These days there are millions of sites that provide free domains/sub-domains and in those sites some of them provide DNS Setup. But, there are only a few those provide a very good prolonged service. Obviously, they do it for free, but there must a satisfaction for the customer as well as the vendor. This occurs only when the vendor offers the service with utmost care, as it was told to the customer at the time of purchase. Alright, coming to the technical side, Sub-domains and free domains are very good for people who want to start a site/blog/forum for fun, time pass or even as a hobby.

These, however are not very user-friendly for first timers. Some technical knowledge is required whatsoever to start a site with or without a sub-domain.

Well, you can then ask me a question, "when there are sites like blogger, wordpress, blog.com etc , why would anyone opt for sub-domains? " - the answer is some sub-domain sites provide a very short URL like co.cc co.nr etc rather than .blogspot.com or .wordpress.com, they dont support DNS setup* (*Only Blogger).

Math whiz

Google is a full-fledged calculator. You’ll understand this when you start typing math equations into the search box. Try a simple problem such as 5 X 2, and press Search. Google immediately goes into calculator mode, showing you the answer instantaneously. Want to get fancy? A math calculation such as 5*9+(sqrt 10)3 is as easy for Google as 2+2.

Google local

Google can mine information in your local area or a specific region as easily as it can the entire web. Put local search to work with some easy-to-remember shortcuts. For example, append your postal code to the end of almost any search phrase, and Google will narrow its results accordingly. Type ‘movies,’ ‘restaurants,’ ‘shoe repair,’ ‘taxis,’ or any other service or business, for instance, and you’ll quickly bring up a list of places or services close to you.
The same goes for finding the weather, either in your area or another. Just enter the word ‘weather’ to get the weather forecast for your current location, or type ‘weather’ followed by a postal code (or city) to get the forecast for a different region. Local news works the same way.

Let Google find the answer

If you don’t know the answer to a specific question, let Google find it for you. Instantly, you’ll see Google present a list of inventions from which you can choose – or that you can use to conduct a traditional search to find more information about that particular invention.

Find a package or flight

Google’s search box can do some amazing things these days with numbers that identify specific types of information. Need to pick up someone from the airport and want to find out whether the flight is delayed, for example? Enter the airline and flight number in the search box, and see what happens. Need to track a package sent by FedEx or another carrier that offers tracking? Enter the tracking number, and press Search. A link to your package should appear.

Resource Hacker is a tool to edit Windows system files like .exe, .dll, .cpl, etc. You can edit these files and can change the look of various dialog boxes, menus and many other things in Windows.

NOTE: This tutorial is divided into 2 parts:

PART1 : BASIC INFORMATION

PART2 : ADVANCED INFORMATION

Basic part contains Basic details, like viewing/replacing resources, etc.
Advanced part covers some advance information which is described for geeks. Like Adding your own resources, using scripts with resource hacker, etc.

PART1 : BASIC INFORMATION

What is Resource Hacker:
Resource Hacker is a Free software to edit 32-bit windows files (DLL, EXE, CPL, and many other). You can add / delete / view / rename / modify existing resources in a file using this great piece of software.

You don't need to install it, simply extract the files and run the software. It also doesn't make any entry in Registry!
Using Resource Hacker:
When you open a file in Resource Hacker, it shows various directories in left-side pane, like:
AVI
Cursor
Bitmap
Icon
Menu
Dialog
String Table
Accelerators
Version Info

and so on...

These directories vary from file to file!
Following is a small description of these directories:
AVI : This directory contains AVI files.
Cursor : This directory contains Cursor files.
Bitmap : This directory contains Bitmaps.
Icon : This directory contains Icons.
Menu : This directory contains various Menus.
Dialog : This directory contains various Dialog boxes.
String Table : This directory contains various Strings.
Accelerators : This directory contains Shortcut keys.
Version Info : This directory contains version information of the file.

Viewing Resources:

You can view any resource embedded in the file. Simply expand the directory and click on the name of the resource.
Actually each resource contains 3 parts:
Resource Type
Resource Name
Resource Language
Resource Type : Its indicate that the resource is an AVI/Bitmap/Menu/Cursor/Icon/String/etc.
Resource Name : It describes the name of a resource, no 2 resource can hv the same name.
Resource Language : Its the language used in the file. For ENGLISH its 1033.

