The Pope is absolutely right from a religious perspective! No one can make a claim to the right to a nuptial ceremony sanctioned by any religious organization or entity.

The Big-C Church (meaning any church or religious community) has always had the right to decide, without Big-S State (meaning government) interference, upon whom they will bestow the religious sacrament of marriage. I'm certain that the Pope is more than able to find justifications and support for his statement within the teachings of the Catholic Church and I personally know people who have been refused religious marriage. I'm also convinced that he'd be hard pressed to find similar justifications for his position within U.S. Constitutional Law.

Hearing for Marines in Savannah gay attack delayed

A hearing for two Beaufort, S.C.-based Marines accused of attacking a gay Savannah man was continued Thursday until Sept. 9.
The postponement was the second delay for Cpl. Keil Cronauer, 22, and Lance Cpl. Christopher C. Stanzel, 23, who are charged with misdemeanor battery in the attack on Kieran Daly, 26, on June 12.
Defense attorneys asked Chatham County Recorder's Court Judge Claire Cornwell-Williams for a continuance so they could review a video they just received from prosecutors in the case.
Contents of the video were not disclosed.
Daly was found unconscious early June 12 near Johnson Square. Officers saw two men, later identified as the defendants, running from the scene.
The Marines contend they were "subject to unwanted verbal advances" before the incident and subsequently punched Daly, Marine officials said.
Daly has said he was punched in the back of the head as he tried to walk away.

Deace: Gay-marriage ban in Iowa is dead

The idea that same-sex marriage can be outlawed by passing an amendment to Iowa’s constitution was killed when a federal judge in California overturned a similar ban earlier this week, Christian radio host Steve Deace said on his drive-time program Thursday.
U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn Walker ruled Wednesday that Proposition 8, a voter approved ballot measure in California, violates the federal constitutional rights of gays and lesbians to marry the partners of their choice. Deace, who has been one of the biggest advocates for amending the state’s constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman, said Walker’s verdict makes the amendment strategy “null and void.”
“I think the ruling makes efforts like the Iowa Marriage Amendment irrelevant,” Deace said. “I think we’d spend an unnecessary amount of time and effort to get that passed — and this is coming from someone, by the way, whom I’m guessing no one gave more free airtime to pass the Iowa Marriage Amendment than I have the last three years. But I’m not going to tilt at windmills here. At this point it doesn’t make a difference.”

So how long until the move for a federal amendment?

Deace’s harshest criticism was reserved for a familiar target: Republican gubernatorial nominee Terry Branstad. Deace supported Branstad’s rival during the GOP primary, Bob Vander Plaats. The two differed on many issues, none more controversial than same-sex marriage. Vander Plaats favored using an executive order to void the Iowa Supreme Court’s 2009 decision legalizing same-sex marriage. Branstad said the idea was not legal and instead favored putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot declaring marriage as between one man and one woman.

[Emphasis mine] This is the kind of talk that I find just plain scary - the idea that a governor can void a state supreme court decision! There are so many people that are so adamantly opposed to same-sex marriage that their prepared to bend and break the law to stop it.
