Choi shot a bogey-free 67 in the final round. She carded birdies on the first, fifth and seventh holes to get off to a great start. Choi birdied the 15th hole before sinking the tournament-clinching birdie on the 18th hole.

Tseng shot 68 in the final round. She made four birdies on the front nine, at the second, fourth, fifth and seventh holes, to shoot 32 on the front side. Her only bogey came at the 12th hole and she finished the round with a birdie on the 18th hole to fall one shot short of a playoff. Hjorth birdied six of the first eight holes but needed one more in her round of 67. She finished with 10 straight pars to finish one shot behind Choi.

Ran Hong finished at four-under par and in fourth place. Song-Hee Kim took fifth place at four-under par. Jiyai Shin extended her leads on the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year races with a sixth place finish. Brittany Lang tied for seventh place with Se Ri Pak, Anna Nordqvist and Inbee Park.

S. Women’s Open, looks to earn her first victory of the 2009 season.

Kung, who beat Katherine Hull by a shot last year, will face a field with 70 of the top players in golf, including Lorena Ochoa and rookie Jiyai Shin, the Rolex Ranking number one and two players, respectively. Shin currently leads both the Rolex Player of the Year and Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year awards, looking to be the first player since Nancy Lopez in 1978 to win both in the same year. Other top players in the field this week are Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Yani Tseng and In-Kyung Kim.

The tournament will be played on the Ocean Course, a 7,229 yard, par-72 Korean-style course with a view of the ocean. It was designed by Jack Nicklaus and features long bunkers that follow the fairway.

The PGA TOUR heads to the Annadale Golf Club in Mississippi for the Viking Classic, where Will MacKenzie looks to find the magic that gave him a playoff victory here last season. The Fall Series has had its storylines but none are bigger than Rickie Fowler, who enters the Viking Classic as the hottest player on TOUR in only his third professional start.

Fowler was supposed to be teeing it up in the first stages of the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament but, with his second place finish last week, he moved into the top 150 on the money list and earned an exemption to the second stage of q-school. Fowler looks to add on to his money total and get into the top 125 on the money list and earn full playing rights on the 2010 TOUR.

MacKenzie comes into this week much like last season, struggling. A win would make 2009 a success but he will have to fend off hot players like Fowler. Also, David Toms finished second last year and would like to notch his first win of the season as well.

Annandale Golf Club hosts the event and will play to 7,199 yards and a par-72. Jack Nicklaus was the original architect for the course in 1980 and oversaw the remodel in 2006

Fowler, who has played in two PGA TOUR events since turning pro in September, is the latest American phenom to grace the links. He joins Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan as part of an American revolution ready to take on the world’s next great crop, including Rory McIlroy and Ryo Ishikawa.

Next up for Fowler, getting his TOUR card to set up what could be a great 2010 season.

O’Hern finished the front side at even-par with a birdie on the second hole and a bogey at the sixth. He then went on a tear of six straight birdies from the 10th hole to the 15th. After a bogey on the 16th hole, O’Hern made birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to take the lead at seven-under par.

Slocum opened the tournament with three straight pars and then made birdies on five of the next seven holes. He finished with birdies on the 15th and 18th holes, with a bogey on the 17th. Heintz started on the 10th hole with a birdie. He added birdies on the 11th, 13th and 14th hole before his only bogey of the day on the 15th hole. After the turn, Heintz made birdies on the first, third and fourth holes before finishing with pars.

Rickie Fowler seems to be comfortable on the PGA TOUR as he is tied for fourth place after the first round in his second event since turning pro in September. Fowler is tied with Rory Sabbatini, D. A. Points and Greg Owen at five-under par. There is a 15 player tie for eighth place with rounds of 66, four-under par. In that group are veterans Justin Leonard, Mike Weir and Stephen Ames. Also tied at four-under par are Ryan Moore, Pat Perez, Tim Petrovic, Jeff Klauk, Paul Goydos, Bill Lunde, Ricky Barnes, Spencer Levin, Brad Adamonis, Billy Mayfair, Nicholas Thompson and Ben Crane.

Beckman will have to fight back a solid field with players like Rory Sabbatini, John Rollins and Mike Weir. Also in the field this week are Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Justin Leonard.

Grayhawk Golf Club is a par-70, 7,125 yard layout set on a desert landscape with a natural creek that runs throughout, draining into a lake between the 10th and 18th holes. The Raptor Course was designed by Tom Fazio in 1995 and has played host to this event for its three years on the PGA TOUR.

