11:00 AM

National Memorial Day Concert
The National Symphony Orchestra performs on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol
May 24 at 8:00 PM

Memorial Day Observance at the Vietman Veterans Memorial
Honoring those who served and those who died for our country in the Vietnam War.
May 25 at 1:00 PM

Denali And The Grand Canyon North Rim Are OPEN!

May 15 marks the opening of both Denali National Park and The North Rim of the Grand Canyon. These are both special places and because of weather and road conditions, they are closed for the winter months. Now, through the end of the summer, you can enjoy all that these two parks have to offer. Hiking, wildlife and majestic scenery are waiting for you.

At Denali National Park, be a part of the opening day festivities with Sled Dog demonstrations and a tour of the park on the shuttle. At the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, trail rides will begin again and the campground will be open, too.

Be sure to visit the Visitor Centers and check out the great bookstores. There’s always fun stuff that you’ll just “need” to take home with you!

When you get back, please drop me a note about your trip and send me a couple of pictures, too. I’d love to include your ‘Venture in my next newsletter.

National Natural Landmark Photo Contest

I love to take pictures and I love seeing them in print, too! Now you have a chance to have your picture in print on the National Natural Landmark Calendar for 2010. Join in on the fun and enter your best photo of a National Natural Landmark. Most of them are NOT inside a National Park, so you need to go to this website to get the complete list of National Natural Landmarks (NNL).

There will be 13 photos chosen for the calendar and you might be the lucky winner. The contest ends June 30, 2008, so don't waste any time! Get your best photo in to the judges. Winners will be announced in September.

Take the time to find a National Natural Landmark near you or near your travels and get a GREAT picture. What fun it is to enter a photo contest. You can also send me a picture with a paragraph or two about your trip and it might end up in my newsletter!

Was This The Beginning Of The Civil War?

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park holds a special place in American History and the Park and many partners will host a variety of events this year commemorating the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s raid.

The opening events took place on April 18 starting at 10 a.m. with A Prelude to History: The Wedding of Virginia Kennedy, a full day of programs and activities focusing on the arrival of Captain John Cook to Harpers Ferry and his subsequent marriage to Virginia Kennedy.

Celebrate Junior Ranger Day in Hawaii

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will launch the Hawai‘i Island National Parks Junior Ranger Adventure Book on April 25. Meet the artists and join in on the refreshments, music and activities for children under 7. Best of all, free copies of the new Junior Ranger Adventure Book, which highlights all 5 national parks on the island, will be distributed.

Song writer Kenneth Makuakane will debut his new mele, Huaka‘i Hele, written to honor of all the island’s Junior Rangers. I wish I could be there. I always love visiting the Hawaii National Parks. What a great way to celebrate Junior Ranger Day!

National Park Week Is Almost Here!

I love National Park Week. It’s the time we celebrate the wonderful gift we have given ourselves in the National Park System. National Park Week is an annual Presidentially-proclaimed week to celebrate and recognize America’s National Parks. Celebrations around the country are scheduled for April 18-26.

Many of this year’s events focus on the Junior Ranger program with special activities designed just for kids like you and me. And don’t forget, National Junior Ranger Day is set for April 25, so be sure to check out the schedule of activities is posted at www.nps.gov/npweek.

It’s Wildflower Weekend at Mammoth Cave
Did you know that there is more to do in Mammoth Cave National Park than going in to a cave? Well, there is. There is a lot of Park to visit above the ground, too! Join rangers and visiting naturalists on above-ground excursions in search of wildflowers on April 18 and April 19 at Mammoth Cave National Park. The hunt will be on for trillium, wild iris, anemone and many others along several park trails.

Just Where DO All Those Birds Go?

Birds are a wonderful part of many National Parks. Did you ever wonder just where they are flying off to? Well, now you can learn more about the migration of birds when you visit Gulf Islands National Seashore. They will be hosting an International Migratory Bird Day program from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on April 11 at the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center.

Naturalist Lynn Ogden will give an introduction to birding and binoculars on the deck behind the Visitor Center where a spotting scope will be set up. She will then take us on a walk to look for migrating song birds and resident woodland birds. What fun!

The Cherry Blossoms Are In Bloom!

On April 4 the National Cherry Blossom Parade will run from 7th to 17th Street on
Constitution Avenue NW, starting at 10 a.m. Cherry Blossom queens from the
U.S. and Japan will add royalty to the procession.

Tickets are not required, but grandstand seats will be available. Be sure to dress warm. Sometimes, it can still be pretty cold on the Parade route! Festival schedule information is posted at http://nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/

Is Tallgrass A Place Or A Plant?

Throughout history tallgrass prairie covered 140 million acres of America. Now less than 4% of that remains, because of development and agriculture. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve protects one of the last remnants of this vast physical and cultural part of our history. Make a point of visiting Kansas to see this wonderful part of our American history. It’s worth the trip!

Yo-Ho Yo-Ho... Join the Chantey Sing

I love to sing and I always look for opportunities to learn new songs. Now you can learn traditional sailor working songs aboard a historic vessel at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park on February 7 from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The Chantey Sing takes place on the first Saturday of every month (except July when it is scheduled for the 2nd Saturday). Joining in on the singing is free, but you need to make a reservation. To make reservations please call 415-561-7171.