Changing the Resources:

=> For Icon/Cursor/Bitmap:

1.) Select the resource ( e.g. Bitmap -> 131 -> 1033 ).

2.) Click on Action -> Replace Icon/Cursor/Bitmap....

3.) It'll open a new window, click on Open file with new Icon/Cursor/Bitmap button.
4.) Select the desired resource in the OPEN dialog box and click on Open button and then Replace.
=> For other resources like AVI:
Its a little bit different.
1.) Click on Action -> Replace Other Resource....
2.) It'll open a new window, click on Open file with new resource button.
3.) Select the file and click on Open button.
4.) Now u hv to give the required information for this resource, which I mentioned earlier.

Resource Type
Resource Name
Resource Language

In type give the type of resource, e.g. if u r replacing AVI file then give the type as AVI.
In name give the exact name of the existing resource which u want to replace with this new one.
In language give 1033 for English.
5.) And finally click on Replace button.

=> For Menus/Strings/Dialogs:

To change String/Menu/Dialog boxes, Select the desired resource, e.g., String Table -> 4 -> 1033, and make ur changes and then click on Compile Script button. It'll compile the script and will give ERROR if something goes wrong so that u can correct the problem!

PART2 : ADVANCED INFORMATION

Adding ur own Resources:
Adding new Bitmaps/Icons/Cursors/AVIs:

1.) Click on Action -> Add a new Resource....
2.) Click on Open file with new resource button.

3.) Select the desired resource and click on Open button.
4.) Give Resource Type/Name/Language. (Remember: Resource Name should be different than the existing resources.)
5.) Click on Add Resource button.

Adding new Menu-items:

U can also add ur own Menu-items, like u can add extra menu (e.g., ur name) in Desktop Context Menu, etc.
1.) Goto desired menu, e.g., Menu -> 215 -> 1033, and add a line anywhere inside POPUP "" or something like that in following format:

MENUITEM "ur_desired_string", 12345, MFT_STRING, MFS_GRAYED | MFS_DEFAULT

Here:
"ur_desired_string" is the text which will be displayed on screen.
12345 is the the identifier, which must be different than other menuitems.
MFT_STRING describes that its a Menuitem with some text.
MFS_GRAYED disables our menuitem. U can also change it to MFS_ENABLED to enable it.
MFS_HILITE automatically select our menuitem. u can ignore it.
MFS_DEFAULT set our menuitem BOLD. u can also ignore it.
Actually u can only give MENUITEM "ur_desired_string", 12345 and Resource Hacker will automatically add other parts.

Adding Newly added Resources in Dialog Boxes:

Once u hv added ur own Icons/Bitmaps/AVIs, u may want to add them in dialog box so that they can be displayed when we open some dialog box (like RUN, Progress Dialog box, etc.).
1.) Goto the desired dialog box, in which u want to add ur own resource, e.g., Dialog -> 1020 -> 1033.
2.) Right-click on the dialog box and select Insert Control option.

3.) It'll open a new window, where u'll see many controls, like BITMAP, LABEL, ICON, BUTTON, SysAnimate32 (for AVIs), etc.
4.) Simply click on the desired control, like to use ur own added Bitmap click on the BITMAP control or to use ur own added AVI click on SysAnimate32 control. U can also add Date/Time control by clicking on SysDateTimePick32 control.

5.) Don't forget to fill the Caption entry. Actually we hv to enter the resource name in Caption so that our added resource can be displayed on that place! e.g., if u hv added a Bitmap and gave it name as 401, then give 401 in Caption.

PS: For AVI Control ( SysAnimate32 ), u hv to add # before the name in Caption. e.g., if the AVI name 144, then put #144 in Caption.
6.) Finally click on OK button & Compile the script.
7.) U can change its position on the dialog box by simply dragging it to ur desired position.

