Although it was initially intended to enable third-generation packet-switched mobile networks to access IP-based applications and services through Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), marketing hype has driven IMS to an overarching umbrella architecture for offering IP-based services regardless of the user's access technology. Regardless of the hype, IMS represents one of the most important telecom technology developments of this decade, enabling the transmission of any type of media (i.e., voice, video or data) using any type of access method. In this telebriefing Yankee Group will discuss the IMS reference architecture and it's importance to the future development of WiMAX.

Certification of Mobile WiMAX products has started and several big name operators are committing to starting commercial roll-outs during 2008. These include BSNL in India, with an ambitious 3G/4G program; the new spectrum holders in Japan; and Orange, with plans to expand in many African territories using 802.16e. But there have been doubts cast over the risks attached to the flagship US deployments, Sprint Nextel and Clearwire, and meanwhile many other large operators are looking towards an accelerated development roadmap for LTE, which will provide many of the same performance improvements as WiMAX. Behind the grand statements, where will the dollars really be spent on WiMAX systems in 2008-10, and which operators will take the lead? Caroline Gabriel, research director of Rethink Research Associates, will discuss these issues in light of a newly updated survey of the WiMAX plans of about 500 service providers.

The US has been the most significant region in blazing the WiMAX trail, with Sprint Nextel and Clearwire now joining forces to create a national network that could be highly disruptive to existing telecoms operators. This major roll-out is not the only WiMAX activity in the country, with AT&T also owning suitable spectrum and some smaller providers using the technology for broadband and metrozone applications.

In this telebriefing, Caroline Gabriel will examine the likely impact of the WiMAX operators on other wireless activities in the US and the level of investment they will need to make to capture major market share. She will also look at the vendors that will be best positioned to serve the US operators, and at some of the innovative business models that the technology could support.

Finally, there will be new opportunities for WiMAX in the US as new spectrum becomes available, and the technology's backers will have their eyes on the valuable but hotly disputed 700MHz band in particular. The briefing will offer forecasts of how WiMAX operators will fare in that band and the likely impact of the auctions on product development and service roll-out.

There is no area of technology which has had a greater number of systems proposed for how it should work, than mobile TV, with no less than 12 separate methods of organizing radio signals to carry mobile video, each falling into clearly distinct approaches, and that's not counting simple cellular streaming. Your options are to:

build a dedicated terrestrial OFDM network

build a dedicated OFDM hybrid satellite terrestrial network

use existing audio multiplexes to deliver video as well

dedicate bandwidth from voice services to broadcasting video

add a mobile signal in the spectrum which carries digital TV

The right system for a given country depends upon its terrain, existing spectrum allocations, overall wealth, population density, mobile devices penetration and the allegiances' of its operators.

Should WiMAX networks add to this confusion by developing their own technique for mobile TV or should operators look to borrow from what's already there?