Laird held the lead outright with three holes to play but a bogey on the 17th hole dropped him into a tie with Campbell. McNeill joined the group with a birdie on the final hole.

All three players pared the first sudden-death hole. Campbell was eliminated from the playoff after a bogey on the par-3, 17th hole, while Laird and McNeill moved on with pars. McNeill’s birdie attempt from 26 feet on the third playoff hole missed by three feet. Laird made his birdie for the win.

Laird had a slow start with a bogey on the second hole. He got the shot back on the fourth hole with a birdie and added birdies on the sixth, seventh and ninth holes to finish the front nine at three-under par. A birdie on the 16th hole put Laird in the lead but he would make bogey on the 17th hole to finish at three-under for the day and tied for the lead.

McNeill shot 67 in the final round. He was two-under through nine holes, with birdies on the third, sixth and ninth holes with a bogey at the fifth hole. After a birdie on the 11th hole, McNeill slipped with a bogey on the 14th hole. He would recover with a birdie on the par-5, 16th hole before making the critical birdie on the final hole to get into the playoff.

Campbell, who shared the lead at the start of the round, shot a two-under par, 69 on Sunday. He finished the front side at one-under par with birdies on the first and fifth holes with a bogey on the fourth. After a bogey on the 12th hole, Campbell regrouped to finish with birdies on the 13th and 16th holes to qualify for the playoff.

Jim Furyk and Jeff Klauk finished tied for fourth place, one shot out of the playoff. Furyk shot a bogey-free 62 in the final round with nine birdies on the day. Klauk made bogey on the 17th hole that cost him a spot in the playoff.

Charley Hoffman finished in sixth place with seven players a shot behind him in seventh place. Tied for seventh were Ryan Moore, Andres Romero, Matt Kuchar, Tim Petrovic, D. J. Trahan, Rickie Fowler and Tom Pernice, Jr.

Piercy shot a six-under par, 65, to move up from seventh place. He started the day with birdies on the first and fifth holes before his only bogey at the sixth hole. Piercy would get on a roll with birdies on the ninth and 10th holes, adding three more on the 13th, 15th and 16th holes.

Campbell, who started the day with a share of the lead, shot a four-under par, 67, to finish tied at 17-under par. He was one-under par through 11 holes, with a birdie on the sixth hole. Campbell would eagle the par-4, 12th hole and birdie the 13th and 15th holes. A double-bogey on the 16th hole pulled Campbell back to the field but a birdie on the final hole tied him with Piercy.

Martin Laird is in third place after shooting 67 in the third round. George McNeill, Jason Bohn, Jeff Klauk and Bob Heintz are tied for fourth place at 15-under par, two shots behind the leaders. Troy Matteson, who shared the lead at the start of the round, is tied for eighth place with Tom Pernice, Jr. and Charley Hoffman.

E. Yang, who beat Woods in the final round of this year’s PGA Championship.

The U. S. team won six of the 12 matches on Sunday, with two ending all-square. Woods and Phil Mickelson were undefeated throughout the week to lead the Americans. For the International team, Vijay Singh had the best record, going 2-0-3, while, Camilo Villegas was the only player on either team to not pick up a point. Only two matches ended all-square on Sunday. Singh tied Lucas Glover and Mike Weir halved Justin Leonard.

U. S. victories

The singles matches started off with Hunter Mahan playing Camilo Villegas. Mahan won 2-and-1 for his second victory of the week. Stewart Cink, who asked captain Fred Couples for an early tee time, beat Adam Scott 4-and-3. Anthony Kim outplayed Robert Allenby for a 5-and-3 win. Sean O’Hair finished strong with an impressive 6-and-4 victory over Ernie Els. As mentioned earlier, Woods beat Yang and Mickelson defeated Retief Goosen 2-and-1.

International singles wins

Finishing strong, Geoff Ogilvy handed Steve Stricker his only loss of the week with a 2-and-1 victory. Ryo Ishikawa, the youngest Presidents Cup player ever at 19 years old, finished off a memorable week with a 2-and-1 victory over Kenny Perry. And, Tim Clark beat Zach Johnson 4-and-3.