Using Scripts in Resource Hacker:

We can also use Resource Hacker from Command line w/o going thru its GUI and also can automate many repeatative tasks to save our time.
U can use the scripts in 2 forms:
1.) Single command
2.) Multiple commands

1.) Single Command:

Some useful commands with their format r as follows:

-add ExeFileName, ResultingFileName, ResourceAddress, ResourceType, ResourceName,
-addskip ExeFileName, ResultingFileName, ResourceAddress, ResourceType, ResourceName,
-addoverwrite ExeFileName, ResultingFileName, ResourceAddress, ResourceType, ResourceName,
-modify ExeFileName, ResultingFileName, ResourceAddress, ResourceType, ResourceName,
-extract ExeFileName, ResourceAddress, ResourceType, ResourceName,
-delete ExeFileName, ResultingFileName, ResourceType, ResourceName,

Here:

ExeFileName : The original file which we want to edit in Resource Hacker
ResultingFileName : The name which we want to give when we save the file.
ResourceAddress : The resource address (like Bitmap location on our HDD).
ResourceType : The resource type (like Bitmap, AVI, etc.).
ResourceName : Resource name (like 131, 1020, etc.).
EX:- ResHacker.exe -addoverwrite explorer.exe, explorer1.exe, MyImage.bmp , bitmap, 143,
2.) Multiple commands
To use script first u hv to create a script file in notepad and then give following command:

ResHacker.exe -script ScriptFileName

Here: ScriptFileName is the name of the script file which u made in notepad.
Format of a script file:-

[FILENAMES]
Exe=
SaveAs=
Log=
[COMMANDS]
-addoverwrite ResourceAddress, ResourceType, ResourceName

Here:

EXE= is the original file location
SaveAs= is the saved file location
Log= is the LOG file location which will store the log of the process
In [COMMAND] section, we give the commands which we want to execute.
You can omit the LOG entry, then Resource Hacker will automatically create a LOG file named "ResHacker.log"

Disable Crash protection in Firefox 4 and 3.6

Mozilla has introduced a new feature called "Crash Protection" in Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4. Crash Protection runs using Out-of-process-plugins, which basically runs the plugins as separate processes from the main Firefox process. This allows Mozilla to recover from plugin crashes without freezing the entire browser.

However, not many users like this new feature and one of commentators recently asked whether it was possible to disable crash protection because it froze the browser. Well the answer is that, yes you can disable crash protection in Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6, however, you will have to do so manually.

How To Disable Crash protection in Firefox 4 and Firefox 3.6

Step 1: In the browser location bar type "about:config" without the quotes and hit enter or return key.

Step 2: If you are doing this for the first time, you will see a warning saying "You may void your warranty!", you need to press the button "I’ll be careful, I promise" to move to the configuration for Firefox.

That’s about it, using the above steps you can disable or enable Crash protection in Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4. Firefox 4 does not have options to individually turn the plugins Crash Protection off yet, but it may be added in the final version.

Here’s the FIFA 2010 World Cup Windows 7 Theme by EA Sports.

When you download the theme in Windows XP, you’ll see that there is no program associated with it to open the file. So how can you open it up?

There are at least two ways, first lets try the easy method. Rename the file and add the extension .CAB to the end of it.

Now you’ll see that Windows XP recognizes this file type
(hopefully). Double click it and the CAB file will open in an Explorer window.

Copy the JPG files into your My Pictures folder or some other place and you can use them as wallpapers. Sometimes, there are also cursor and sound files that you can use if you wish. As far as I know, there isn’t much you can do with the THEME file you’ll find in a Windows 7 themepack.

If you can’t open up the CAB file because Windows doesn’t recognize it, you can use a third party program to open it. I recommend 7zip. Once it’s installed, you can right click on any themepack file and extract it to a local folder.

How to Rename a Series of Files

When you download photos from your digital camera, they often have unrecognizable names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other types of files.

1.Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, and then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files that you want to rename.

2.Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are not adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, and then click each item to select it.

3.On the File menu, click Rename.

4.Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type.

For example, if you type Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), and so on.

To specify the starting number for the series, type the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type.

For example, if you type Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), and so on.

