This year’s recipient is Moises M., a young man that has had many challenges in his life. Because of the profound impact of El Joven Noble, Project SAFE, and Mentors such as Luis Ruan, Jackie Cruz, and Armando Lawrence, Moises has left the gangs and will continue on to college this coming fall.

Please take a moment to read Moises’ self reported experience from this once in a lifetime opportunity:

Week 1 – At first I was home sick, but fortunately my roommates turned out to be awesome. In class, we needed to write a storyline for a short film and a script to match it. I was chosen for the producer role in the short film “Amateur Hour” and got to be Director of Photography in the short film “Set The Tigers Free.” I had a hard time coming up with a shot list, but I felt great when it was all done!

Week 2- As producer, I assigned everyone a job, based on availability. We would work from 9am to 9pm and sometimes event later. I love the food here. We have breakfast from 7:30 am to 8:30 am, but I always miss breakfast. I never miss lunch or dinner. Lights out by 11pm, but I stay up and have interesting conversations with my roommates for at least two hours. I learn new things everyday and most importantly I am getting to know myself. This experience in Idyllwild has taught me a lot!

Week 3 – Post production, my personal favorite! Every cinematographer got to edit the movies they shot. Class started around 9:30 am and ended around 11pm. After the rough cut, we proofed our work and started scoring music. Everything was a bit stressful because the director was very demanding and things kept changing. The last day of post production everyone stayed up all night in order to finish the film, but it was all worth it, when the very next day our film got shown in a theater and we all got to see our finished product. I was very proud of everyone, our films looked great!!!