The American team wins came with Mickelson partnering Leonard. Playing Goosen and Scott, Leonard helped grab an early lead with a birdie on the first hole. Scott brought his team back to even on the fourth hole and Goosen put them one-up with a birdie on the fifth hole. Mickelson made back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes to put the Americans back on top. The match went all-square when Scott made a birdie on the 12th hole but Mickelson reclaimed the lead on the next hole. Leonard put the match out of reach with birdies on the 14th and 16th holes for a 3-up lead.

Woods and Stricker are proving to be a lethal pair as they beat Ogilvy and Cabrera 5-up in Foursomes. Both Woods and Stricker made birdies on the first hole to grab the quick lead. Cabrera brought the match all-square on the third hole but Stricker made birdie on the fifth hole to put the Americans back on top. Woods made birdie on the sixth and eighth holes to give his team a 3-up advantage. After halving five straight holes, Stricker won the match with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes.

The other American victory came when Johnson and Mahan beat Villegas and Allenby 2-up. The Americans took the lead on the second hole with a Mahan birdie. Villegas got his team back to all-square on the fifth hole but Mahan birdied the sixth to give the Americans a lead they would not relinquish. Johnson won the 10th hole for a 2-up lead. Villegas narrowed the gap with a birdie on the 13th hole but, Johnson won the 14th to put the Americans back up two before the International team ran out of holes.

International team wins

The one blowout for the International team was when Ishikawa and Yang partnered to beat Perry and O’Hair 4-up. Yang gave his team the lead with a birdie on the first hole and Ishikawa won the second hole for a 2-up lead after two holes. The pair won the fourth and sixth holes to go 4-up before the Americans came to life with birdies from Perry to take the eighth and ninth holes. Ishikawa and Perry split the 11th and 12th holes, respectively, to keep the match at 2-up for the International team. Both Yang and Ishikawa made birdies on the 13th hole to go back up three holes with five to play. Yang added another birdie on the 14th and halved the 15th to win the match.

Els and Weir won the last two holes to come from behind to beat Furyk and Kim. Weir made a birdie on the second hole to give his team the early lead. Furyk quickly turned the tide with birdies on the fourth and fifth holes but, Els answered with a birdie of his own on the sixth hole to even the match. Kim’s birdie on the eighth hole gave the Americans the lead through the 12th hole. Weir squared the match on the 13th hole but Furyk birdied the 14th to reclaim the lead with three holes to play. After pars halved the 16th hole, Weir made a birdie on the 17th and Els made birdie on the 18th to give the International team another win.

Clark, playing with Singh, made eagle on the 18th hole to give his team their third victory of the day. Americans Glover and Cink birdied the first hole for the early edge. After Clark squared the match on the sixth hole, Cink birdied the seventh hole to give his team a 1-up lead. After Clark squared the match on the ninth hole, the International team took their first lead with a birdie from Singh on the 10th hole. Cink birdied the 14th hole and Golver birdie the 16th hole to give the Americans a 1-up lead with two hole to play. Both Singh and Clark birdied the 17th for a win and, after two perfect shots, Clark rolled the 15-foot eagle putt in for the win.

The team of Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim got the Americans off to a solid start with a 3-up win over Mike Weir and Tim Clark. Weir and Clark had a one hole lead through 12 holes but birdies on the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes gave Mickelson and Kim a comeback win.

Ernie Els and Adam Scott, who was captain Greg Norman’s pick, handled the team of Hunter Mahan and Sean O’Hair with a 2-up victory. Els and Scott were up from the start and pulled ahead for good with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes.

Vijay Singh and Robert Allenby beat a pair of major winners in Lucas Golver and Stewart Cink. After halving the first two holes, Singh and Allenby took the lead with a birdie on the third hole. Glover and Cink stayed close and pulled all-square with a birdie on the 16th hole but, the Singh/Allenby team retook the lead with a birdie of their own on the 17th hole.

Angel Cabrera and Camilo Villegas took the early lead from Kenny Perry and Zach Johnson with a birdie on the second hole. The Americans pulled all-square on the next hole and took the lead with a par on the fifth hole. The match was all-square with three holes to play when the Americans birdied the 16th hole to take the lead. Perry and Johnson won the match when Cabrera and Villegas conceded the final hole.

Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker had the most dominating win of the day, defeating Geoff Ogilvy and Ryo Ishikawa 6-up. After pars on the first hole, Woods and Stricker won the second, third, sixth, ninth, 10th, 12th and 14th holes.