This feature is known as 'AutoComplete' and Outlook automatically build this emails list according to user activity and save it into a file with .NK2 extension.

The file management in Q-Dir is based on MS Windows Explorer but 4x plus Tabs and with more functionality!

Start the program. The first time that you use it the program it will present you with a license screen. The program is free and the license info is only displayed the first time (per PC).

Install Windows XP using USB Flash Disk/ Flash Drive

If you want to install Windows XP, but your notebook (or PC) has no CDROM, you should install Windows XP using USB Flash disk/Flash Drive/Thumb drive...
just follow this guide :

step 1:
Download this software pack (Komku-SP-usb.exe - Download) 1.47MB

this software pack contains 3 application :

-BootSect.exe (Boot Sector Manipulation Tool)
-PeToUSB (http://GoCoding.Com)
-usb_prep8 (Prepares Windows XP Setup LocalSource for Copy to USB-Drive)

step 2:
Buy an USB Flash Drive (at least 2GB).
When you do this tutorial, please make sure your computer/laptop/PC has a CD-ROM (or DVD).
so, now you have 2 computers, with CD-ROM support and without CD-ROM support (e.g Acer Aspire One, Asus EEE-PC).

step 3:
Double click Komku-SP-usb.exe

a window will appear... and click Install

step 4:
Insert your USB Flash Drive.
When I made this tutorial, I was using 4GB Transcend USB FlashDrive...

Locate folder C:\Komku\PeToUSB\
double click PeToUSB.exe

a window will appear like this...

Destination Drive : select USB Removable
check on Enable Disk Format
check on Quick Format
check on Enable LBA (FAT 16x)
Drive Label : XP-KOMKU (or whatever you want)
then click Start

Click Yes to continue....

"You are about to repartition and format a disk. Disk: .... All existing volumes and data on that disk will be lost. Are You Sure You Want To Continue?"
click Yes

Wait a few seconds...

Click OK, and you can close PeToUSB window.

step 5:
Open Command Prompt ...
Click Start > Run > type cmd > click OK

On Command Prompt window, go to directory C:\Komku\bootsect\how to do this?
first type this cd\ and press Enter

then type cd komku\bootsect and press Enter

the result...

Don't close Command Prompt window, and go to step 6...

step 6:
on command prompt window, type bootsect /nt52 H:

H: is drive letter for my USB Flash Drive, it may be different with yours...
and press Enter

the result... "Successfully updated filesystem bootcode. Bootcode was succesfully updated on all targeted volumes."

don't close Command Prompt window, and go to step 7...

step 7:now type this cd.. and press Enter

then type cd usb_prep8 and press Enter

type usb_prep8 again... and pres Enter

step 8:Your command prompt window will look like this

Press any key to continue...
usb_prep8 welcome screen will appear

Prepares Windows XP LocalSource for Copy to USB-Drive:

0) Change Type of USB-Drive, currently [USB-stick]
1) Change XP Setup Source Path, currently []
2) Change Virtual TempDrive, currently [T:]
3) Change Target USB-Drive Letter, currently []
4) Make New Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive
5) Use Existing Tempimage with XP LocalSource and Copy to USB-Drive
F) Change Log File - Simple OR Extended, currently [Simple]
Q) Quit
Enter your choice:_

now, insert your original Windows XP CD, or Windows XP with sata ahci driver to your CD/DVD ROM
and back to Command Prompt window

type 1 then press Enter...
"Browse For Folder" window will appear, select your CD/DVD drive and click OK

the result... "XP Setup Source Path" changed to G:\ (yours may be different)

now for point 2, if letter T is currently assigned to a drive in your computer, you must change it.... if not, leave it as it is
how to change it?
type 2 and press Enter...

"Enter Available Virtual DriveLetter"
for example you doesn't have drive Sso you type S and press Enter

back to usb_prep8 welcome screen...
now type 3 and press Enter...
"Please give Target USB-Drive Letter e.g type U" Enter Target USB-Drive Letter:
because my Flash drive letter is H

so, type H and press Enter...

after back to usb_prep8 welcome screen...

now type 4 and press Enter to make new temporary image with XP LocalSource and copy it to USB Flash Drive
please wait a few seconds..

"WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE T: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?"
type Y and press Enter
please wait....
when format virtual disk complete, press any key to continue...

please wait... making of LocalSource folder is in progress...

when "Making of LocalSource folder $WIN_NT$.~LS Ready"
Press any key to continue...

"Copy TempDrive Files to USB-Drive in about 15 minutes = Yes OR STOP = End Program = No"
Click Yes, and wait...

"Would you like USB-stick to be preferred Boot Drive U: bla... bla..."
Click Yes

"Would you like to unmount the Virtual Drive ?"
Click Yes, wait a few seconds, and press any key....
press any key again to close usb_prep8...

Now, your USB Flash Drive is ready...

step 9:
Now, insert your USB Flash Drive/Flash Disk/Thumb Drive to your notebook (e.g Acer Aspire One)
go to BIOS and make USB HDD (or USB ZIP in some other machine) as primary boot device....

then boot form your USB Flash Drive....
and select "TXT Mode Setup Windows XP, Never unplug USB-Drive Until After Logon"

After Hard Disk detected, delete all partition, create single partition... and install Windows XP on that partition...
and wait...

once text mode setup is complete, computer will restart....
this time select "GUI Mode setup Windows XP, Continue Setup + Start XP"

Continue Windows XP setup.... and Done!
Windows XP Installed....

Remember, you can use this tutorial to install Windows XP on all other computers.. not just Aspire One and Asus EEE-PC....

Known Problems

hal.dll not found

Method 1:

If you get the hal.dll not found error message, start again from your USB-Drive and choose option 2 “Gui-Installation” which should work now. (If option 2 doesn't work choose option 4 and “Windows XP from HD” on the next screen.) Follow the installation process until you reach a usable windows desktop. The error message is misleading, it's nothing wrong with your hal.dll - your boot.ini has a corrupted entry which is easy to fix:

Search for boot.ini (normally it's located on C:\)
Open the boot.ini
Delete the line that referres to “Windows-USB-Boot” - it should be the last line
Save & Exit

Your Eee should now boot Windows normally without the pen drive.
* Note for anyone with an error relating to “dsfo.exe not found” - copy the file USB_MultiBoot_9/makebt/dsfo.exe to USB_MultiBoot_9/dsfo.exe
Verified on an Asus Eee 701 4G and Asus Eee 900 20G

Method 2:

I tried Method 1 and didn't work. The issue was that I had more than one partition. All the forum posts suggest to delete ALL partitions. Well, here is how to bypass loss of your partitions:

In step 1 of Windows XP install, when you chose the partition where you want to install Windows, note the partition number. (If you got the hal.dll error probably it was not partition 1).
Use another computer to edit the following: on the USB stick, locate boot.ini file. Open it in an editor. Look for multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1) and replace it with multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(x), where x is the partition number where you install Windows.
Plug the USB back in your netbook and just choose option 2 again. It should work.

I found that useful as some netbooks come with a partition that holds an image of the original system for easy restore. In most of the cases you don't want to lose that, do you?

Faster installs using an SD card

The above method using a USB flash drive will do it's job. However it is a very slow procedure. The reason is that Windows XP setup doesn't load USB2 drivers. Instead, it uses the motherboard's legacy USB1 driver. However, we can get USB2 speed by performing all of the above operation on a fast SD card. The SD card reader on the eeePC is USB2 (you can prove it by booting into the BIOS with a card in the slot and checking the list of drives).

1. Perform all of the above procedure, except pointing the target to an SD card in a USB card reader. You will end up with a bootable SD card. It's preferable to use a fast reading SD card, but you will get good speed even with a normal speed card.

2. Put the SD card in the card reader of the eeePC. Boot into the BIOS (F2), change the boot order so that the card is booted from. That's it. It's as fast as using an internal DVD drive.

10 Awesome Notepad Tricks

Notepad is the default text editor in the Microsoft Windows OS. Many people prefer alternatives to notepad such as Notepad++, but did you know that notepad can do much more than just view and edit text ? In fact, I’ll tech you how to make a fake virus using notepad so that you can fool your friends

Here are some awesome trick you can do with notepad…..

