Last week the kids at the Deasy School harvested in their garden system for the 1st time. Even this late in the season they were able to "Pinch, Twist & Pull" a variety of ripe veggies. From bok choy to chard, peas to
spinach, our garden event leader, Farmer Brian, teaches all students how to
harvest produce from the garden. But when it comes to
enjoying the fruits of their labor with a salad (whole-wheat) pizza the
next day, students need no further instruction...

Uh Oh! A great day was spent yesterday at PS 58's Family Concert and Food Fair to benefit the Brooklyn Food Coalition. One of the highlights was when Tom Chapin stopped by and chatted with Jamie for a few minutes. The singer/songwriter was impressed with the many types of garden systems we have provided for the NYC schools.

Check out Tom's new CD "Give Peas a Chance". Great family entertainment while promoting sustainability at the same time!
We had an absolute great experience with the garden. As I told you, creating a vehicle
in which my son and I could learn and experience something together was exactly
what I was looking for. The time together for us both won't be forgotten. The
garden herbs and vegetables were icing on the cake for us. We're already talking about next year. The garden itself is just beautiful and makes
our yard that much more nice to look at.
We received a ton of compliments on it.

The Bedford Hills Elementary School Garden is in its sixth
year of operation. It was designed and built by Teich Garden Systems and
has been a wonderful addition to our school. The garden is situated on
top of a rock ledge and is large enough for a class of twenty children to
enjoy. It is surrounded by a butterfly garden designed by a former
student at our school. Each year we try to incorporate the garden more
into the fabric of the school. Our art teacher has brought
students outside and one third grade has gone out and written essays out
there about all four seasons in the garden. At present, all the classes
go out to the garden for special grade level projects that go from spring in
one year and fall in the next. Our garden has held up beautifully and has
yielded great crops and vegetables every year. It is lovingly attended to
by parents in the summer and the school garden club during the year. We
have not had any animal problems and the garden has been able to withstand 300
children in an out of it at least twice a year. Our garden is the second
school garden in our district and was started by the school Wellness Committee
of which the school nurse is chairperson. We have connected and met with
other school gardeners in our district and shared ideas, difficulties, and
enjoyed hearing each others' stories. We feel fortunate to have such a
manageable and beautiful garden with such a great design and look
forward to many more years of gardening ahead!

Sincerely Yours,

Principal James Gardineer along with Mahopac school district Superintendant Thomas Manko and others were present as the students and teachers entered their brand new garden system for the first time. "Farmer Brian" Carney (formerly of Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown) was amazing at getting the children all pumped up about growing their own veggies! The 32 x 40 garden system will be lush with fall veggies in just a few weeks!
On Friday, under brilliant blue skies, the students and teachers of Westorchard Elementary School in Chappaqua NY had a ball planting for the first time in their new school garden system. Several varieties of lettuce, spinach, and peas were planted for a fall harvest.

It's only appropriate that we have recently completed our 3rd installation in the "Garden State". A homeowner in Princeton now has a beautiful new Teich Garden System.
We recently completed the installation of a 32 x 40 school garden system at Austin Road Elementary School in Mahopac. The students and staff will have plenty of planting space in which to get their hands dirty when they return in September!

Many thanks to Principal Jim Gardineer for bringing this wonderful school garden to life!