The final match between Americans Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard versus the International team of Retief Goosen and Y. E. Yang finished all-square. Goosen and Yang were 3-up through five holes but lost the lead on the back nine. Furyk and Leonard birdied the 13th and pared the 15th hole to go 2-up with three holes to play. But, birdies on the 17th and 18th holes by Goosen and Yang pulled the match back to even.

The PGA TOUR finished the season on a high note with its two biggest names raising trophy’s in the final event. Phil Mickelson shot 65 in the final round to win THE TOUR Championship by three shots over Tiger Woods. But, not to be outdone by his rival, Woods’ second place finish at THE TOUR Championship put him on top of the FedEx Cup points standings and the $10 million prize. It is Woods’ second FedEx Cup win in the three year history of the PGA TOUR Playoffs.

The win at THE TOUR Championship puts Mickelson back as the second ranked golfer in the world, according to the Official World Golf Rankings. With Woods retaining the top spot, the pair are poised to reignite their rivalry next season. But, it was a different year for golf’s two biggest stars. Both had multiple win seasons and enjoyed success in the playoffs but not in major championships.

Mickelson, who won three times in 2009, missed most of the summer after learning that his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Then, his mother received the same diagnosis about a month later. He didn’t play in the British Open so that he could be home to support his family. His win at THE TOUR Championship was not only emotional but, for fans, it was nice to see Lefty walking down the 18th fairway with his trademark smile.

Woods came into the 2009 season with a lot of questions after missing most of the 2008 season after undergoing reconstructive knee surgery. Woods answered with six wins and three second place finishes in 16 events. Woods finished outside the top 10 only twice – at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship and the Deutsche Bank Championship. For Woods, season are graded on major championships. He did not win one this season and missed his only cut of the year at the British Open.

With the PGA heading into the offseason, fans will have the winter to dream and debate about what could be for the 2010 season. Woods, having played a full season on his new knee, will be determined to get major win number 14 and inch closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major titles. Mickleson, who has not won a major since 2006, will try to end the curse of Winged Foot, where he collapsed down the stretch to lost the U. S. Open.

The Presidents Cup starts Thursday with Foursomes. Captains Greg Norman (International Team) and Fred Couples (United States Team) have their lineups in for opening day at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, California.

A team event similar to the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup pits America’s best golfers against an International team with players from Australia, Europe, South America and Canada. The event starts with Foursomes, where players play the same ball and the match is scored in a match play format. On Friday, the teams will play Four-Ball, a match play format where teams of two golfers play their own ball and card the lowest score. Saturday players will play morning and afternoon match-ups in both Foursome and Four-Ball formats. For the final day, players will face off head-to-head in a match play format.

Harden Park Golf Course is one of the premier public golf courses in the country, voted by Golf Digest as one of the best places to play in 2008 and 2009. The course has gone through an extensive renovation since 2002 to restore the world-class layout for events like this week’s Presidents Cup. Located on Lake Merced, the course was designed by architect Willie Watson in 1925 and still follows the original layout and measures to 7,137 yards and plays to a par-71.

Thursday Foursomes

The International Team will put Tim Clark and Mike Weir against Anthony Kim and Phil Mickelson, reuniting their Ryder Cup partnership. Kim, a Presidents Cup rookie, will add some fire to Mickelson as they face solid ball strikers Clark and Weir.

Adam Scott is teamed up with Ernie Els for the International Team as they are set to face two of Americas youngest stars – Hunter Mahan and Sean O’Hair.

Vijay Singh and Robert Allenby face off against a pair of 2009 major champions Lucas Glover (U. S. Open) and Stewart Cink (British Open). Singh is coming off a rocky season after knee surgery in January but, the Fijian is always a threat.

Norman paired two South Americans – Angel Cabrera and Camilo Villegas – together to face Kenny Perry and Zach Johnson. Cabrera had a great season with a Masters win but Perry and Johnson did too with four wins in 2009, combined.

Geoff Ogilvy and Ryo Ishikawa will face off against Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in what will be the most watched matchup. Ogilvy is a great match play golfer and the 18-year-old Ishikawa is coming off his fourth win of the season. Woods and Stricker look like a solid pair and could be unbeatable.

In the last match of the day, Retief Goosen is playing with 2009 PGA Championship winner Y. E. Yang as they tee it up against veterans Jim Furyk and Justin Leonard.