1. Log Diary Trick

Have you ever wanted to make your own diary on your computer ? Why not try notepad...

Open notepad
Type .LOG
Save the file as LOG.txt

Now when you open notepad, the date and time will automatically be inserted. Write anything you want and the date and time is auto inserted. Your own notepad Diary

2. The 4335 Rule

This trick may not work on all computers

This has been surprising users for quite some time. When you enter a few secret codes, notepad hides them.

Open notepad and type in BUSH HID THE FACTS
Close notepad and open it again to see the magic

Can you read it again ? This is called the 4335 Rule. This means, if the first word is four words, the second and third as three words, and the fourth as five words, then you follow the 4335 rule and the text is hidden.
The same happens with this app can break.

3. Open a file using notepad

Here is a simple trick to open any file or program with notepad.
Open notepad and type the following:

Start path of file

Then save the file as Shortcut.bat
Please note that the file type should be kept as ALL FILES while saving it as a .bat file.
Change path of file with your actual file path. For example if you have a file called run with an extension .exeTEST in C:\ drive, then your path should be something like this: C:\TEST\run.exe
If you want to open some complicated programs such as Firefox, then use this code: in the folder

START /d “path of folder” program.extension

Change path of folder with the actual path of the folder, and put the name of the program with its extension. For example if you have a file called run with an extension of .exe in the folder TEST in C:\ drive, then your code should be something like this: START /d “C:\TEST” run.exe

4. Make Questions

Want to make something interactive ? Need to make questions ? Here is an example of a question made with notepad where the user got the answer correct.

To do this, just type the following code in notepad.

Please note that the file type should be kept as ALL Files while saving it as a .bat file.
You can modify the code for your convenience. Change the Blue text and try it out.

5. Make the Matrix

To make this, open notepad and type the following:

Save this file as Matrix.bat
Make sure the file type is kept as ALL FILES while saving it as a .bat file.
Open the saved file and see the magic.

6. Alternative Single Character Matrix

Type in the following in notepad:

ping localhost -n 1 > nul

Save the file as Matrix2.bat and run the file.
The file type should be kept as ALL FILES while saving a .bat file.

7. Lock Folders using Notepad

This trick may not work on all computers

Lets say you want to lock a folder named PICS in your D:\ drive , whose path is D:\PICS

Then the code should be something like this:
ren pics pics.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Pics is your folder name. Use the name of the folder in place for pics. Save the text file as lock.bat in the same drive.

To unlock this locked folder:

Open another new notepad text file and type the following:

ren pics.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} pics

Save the text file as key.bat in the same drive. Here again, pics is the name of the folder. Change it to the folder you want to lock.

8. Make a fake Virus POP UP

Type the following code in notepad:

@echo off
msg * WARNING
msg * VIRUS ENTERED YOUR PC

Save the file as pop.bat and run it. You should get two pop up messages. There has been an issue on some computers, but it should work on most computers.

9. Create a command prompt Virus message

Type the following in notepad:

@ echo off
title Virus
echo Your system is affected by virus
PAUSE
echo:
echo Windows will now try to undo changes
PAUSE
echo:
echo FAILED !
PAUSE
echo:
echo Your system is corrupt
PAUSE

Save the file as virus.bat and run the file.

10. Test your antivirus by EICAR STANDARD ANTIVIRUS TEST

Now, you can check if your antivirus really works. Type the following in notepad:

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Save the file as virus-test.txt

Scan the file. If your antivirus detects this file as a virus and tries to remove it, then you can be sure your antivirus is a good one.

This is a much easier way, than actually downloading a virus to test it. This sample virus code is perfectly harmless and allows you to test your antivirus. A good antivirus like MS Security Essentials will detect this test virus even before you scan it.

That's all the tricks I'm sharing, at least for now. All the tricks above are perfectly safe and will not harm your computer in any way. There are many destructive notepad tricks as well, like making a real virus which kills the Operating System, but personally, I believe that is only meant for developers who want to make their OS security better. Use these tricks in your best behavior
